If you plan to climb to the top of Mount Zas in the summer, start early in the morning to avoid the heat. #tip _________________________________ #greece #travel #summer #greek #naxos #visitgreece #greekislands #photography #nature #apiranthos #vacation #island #europe #cyclades #holiday #grecia #naxosisland (at Naxos Island, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClPAyc8KsJF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Friday 30th June
Bus Transfer Naxos Island. Today we took a bus tour around the northern part of the island. We left at 0915. First stop was the ancient temple of Demetra, one of the most significant ancient monuments of Naxos.
Next stop was the small village of Damalas where we looked at a restored olive press (not in use) and Manolis traditional pottery. Driving further into the heart of the hinterland we stopped at Chalki (Halki) and the Venetian mansion that housed the Citron distillery of Vallindras. Here we were treated to a taste of the "gin" like Citron. We purchased a small bottle of the medium strength liquor. Next stop was ar the foot of Mt Fanari, Apiranthos. Here we had some free time to wander. The village had beautiful marbled alleys and beautiful houses and shops. We drove on through the famous emery mines (not much to see) to Apollonas, a picturesque fishing village. Here we had a seafood lunch and some people went for a swim on the lovely sandy beach. Not much further on we were able to visit the Kouros statue. Arrived back in Naxos around 1800.
It was a very worthwhile and enjoyable trip...good guide.

Naxos is the biggest and the greenest island in the Cyclades. It has high mountains, fertile valleys, lush green gorges, stunning seascapes and traditional villages perched high on mountain tops, where the inhabitants still wear their traditional dress and live off the fruits of the land.
Naxos is also home to beautiful old churches, monasteries and Venetian castles coexisting harmoniously with the Cycladic architecture.
Upon entering the port of the whitewashed Chora of Naxos you'll encounter the islet of Palatia at its entrance. On Palatia islet the impressive marble gate, temple of Apollo, “Portara” stands still since the 6th century BC. According to mythology, the god Dionysus met Ariadni there, who had been abandoned by Thesseus.
Chora, the capital of Naxos, whose landmark is an imposing Venetian castle, is an old castle town with stone-paved alleys (known as kalderimia in Greek) where you can admire a unique blend of Cycladic and Medieval architecture: mansions with Venetian blazons still decorating their entrances, narrow arched alleys (known as stegadia in Greek), catholic churches and fortifications.
Visit the Archaeological Museum, housed in a historic building of the Venetian Period, that showcases artefacts from the Early Neolithic Age up to the Early Christian (Paleochristian) Period and an interesting collection of Cycladic figurines.
Discover the varied landscape of the island by following numerous breathtaking routes. Follow the hiking trail from Apiranthos (or Aperathos), along the emery mines (12 km), where you'll have a breathtaking view to the Archipelago up to Moutsouna Beach.
Climb to the top of Zas Mountain, Cyclades’ highest mountain (1,004 m) and Fanari Mountain (908 m) or follow beautiful biking routes around the mountains.
On your way to Zas’ top, don’t forget to visit the beautiful cave of Zas and observe its impressive stalactite formations. Note that the cave used to be dedicated to Zeus in ancient times.

Zevgoli tower is a two-storey Venetian tower of the 17th century located close to Apiranthos village in Naxos.
The tower is privately owned and inhabited during the summer months, however visitors can access the tower and the verandas when the owners are present.

1st to departure on the 5th July
1st..
Winds are still up so decided to hire a car and see some of the local sights on the island. Finishing with a bit of a beach crawl. Some cute little towns we past through, with their winding alley ways..quaint coffee and lunch places. Stopped at Halki for lunch and wander through the town. Lots of hand woven Cotten items along with Naxos marble.
Drove through Apiranthos ( traditional marble city), island is dry looking with patches of white buildings here and their in valleys.
After lunch headed to the coast....watched colourful wind and kite surfers..great conditions for them.
Checked out a few more beaches all so clean and blue....by the way we have only seen one cloud on this whole trip.. the sky is perfect behind the white buildings.
2nd to 4th
The wind has just about gone. Thank god not completely as would be bloody hot. We spent a good 3 hours playing in the surf and wandering the beach.
Lunch has been at one of the many places along the beach...watching the world go by and people playing.
