Do you think South Vietnam would’ve been a separate character? And if so, what did they look like, and what do you think was her relationship with Vietnam (North)?
My answer is no, first and foremost because of this post from @cupofkey that explains Vietnam’s history and what made up “Vietnam” throughout the ages. The explanation is well thought out and I like the interpretation/argument that (hetalia) Vietnam was always the only personification of irl Vietnam. I guess my “personal statement” about this is that the modern concept of Vietnam, in terms of ethnicities and perhaps govt seems more cohesive and probably couldn’t allow for 2 personifications representing the same country? Again referring to the linked post, perhaps there’s a personification of the Cham people who originated from the southern part of (the modern concept of) Vietnam but they would’ve represented the Cham people first and foremost. For a while, Cham = Southern Vietnam, but idk if there would be a Specific Delegate for S. Vietnam itself, as a state (? I guess).

The cat is a zodiac!
China: Happy Year of the Rabbit, Vietnam!
Vietnam: Cat.
China: Aiyah...you are still hung up on that story huh...
(Vietnam: The cat deserves better...)

Notes: This is more of a penning down of what I hope to eventually produce as a short comic strip. A lot of my HCs of Vietnam as well as her relationship with China are inspired from this fic .

Vietnam’s favorite saying is Tre già măng mọc:
as the bamboo grows old, young shoots spring up. As the old generations die, there will always be the young who replace them, who will carry on, who will finish what they left behind. It promises renewal, and she thinks it is fitting; with all the times she has had to rebuild, regenerate, reinvent herself into something new,
(she counts the invasions, conquests, wars, all the times she has had to get up again,)
It fits her. It fits her well.

👻 for vietnam please?
Oof the first ask of the batch—sorry for keeping you anon! And if you’d like a better explanation or more detail I’d rec @cupofkey!!! She’s very nice and gives God Tier Headcanons about hws Vietnam and SEA and all the helltalia nations in general. Highly recommended.
TW: I mention/talk about the Vietnam War briefly; nothing even remotely graphic but just a heads up.
Emoji asks!
👻: do they believe in the supernatural? Are they scared?
I think she does—she isn’t scared though, not normally. (Edit: the prompt said “supernatural” but I read “ghosts”, so mostly this is about ghosts...)
Seeing as nations are reps of the people, I think Vietnam believes in the Vietnamese folk religion that about 45% (according to wikipedia) of people practice. However, even if she doesn’t, ghosts are almost like an accepted fact in Vietnam (with a lot of ghost stories on the regular and people seeing monks and exorcists for advice on how to remove them), so just because it’s such an ingrained ig part of her culture, I think she does believe in ghosts.
So, ghosts in Vietnam: one becomes a ghost when one dies in an unpeaceful/violent way, isn’t surrounded by family at death, is neglected, doesn’t get a proper burial/funeral/rituals performed after death to help one pass on, or isn’t included in ancestor worship after death. Ancestor spirits who died good deaths can be called back to give advice, or just be helpful and benevolent guides to future generations. Ghosts with bad deaths often cause bad luck and trouble, and there is a feast in the seventh lunar month to feed lost souls and try to appease them and stop them from bugging/eating things humans find valuable as well as trying to help them and relieve their suffering a little; Buddhist monks will pray and ask Buddha to forgive the sins of ghosts and allow them to peacefully pass on. The festival is also for honoring deceased family and ancestors.
Another part of this is the amount of ghosts of people who died in the Vietnam War. There are a lot of unmarked graves and a push to find missing soldiers and bring them back to their hometowns so they can receive proper burials. There are also ghosts of civilians killed in the war, as well as foreign soldiers; there are 2 Americans and 1 Asian soldier, suspected to be a South Korean, in Ha My, the site of the Ha My Massacre.
So yeah. With the amount of ghost stories, belief in ghosts, and the remnants of war still very present, I’m pretty sure Vietnam would believe in ghosts, even if it’s only because she herself as an almost supernatural being exists, so why can’t ghosts? She tries to help any ghosts she finds; again, she’s not really /scared/ of ghosts. I think she’d feel more sad and sympathetic than anything; they were once her citizens, and sort of still are, and she feels she has an... obligation? To try and help them to achieve rest? So. I think she’d put out offerings a lot, esp on the ghost ceremony—trying to help them a little bit and ease their suffering for a while. Also just praying and lighting incense and stuff, intended specifically for ghosts who don’t really have family left and have died alone; soldiers and just civilians who’ve been killed brutally, and forgotten. She sometimes thinks that maybe she’s failed them somehow; there always seem to be so many—so many people she’s lost in cruel ways. She also asks /ancestors/ aka spirits of her past leaders how to settle things,,, how should she bring these people rest. Just. trying to help lost and/or trapped spirits in any way she can.
