ao3 defenders will talk all day about how “anti-harassment” they are but as soon as someone brings up the idea of removing racist content from the archive, that’s “censorship” and it’s going too far… as if racism itself isn’t a form of harassment………. I guess harassment is only harassment when it happens to people they like

so is it a shocker that ao3 is not the progressive, open, safe website it's seen as? are you not connecting the dots with the website allowing racist fics (including raceplay/race fetish content because that IS racism as fetishization contributes to dehumanization, and dehumanization is a huge part of racism)—meaning they very much support the dehumanization of poc, content and behavior contributing to their harm—and ao3 being run by zionists—people who support the dehumanization of poc, content and behavior contributing to their harm?

i’m not the first person to say this and i won’t be the most eloquent to say it either but for all their posturing about how the “anti-ao3″ crowd are puritans or conservatives or whatever i personally have found “proshippers” to be much closer to right-wing (either conservative or neoliberal) in politics than myself and my peers

The online tumblr kink community has to be some of the most fucking selfish people I've ever met. I have a thing for dominating people in bed, and I like fanfiction of that, but if you told me: "You can only have freedom of being horny on main OR a fanfiction site without CSEM" I would obviously chose the latter because I'm a human being with compassion you fucking imbeciles

I get sick to my stomach every time I see the ao3 donation bar.
Do you know what I could do with $50,000? With $200k+?
I could get my family’s house renovated (roofing, electrical, plumbing, flooring, insulation). I could get our cars fixed. I could pay off all our medical bills. I could pay on our life insurance. I could get health insurance so that we didn’t have to rely on my mother’s shitty work insurance. I could finally afford a headstone for my father’s grave.
My mother could take break from working and I could worry about the utilities and my prescription medicines for a while with what I have left. I wouldn’t feel like a burden on my family now that we have enough to survive on, at least for a while.
$50,000 would literally change my fucking life. Fuck, I get so depressed about this every year because I know that if I tried to make a GFM I wouldn’t even get a fifth of that. Not to mention the harassment I’m risking would only tank my mental health further and would stress my mother out more than she already is.

i find fandom so fascinating. the reasonings behind fans' reactions, especially when it comes to certain characters, is so interesting to dissect. i'm not smart enough to know things about stats or demographics, but it's cool hearing about them.
which leads me to this: the way people completely disregard it when people try to point out the overwhelming amount of racism and sexism prevalent in a majority of fandoms.
no, you shipping two white men is not inherently racist or sexist. no, criticizing fandom responses to m/m ships isn't inherently homophobic. nuances!!! exist!!!!! aaah!!!!!!!!
i think if we as a community actually take a step forward to acknowledge the nuances and problems that we still uphld, there would be so many more talented people willing to take a chance on fandom as a whole. because lemme tell you, even i, an autistic someone who's entire life revolves around fictional characters and stories, absolutely hate fandom and ao3 culture. like genuinely, it makes me sick to my stomach sometimes. (someone criticizing ao3 isn't akin to burning down the library of alexandria btw!!)
alas, fandom is dumb! and if you want to stop being dumb, i highly recommend this series on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1209645
genuinely one of my favorite series of posts. i think who uses ao3 should read these !!!!
k that's all for now. just some thoughts i've had today. idk, i'm tired. happy halloween ^^

why do you actively hate ao3? mostly wondering cause you mentioned it in your recent post
for a "non-profit", they fundraise for money goals far beyond what are actually needed to pay for their site upkeep, all their executive decisions are pay-to-vote, most of their mods are unpaid volunteers, and they actively protect rapeporn and CP under the guise of protecting the freedom of their archive.
a new admin suggests regulating harmful, bigoted, or CP content, they're blasted as (squints at handwriting) a planted agent of the chinese communist party when the site is banned in china
additionally, most defenders of keeping CP content on the site do so with the claim of defending QUEER content.
however, a sizable chunk of the popular creator/reader body and execs consist hetero cis white women, and implying that they, the people in charge, censoring legitimately illegal content, would be the gateway to them having "no choice" but to go on the "slippery slope" of regulating queer content, creates false alarms that the censorship of CP is the censorship of queerness.
...which continues to enforce the idea that pedophilia is queerness. which it is not. pedophilia is not a sexual orientation, it has never been considered a sexual orientation, and it is proven in multiple studies that it is a choice, not a inherent identity the way gender/sexual orientations are.
and for people about to say rape porn and CP is an author's "coping fiction", it's not! writing a narrative about rape/abuse survivors and aftermath is coping- but creating and distributing CP is reopening their own sexual trauma and normalizing readers to engaging in both ends of sexual trauma.
everyone saying their therapist reccommended it is also, bluntly, a Fucking Liar. because if their therapist knew they were writing CP, said therapist would be legally obligated to report them for pedophilia.
AO3 is a culturally significant site on the internet home to many impactful pieces of transformative fiction, and few sites offer the extensive features it does for content curation and moderated interaction. but they're still run by CP defenders and an active shelter to people who want to create and consume pedo content.
i actively plan to cross-post most of my works onto an independent site once they're completed. if ao3's management and policies do not change, i will most likely stop posting content there entirely.
tl;dr ao3 is a useful site but it's not the non-profit it claims to be and actively shelters CP of both fake and real minors without regulation. don't donate to ao3!
this post isn't a debate btw. google is free, and crawling through ao3's own rules and tags is not hard. anyone who starts trying to engage me in "debate" about whether it's okay to write novels about how fuckable real life minors are, and why defending them is key to defending the queer community, is giving me a free blocklist.

