Otto is the representative for the Order of St. John in Brandenburg or, as it was later called, the Johanniter Order! Established in 1318, they functioned as a hospice order whose primary function was to establish hospitals and other places to care for the poor, sick, and injured. The Order came under the protection of the Electors of Brandenburg following the Thirty Years’ War, which is where he got that burn mark on his face. Gilbert regards him as a younger brother and together these former “miracle children” bond over knowing more than a hundred ways to medically off a man.

At this point in time, the Knights Hospitaller were still very much a thing, though they were now known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and were based in Rome since 1834!

Ezekiel and Gilbert also have a weird thing where they were never really super close because they just weren’t around each other enough to develop that bond but they are also probably the only ones who understand the specific brand of religious trauma revolving around the way they were basically treated like “holy-immortal-child-soldiers-deluded-into-thinking-that-they-were-literal-angels” that they went through. Not that they talk about it they kinda just look at each other and go ‘Yeah that was maybe kind of fucked up’ and never discuss it beyond that

At sunset on the 18th of March, 1314, de Molay was burnt at the stake. Defiant till the end, as he burned he reportedly called out, “God knows who is wrong and has sinned. Soon a calamity will occur to those who have condemned us to death”

I'm giving the name Michael to the Templar Knights and Gabriel to Hospitallers, just because they're biblical names, haha. The Knights Hospitaller started in Cyprus, and Cyprus is an island that was under Greek protection since ancient times, and in times of the Cruzades, Cyprus was under the protection of the Bizantine Empire, thus, Greece, that's why I'm giving him an appearence similar to that of my HC of Greece himself, just like Knights Templar looks just like France.

In my HCs, in his youth, France has a much more severe personality than in his adulthood, more similar to his germanic Frankish roots, than the Galloroman ones. It would be not until the Fall of the Bizantine Empire and the Reinassance that the Greek pushed with the enourmous exodus of Greek erudites that the Fall of Constantinople pushed through Europe, that France, and the rest of the continent, would have contact with the almost forgotten Grecoroman culture. little history footnote: the teutonic order was modelled after the templar order once it switched gears and started to become more militarized. the templars were one of the most formidable crusading orders at the time, but their fall came in the early 1300s when King Philip IV of France decided to take advantage of some rumored criminal charges against members of the order. among the charges were: worshipping idols, allegations of homosexual relations between members, fraud, and financial corruption; no hard evidence was ever found to support these claims.

under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement disbanded the order in 1312. a prior papal bull issued in 1307 ordered all rulers in europe to round up and arrest templars in their lands.
