Fam I just had the most incredible and stressful 2.5 hours of my goddamn life.

Let me set the scene:

It is 11:30 pm. I’m finishing a shower, remembering that I have a couple of levels left in the Apex Legends season battle pass that I need to finish, as today is the last day before it ends. I quickly realize that I’m at level 106, and I need to be at 110, and even though I have very little left to do to level up, I’m not the greatest at Apex.

So I rush to finish my shower, and dry off as quickly as possible, change, and jump straight into a match. My hair is dripping water, I’m hella uncomfortable, but goddammit I’ve been chipping at this battle pass for months (I didn’t spend money, I just really really liked the level 110 badge aesthetic) and nothing was going to stop me from getting that pass.

That’s when I met my buddy who I’ll be calling D. D and I won a game together, it was fantastic, and the two of us were chatting over the in-game voice call. He asked if we could play together, I told him about my battle pass goal, and the two of us set off to get me my goddamn badge.

Let me set the scene further.

There is an hour and a half left in the season. In order to finish leveling up, I need 4 SMG knocks (which is basically when you damage an enemy enough to “kill them” but their team is still alive and able to get them up) and 5 LMG knocks. These are types of in-game guns.

At one hour left I needed 3 SMG knocks and 4 LMG knocks.

At half an hour left I needed 1 SMG knock and 4 LMG knocks.

At 15 minutes left I needed 3 LMG knocks.

At five minutes left, I needed two.

At 1 minute left, I needed two.

We get into the last game. If I don’t get these knocks, I’ll be stuck at level 109 for this pass for the rest of my Apex career. At this point, I’m practically vibrating out of my skin. We’ve run into so many supportive people at this point- “3rd” players who were helping me get the ammo and guns I needed to win. I was stressed. D was less stressed but still rooting for me. It’s 2 in the goddamn morning, I have a class at 8, but nothing is going to stop me.

I don’t get the knocks. I failed.

I exit the match. The menu loads.

The season hasn’t ended.

D looks it up. The season doesn’t end at 2 am- it ends at 10 am. I just thought it ended at two because Apex doesn’t give you an hourly counter to the seasons end, it just says “0 days left in the season.”

Every muscle in my body fucking melts. In half an hour, I breezed through the dailies and got my badge. It was incredible. It was exhausting. D and I agreed to play more during less stressful times.

Goddammit I could have avoided so much stress if I had just looked up when the season ended.

There’s no real point to this post, honestly. It’s just a fun story because I thought others would enjoy it. I’m so proud of this, which is also kinda silly but I love it. Apex is a huge game in my family and we play together all the time so getting this badge was special to me because it represented incredible moments. And I’m happy I got it.

I’m not kidding when I say that we ran into some very kind people. Many squad mates wished us luck as we bounced from games early, because we couldn’t waste any time being revived. We felt bad abandoning them, but they understood we were on a time limit (even if it wasn’t actually real. Whoops.)

The only guy who was even slightly inconsiderate was a guy who left our game early because we were using our mics. And I respect that. He just left instead of asking us to turn them off. He could have been an asshole about it, but he wasn’t.

Today was a wild ride. Anyways that’s about it. Thanks for the fantastic season (‘•w•)b

(The highlights without context are on my twitter (@pip82937) in case you want to see them without context first coz I think quotes are funnier if you have no clue what’s going on aha)

Episode 1: 

- (‘I should have 20 kills by now’) “Me in Apex [Legends].”

- (’Alright! Places everyone!’) “Stede is such a theatre kid.”

- (When the crew fight the British) “Any of Jay’s (our irl friend) parties.”

- (End of episode 1 when Stede is reading Pinocchio to the crew) “They’ve matched up that lighting really well.”

- (Izzy turns up) “Oh, I know you. [Derogatory]”

- (‘Stede wins!’) “They’ve come so far since the first episode, they’re happy to see him win. Since the first episode when they were, you know, plotting his murder.”

Episode 7: 

- (‘Tatty edges... it’s been around, it’s seen things!’) “Me making maps in primary school.”

- (‘I’d love to be stabbed by Jim.’) “Who wouldn’t? Did you see them in episode 1? I was shook in the best way.” 

- (‘Life is pain’) “Felt that.”

- (Sees the overhead shot of the snake being cooked) “Oh it’s this scene!”

- (I accidentally left my mic on and recited the scene, only realising right at the end) Me: “Did you hear all of that?” Her: “Yep!”

- (‘There are some scraps that didn’t completely burn!’) “Me with my mental health.” (‘No, I think I can fix this!’) “Not me with my mental health.”

- (At the end of the scene where Lucius says ‘That was really sweet’) Me: “Lucius has drip to be honest.”                                                  Her: “Look at those trousers!” [We start laughing]                                    Me: “I know right!”                                                                                Her: “And they look high waisted as well!”

- (‘You should have it [the orange]’) “I mean, it is their tree.”

- (‘La vida es dolor.’) “Agreed.”

- (‘This really is the perfect brandy.’) Me: “You.”                                          Her: “I was about to say me.”

- (Swede sleeping in the barrel) “This is like the barrel scene in The Hobbit.”

- (‘Left them to die at the hands of the Spanish?’) “Dun dun dun!”

- (Beach scene begins, which she’s seen before) “The lighting looks awfully familiar.” 

- (They kiss) “I’m just gonna remind you of how I said they queerbaited baited you.”