As for other supernatural beings, I’m not... entirely aware of many.... I think that again, she believes in the Vietnamese folk religion, so there’s the whole package of /ancestor/ (aka past citizen) worship, spirits/deities, ghosts, all that stuff. Not sure if that counts as supernatural but yeah. Most of the spirits from what I’ve read seem to be nature-related or ancestor/deified figures from folk legend; I think she definitely encountered at least the figures from folk legend in her lifetime somewhere. Perhaps they came to give her advice or just hung around,,, idk. But whether or not they actually had interaction with her, she definitely believes in them. And as I said before, I think she’s not scared; I’m not sure what angry spirits would be able to do, but seeing as she’s a nation, and their nation, I think the most any spirits would do is talk to her, but they wouldn’t try to hurt her.
also, key, please add on; I did a heck ton of research but this... doesn’t feel like something you can get to know just by doing research...

Appearance drabble for Vietnam because the Hetalia fandom really be out here not giving her much content smh 😔 (seriously though she’s SO underrated and I don’t get it)
Written in the illegal 2nd person. Enjoy; feedback and criticism are welcome and appreciated!
~~~
Lien reminds you of bamboo.
Perhaps it is because of the soft green of her clothes, or the way her body seems to only consist of straight lines, the rare curves sloping gently, subtly;
(even her hair is straight, despite whether it is tied up in her usual low ponytail or hangs loosely down, waist length and inky black;)
or perhaps it is the way she looks graceful and slender, how all her actions are smooth and fluid, and all her movements devoid of the superfluous.
(Almost like the way the bamboo stalks bend gently in the wind, a swathe of gently bending lines, clean and minimal.)
Or perhaps it is something else: something inexplicable and almost uncanny that renders her so alike to the willowy bamboo forest.
Like the way the others have mistook her appearance to mean plain, harmless, never fathoming the depths underneath.
(She is reminded of the weapons she made against them; the stout, blunt ends of the bamboo rod turned sharp, keen and cutting: able to wound, able to kill.)
Like the way she has regrown, time after time, sprouting up from the  soil that they had ravaged and burned, sprouting fresh and green and  ready to begin again.
Like how she has stood strong and firm, weathering invasion after invasion;
(First it was Yao, who stayed for almost a thousand years, and then a long peace, (the calm before the storm), before the rest came rushing at her like typhoons to her shores.)
coming out with gashes in her sleeves and scratches on her paddle, but always whole, always standing tall.
Or maybe it is simply the way she seems so at peace among them, so at ease. As though the bamboo grove is her birthplace, her family and home, the place she will return when she dies. They seem to be part of her being, holding her up when she is beaten and tired, like a second skeleton that supports her, protects her, gives her the strength to continue.
The bamboo is her body, her soul, and her home.
~~~
Additional (head)canons for Vietnam and China because I have Thoughts:
Vietnam was the one born from the bamboo grove; China was born from the river. Vietnam’s core strength is perseverance; China’s core strength is flexibility. Like the bamboo, Vietnam grows and regrows, and at its core, the bamboo is a woody grass; Vietnam’s bones are strong, and she has resisted domination time and time again through her persistence and her patience. Like the river, China is fluid and adaptable, and the river twists and turns, forging new paths through the mud; China is flexible and plays the long game, transforming himself into something that will survive and endure.

APH Vietnam Appearance HCs
Was supposed to be for Vietnam’s birthday on Sept. 2, but I didn’t finish it on time... Anyways I’m trying to write for Viet more, because she’s super underrated and could be explored waaaaaayyyyy more hhhhh. (TW mention of burn scars)
TL;DR: Lien’s image evokes her land; her form is organic and natural; it speaks of fertile soil, teeming bamboo forests, flooded rice paddies that stretch on and on. And like the vastness of the earth, there is something bigger about the plainness of her dress and figure, something that underlines her age, her wisdom; it reminds you that her unassuming appearance is only one layer of her, and that her strength, perseverance, and 4000 years of knowledge, are all hidden underneath.
