Goblin Tips: Bite Size Edition vol. 4: Belief
Tumblr media
believe in yourself.
relying on the belief of others is tenuous at best
even the gods of old can be turned into wee, glittery winged fairies by the human psyche
barred entry into homes and even common areas by hidden fences, iron pipes filled with moving water, and free to be mocked and blatantly laughed at
don't let this happen to you

Hello guys! I haw officially published my first short story ever! I haw officially changed my fanfiction into its own thing. And now I'm shamelessly asking for you to help me sheer it out there. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CT3YK9N9 <- amazon link It's a short and sweet gay romance novel written in a fairy-tale esk style. Its bitesize perfect for something to read during your daily commute. Here's the synopsis:
In the Kingdom of Sina, where magic intertwines with mortal ingenuity, Vernon, ‘the Loyal dog of Sina’ and commander of the special forces, faces the daunting challenge of managing the relations between Fae and human. A difficult task on its own, made only more troublesome by the crowned ‘Fox prince’ of the Aos Sidhe, who wishes for nothing more than to hunt the human down and make him his trophy… In more ways than one. Unfortunately for the Sidhe prince, his prey knew of the twisted laws and word games of his kin, providing a challenge the likes of which the elf had not seen since millennia ago, when the ancient hero of Sina scarred his face and froze his heart.
Thank you in advance for any and all help . I am beyond hyped right now.

What do you call fairies?
Tumblr media
"Never speak ill of the deil” is a proverbial maxim, for mortal man never knew when his Satanic majesty might be within earshot. The invisible and alert fairies for the same reason were always mentioned with a honeyed tongue. The wily, knowing not where they might be lurking, were careful to call them “the good neighbours,” “the honest folk,” “the little folk,” ”the gentry,” “the hill folk ,” and ”the forgetful people,” the ”men of peace.‘ Klippe is the Forfarshire name for a fairy." Folk Lore in Lowland Scotland by Evelyn Blantyre Simpson (1908)
Alright, so, all this time I have been calling them “fairies,” and there are other names as well that they are often called.
“The term “fairy’ now covers a large area, the Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian elves, the daoine sidhe of the Highlands, the tuatha de danann of Ireland, the tylwyth teg of Wales, the seelie court and the unseelie court, the wee folk, and good neighbours and many others. The trooping fairies and the solitary fairies are included in it, the fairies of human or more than human size, the three-loot fairies and the tiny fairies; the domestic fairies and those that are wild and alien to man; the subterranean fairies and the water fairies that haunt lochs, streams or the sea.” A Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katharine Briggs (Published in 1976)
Keep in mind that the historical Scottish use of "fairy" was not a term for one creature that looked or acted one specific way, but instead a category for many different creatures (more on that here). For a quick example of this, you can compare how radically different creatures with "Sìth" in the name can be; such as the Cù Sìth or Baobhan Sìth.
Some of the commonly used fairy names you may recognize, while others you may not.
"Sith, sithich, fairy, fairies; ‘siodha,’ ‘siodhach,’ fay, fairy; ‘bean sith,’ ‘sitheag,’ female fairy, ‘sitheach,’ ‘sifir,’ ‘sifire,’ ‘sifreach,’ male fairy. The fairies entered largely into the lives and folklore of the Highland people. They lived in the green knolls and round hillocks, and only occasionally appeared to mortal eyes." Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900]
So, which of those do they like to be called? None, apparently! According to historic Scottish folklore, terms like “fairy” is like a slur, and if you are overheard saying it, the listener may take offence. This is why those a little more superstitious are often heard calling them other things.
"The name of fairy was not pleasing to them, and men spoke of them as “the fair folk,” or “the gueede neebours." Folklore of the North East of Scotland by Walter Gregor (1881)
For example: The Good People, The Fair Folk, The Good Neighbours, The People of Peace, and so on. These terms were seen as a less dangerous way to refer to a fairy.
Keep in mind that most fairies are said to be invisible, so people were always scared about who might be listening.
