Marinette: What’s the rope for?!

*Without saying a word, Marc pulls the rope, and water rains down on the Akuma Class. Not only do they get wet, but their clothes turn all white with the words ‘Marc’s Prank Bitches’ written all over them*

Alya: You swapped out our clothes?!

Marc: Cost me €600, but it was worth it!

Austin A: *Crying as Marc just stares at him* What do you want with meeee?!

Marc: Aren’t you gonna eat your sandwich?

Austin A: You did something to it!

It's like a survivor event??? All I got from that was the groups are either food- or dystopia-themed which is SO !!!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw "Akuma no Odorikata" and for some reason could not tell which characters were on the thumbnail LMAO so I was like "Oh cool!! 'Devil's Manner' 2DMV!!" and then "Wait did An get a haircut? OMG WAIT HARUKA!!" ANYWAY they went way too hard for an April Fools' 2dmv /pos IT WAS ROYALLY GORGEOUS the Rui + Akito + Haruka voice combo SLAPS

ALSO TOTALLY CALLED IT!! THEY DID THE PINK UNIT!! Kinda... Still the "Alien Alien" mv WAS SO ADORABLE I frickin loved it I'm consuming all of them!! Bethany's Bizarre Miraculous Reviews Episode 3-12: Chris Master

Yeah that's right, I'm doing the second Christmas episode on April Fools' Day! At 3am! Although in-universe it isn't a Christmas episode which reminds me how hard it is for me to figure out the Miraculous timeline since so many months occur in season 1 to the point where the other four seasons are in a timeframe of approx. 4.5 months! That's 1.25 months per season!

You ever think about how weird it is that Marinette has plush dolls of her possessed classmates, including her actual bestie?

Holy fuck! Mario Kart 64 Bowser!

Just show this kid some Ed Edd n Eddy, or something, Marinette. He's clearly young but not young enough for that show, right?

Marinette Costanza strikes again! With some self-reflection on how she's a creep for Adrien.

Ooh! Yet another funny episode! Flying catfishes, armadas of toys looking for Santa Claus, the Eiffel Tower turned into a Christmas tree, this is something one of my villains would do in my self-insert Miraculous fanfic.

And the final battle takes place in 2007-2009 Roblox. Good to know.

So is Santa Claus real in the Miraculous-verse? It was sort-of ambiguous, honestly. I know Ladybug isn't the best-behavied kid in the world because she's Marinette, aand the more I think about it I don't think he's real.

People were sort-of acting weird in this episode. Was that due to the akuma's influence or something?

I have to admire how hammy Hawkmoth is, honestly. He may be a bad guy but he's relishing in it.

Cute little fun episode. Not much else to say here.

would you be willing to rank the madoka and homura units, respectively? (Like, best to worst homura units, best to worst madoka ones, what’s good and bad about them)? Some of them I can tell are good or bad but some I think are good but don’t see people utilizing or some I think aren’t the best but see people using, but I also don’t know all the mechanics of the game the best. You’re great at understanding all the powers and stuff so I was curious of your take!

uhhh let's see here... I'm not going to rank them because I dislike ranking things but I'll talk about how I feel about each one?

Let's start with Madoka. Madoka has:

Madoka Kaname: Still a good staple for magia/mp teams. Some units can do what she does better, but that hasn't stopped her from still remaining an excellent unit to have-- impressive considering that she is a day one character.

Haregi Madoka: Pretty bad. Her role is to act as a supportive healer by debuffing the enemy and possibly inflicting darkness on them, but to be honest that just isn't really needed. Being able to inflict Darkness is rare, but regular Nemu can do that too and brings more to the table without being a limited.

Ultimate Madoka: Her permanent survive and newly high stats from anniversary make her rather useful; for both PVE and for Mirrors. I'm not entirely sure how she shakes out now, but she's all-around a good unit for keeping your team alive and for dishing out damage. She's basically a support who can also kill.

Madoka-Senpai: I mean. She's a joke unit. She's not meant to be good.

Ultimate Madoka-Senpai: A staple for her charge conservation in places like Kimochi. There are other units that can do what she does in the game now, but that hasn't stopped this april fools unit from being very very good. She, or someone like her, are gonna be necessary to have for certain kimochi strategies.

Madoka & Iroha: One of the best units in the game. Literally. Top-tier.

Swimsuit Madoka: Fills a similar niche to Ultimate Madoka-Senpai but also has charge draw and gives charge conservation on connect. She is a staple for ranked mirrors.

Homura is next. Homura has:

Glasses Homura: Surprisingly had good usage in the last light kimochi thanks to her skill quicken on magia to the entire team. Otherwise she's pretty eh, but she's also free so there's not too much to complain here about.

