Today is Black Femme Character Dependency's 3rd Year!!!

A History: Funny enough, it began for friends. I was one of the oldest people in the Henry Danger fandom and had a lot of Black friends there who, when the show ended felt like the Black female character hadn't really gotten what they wanted out of the finale, but I was more concerned about if we'd still gather and stuff if we didn't have any common fandom to unite through.

After a few conversations about Black female characters in general (and us not having too many fandoms all in common), I decided that I'd make this space as a gift to my friends where they would be able to have Black female and feminine characters collected in one safe space to reblog or discuss without having to worry much about fandom racism or "colorblindness."

So frequently, some of the things I reblog are not of fandoms I'm a part of because its stuff that friends asked for, and I do the drudging through tags to find rebloggable content for them.

Then so many other people began to follow, which is pretty dope, though at the end of the day, it's still a place where me and my homies can have things that pertain to these types of characters that are often widely overlooked or underappreciated within their fandom spaces.

I copy and pasted my response from messages between myself and a follower. I thought today could be the perfect day to answer this question for anybody who wishes to know.

THE AMBER ROOM

In April 1717, the Amber Room, "Eighth Wonder of the World," was packed up in crates and shipped by horse and cart from Berlin to St. Petersburg, Russia, as a gift to Tzar Peter I from Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm. Twelve years in the making, though incomplete, the room consisted of over 100,000 pieces of carved amber—golden prehistoric tree resin—placed in panels. It was a puzzle to Russian craftsmen when it arrived and stayed in the crates for fifteen years. Eventually Tzarina Elisabeth requested that it be completed and mounted. Another fifteen years later, the room was open to the public for the first time in 1746.

Ten years after that, Catherine the Great had the treasure moved to the imperial summer residence in Tsarskoye Selo, where it stayed until the outbreak of World War II. In 1941, when German troops advanced into the area, the room was given a quick camouflage of paper and gauze; however, Nazi soldiers discovered the panels, packed them into twenty-seven crates, and moved them to Königsberg. A few years later, they were recrated to protect them from bombing, but when the Soviet army regained the city in 1945, the Amber Room had vanished.

Covering fifty-five square meters of wall, the amber panels were interspersed with eight mirrored pilasters and mosaics of semiprecious gems depicting the five senses. An exquisitely painted ceiling, rare wood mosaic floor, and bottom panels of carved amber lined with gold foil completed the room. Rumors suggest that the panels were hidden in a silver mine or buried by the shores of a murky lagoon, which have since been swallowed by water. In 1997, the son of a Nazi officer who was involved with the crating was arrested trying to sell a piece of mosaic, but no one knew where the piece came from.

Storm Hawks 'Bird' OC Challenge - April (Fools!) 2023

Hello everyone! Another month, another challenge! Just like last year, in the spirit of April Fools' Day we're going for something that flies but isn't a bird. The wonderful people on the Discord server helped me pick this one, and eventually we settled on the Amber Phantom Butterfly (Haetera piera)!

This butterfly is located in South America, and ranges across Brazil, Veneszuela and other similar countries. Its wings are almost entirely see-through, which made putting together a colour palette for it quite difficult, especially since the specimen photo is a bit lacking in the colour department.

Therefore this month I'm going to be posting numerous colour palettes over the course of the first week of this challenge! From both this specific species and similar, related 'phantom' butterflies. Because of how these butterflies' clear wings refract light, it's lead to all kinds of possibilities with colours, so I'm going to do my best to give you all multiple options this month!

Deadline this month is Wednesday the 26th of April, 12pm. I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

As always, rules and extra photos are under the cut:

Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner’s vote are a name, occupation, the character’s home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.

Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I’ll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.

Entrants who are part of the Storm Hawks discord server will have the chance of getting a custom role for the next month! If you’re not part of the discord server, please ask for an invite if you’re interested.

You’re not expected to create a character from scratch for this challenge. If you’ve got an older character concept that’s been collecting dust or that you’d like to take the opportunity to revamp, feel free! The goal of this challenge is to inspire people.

Collaborations are allowed! Same rules apply, the only addition is that you and your partner(s) just need to make note of who was responsible for what part of the character

Make sure to tag me in your entries and also DM me with a link to your entry. Tumblr is not always reliable about notifications for this sort of thing, and I don’t want to risk missing anyone’s entries, so better safe than sorry.

The group collage of entries, and the winner’s vote are opt-in. Participation of those parts of this challenge are not mandatory.

2023 Amber Marshall Calendar: APRIL

I brought my first rabbit home when I was.

...and have loved having them around ever since. Raspberry is fairly new to the farm, but this Flemish Giant has made up for that by her size! She is already much larger than her roommate Mimsy - an 8-year-old Flemish mix.
