me watching appare-ranman: man this show would be so much better if it just embraced a darker tone, the goofy saturday morning cartoon atmosphere is fine and all but the story would really benefit from idk killing a main character or something
me finishing ep 10: IT WAS A JOKE I WAS JOKING STOP

ive looked through your 2023 watched stuff but ive been wondering if youve said anywhere what your favourite animes of all time are ? just curious cus i want more reccs
ooh good question! i am so indecisive and so full of love for so many series that it's always been a bit of a struggle to pick out just a few absolute faves, but here are the first few that come to mind
(i'll try to keep to shorter series here)
and standard disclaimer that everything here is my opinion and my opinion only
best anime of all time: shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu, and for me nothing even comes close
the story is told over the course of two seasons (the second being shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu: sukeroku futabi-hen; 25 episodes total) and it is imo just an absolute masterpiece. it's a somber tale, but executed in such a masterful way. the show is centered around rakugo and rakugo performers, and felt to me like not only an incredible story but an incredible performance of the art of storytelling
i don't rewatch this one very often because it makes me so sad, but i think it's a beautiful and worthwhile sort of sadness to experience
best sports anime of all time: kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteiru (23 episodes), and once again nothing even comes close. which means a lot coming from me because i love sports anime i will watch any sports anime i love good ones i love bad ones i love them unconditionally i'm like sports anime georg so 'best sports anime' is maybe even a more significant crown than 'best anime' coming from me lmao
ahem anyway in terms of objective quality there's just nothing that beats kazetsuyo, and i highly recommend it even as a character-centric piece for people who aren't generally into sports anime. it's just that good
side note 1: while i would call kazetsuyo the 'best' sports anime, my personal favorite is eternally kurobas (though it is on the longer side)
side note 2: honorary mention to megalo box, another of my all-time favorites. it's sports + sci-fi so i typically don't count it solely as a sports anime, but i love it to bits. there is a second season that i haven't even seen yet! i've always heard the second season is even better than the first, so i've been saving it for a special day (also i'm a bit scared of it because i was so happy with the ending of the first season that i'm kinda like resistant to change lol)
best anime i can't tell you anything about: so generally i'm of the belief that spoilers don't ruin much for me, if something is done well then it's done well even if i know it's coming. that said, there are a handful of series where i am so glad i went in knowing nothing, so that every twist and turn caught me completely unawares
and the top two i would recommend in this category are samurai flamenco (22 episodes) and sarazanmai (11 episodes)
definitely do look up trigger warnings if you've a need for them! but otherwise, going in knowing nothing really heightened the experience of these for me
they are... strange, and amazing
this is getting long so i'll just dump a bunch of favorites in a list below (some are Great, some are decidedly Not Great but Very Fun and beloved to me lol, and all are 25 episodes or less)
feel free to ask for details if you'd like to hear more about any of these, or if you'd like recs in any specific genres!
acca: 13-ku kansatsu-ka, appare-ranman!, baccano!, barakamon, cool doji danshi, dorohedoro, fantasy bishoujo juniku oji-san to, gankutsuou, gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun, houseki no kuni, ikebukuro west gate park, kimi to boku, kuragehime, paripi koumei, sabikui bisco, tiger & bunny (and its distant cousin double decker! doug & kirill), uchouten kazoku, wotaku ni koi wa muzukashii, yojuhan shinwa taikei, yuru camp
side note 3: just realized tiger & bunny is actually no longer under 25 episodes because we got a second season after like ten years lmao BUT i couldn't bring myself to remove it because it is phenomenal

THIS GAY DRAMA HITS STRAIGHT INTO MY FRAGILE KOKORO! <3 I am here for this shit. This is so dramatic! So gay! Ah, and nobody died! WOHOO! Also the gag at the end was amazing and suited their pairing so well! They are two lovable dorks and I cannot stress how happy I am for them! Be happy! <3
They are so cute! Kosame basically abandoned his family and promised fiancé to be together with Appare, and is petty enough to use his wound to squeeze the truth about Appare’s feelings straight out from him, because he won’t say it xD