Swimsuit Homura: She's a beefed up version of Glasses Homura, which doesn't actually say very much. Notably however a number of people found her very useful thanks to her magia/doppel being single target attribute strengthened, meaning that against certain enemies, she can straight up delete them in one hit. Other units like Eternal Sakura can do this too, but it's possible that more people might have Swimsuit Homura for that to work.

Homura Akemi: She's a dark blaster who has been powercrept by tons of other units in the game. Unfortunately her spirit enhancement didn't really help her do any better. She's not bad, but she's not good especially when compared to more modern/more recent units.

Akuma Homura-chan: Still important to Ranked Mirrors. She'll debuff the enemy, she'll give everyone another round of anti-debuff, she'll delete mp if she hits magia. She's a scary unit to fight. Less useful in PVE but some folks find great success in using her during the Hundred Evils.

Haregi Homura: I'm honestly not sure how good she is. I haven't seen too much play with her at higher levels, but it's possible that she just hasn't had a good chance to shine yet. Her SE active (that extends buffs and debuffs) is a make-or-break feature of her kit. She has excellent atk stats though so I don't think you can necessarily go wrong with having her. I think she might be very good for her respective kimochi but that remains to be seen.

Devil Homura: Well, I mean. Yeah she's fucking incredible? turn two doppel in mirrors (and hell, even in PVE) is amazing. There's a reason that everyone and their mom is using her in Ranked right now. She's easily the best playable homura as of current.

Did you fall for the Sonic and Tails in Melee hoax when it first happened or did you know better by then?

I didn't have a Gamecube until 2004 and I didn't own Melee until 2005 or 2006, so there really wasn't much I could do with the information even once I saw it.

By then I had also already started knowing better. I'd grown up with legendary April Fools hoaxes like EGM claiming Akuma was playable in Resident Evil 2, and I'd spent a non-trivial amount of time in high school reading up on ways to get Aerith back in your party in Final Fantasy VII. The very first website I ever created was about testing and reporting back on those kinds of rumors (all of them were fake).

It was pretty obvious what was going on with Sonic in Melee.

I think I might have tried Cruel Melee once or twice and decided that the rumor claiming you had to get 50 KOs meant that even on the office chance it was real, I'd probably never see it, because I'd struggle to get even just one KO. I was never a completionist like that. I didn't even see Green Hill Zone in Sonic Adventure 2 until I bought the PC version in 2012 and downloaded somebody else's full-clear save.

So I had no interest in torturing myself with Cruel Melee for something I knew was almost certainly fake.

I desperately want to make a V3 cover of this song, but uh. I do not have the range to get near a lot of the notes for this song, and since it's so distorted, using a vocal remover to rip the vocals for a midi doesn't work either.

also i'm gonna ramble about this song because... i have a history with it

but also I have a history with this song. Like. Okay, first off, fun fact, it-- or at least the video?? was apparently an april fools project! Like I'm pretty sure at least the video for it was definitely >lets push its dark and ~disturbing~ nature for the giggles-- some parts making this obvious tbh.

But as a kid like, I didn't know this. It struck a chord in me in actually horrifying me. Plus like, admittedly, I was still in my deeply christian raised mindset too, despite some of my likes, so seeing something translating to Devil Ascends or whatever, seeing a pic of baphomet, seeing KAITO on the cross was like. Felt very blasphemous and scared me in that way too wheezes

but I was also. deeply fascinated with it. like it genuinely piqued 14 y/o me's interest despite being scared of it. (this also isn't surprising, my interest and love for KAITO literally started from me actually being creeped out by Yandere KAITO stuff but... being fascinated. Then RP's started, and that sealed it.)

so eventually I, a 14 year old who only knew english despite living in an area and family where I should have also learned Spanish too but it didn't catch with me, wanted to translate it myself to see what the fuck was going on in the song.

Of course, I didn't know Japanese at all. I didn't know how the language worked at all, I didn't even know how sentence structure or word structures worked for it.

But what I did have?

.....2009 era online machine translators.

You can imagine the quality that was spit out by them.

I used multiple of them though, not just Google-- I don't remember the names now, but. I basically translated lines with what was at least 4 different machine translators, also cross referenced some kanji and words with... fuck, was it wikipedia at the time? other google sites? I don't remember, and like. Wrote down my best understanding of the combination thereof.

again. you can imagine the quality of the translation.

BUT. it did at least give me SOMEWHAT of an idea of what was going on in the song... somewhat. Honestly I still felt a bit confused, but there was the general gist of

>...possible demon possession? Demon possession from computer....??? mental breakdown. Trying not to hurt a loved one bc of it I guess???? are they fucking crucifying him. oh he's hoping for god to save him in the final days or something

Honestly. It's one of the 'founding' songs in my head for Proto(the KAITO muse that eventually became 'mansionKai' with retwrites which bacame Kai / Kadin), among other certain yandere KAITO songs.

...because that's the thing, it's also a yandere KAITO song! So that's also some context to think of it in!