"The Scottish Fairies, in like manner, sometimes reside in subterranean abodes, in the vicinity of human habitations, or, according to the popular phrase, under the “door-stane,” or threshold; in which situation they sometimes establish an intercourse with men, by borrowing and lending, and other kindly offices. In this capacity they are termed “the good neighbours,” from supplying privately the wants of their friends, and assisting them in all their transactions, while their favours are concealed." Scottish Folk and Fairy and Folk Tales by Sir Walter Scott (1893)
Now you might be wondering, what about fae? Well, "fay" is just an older spelling of fairy, and fae is an alternative spelling.
"The word fairies' is late in origin; the earlier noun is FAYS, which now has an archaic and rather affected sound." A Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katharine Briggs (Published in 1976)
Perhaps because of that, "fay" and it's alternative spellings never appear in my historical Scottish sources that I have noticed. Instead, it is always "fairy" in either English, or Gaelic. That is not to say that the modern use of the word is wrong, because folklore does change over time, just that it does not appear to have been used in that context in the sources I find for Scottish specific historical folklore.

NAME: Aos Sí (pronounced ace-she)
ALSO KNOWN AS: Aos Sidhe, Aos Sith, may have various other names depending on population living there
DESCRIPTION: The fae are famously poor at organization, but they have managed to organize themselves into small communities spread all over the world, referred to as aos sí. About 75% of fae worldwide come from these communities. They are highly variable in size, appearance, setting, and social norms and mores. However, they all have one thing in common: they’re completely and utterly lawless, and lack forms of official leadership. Conflicts tend to be settled with word binding and trickery, perhaps followed by some mutual respect.
Wicked’s Rest has a number of aos sí communities in town and nearby – some are in the town proper, others might be out in the woods, mountain, or ocean, or their own dimension. As a whole, aos sí don’t really interact with each other; it’s not out of malice (they’re just too insular and self-involved). Most fae don’t particularly care which community another fae is from and see family in each other regardless, though there are the snootier types out there.
While the majority of these communities aren’t truly glamoured, they’re hidden in such a way that one won’t see them unless the person in question knows the aos sí is there, or takes a moment to realize what they’re looking at. Most aos sí have a number of different fae species living there, and are open to all fae. Others may only be accessible to select fae, such as the underwater locations or communities high in the mountains. While aos sí lack laws, some still have things they heavily frown upon, and individual fae may take it upon themselves to punish transgressors in whatever way they see fit. For example, it’s not uncommon for aos sí to frown upon not-for-eating humans entering the community, though social allowances are a little more generously made for direct human family members.
PROTECTION: Given the high concentrations of fae in these areas, fae need a way to keep themselves from being seen by humans and even supernatural non-fae. Their primary defense is keeping themselves off the radars of others to begin with. When many fae are in the same space, they generate a kind of veil called féth fíada. Aos sí use féth fíada to shield themselves. This will hide the aos sí from the senses of wardens, and prevent non-fae from seeing or hearing the aos sí unless they’ve already entered it (either intentionally or by chance).
The strength and effectiveness of a féth fíada varies by community. Some make it very hard to perceive them, while others may only require looking out of the corner of your eye to enter; some may behave strangely such as completely masking a community but also releasing a strong stench of rotting cheese. In a sense, this is an extension of their glamouring abilities, and as such, it can be strengthened or dropped based on collective decisions, concentration, and beliefs of the community. Féth fíada dissolve during Samhain and Beltane, which means more non-fae find themselves in dangerous territory – inversely, fae are also on guard to keep their homes safe.
Some aos sí have additional layers of protection, such as having faun or nymphs planted in the area around the community to distract anyone who happens to walk by, or using banshees as alarm systems to predict the worst so they may at least be able to warn other nearby aos sí.
AOS SÍ LANGUAGES AND DIALECTS: While there used to be many prominent ancient fae languages with a variety of roots, they’ve largely fallen out of favor. Most aos sí communities simply speak the prominent language from wherever they are geographically located. Even the secluded ones aren’t so cut off that cultural transmission is impossible. It’s also common for fae to learn and use the language in their country of origin or where the ancestry of their species hails from. Because many fae have Irish and Scottish origins, they tend to be frequently used to some extent, even outside of Europe, but there’s a lot of blending of different influences and cultures.