sigh. ao3 is the only site i even post fics on but i can't fuck with their donation poppycock, like fuck you you are well over your intended budget and are now actively siphoning money from people who don't know any better or are actively contributing to something that threatens the art world (ai art/fics/voicework)

"ao3 should really be moderated, there is really harmful shit on there ranging from insanely racist/nazi aligned stuff to straight up written cp."
"UHM,, don't you know it's an ARCHIVE?? It's in the name!!"
It is fucking fanfiction. It's not historical documents that help us understand the disenfranchisement of people of color or how society exploited children or how misogyny developed or anything remotely impactful on history. Your racist fanfiction is not important. It does not deserved to be archived.

on today's episode of 'praying on ao3's downfall', racism has to stay on the site to prevent censorship, but if you put 'proship dni' in the tags that's harassment and we're wiping your fic.

It is upsetting that individuals use the excuse of AO3 being an archive to justify preserving intentionally racist fanfiction. The people who are using this excuse sound a lot like the people who think statues of racist people should stay standing for their "historical value".
The argument that all historical figures, good and bad, should be treated equally in terms of statues is flawed. Comparing Confederate figures to slave-owning presidents ignores the specific context and actions of each individual. While it's reasonable to question where we draw the line in terms of statue removal, assuming there is no answer commits the slippery slope fallacy. People can defend statues of figures like Washington while still recognizing the need to remove Confederate monuments. Furthermore, the removal of certain statues does not equate to erasing history.
How does this relate back to fandom? The comparison of racist content to other forms of fiction that deal with "dark themes" and the argument that they all deserve the same level of protection fails to acknowledge the harmful impact of racist harassment on POC within the fandom community. While it's valid to question the boundaries of content removal, assuming there is no solution falls into the slippery slope fallacy. It's possible to uphold anti-censorship values while also acknowledging the importance of eliminating racially discriminatory harassment. Additionally, addressing specific racist fics does not compromise the overall integrity of the archive.

Listen I don't care how much porn might or might not have been in the Library of Alexandria.
The behavior of AO3's fandom this last week was fucking atrocious. Racist, islamophobic and childish.
There is no excuse for that behavior. If the fucking actual Library of Alexandria had been burned in front of you there would not have been excuse for that behavior.
That is the problem. That is the thing that is driving fans of color away. That is the actual harm some of you perpetrated against your so called community.
You want us to take fandom seriously?! Fine! Fandom is as serious as the Library of Alexandria. Tell you what, fandom is, in its own way, as serious as any literary canon in the Western world. And it's just as imperialist and jingoistic and racist and islamophobic as well. What a wonderful conclusion we've come to.

you know, i wish as a fanfiction community, people would start to figure out ways to not depend on ao3 to post their fics and find a community on there. but you know what? that won't happen so easily, knowing the fanfiction community very well. ao3 as a platform actively fuels the fandom and fanfiction cultures' bad habits, racism, and other harmful beliefs that will continue to blind them.
due to the mark ao3 has made on the community, it has now driven people to thrive even more on the "like" systems, which are "kudos" on ao3. and a lot of fanfiction writers are driven determine their worth (as a writer) by the amount of attention they get, and bigger platforms are likely to give them more attention. a lot of fanfiction writers will stay on ao3 even if there were methods to share and/or post your fanfiction, if these methods don't have a "like" system and/or they're not that popular. and even more so if these methods ALSO don't include a comment section.
let's be real. although fanfiction platforms could have rules that go against some of the harmful beliefs that are deep into fanfiction culture (against racial harrassment, racist/race fetish fics, etc.), fanfiction platforms will be way more better if fandom and fanfiction culture (though especially fandom culture as fanfiction culture roots from fandom culture) changes ITSELF. it desperately needs to improve, not only for the sake of not continuing to blind people, but to also make poc people feel SAFE.

i get plenty of feedback on my other criticisms of ao3 and very little feedback when i boost discussions of fandom racism or talk on it myself so i think it seems appropriate to remind people
even if everything else about ao3 was safer and better, the deep entrenching of racism in fandom is still a very valid reason to dislike ao3 and fandoms in general
racism is such a massive issue and i think it’s very telling how often people who are otherwise positive about ao3 refuse to even discuss or address this point