I’m really loving Appare-Ranman - SPOILERS!
So, with Appare-Ranman, not only do we have nearly an entire cast of adults, but we also have a diverse cast. The characters can definitely come off feeling a bit stereotypical, I will admit that, but it fits the wacky set up, premise, and tone of the series.
Plus, the series is starting to add real layers to the characters, so they feel more like people, and less like tropes or the usual stereotypical depictions. This hasn’t happened for every character yet, but I’m hoping it will.
The series also doesn’t shy away from touching on sexism:
Tumblr media
Racism, both overt and physical:
Tumblr media
And more subtle and on a micro-aggression level (the more “stereotype, comes from a place of ignorance, rather than malice” level) :
Tumblr media
But when push came to shove they all stood by Hototo. Showing signs of a “found family” element to the story! T0T
Tumblr media
I also feel that the MC, Appare, is neurodivergent. He is shown having a tough time understanding non-logic based things, will deny himself sleep or food when he is tinkering and working on things (especially his car), he seems a bit touch adverse, and so on.
That being said, he isn’t shown as being this cold hearted logical person either. He helps the other characters in his own way, knows when something isn’t inherently okay/is morally wrong, and is depicted as being pretty adorable sometimes, and the others are learning how understand him too:
Tumblr media
The series is still ongoing. They could end up messing things up, but I like a lot of what I see with Appare-Ranman. It’s an anime series that you don’t see too often. It may not get everything right in the end, but unless the series starts royally messing things up, then I think it will be a ride that I won’t regret taking. And I like the effort that is being put into it. The music alone is amazing!
Please give it a watch!

Summer anime 2020
And it’s been three more months in 2020, not a lot of seasonal anime and it’s the start of the fall season! Here’s the review, or something! Wow, there’s really not a lot of stuff airing
{ Winter ‘18 }  { Spring ‘18 }  { Summer ‘18 }  { Fall ‘18 }  { Winter ‘19 } { Spring ‘19 }  { Summer ‘19 }  { Fall ‘19 }  { Winter ‘20 }  { Spring ‘20 }
We also watched new seasons of No Guns Life, Muhyo and Roji, SNAFU, Fire Force, Re:Zero (the anime that singlehandedly saved the entire season) and continuations of Ahiru no Sora, Fruits Basket and Great Pretender.
Appare Ranman!
Tumblr media
The show is about race cars and racing but until you actually get to that part, half the seasons comes around. The anime looked like it would be one of the best runners this season but it just stayed at the “it’s okay” point. Character development is present, the animation is smooth and really nice and the characters are memorable but not to that point that they make you care about them.
Deca-dence
Tumblr media
Up until one point it looked like it would be an awesome anime xD If you watch it, you will understand what I mean (otherwise it would be just a huge spoiler). The mentioned plot twist is unnecessary and kinda makes you back away from the show but nevertheless it is good. The story is engaging and there is always something happening, character development is present once again and the visuals are really nice. It is not something you would immediately recommend to a friend but it is definitely not a waste of time if you decide to watch it.
Mr Love: Queen's Choice
Tumblr media
This anime is based on an otome game about pretty rich boys and supernatural powers. Having played the game, I really have to say that the anime did a pretty good job! And it made me realize how cringey some scenes were haha I’ve seen some complaint about animation or so, but of course it can’t be as detail as the art in game, so I was pretty satisfied with that part too. The plot was condensed and better laid out, I actually got the feeling of it being a bit more interesting while animated. It can’t beat the game in a sense of it being more detailed or having more time with The Boys, but overall, it was well executed, some characters were introduced earlier and the pace hastened. Oh, and I found MC much more tolerable in the anime, maybe because there were less of her dumb monologues or unreliable storytelling haha (edit: the ending confused me)
The God of High School
Tumblr media
I read some of the webtoon and it’s pretty much the same except some minor things, I guess? The animation is more then exceptional and it’s kind of the reason why it’s still good anime. I can’t say the plot makes much sense or it’s like...good?...I’m not saying it’s bad, I just feel it could have been brought out better (or with more sense, it just feels like too many thing pushed in a small space). The plot is still interesting! I still highly recommend this anime to anyone who like watching fight anime because those scenes are really outstanding, you just want to keep rewatching them because they just FLOW. The characters are also likeable!
The Millionaire Detective – Balance: UNLIMITED
Tumblr media
Since I’m a sucker for detective shows, this one was a real gem. Everything from the animation, music, voices, humor and characters is really good. Basically a rich guy trying to solve everything with money decides to be a detective, his colleague who hates his money-can-do-everything attitude and add some murder mystery in the mix. Loved it!
The Misfit of Demon King Academy
Tumblr media
This is a really typical fantasy anime. You won’t see anything awe inspiring in this anime if that is what you are looking for. It is really cheesy, but still fun to watch. It’s not the best anime, but in this genre, it’s pretty great. It’s cliché and with over the top characters and plot, but somehow it just works! In the end, I’m happy that this anime was here this season because it made me laugh and feel refreshed!