Her eyes are plain, but there is something special about them. They are the color of rich, black soil baked warm by the sun, but can turn cold and sharp, (deadly), at a moment’s notice.
She has a flat nose, the tip wide and flared. It is not a “cute” button nose, but it compliments her face, and she would not change it for the world.
Thin lips, wide mouth. Her rare, occasional smiles are always sweet.
Tan skin, warm undertone. She is not pale.
Her figure is made up of almost all straight lines; there is barely any accentuation of her hips or chest.
The curves of her body are subtle, like gentle sloping hills, but they add to her appearance in some vague, indistinguishable way that is hard to pinpoint but easy to spot. Regardless, she has a quiet beauty about her; it is not immediate, but people notice: they notice how she holds herself, how she moves, the quiet, firm way she talks. There are a thousand little things that make her beautiful.
Her overall figure is solid. It is refined enough to look vaguely feminine, but not particularly delicate, and clearly accustomed to manual work and harder labor.
She would not change anything about how she looks to fit the current trends.
Her hair is shiny and very smooth. It is either tied back in a low ponytail or hanging loose, waist length and very straight, like an inky black waterfall.
Her hands are often calloused. She traces over the lines in her palm a lot, especially when she’s bored.
She doesn’t have much fat anywhere; her muscles are noticeable, but not prominent.
She does not have an hourglass figure; her waist and torso are mostly straight, and not much narrower than her hips.
There are burn scars all over her torso and on her legs; they have not faded yet and are still a dull red.
Her feet are larger than is proportional for her height, and a little calloused. She likes to think of them as her roots; they ground her, they are her connection to her land and the earth.
Her legs are muscular and powerful, and very good for running.
Despite being old, she is extremely flexible, easily bending to touching her toes and arranging her limbs in all manner of poses that the average young person cannot strike.
She is average height, with slightly longer legs than upper body. It makes her look very graceful. She likes to think of herself as a stalk of bamboo; the analogy is fitting for other reasons besides her appearance alone.
She has come to terms with how she looks; in her eyes, her body is just a map of her experiences, a record of her past. She looks upon her scars and bruises and burns without hatred or loathing; they simply tell a story of what she has been through. (She remembers everything that happened, but she does not loathe her past self, does not try to think “what would have happened if...”; she has accepted it, and has decided to move forward instead of dwelling in memories.)

💞 for Vietnam
Thanks for the ask anon!! I really appreciate you and some other people repeatedly asking for Vietnam because she totally needs more love. Again I will be recommending @cupofkey for stellar Vietnam content and good takes on generally everything.
Emoji asks!
💞 - Do they believe in soulmates?
Honestly, I’m not very sure; this is going to be a disappointing answer, but I really think it could go either way. From reading, Vietnamese culture tends to set a lot of store in ig fate and higher forces in daily life. However marriage has traditionally been a union for the family, and not for the individual of love ig—finding a good match is one that’s compatible (based on astrology, fortunetelling, zodiac etc) instead of one who has romantic chemistry or whatever; money, status, and stuff like that are also taken into account. This has of course been changing and I believe (?) nowadays dating/marriage is much less strict and more focused on romantic dating instead of arrangements between families.
So, although Vietnamese culture has the family instead of the individual dictate more of the marriage arrangements, I think Vietnam believes in fate to some degree and likes the idea that there is someone waiting for you out there—it’s indeed comforting, thinking there is someone who is destined for you, and who will know you in a way nobody else is able to. I also think she Really Wants her citizens to have a good life and ease their pain/troubling times, and I feel like the idea of soulmates (at least for humans) would appeal to her because someone who is like, destined to love you and be there when you need them is nice; it makes hard days easier to bear when you know you WILL have a constant companion to be by your side. Idk if she thinks nations have soulmates—I feel like she’d think that their unique nature as countries and representatives of politicians and people who often clash makes them unable to have proper soulmates. They might love someone, but they’re not destined for anyone in particular.
However, with all that about her belief in soulmates being said, I also think there’s a nice case for her not believing in them. Vietnam strikes me as a rebel: fighting the good fight, choosing her own destiny instead of letting others choose for her. I mean, the resistance against multiple empires/outside influences says something about the strength of her character and her will; at the end of the day she is committed to choosing her own path and is not really someone to be pushed around. Additionally, if borrowing key’s really cool hc that she’s les (lesbian), I think she’s even more inclined to go against the norm and write her own story, live her own life. Therefore she may not believe in fate as much and instead opts to go her own way, find her own love, that sort of thing.