WICKED’S REST’S AOS SI COMMUNITIES:
Mirrored District: This surreal little pocket dimension is home to a community of varied fae species that prefer to be as far removed from humans as possible. The Mirrored District can be accessed during gibbous and full moon phases by jumping into one’s reflection in large surfaces of water, though some mirrors in town provide alternative means of entrance and exit when the light is at just the right angle. This is known by only a rare few, meaning that it’s easy to fall into the Mirrored District accidentally and get stuck. The Mirrored District has a dream-like beauty but can be disorienting due to everything being upside-down and the sky stretching out below you. Many of the fae outwardly appear to be humans, and the shops sell truly strange supernatural fae goods.  Many residents are aware of Wicked’s Rest and seem to be under the impression they are connected to the rest of the town normally. They refer to visitors as being “from the other side of town,” and tend to greet other fae as “cousin” but don’t explain why. The District is only as big as Wicked’s Rest and terminates at an abrupt perimeter. Those who walk into the strange fog rolling off the edges of town are rarely seen again. Terrible things happen to non-fae who linger in the Mirrored District for too long.
Veilpeak: While not supernaturally hidden, Veilpeak is named as such because it’s high up in Wicked’s Rest’s Seven Peaks, obscured by both its elevation, and the fact that the only way to walk there is to navigate through an intense cave system. The aos sí is located on a large ledge, unable to be seen from below. Only fae with strong and well-formed wings are able to fly up there, and only fae who are adept in darkness can get through the caves, limiting access to those who can reach it. This community is rumored to have developed their own human farm in the caves, though some of the fae may have fondly taken them into their homes as rescues. Many oreads, lampades, and khiones are from here.
Bare Creek: Deep in the forests of Wicked’s Rest, lies an aos sí somewhat hidden behind a cloud of féth fíada mist. If you look into the mist, you can see the Burning Man sign the fae who live here stole. The slight edit to make it Burning huMan is probably a threat to any non-fae who dares to enter. The fae here live what most would call a very natural lifestyle, which includes not bothering with clothes. It is not uncommon for the fae here to dance carelessly in the nude among the gnomes they call friends. Said gnomes have a habit of forming fairy rings, making it especially dangerous to happen upon this community between August and November. At first glance, humans would assume this aos sí is full of hippies singing sweet songs and living among the trees, though that’d probably be the last glance they ever take. Many faun and nymphs such as leshy, flower nymphs, hesperides, and oreades call Bare Creek their home.
Elm Street: Along this seemingly normal town block lies something much more sinister. While some fae like to live remotely, others prefer to cause chaos in the human world. As a result, a group of fae in Wicked’s Rest formed their own aos sí. At first glance, the homes and their residents are perfectly normal in every way. From perfectly manicured lawns and stylishly dressed people, this street looks like something out of a sitcom. It’s only if one looks too deeply they’ll notice the fae who inhabit these homes typically have humans living in their basement or that the pool boys are simply people who happened to thank the wrong person. The fae blend in with the human community, but don’t do any of their own bidding. That’s what humans are for afterall. Many muses, faun, spriggans, and adaptable nymphs call this home.
Hidden Isles: If you go a little further out past World’s End Isles, you may spot Hidden Isles. You probably don’t want to spot it though. The fae here are particularly hostile towards unwelcome visitors. They’ve carved their own little luxurious slice of life on this island and will go to any lengths to protect it. For fae who enjoy some of the finer human luxuries without the human company, Hidden Isles is the perfect home. From beaches free of pesky humans to beautiful houses and the finest meades, the fae here have it all. Many sand nymphs, sylphs, and even a few nereids call this home. There’s also that one spriggan who paints their tattoos on and everyone pretends they don’t know.
Mount Foreverest: Deep in the woods lies a small rock dubbed Mount Foreverest by those who live under it. Whether it’s a play on their shorter lifespans relative to other fae or the actual size of its inhabitants is unknown, but many spriggans call the space under this rock home. If you were to take a peek, you’d find the tiniest tiny homes you’ve ever seen and many smaller stolen items. The spriggans who live here take a lot of pride in their community and are certain to keep it hidden. Well, except from the gnomes who live with them and even act as vehicles for the spriggans to get around their teeny neighborhood. If you give some fae craftsmen in downtown Wicked’s Rest a wink and a nod, they’ll construct tiny items suited just for the spriggans who live here.