I always hoped someone else would see the song and want to do a Proper translation of it, but like... that never happened. Over a decade passed and I never saw a proper, good english translation for it. It's a shame, honestly.

Nowadays, with machine translations, Google Translate has actually notably improved-- and we have the likes of DeepL, too-- but. That doesn't always take into account of context, and other little intricacies when it comes to language and lyrics and such.

And like, I have a cleaned up DeepL translation on the reupload for the song now-- and it IS better than the one I put on it with annotations over a decade ago. But...

It definitely feels like >man. I need someone who actually knows the language and could see things I'm definitely missing to give this song a proper english translation.

(also, I admit, I also sometimes have a hard time grasping even just. how things are said in english sometimes, and what could be better said in english, and such things, so like, that doesn't help)

Anyhow, I do legitimately like the song. The fear of it has obviously passed, and finding out it was an april fools project kind of also has me like >haha. wow. i sure Experienced over what was a joke.

but hey, that's just how art is, I guess.

Honestly, with the DeepL translation, I do feel it still fits as a founding song for Proto, hahaha.

She doesn’t see him die.

They’re separated by the building collapsing all around them, the path between them literally aflame. She thinks if they were near enough— if he’d still been alive —he would have made a pun—( you set my heart on fire milady)— but they aren’t, and he isn’t. He had been trapped on the other side of the fire with the akuma, and even though she’d tried, even though she’d used every bit of cunning and agility and strength she’d had, Marinette had failed.

She doesn’t see him die, but she feels it. She has seen it before—watched as he slipped through time, watched as he was skewered or pierced or thrown off of tall heights—but she has never felt it like this:

Something missing. Something gone. Something so intrinsic that she hadn’t even known she’d had it until confronted with the shape of its absence.

She’d heard the triumphant roar of the akuma one moment, and then the next (even though it’s impossible, because she’d been too far away) a sharp intake of breath and a blinding green light. Chat Noir, revealed in death.

Marinette calls for a Lucky Charm without thinking. And this is world’s worse than conjuring a record so your crush stops dancing with another girl. This is death. That is life. Ladybugs do not meddle in either.

So one moment, the green light, and then the next, the pink. Afterwards, she catches a glimpse of his eyes across the room, frantic with panic and love. And then the building whines and creaks and groans and she’s sinking underneath the flames.

“Hello.”

Adrien looks up from the display of flowers in front of him, expression owlish, body still angled to smell a heavy bloom.

“Adrien?” Marinette tries again; Adrien thinks back to all the times he’s flustered her in the past and wonders if this is karmic punishment.

“Marinette! Sorry, you caught me by surprise.”

Marinette smiles, “I can see that. Fancy meeting you here again.”

“Yeah, are you buying anything?”

They’re the only ones in the front room besides the surly old owner. The space is perpetually hot and humid, and Adrien is struck by the picture Marinette makes: her flushed cheeks, her dark hair, her blue eyes a shock of color in the middle of all that green.

“I was just looking. The weather’s been so gloomy lately that I thought some flowers might be nice. You?”

He takes a moment, wondering how he might answer, when the decision is made for him by the emergence of the old man’s wife from the back of the shop, a large bouquet of red snapdragons dripping ruby red over her arm.

“Monsieur Agreste, your usual is ready.”

“Snapdragons?” Marinette asks, her voice faint.

Adrien takes the flowers from the older woman, his answer absent minded as he carefully inspects the blooms, “Somebody very important told me once that they were her favorite.”

“What a coincidence, they’re mine, too.”

When Adrien finally glances up, Marinette’s half-smile is so sad that he asks without thinking, “Do you want to come with me?”

They end up in a park square a few streets away, sitting pressed shoulder to thigh on a small bench to ward against the cold.

There is the initial shifting and settling and crinkling of cellophane. Adrien looks at the obscenely large bouquet of flowers awkwardly laid across both of their laps, and thinks not for the first time that he’s an impulsive little fool.

“Very cozy,” Marinette says, breaking the silence. It’s nearly impossible to turn and look at each other unless they want to bump noses, but Adrien can still hear the smile in her tone. It automatically makes him want to smile in return.

“Yeah, only the best for my friends.”

Even though it’s stilted and (more than) a little lame, Marinette laughs.

“I don’t remember you offering to pick me up in that limo of yours on the way to school,” she teases.

“Yeah, I didn’t pick up on social cues until at least the end of lycée.”

Marinette snorts, but to Adrien even that’s a generous statement. He had not been kind the last year of lycée, either. He hadn’t been much of anything beyond the grief and rage.

“I’m making up for lost time now,” he says, and pulls a snapdragon from the bouquet.

He holds it out to Marinette with a little flourish, and there’s no reason why she would think this out of the ordinary, but Marinette’s eyes widen, her mouth a perfect “o” of surprise and her face suddenly stark white.