Edit: also adding on to the whole outside influences and rebellion thing, another good post about the Vietnamese view of the Vietnam War that really shows like Vietnam’s agency and something that fits into her choosing her own path.
(side note I feel like Thailand x Vietnam would fall under an interesting soulmate au dynamic or just a dynamic where Vietnam believes in soulmates; jury is out on Taiviet but I think that ship would be cool with either soulmate belief or “fuck the concept of soulmate, we make our own destinies”)
tl;dr: I really have no idea. Either way you spin it seems perfectly fine and plausible; just depends on where you want to take her character.
Feel free to comment, debate me, whatever!! I love other people’s opinions!
Edit 2: I feel like this whole thing talked about fate more than soulmates, but uhhh yeah hope you liked it lol...

I do not exist to impress you. | APH Vietnam
back on my aesthetic bs. yay.
A lot of aesthetics for Vietnam seem to have a green theme, so I decided “heck let’s not be boring”, and went with black and white. I hope I did her justice; she’s so underrated despite all the ways her character could be explored and deserves better hhh
Edited after posting to fix some stuff
Edited again because I wasn’t satisfied

☮ - friendship headcanon for vietnam
Ohoho thank you!! She is best girl.
Symbol asks!
Already canon but: I think in nationverse, Vietnam would be really tight friends with Thailand. Sure, they’ve fought directly (2 Siamese-Vietnamese Wars that were quite devastating) and indirectly against each other (Thailand was on the US side in the Vietnam war) in the past, but they’ve mostly moved on from that. Sometimes there’s a little tension but mostly they really like each other’s company. Vietnam sometimes finds Thailand a little too cheerful, especially when she herself feels like slapping a dumbass across the face, but they get along well. I love the strip where Thailand tries teaching Viet to smile; it’s so sweet. Just adorable. 10/10.
Uhhhh they’d be the sort of friends that just go to each other’s houses and talk about whatever, maybe have some good old roasting sessions; they’re just vibing and relaxing and having slow days spent in each other’s company. Also I can see Thailand buying Vietnam goofy socks for gifts.
Vietnam is familiar/close with Russia and his siblings, Ukraine and Belarus; they met during the USSR era but are still pretty good friends rn, although I think her relationship with Russia is a little more distant than with his sisters; she thinks he’s ok but they aren’t super close.
Also giant shout out to Belarus and Vietnam, because I love to think of them as the acidic wit duo. They critique anything and everything, and their idea of fun is drinking Vietnam’s coffee while roasting the Insufferable Alfred F. Jones™, because “someone has to put his ego in its place, and it doesn’t seem like any of you want to”. I love them.
I know people love to ship Vietnam and Taiwan, and they’re probably ok friends at least, but I’ve read exactly one (1) post (that I can’t find anymore!!) by @bubbleteahime that analyzed the nuances of their relationship and how it might not be as ~sweet~ ig as people think? I believe the gist was that irl, there’s a little bit of condescension toward Vietnam by Taiwan on the basis of a few things, mainly that they’re considered manual labor and have a rather biased reputation of committing crimes; so I think they’re relatively close, but not like 100% buddy-buddy. Still have some stuff to work out.
Edit: here’s the post; highly recommend you read it.
If you were looking for what kind of friend Vietnam would be, or how she’d act towards friends... I think she’d be sorta quiet, but gets chattier the more you get to know her. She’s definitely a good listener and won’t hesitate to tell you when you’re wrong (but she will help you in deciding the best course of action in tough decisions). She’s very independent though, and knows what she’s worth ig (what I mean is that she makes time for herself as well and sometimes won’t be around for stuff). A solid friend though; good advice giver, and if you need to hatch a plan/scheme for whatever reason, she’s the person to go to (although she has strong morals, so if you’re planning to murder someone, you’re out of luck).

Most of the time, Lien is quiet. At the meetings, most of them don’t really notice her, and when they do, they see a quiet girl in the corner, unassuming, a little reserved, modest in every sense of the word. They might even say she’s nice; they’d be wrong, of course, but she doesn’t bother to correct them—she stopped caring what people think about her long ago. All she can hope is that her perception of the world is not as misguided.