On: Appare-Ranman
This is my first official post, so hello and welcome! My name is Pidge, pronouns in the bio.
This blog is entirely for me to just rant and rave about the anime I’m watching, probably long after they’ve finished because keeping up with seasonal anime would take much more out of me than I am willing to give.
I don’t know how to work Tumblr well so don’t mind me too much if things look shitty! I’ll figure stuff out eventually.  Also, everything will be going under the break for people who’d like to avoid spoilers! Appare-Ranman came out in April of this year, but I know there are people like me who like to wait until a series is fully out before you go back and binge it. There will also be a TLDR at the start if you’d just like to read that!
TRIGGER WARNING FOR MENTIONS OF RACIST IMAGERY
TLDR; The anime is okay. My favorite part was the relationship between Kosame and Appare, but I really wish they had done more with the interpersonal relationships between the other characters. The fight scenes are lackluster, there are large plot holes that aren’t ever explained, and most importantly one of the more important side characters is a black man with a noose around his neck. I’d give the anime a 2.5 - 3/5.
STORY
Lets start this off with a basic summary of the narrative. Appare-Ranman centers around the duo Appare and Kosame. Appare is a genius inventor with big dreams and a lot of ambition, but less than great social skills. Kosame, on the other hand, is a cowardly swordsman who’s tasked with the job of looking after Appare. Due to a series of events, the pair end up in the middle of the ocean, stranded on a steam ship Appare built, and have to be rescued by a freight ship. The pair end up stranded in America, and enter a cross-continental race to earn the money to head back home.
When I first saw the plot synopsis of this show I was super excited! I really like the idea of having such a contrast between old-school Japan and 1700′s America. On that aspect I wasn’t disappointed. What DID disappoint me were some of the more gaping plot holes in the story. The first of which being how in the HELL are two Japanese men fresh off the boat communicating with Americans?
A freight ship captain might be able to speak Japanese since his business is overseas, although him having a translator would be more realistic. But what about the other citizens? Why can Appare walk right up to the owner of a car shop and ask him for a job? Eventually I let it go while I was watching, but it irritated me that it was never explained.  The plot itself doesn’t have too many big twists and turns. And when it did, I can’t say I cared about them all that much?
Jing’s race helped to reinforce the themes of doing the impossible and not letting others define what you’re capable of, but it felt very hamfisted in it’s message about femininsm and “girls can do the same things boys can”. I got tired of them repeating that so much, and I really wish Jing had been the one to punch that smug bastard at the end of the race instead of her boss. He doesn’t get the right to defend her after not even giving her a chance until she nearly crashed.
Kosame killing the person who killed Hototo’s family felt,,,very rushed. And something that should have been used as an experience to develop Hototo’s character, who I believe stayed pretty static along with the rest of the cast, was instead used to develop KOSAME, who apparently lost his mother as well.  Speaking on that - I laughed at the scene that showed Kosame’s mother getting killed. I giggled at that shit and you wanna know why? Because the way it was set up was ridiculous.
The murderer hops out of the bushes, he slashes his sword across the mother’s back, and then just... runs away down the street.
We do not learn why he does this, we just see it happen. It’s meant to be a dramatic reveal about Kosame’s past and yet it’s almost comedic in it’s suddenness. But I also laugh at a cockroach singing scat so what the hell do I know?
The latter half of the story doesn’t really contain any huge flaws, and most of it’s weaknesses come from the fact that the cast itself is fairly weak and I just couldn’t get invested in the stakes. When Sofia got kidnapped I just didn’t care all that much. The only two things I knew about her character was
a. she could drink a lot
b. she took up her mother’s role as Al’s caretaker
That was virtually it. If she lived or died I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. Which is really bad when this is meant to be the climax of your show, this is when I should be the most invested.
CHARACTERS
Most of the characters are fairly one note, with none of them having anything that makes them particularly stand out beyond their odd choice in fashion.
Speaking of odd choices in fashion, lets talk about Crazy TJ
The singular black character in the show, and you put a noose on him? Your singular black character, and you decide that you want to make him violent with questionable morals? Your singular black character, and you make him as unempathetic as you possibly can?  I love anime god BOY HOWDY do I hate how racist anime can be.
Crazy TJ isn’t the only one-note character, though. Most of the supporting cast don’t have much going for them. What can I say about Jing? That she’s a feminist who likes to race? And what about Al? The only three words I can think of to describe his personality are “rich white boy”.
I’m unsure of how I feel about Gil, though. On the one hand I think he pairs well with the idea of “the only limits you have are the ones you set for yourself”, with Gil being the immovable object to Appare’s unstoppable ambition. But at the same time he just felt very...over the top. And there was never any time given to explain just how he rose to power or why he may be the way he is, or even why he’s doing what he is. He’s just an indiscriminate killer, and those sorts of characters can be fun, but it’d be nice to know a bit of his history so we can know more about why he is the way he is.
All in all, there wasn’t much that stood out to me character-wise. They were all fairly bland, although there were a few interactions outside of the main three that I found to be really cute, like the relationship between Tristan and Hototo. But for the most part none of these characters would be all that interesting for me to watch go on an adventure outside of the happenings of the anime.
The exception to this being Appare and Kosame. Mostly Appare.
Out of all the cast I really do think these two have the most character development, with Appare learning how to care for and rely on other people more and Kosame learning how to take risks and opening his mind up to new possibilities. I really love their dynamic, and seeing them interact was probably the best part of the show for me. Kosame and Appare are like an uncle and his weird nephew who have a really wholesome relationship. If these two didn’t play the lead roles then I don’t think I would have even finished this show.
And I especially love Appare. He is my son. My little baby boy. I love him with all my heart
CLOSING REMARKS
All in all Appare-Ranman is an okay anime. The concept is interesting, and I did enjoy watching the characters race cross-country, but a majority of the cast is fairly bland, the plot and writing fall short in areas I feel are important, and there’s literally a black man with a noose around his neck. It has quite a few problems, but I like the overall message of not letting other people define your limits for you, and I really enjoyed watching Appare open up to Kosame and the other people taking part in the race.
If there was another season, I’d like it to possibly be done with a different writer. And for Crazy TJ’s design to lose the noose. That shit is gross and I don’t understand what the character designer was doing when they put it on there.
This rating is pretty arbitrary and not based on any scoring system, but I’d give Appare-Ranman a 2.5 - 3/5!
This isn’t the best review by a long shot but it’s just my personal experience while watching the anime over a three-day period. At the end of the day, these are all my opinions! If you disagree feel free to tell me, or maybe point out something you think I overlooked, just please keep it respectful~