- (‘Think up some new names, cool ones’) Me: “‘Cause if he had come up with names, he would have called them both Jeff.”                                    Her: “Oh yeah, definitely. [Laughing]”

- (‘He’s gonna come and wake you up’) “Is that really what’s gonna happen?”

- (Gunshot) Me: “Straight through his other eye.”                           Her: “FUCK YES! [...] Angst AU where Stede dies there and Ed finds his body.”

- (Izzy: ‘What can I do differently? I’m open to suggestions.’) “Everything. Die.”

- (‘Everyone’s got their own style.’) “I love Olu.” 

- (Izzy doesn’t get chucked overboard) “Goddamn it. Is this what blue-balling feels like?”

Episode 10: 

- (‘They have adjusted to the loss of their father far better than expected’) “Let’s not lie; it’s probably ‘cause the most he did with them was play pirates occasionally.”

- (Stede standing in the doorway with his feet out) “Put those grippers away!”

- (‘So, he’s sick but doing well, is the news?’) “Spot on.”

- (Izzy spits his drink on deck) “He’s a proper cunt.”

- (Lucius existing) “He makes the same fucking facial expressions as Harrison.”

- (Mary’s painting comes on screen) “Buttcheeks.”                                 Me: “Do you think they’re basking in moonglow too?”                  Her: “Most likely.”

- (‘I’m in the blanket fort’) “[Laughing] What a mood!”

- (Lucius writing Ed’s lyrics) “[Laughing] He’s so concerned. [Genuine]”

- (‘Someone entirely fictional’) “[Unbelieving] Mmh hmm.”

- (‘What if life just... begins again?’) “Lucius is for real the fucking therapist.”

- (‘You came in late last night.’) “She came in.”

- (Mary’s monologue) “Fair play. [...] Girlboss.”

- (Ed singing) “The entire crew are just looking at him like ‘When’s Stede coming back?’”

- (‘His name is Blackbeard, or Captain’) “Oh piss off. He doesn’t even have the beard anymore.”

- (Replying to me saying how I was going to throw up after Stede said ‘His name is Ed’, clarifying that it was out of happiness, not homophobia) “If you’re homophobic and you get to episode 10 of this series, I don’t know what to tell you.” 

- (‘I’d like a shot’) “Literally.”

- (Mary screams) “A+ acting from Mary there.”

- (‘Is it just me or are they taking an awfully long time to come back?’) “I wonder why that is.”

- (Stede gets hit by a horse) “Yah, they got some good and proper special effects here.”

- (Reaction to Stede’s ‘death’) “Man had a leopard and chose to die by... [Piano falls on corpse] piano, actually. Not horse. The timing of that was great.”

- (Stede rides off) “Season 2 is gonna be full of angst, you realise this?”

- “That was quite enjoyable.”

once again experiencing extreme overwatch nostalgia so loaded up the client one last time for real before overwatch 2 launches. it’s been almost four years since i played with any sort of regularity but legitimately i have NEVER since played a game that actually brought me as much genuine joy on a mechanical level as playing mercy in overwatch did. this game took me through graduating undergrad and the entirety of my masters. i had a huge falling out with one of the friends i played with and faded naturally from another and am still insanely close with a third. i look back at this game with so so much fondness. it’s so hard to try and capture what this game meant to me through a text post and some numbers but i’m gonna write them all down anyway 😂

i played the most during seasons 4-6 when i played about 75 hours a season and then dropped to about 20-30 hours consistently until season 14, which unsurprisingly coincided exactly with the launch of apex. i stuck around a little with small comebacks in seasons 15-16, 19, and 25 but never played more than a handful of hours because it just was never the same without friends. i have a spreadsheet with notes on all my comp games from seasons 3-16&19 but i’m missing a couple from seasons 2&25. i was GOOD* on mercy (*remembering that this is the first fps i ever played and also i suck at games in general), i peaked in diamond in season 6 which is still the highest i’ve been in any game ever, and i was consistently at least a plat player until about season 12 or so when i fell off a bit. there’s a king’s row potg 5 man res that i can STILL bring to mind on demand haha. season 3 was the only season i didn’t play the most mercy (lucio got 33 hours to mercy’s 17) and season 7 was the only season that i played ONLY mercy. i got 7 gold weapons (mercy, dva, s76, zen, widowmaker, moira, brig) and could’ve afforded 5 more. i have currently 116/130 of mercy’s cosmetics, of which i think only 2 were from before i stopped playing? writing all of these out feels so meaningless lol they’re like “fun facts” but there’s just no true way to recreate the feeling of loading into games and running into the best teams and randos in voice chat and getting to fly every day. like yes there were bad teams too and shitty internet strangers and frustrating tilty nights but idk .. when i started playing overwatch in 2016 i was coming out of pretty much the worst period of my life and by 2019 i had been uplifted so much (not by the game. but u know. through association) that i rly do just have such good memories of it. the friendships i had that were cemented through this game meant so much to me, even the ones that didn’t last, and especially the one that did. i even wrote fic for it back in 2018 that i still think is alright, although i never really got into that fandom side of things. it’s weird bc it’s so easy for me to explain that i’m a League of Legends Gamer because i’m literally still playing it in 2022 and i have real, concrete proof like my academic work that i’ve loved it so it’s just an inescapable part of my identity but overwatch was really profoundly huge to me personally as well! but it feels like it just gets buried in one game of many that ppl have cycled through in the years. ah idk .. the inescapable wheel of time, etc ..