On second thought, they aren’t entirely wrong. Their observations about her outward facade are accurate, but it doesn’t take a genius to see that. She doesn’t pretend to exude brilliance and confidence; it is probably best if she keeps it stored for when it is needed most. She doesn’t care about being the center of attention; she has had enough of that in twenty years of war to last her a whole lifetime. She doesn’t have a reason to be rude to every stranger that she meets, but she has enough to know to keep her secrets to herself. So they aren’t really wrong—it’s just that they only see the things that are plainly there, the things that she does not bother to hide. It’s just that they tend to overlook all the things beneath her surface.
She supposes she’s okay with that. Because in the end, it’s like she said before—she has stopped caring about what people think about her long ago. And she likes it like this. Her secrets, skills, strengths: they are all her own. The world will see them when they emerge, when she feels she wants to show them, when they will see her quiet strength, her patience, her bitter wit and her cleverness, the fire of better that still burns in her soul. They will see when it is time. And for now, this is enough.
~~~
A super vague character drabble for Vietnam! It doesn’t quite capture how I see her, but it’s good enough; mostly it’s an excuse to make content for a beautiful gal. I might do a rewrite later and add a couple things I had in mind. Very much inspired by this beautiful post. Feedback is appreciated!!
APH College AU: Vietnam!
AU Intro | Tag is #college au musings!
Also, a disclaimer that I don’t know how law school works (besides that it’s really cut-throat and scary and very hard). Apologies if any of this is inaccurate, please correct me!
— Vietnam’s in Law School with an undergraduate degree in sociology
— She has a lot of interest in psychology but decided not to pursue it as a profession. However, she still reads studies, academic papers, and the latest psychology news to keep track of new discoveries and theories.
— On the debate team in undergrad with Alfred; they often debated against each other during practice (their views differ a lot and most times they’re polar opposites), but at competition, when they’re arguing the same case, they’re a force to be reckoned with.
— Speaking of Alfred, they’re frenemies; whether they’re friends or sorta enemies varies based on what dumb thing Alfred’s just done. Mostly they’re at least ok with each other though, although Alfred’s done stuff that she can’t really forget or forgive him for.
— Needless to say, she’s really smart.
— She’s also really clever (and subtle) when she needs to be, but prefers to be blunt and honest with most people. The exceptions are Yao, Alfred, Kiku, and possibly Francis.
— If you get into a debate with her, she’ll cut you to pieces every time.
— She avoids talking about her love life at all times and hasn’t been in a romantic relationship yet; most people just assume she’s ace or lesbian (she’s actually asexual biromantic so they’re half right)
— She does ok under pressure, so she holds up fine during cold calls: doesn’t get flustered, brain doesn’t go blank, able to make stuff up on the spot if needed, etc. (//for those who don’t know, cold calls are getting randomly called on to analyze assigned reading)
— Becomes super unavailable during midterms and final exams; she refuses all invitations to parties and social gatherings with a short, slightly impatient “No, thanks.”
— Takes digital notes, will send you stuff that you missed if you’re a friend. Her spelling is impeccable and her notes are good quality stuff: really detailed, organized in logical sections, main points bolded, etc.
— She has a reputation as a Big Brain so she gets a lot of requests to tutor people or send them her homework and stuff. Most of the time she says no; she knows some people who ask are just lackies and not putting in effort; she can see some of them are genuinely struggling but she doesn’t have time or energy to help them (also she doesn’t really feel like tutoring strangers...). She feels guilty about it sometimes but her friends talk her out of it.
— Most of her professors know her as someone who pays attention, does well, and has a lot of interesting takes on the material (she likes playing devil’s advocate). They like her; she doesn’t cause trouble, and although she’s not very funny, she often stays after class to continue talking about a different perspective of the topic they were discussing in class. They like her engagement with the material
— Likes most of her teachers, but if she thinks they’re boring or give too much redundant, monotonous homework, she won’t hesitate to moan about them.
— Best subject is history, and she doesn’t have a worst subject because she’s kinda a God Tier at everything (she didn’t like science though, but took a few semesters in her first year at undergrad just because)
— Straight As (90-100). In law school that changed to the B to A range (83-96) but she’s accepted it with resignation
— Does literally everything on her laptop, but her handwriting is very messy. She doesn’t care; she doesn’t feel like putting in the effort to make it neat and Pretty™ like Taiwan’s
— She’s friends with Romano and Belarus (they’re both on the law school path) and they like to go to coffee shops on a weekly basis to study and complain about the professors they don’t like.