Dancing Falls: There’s a good reason you won’t find Dancing Falls on any hiking maps. The combined magic of the nixies who live here make it nearly impossible for anyone but other fae to spot. The nixies claim it’s the best underwater aos sí in Wicked’s Rest. After all, the nereides don’t have a waterfall to dance under and what could possibly be more joyful? A deep dive in the pools under the falls will reveal a beautiful underwater community filled with little caves that the nixies call home. There’s also a good number of skeletons and sunken kayaks for decor. The nixies here are particularly festive which is part of how the falls got their name. The combination of how loud the falls are and a good bit of fae illusions allow the nixies to dance, sing, and swim to their hearts’ contents without drawing any attention. On the off chance they do draw human attention, they have a good time of drowning the humans. While Dancing Falls is primarily home to nixies and other suitable types of nymphs, they often welcome other fae to join in their dancing.
Mystic Triangle: Among humans, Mystic Triangle is known for the alarmingly high number of ships that seem to disappear when sailing across it. The nereides who live there are pleased about that. They want to be left relatively undisturbed (of course, they do happen to enjoy sinking ships every now and then, but who wouldn’t?). Under the water, the nereides have actually used parts of these sunken ships to build their own homes, shops, and entertainment. Considering it’s underwater, the homes are in remarkably good condition, likely due to the fact that the nereides want to claim their stake as having the best underwater aos sí in Wicked’s Rest. Sure, the nixies’ waterfalls and sunken kayaks are neat, but sunken ships, yachts, and a ferry or two are much more impressive. While the nereides have nothing but love for their nixie cousins, they are very prideful. They have nightly gatherings filled with singing and dancing, which sounds a lot like whale songs to anyone above the surface, but this is one spot we don’t recommend going for a whale watch. Some of the bioluminescent nereides lure sailors and swimmers toward the Triangle with their glows at night, eager for a new ship or skeleton to be added to the collection.

"Tsaheylu is an unconditional commitment to an imperfect person. To love someone isn’t just seykxel ti'efu, Y/N. Tsa'u tipe'un, oengeyä syen tipe'un, si tsaheylu mikam metute si Eywa, ma'ite." Ma'sanok said as her hand held mine while we sit by the steps of our home, "the people need you... Omaticaya needs you and you will be Tsahik"
"Will I ever be truly ready, ma'sanok?" I said, tears falling, as mother raked her hands through my hair. I held her hand tighter, praying that Eywa blesses me with more strength as tears streaked down my cheeks.
The sky people have left my beloved Pandora missing. I mourn the loss of my people but I am the daughter of the fallen Olo'eyktan, and I have prepared my whole life for this... for ma'olo Omaticaya. It is in my blood to lead my people through and through but what is this hollow yet heavy feeling in my heart? It feel as if it can never perish from me.
Mama wraps her arms around me. "When your baba asked me for my blessing before he left for war, I made him a promise," she hands me a pouch and I open to reveal Baba's necklace, "This is the necklace I made him the day we first met. He wanted you to wear it… to remind you, slu seykxel, 'ite." Mama wiped my tears as she herself cried. "This is a new beginning for the both of us, ma'syulang. Your baba would not want us to dwell in his death for he is with Eywa now." Mama is correct. Baba did hate it whenever one of us would cry.
He used to say, "'Itetsyip, you come from the blood of strong men and women. You may feel pain in your heart but never succumb to it. Slu seykxel, ma'syulang. Slu seykxel."
The breeze blew silently as an atokirina came near us. I smiled thinking that maybe Baba has sent it. "Oel ngati kameie, Tsahik," Jake Sully greeted as he paid to visit, "oel ngati kameie, Y/N. I'm afraid it's time."
Mama stood and arranged herself, "We must attend to our people, 'ite, 'itan." "Yes, mama. Jake?" I gestured him to follow us.
"How are you, Y/N? I am sorry for the loss of Olo'eyktan. I get that you’re goin’ through a rough time. I’m here if you need anything." His head hung low as he quietly said.
"I know, Jake. Thank you. I do hope Mama is coping better than I am. I cannot imagine the feeling of losing a mate, you know. The pain of losing a father bores a hole through the heart but a mate..." I shook my head, "only Eywa relieves it."
