You know what America stands for? If your answer is freedom, then good for you! You’re already on America’s nice list.
America isn’t known to back down from situations where he know that another Nation or person is in need. Many times in the past, he has had to have several secretaries and aides restrain him from marching into the Oval Office and demanding that the president of the time take the reins and actually do something about particular situations he deems unfit to stand. He has a sense of righteousness about him and he will stop at nothing to make things finally right.
So, when he enters one of those national summits and finds that you’re under the rule of some other Nation, he’s irritated on your behalf. However, there have been countless other countries that have been put to heel under another Nation’s feet. What would have made you different? Sure, America has helped many over the course of his tenure as a superpower, but that didn’t mean that he could expend the resources needed to declare war or come up with terms so that your master can let you go.
Perhaps it's your fire that draws him in. Maybe you dream of independence; the cries of anger and hope from your people permeate your subconscious and everyone can clearly see that your hands shake with barely repressed anger.
Or maybe it's your broken down submission. Nations, at their core, are proud creatures. All of them are power hungry and seek glory for themselves and their progeny. However, seeing you look so pathetic as you merely nod and stand by to obey your master breaks something inside of America.
Either way the wind blows, America sees a spark of a particular something that even he cannot name (but maybe it’s destiny) and he begins to start talks and negotiations with your master.
Negotiations can go in any number of ways. America has many sides to him and those aspects that are hidden beneath the surface are either reserved for those closest to him or to his worst enemies. If you happen to be under the control of a close friend or at the very least, an ally, America makes sure to butter them up and open up with talks of business. Your economy is too fragile, your exports not that diversified. Give them to him, America promises to make sure that the little Nation under your control will prosper and become a proud Nation in their own right. America is patient and he’ll bait your master in finally letting you go.
However, if you’re under the control of a Nation that America isn’t all too fond of, he might think about taking you by force. Or perhaps he can goad you into declaring independence. It would be a black mark on America’s already dark and seedy history of helping others in the name of his own ideals, what would be another one? If you declare war on your own, America will gladly back you up and rally up other Nations to join in your just cause. If America is the one to strike the first blow, you and your people may suffer more than what should have been necessary.
In the end, America will take you.
At first, once you realize you’re free, you and your people celebrate. You eagerly take America by the arm to dance, to drink a toast to your newfound independence, or to grant him the seat of honor at your table. For a time, you’re grateful and you’re happy for all of his help. It’s during the pauses in celebration, when you’re wide awake at night that you realize that something… is off.
America has always been the one who hoarded the spotlight. Acting behind the scenes has never been his strong suit. However, while you’re out partying or trying to recoup your losses from your bout with independence, America has been working with your politicians and your leader. He whispers words about trade agreements, about how beneficial it would be to be part of his Nation. Eventually, whatever independence your people may have had starts to fizzle out.
Some of your citizens begin to think about the price of independence and they begin to notice that despite the want for independence does not outweigh the fact that there was a reason why you had a master in the first place. You need another Nation to help, don’t you see? If not your previous master, why not America? America has money, he has the weapons, he has been the one backing you up since the very beginning.
So, why do you hesitate?
It’s said that Nations who’ve had a taste for power will do anything to get it back. Great empires from ages ago like the Italies, Sweden, Britain, China, and even Japan can attest to this. You don’t want to return to your old life where you were made to feel lesser than your peers. Didn’t America say that he would stop at nothing to attain his freedom? Then, so would you.
At first, you followed his instructions. You made sure to stabilize your infrastructure, to make friends in high places. You shouldn’t be high in debt and if you are indebted to another Nation, it better be someone who is willing to wait.
Then, when you realized that you America wasn’t satisfied and that he was actually becoming more demanding in the ways you should be more like an independent Nation, you tried harder. You would do anything in your power to make America proud, but why can’t he see that you’re trying your best for your people? What is he hiding?
Time goes by, more time than what you think should be necessary, but you slowly realize that your government is still working hand in hand with America’s, that your people are still dependent on foreign aid… that’s when you realize…
You’re never getting out.
You confront America about this, but you have your hands tied. Due to his insistent interference and centuries of experience, America now holds your life in the palm of his hands. He’s powerful, he’s rich, and he’s willing to hold your hand. You will never have to experience hardship or war ever again. All you have to do is stay by his side.
And to sacrifice your freedom.
So, will you?