— Taiwan takes her clothes shopping a lot; she thinks it’s a waste of time but her wardrobe increases by a few sweaters and jeans every time they go.
— She and Belarus met at one of America’s parties, and they have a friendship based on black coffee and acidic wit. A lot of people think they’re a couple, and they don’t really do anything to subvert that rumor either. They think it’s funny :)
— She and Thailand are childhood friends and they’re still super close. They share an apartment (they’re not dating though) but sometimes go to China’s place to hang out with his siblings
— Regularly writes opinion articles and submits them to the college newspaper under the pseudonym “Coffee and Taxes”; they’re often calls to action or her scathing opinion on the most recent Dumb Political Decision, but she mostly writes about college stuff and things she’s noticed taking root around campus
— Always cooks her own food in her and Thailand’s apartment (neither of them feel like buying from restaurants or eating the rather bad school food); they argue over who has to go buy groceries every week (but like, in a friendly way)
— Dresses super modestly; she rarely shows her arms or anything above her knees, and practically lives in sweaters, leggings or jeans, and wool socks.
— To that end, it helps that she has a really high heat tolerance; often times she’ll still be wearing a long sleeved t-shirt while everybody else is sweating profusely
— Unintentional dark academia aesthetic. She doesn’t go out of her way to buy stuff that fits the aesthetic, but it just happens to fit her style (idk if that makes sense but yeah)
— She sings (or hums, or whistles) quietly in the shower sometimes, usually sings traditional folk tunes and short, plaintive songs that have deep meanings about life. They’re usually in Vietnamese or don’t have any lyrics
— She doesn’t talk much around people, but when she chooses to open her mouth, you better be listening because whatever she says makes an Impact.
— Adding to the above, she’s mostly quiet, even around her friends. She’s just more content to listen rather than say things.
— When she gets angry, she either bottles it up, becomes super bitter, and chooses to avoid you for a week until you ask, or she just tells you bluntly right away, however she’ll still hold a grudge for a pretty long time.
— Small friend group but everyone knows her name somehow
— Good at reading the atmosphere; very often, she can detects subtle messages and double meanings. Good for gossip, but she doesn’t do that kind of thing.
Next is Taiwan (probably)! Thanks for reading!
This is just me sharing a shitty idea so you don’t have to reply to me, but I have a mental conflict of being able to see Vietnam as a lesbian in cannon but I also ship her with certain male nations. So I ended up thinking of a crack thing where South Korea and Thailand are both about to confess their feelings to Vietnam and either before or after they get rejected, Philippines is like “You realize that she’s a lesbian right” And they’re like “What” And Phili is like “Guys she’s been dating Tai”
Tumblr media
Lol I often have that same conflict too anon. I personally headcanon her as bi for now because there are a lot of good hws asean ships with her and I enjoy Thaiviet a lot (philviet is another good one)
I feel like Thailand and SK are both pretty perceptive and could pick up on that kinda stuff, but yeah it's funny to think about shdfjs (I think Viet can be really lowkey if she wants, so it's possible that they don't know if she's dating. Although I also think Piri is a very big gossip, and if he knows who Viet's dating, the rest of ASEAN probably do too lmao)
Idk if this counts as a ship ask, but what are your thoughts on South Korea X Vietnam?
Thanks for the ask anon!
Ship asks!
Gotta be honest, I’m not sure what my thoughts are about them? I haven’t seen much content for them and I don’t have a sense of their vibe ig, so I can’t really say anything for certain. The historical parallels and irl relations are certainly intriguing though and I feel like there’s a lot of material for shipping as a) vassal states/tributary states of China, b) the Korean War and Vietnam War both in terms of parallels and SK’s involvement in the Vietnam War, and c) the modern day relations, which are quite good. I can’t really expand on anything of their possible history, but I feel like Vietnam would’ve met Korea somewhere while they were both under China; from reading Wikipedia a survivor of the Ly family massacre fled to Korea and then helped stall the Mongol invasion of Korea, so I feel like perhaps South Korea would have felt grateful (?) towards Vietnam, and sort of in awe of her. He’s not sure whether her resistance of China was a good idea, although she seems to think so, but he can certainly admire her bravery for doing so, especially as he was unable to keep him out in the end. The whole thing with the Mongols would probably only strengthen his image of her as someone fierce, intelligent, with strength that’s often overlooked, and maybe make him feel like he’s in debt to her a little? Not sure, but as I headcanon Yong Soo as a young kid/preteen (subject to more research and evaluation) during the Mongol invasions, he doesn’t have any other feeling for Vietnam besides a hint of awe and vague curiosity.