I can't help but think how I would be if I lost my mate. I am betrothed to Jake. As tradition, I have to uphold it but it's not much of a loss. Jake has lead the people through victory. He is Toruk Makto. Many know his stories. He had become Olo'eyktan after Tsu'tey claimed for him to be the new leader of Omaticaya. Baba basically took Jake under his wing in training. "He is a warrior. Omaticaya tsamsiyu!" Baba said. Tsu'tey, on the other hand, needed a little more time to warm up on him but time came and they fought together. They were brothers--Jake was his last shadow.
My shoulders felt heavy as we approached Vitriya Ramonung, the Tree of Souls. Atokirinas surrounded the air as families came and sat with their departed loved ones. Mama was already hovering Baba’s fetal-positioned body as she held an atokirina, tears falling silently.
“Jake… I don’t think I’m ready.” I halted, “I don’t think I will ever be ready to see Baba like this.” I turned to face him, leaning my forehead to his chest. His arms hugged my weak frame, caressing my hair soothingly, “All in Eywa is well, princess. Olo’eyktan was a great man. He will always be with you, I know it.”
We walked towards Mama who has her hands raised as people surrounded the tree. “We have gathered before Eywa to mourn the loss of our people…our Olo’eyktan,” she sat down and began swaying, humming.
youtube
Utralä (a)nawm ayrina’l(u) ayoeng,
Everyone sang with her. Widowed husbands, wives, and partners held their mate’s baubles. Clinging as if singing to Eywa would bring them back— bring their hearts back. Children would sit near their sa’sem, huddling close as they too sang.
A peyä tìtxur fpi na ma ki-ya Eywa?
The wind calmed as men of the clan started placing departed loved ones in their cists. Families following suit placing an atokirina with a kiss in with the body. A mother wailed for the loss of her son. A wife wept and begged for her love to come back. Eywa gives life but life comes back to her too. She gives and she takes. Life happens in Eywa’veng as she upholds the balance every day. No one is free of her plans but no one goes astray of Eywa.
Mama held my hand as the men neared to us. I looked over to Jake as his calloused hands drew calming circles on my back. “Breathe, Y/N. Breathe.” He said as my chest heaved, feeling refreshed of the air filling my still lungs.
Jake stood as Mama did. Jake walked over to Baba’s fetal positioned body and carried him to the foot of tree. In his cist, laid his feathers and his robe. Mama handed me the atokirina where I placed a kiss hoping it would grow into the Tree of Voices.
She dipped down and blew a breath towards Baba as her hands held his songcord. She placed it on his chest, nestling between his hands. Jake covered Baba with the tree bark, sealing him in to be with Eywa. “Baba is with Eywa now, Mama.” I said wiping Mama’s tears.
The drums stopped beat as Mama stood. Her hands swaying in the air as if inviting the fronds of tree to go downwards. She knelt, holding a bowl with a red paste made from nectar and ground burial flowers. She muttered prayers as she smeared the paste on the tree’s bark.
People slowly stood and left the Tree of Voices as Mama held her head low, praying for the lives taken by war. Jake looked at me as he offered his hand for me to hold.
“Go, ma’ite. I might take a while. “ Mama said pausing in chant. “Mama… I can wait for y—“ I tried to reason. “Jake, ma’itan, please.” She asked Jake firmly. Her hands trembled as she held a wooden bowl with kava.
I looked at Jake with eyes pleading, asking him to let me stay but he stood holding my shoulder, "Jake…. please. I want to stay. Let me stay. “
“We have to go, Y/N. We have to let Tsahik do this.” He said helping me to stand quickly. “Mama! Please! I can’t go yet!” My eyes crying as I darted for the bark covering Baba, “Baba can’t go yet. Not now, not ever!”
Mama paid me no attention as she continued to pray. She doused the foot of the tree with the kava on the wooden bowl. “Jake ‘itan. Please take her home."
"I'm sorry but we have to go, Y/N." He said opting to carry me out as I shook my head, wailing, "No, Jake! You put me down right now. My baba is there...he is there..."