Appare Ranman spoilers but
Jesus fucking christ that was such a complete tonal shift and it was executed perfectly
I can’t even be mad
I probably should have expected this when they satisfactorily concluded Kosame’s character arc??? And seen this coming as a true conclusion to his resolve???
Part of me wants to scream about how this is the perfect way to write the death of a beloved protagonist but another part of me wants to just scream KOSAME WHYYYYYY

While I have mixed feelings about how the situation with Kosame was handled (both like it and dislike it, lol). The Al x Appare relationship picked up speed this week!! Not only did we get Al being worried about Appare and trying to use Appare’s love for tinkering and fixing cars to help Appare snap out of his dark thoughts, but we also got Appare saying he’ll fix Al’s car (in response later in the episode) :
Tumblr media
Then saying this:
Tumblr media
And then we got this hug!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HIS EYES WIDENED AND HE MADE A LITTLE SURPRISE NOISE WHILE BLUSHING!
Tumblr media
Appare gets a little flustered and embarrassed and awkward, but not in a totally tsundere type way.
Tumblr media
Please don’t just be queerbaiting! T-T This ship has so much potential!
This post has essentially just been me fangirling. Also, now that we know there was a past love triangle with Dylan, Claudia, and TJ...I’m just like, look at this:
Tumblr media
It has had huge OT3 potenial! Okay, that’s all. I have way too many ships for an anime series that doesn’t even have 13 episodes yet. These characters are all just so shippable and have really great interactions! <3