I think there’s probably a long gap of minimal contact after that (again subject to more research) and that they meet again during the Vietnam War when South Korea sent a lot of people to help the US. I’m not sure how either of them feel; I think Yong Soo would have felt at least a little guilty, even if he’s in denial. After all, he’s just been separated from his brother, whether he willingly chose to or not, and now he’s helping Alfred try to meddle in someone else’s affairs when he’s still unpacking his own feelings about aligning with capitalism for the cost of a sibling. From Linh/Vietnam’s POV, she’s probably thinking about Yong Soo’s hypocrisy too, but she can see how he doesn’t have many other choices besides coming here and sacrificing his men in a war that should have no relation to him. She’s also thinking about how much he’s grown from that kid she met long ago who looked curiously at her as he stood next to Yao, eyes wide with a hint of trepidation (no doubt because Yao had told him lies about her, or half-truths, they were pretty much the same anyways), overpowering inquisitiveness, and maybe a shadow of admiration. He’s grown, as all of them do, into someone who has killed and bled, and she can’t help but feel a little bit sorry for him that he kills and bleeds for someone else; he should not be here, because there should be nothing in it for him. But he’s here.
Ok small drabble over, skip to modern day relations are pretty cordial between them. I think Linh and Yong Soo have k-drama watching sessions, and often Taiwan joins in. They’re probably good business buddies (South Korea is one of Vietnam’s top trading partners) and have moved on from some/most* of their antagonistic encounters. *However, there’s inevitably some sore spots, and I don’t think South Korea holds it against Vietnam that she might still have a grudge, because it’s always this way with nations. After all, he still has a grudge against Japan even as they have regular meetups with America and watch K-pop MVs together.
So, after I’ve finished giving them some thought, I think there’s a lot of interesting possibilities in shipping, but I think I see them as more of a brotp or (mayhaps) wlw/mlm solidarity friends. For me, they’re more platonic than romantic, but again it would be interesting to see them interacting from a romantic lens as well! All around the amount they’re featured together in something is a little bit criminal considering the history :\ the woes of being 2 minor Asian characters in a fandom where everyone is going crazy for Europe :|
HELLO sorry i had an extremely busy past week so i left this to stew for weeks T_T (my term break was Not a term break in any sense of the word. f)
OH OF COURSE SHE HAS A BLACKLIST.... vietnam keeping a list of students who are Brats is really so valid.. i'm willing to bet that in future when that dubious list of students grows up many of them will go on to commit morally dubious acts lmaoo including yao himself. and if they get arrested or if rumors spread she'll just be like "lol called it"
Also yes go get her friendship Aditya hopefully it will mellow you out a little as well - YEAHH their personalities are like. polar opposites tbh because he's Dramatic And Extroverted and she's very much Not... but for some reason i can just see them really bonding (over things like coffee if i had to make a guess though i haven't really thought about these two in depth.. )
“Admissions officers think Yao’s amazing and contributes greatly to the classroom environment and Vietnam is like “yeah, in a way, as long as you don’t mind someone who thinks every word you say is somehow wrong and will fight you to prove it lol. just take him, I’m trying to get rid of him”
JUST TAKE HIM I'M TRYING TO GET RID OF HIM THIS IS SO FUNNY WTF also aww baby yao's Going Places!! he comes back for like teacher's day or something and vietnam is like "okay so how many of your teachers and your classmates have you antagonised" and yao's like "my teachers love me and my classmates fear me. or they're begging me to help with their homework. or they're potential friends/accomplices >:)" and vietnam is like ugh love to see that you're terrible as usual
Since there’s essays involved I’m assuming she teaches either history or literature? Kinda on the fence because I feel like she’d be good at giving a no-nonsense version of history filled with interesting details and prompts that make you think (and also hosts monthly debates on controversial issues), but I also want Yao to be as un-confident as possible in his abilities in her class, and I feel like he would be less comfortable/sure of his answers and thoughts in a lit class than a history one. I’m not sure though