I sobbed curled in his arms as he carried me while he walked towards home. He moved the hammock to the side as he laid me down. His fingertips grazing slight as the hammock cocooned me. He laid down on the hammock beside mine. "Jake, have you lost people too?" I asked, sniffing. He looked up at the night sky and said, "Back on Earth, I lost them. My brother died fighting against getting mugged."
"What is... mugged?" I asked sitting up to look at him. "Oh it's when a thief steals from you then they attack you in a public place." "I'm sorry to hear that, Jake." I said. I never knew much about his family. He was never one to talk about them especially his former life. "You never talk about your loss on Earth..." I tailed looking up the stars.
"It's been weeks since I passed through the eye of Eywa. I went in human and woke up Na'vi, Y/N. I even have a songcord like you." He said breathing easy. Maybe he favored this life. He has his body fully functioning and his freedom. "There is not much to like in my former life. So much more to look forward to... even a life with you." He said slowly looking over to me.
I know how timuntxa happens; how mine and Jake's arrangement happens. I was Tsahik-to-be and he is Olo'eyktan. It is not that I did not love him. I climbed to his hammock sitting by his feet tucking my tail on my lap. "It is not that I do not like you, Jakesully," I sighed, "I just wanted to fall in love too. Growing up, I saw love built between Mama and Baba. They had duties but our home was filled with joy and love. I want that with my own family too."
Jake Sully has become my confidant, rock, and partner since I found him almost killed by a palulukan. I ought to kill the uniltìranyu when an atokirina landed on my arrow. He was significant in Eywa's plans and that he did lead the people to victory. He tamed Toruk and became Toruk Makto. Everyone knows his storied. I’ve seen it firsthand.
"I'm sorry if I’ve brought you into this. If you do find yourself wanting others than me, I understand. I can call all this off," He said looking down, fidgeting his fingers, "You are skilled, caring, and... beautiful, Y/N. Anyone would be so lucky to have you as their mate. I would not want to take away your chance of looking for love."
His ears were pink by the time he finished. I chuckled at his unusually shy demeanor. "Jake, you did not bring me into this. I even think I brought you into this but I have fought beside you. My baba... he trusted you--I trust you, there is nothing to not like. I see you.” I said.
“I see you, Y/N.” He smiled.
I have now found Jake’s presence comforting. His strong arms craddled me as I laid beside him. I leaned to his chest, listening to his heart beat. “You know, Jake..” I trailed, “Elders used to say that Eywa started life with people but they had two head, four arms and legs, you know two of the normal body parts.”
“Oh yeah? Tell me the story.” He said as his hand rested on my back soothing circles on.
“It was said that Eywa loved na’vi so much. They took care of her creation. But one day, their queues had gotten tangled because of a disagreement and it cause great pain to them all.” I said wincing at the thought of my queue tangled. Jake chuckled at my expression, “Go on…”
“Eywa felt pity towards her creation who was still in pain so she separated them. Leaving them with half of what their body used to be of. Their queues untangled but separated. Elders say that tsaheylu brings you back to your separated half. You become better, you feel the beauty of Eywa when you find your mate.” I sighed. Oh Eywa, to be in love and be loved in return.
“I used to believe that everyone is made from the same star. My father used to tell stories of his adventures in the stars and how a moon far away from Earth hosted life.” He talked,“I think he was talking about Eyweveng. I dreamt of flying and going through a forest following a tall blue woman that I think is na’vi.” He hinted a tease as I laugh at his assumptions. Maybe Eywa truly brought Jake to my people— our people. Maybe Eywa did bring Jake to me.
“And look where that got you, skxawng.” I poked his side earning a laugh from him. His laugh brightened me. I loved hearing his infectious laughter that never fails to bring a smile to my face. The wind blew and I can feel my fatigue washing over my heavy eyes. I snuggled more onto his chest. Basking in his warm embrace. I wish I could stay here forever if he’ll have me.
“Well it got me here…laying with a beautiful woman hoping she chooses me.” His eyes got dreamy as he looked at me already asleep. He laughed lightly as he wrapped his arms around me. Jake comfied himself and he kissed my forehead, hoping his confession wasn’t heard. Lightly touching the hem of the hammock to cocoon us to sleep.