honestly i would really want her to teach lit so bad but history would be so cool too.. as someone who suffered through lit for the first month of school (though i think i'm getting the hang of it now :D) i also want yao to suffer through the feelings of inadequacy when the teacher gives an evaluation that is COMPLETELY different from yours while also awkwardly trying to tell you your evaluation is wrong without crushing your ~passion for learning~ or something... but at the same time vietnam has such strong history vibes??? and they would probably clash over like different methods of historiography and methods for interpreting sources BUT historiography isn't really taught in-depth here at high scholl level ... And at the same time lit is the best place for one to feel Insecure so i really don't know because vietnam has such History/art vibes.. i think you should decide this i have no idea 😔
Context
“she'll just be like "lol called it"” that’s such a mood honestly, watching your former bratty students grow up to be bratty adults 😅 At least Vietnam’s predictions for the future are vindicated and she gets self satisfaction from it lol. (maybe she sends emails to them sometimes like ‘are you aware that people think you committed tax fraud’ and the reply is just a simple ‘yes. sincerely, Yao’ lmao)
ooh yeah I think they’d be interesting; definitely agree with what you said about India being really flamboyant and Vietnam being more honest/down to earth and definitely someone who hates when people put on airs (which Aditya does to a fairly large extent...). I think she’d like him just a tad more because he isn’t super condescending and gets along with his classmates pretty well; she knows he’s trying to impress her (lollolll they’re all trying to get teacher points for recommendations) but at least he’s friendly and participates in class and stuff. Also I think India’s good at small talk, makes an effort in getting to know people, and is very emotionally in tune with other’s feelings (even if he’s a bit stupid/oblivious sometimes) so even if Vietnam is kinda closed off to him at first (she’s nicer to him than Yao though, that’s for sure) he can get along with her quickly by picking up on what she likes talking about and accommodating her interests. Yao could theoretically be charming like Aditya but he just doesn’t make an effort lol. YES to bonding over coffee, especially raging about how Starbucks is Inferior™™™™ (idk if Aditya would drink coffee but I think Vietnam brews her own Vietnamese iced coffee at home and bring it to class because she needs Fortification for putting up with Indchuran lol.) However, I also want to see her popping his bubble and whenever he’s exaggerating one of his accomplishments, Vietnam just shuts him right down. “No, he actually didn’t go all out; I’ve had students turn in whole ass dioramas for that project so your meager offerings are nothing special :}” (Vietnam has the pleasure of crushing each of their egos in turn hehehe)
Yao came back to visit her!!! Looks like someone caught feelings (platonically ofc) :) She sees right through his excuses for coming back and is like “haha bastard you got sentimental and Attached to me >:)”, but then Yao proceeds to remind her exactly why that’s a bad thing lmao (also... what if... we smashed this au and bros for life together.... and Vietnam is the first person to see that they’re hopelessly pining on one of their visits to see her..........and she calls them out on it....o-o)
“"my teachers love me and my classmates fear me. or they're begging me to help with their homework. or they're potential friends/accomplices >:)"” LOVE TO SEE YOU’RE TERRIBLE AS USUAL ALDSjSDLSD Yao dashed my hopes of him becoming somewhat of a model member of society but seeing him as an unchanging bastard is still quite alright. Headcanon that Yao really hates helping with homework though, because he’s like “WHY DON’T YOU GET THIS” after about 5 seconds of trying to explain something. Pity, he would be good at teaching if only he had the patience for it :} Also I propose that he really hates that teaching isn’t enjoyable for him because it would be great blackmail material (i.e. “if you do this to me I’ll stop giving you the answers to the problem sets *winks in a threatening manner*”)
SAME literature is the one class that makes you thoroughly question your comprehension and understanding of everything in life everything ever written, but HISTORY. she would be such a fun history teacher and I can see her having her students really dig into events for themselves and make their own evaluations of why things happened and who’s “right”. YES THEM CLASHING OVER HISTORIOGRAPHY hmm... maybe we could get around historiography not being covered much by having Yao be Extra™? For example, maybe one day Vietnam offhandedly mentions there’s a lot of interpretations around x period (and whether it was a success or failure) depending on which type of historiography you subscribe to; Yao, who was already feeling strongly on the subject, does some research (“what is historiography” “interpretations of x” *rabbit hole of articles ensues*) and then goes to class the next day armed with 10 sources and a full on debate about the subject ensues, resulting in him being late to lunch by half an hour.
What about a compromise, where Yao has a ferocious literature teacher (who??? idk) but Vietnam is teaching history, and when he gets comfortable in her class he starts complaining about the lit teacher and she thinks oh finally, a teacher that he’s intimidated by. I am at peace now. 😌.