Before Adrien can panic, Marinette’s expression softens, and she takes the flower.

“I love it,” she says, still staring at the livid red of the petals. “Thank you.”

There’s a significance that Adrien is pretty sure he’s missing, but he lets it go, “Like I said, making up for lost time.”

They talk a little about what they’ve been up to: Adrien about university and his tentative plans to apply for a thèse, and Marinette about Shanghai and the small label she’d started in her junior year of university. They skirt around their terminale, and why Marinette had to move in the first place. They do not talk about Adrien’s father, or Paris’ heroes, or the dark time in between.

They talk long enough that they start walking again. After all, Adrien had flowers to deliver.

“Do you do this often?” Marinette asks, looking at the over-large bouquet in his arms. Already, the flowers had swatted three unsuspecting bystanders in the head as the duo shoved their way into the usual metro madness.

Adrien grimaces, trying to shield the blooms from the crush of people around them, “Enough.”

The train is too crowded to speak, but Marinette silently laughs every time Adrien mimes stabbing people taking up more than their fair share of space with his bouquet.

“We’re close!” Adrien says when they get off at the familiar stop, Marinette trailing behind him as he navigates the familiar route.

“Oh,” Marinette says when the statue of Ladybug comes into view, the bronze likeness garlanded with the usual flowers.

It’s a good likeness, but Adrien knows the artist would never have been able to capture everything that made his lady his lady —not the fond curve of her smile or the gleam in her eyes as she considered a particularly thorny problem.

Adrien has never brought anyone with him on his regular visits, but Marinette is different—Marinette had been there too. She stands back as he walks up to the memorial, carefully laying the snapdragons at its base.

I miss you; I hope I’ll see you again; I love you .

When he turns around, her expression is inscrutable.

Marinette is quiet afterwards, but Adrien’s reluctant to let her go. They walk aimlessly around the neighborhood, to-go cups of coffee in hand.

“I’m surprised you’re not mad.”

He takes a sip of coffee to give himself a moment to think. “I was mad—for a long time about a lot of different things, but never at Ladybug.”

“You should be,” Marinette says, so quietly that it’s almost a whisper. The flower he’d given her dangles limply from one hand, and she’s nearly shaking.

They come to a stop at an intersection. Adrien bites his lip, thinking again: Marinette had been there too. Of all of them, Marinette has the most cause to be angry, not Adrien. Not when it’d all been his fault in the first place.

“I’m thankful,” he finally says.

“Then you should have been giving those flowers to Chat Noir—or her.”

It takes every ounce of the self-control that he’d learned over the years for Adrien to not stiffen up. The light changes, and the crowd jostles them in their impatience to cross, but Adrien doesn’t think he can walk and come up with the right words at the same time.

“I am, I’m grateful to them both, but Ladybug…Ladybug most of all.”

He hears a sniffle, and whipping around to face Marinette is distraught to see the tears on her cheeks.

“Marinette—Marinette, I’m so—”

“No,” she steps away from his outreach hand, roughly wiping the tears from her cheeks. “I’m sorry, I think—I think I need to go.”

She’s so quick, turning and hurrying away in the direction that they’d come, and Adrien is left helplessly watching as she is swallowed by the distance.

february 2017

She is floating in a deep darkness; muffled, as if from a great distance, she hears him screaming for her.

She struggles to stay awake, to tell him that she’s sorry, that it’ll be okay—

Don’t fight it, Marinette. She feels the soft flutter of Tikki against her cheek; Marinette lets herself sink.

I imagine the fool’s paradise episode where the loud family did everything in their power to stop Luan from pranking them, only for Luan to prank them one by one until they got her back. So I imagine that happening with the akuma class, the science kids, and the recess kids stopping Marc by sending him away, only for someone to betray them, it probably be Nath to be honest or someone else.

Nathaniel: Looks like it's just you and me, Marinette. What do you say we go hide in the boiler room? *suddenly pulls his sleeve and checks something* Uh, wait. Um...uh, the-the roof is next.

Marinette: "The roof is next?” What does that mean? And why did you just look at your arm?

Nathaniel: What notes?! *starts licking his arm*

*Marinette grabs Nathaniel’s arm and sees it's written with all the places they went to in the motel and theit classmates got pranked at*

*Flashback to Nathaniel walking home. He is whistling casually only to be pulled into an alley by Marc, sporting a malicious grin. He screams at the sight of him*

Nathaniel: *narrating* ...and said he needed an inside man to pull off his biggest April Fool's ever. It was a very sophisticated operation. First, we planted a fake ad in one of Chloé’s magazines. Then we set up a fake writing retreat. Now, that wasn't as easy. Do you have any idea how much it costs to buy land? Then I snuck off to lock the door. And, of course, Marc wasn't gonna miss seeing you all get pranked. The janitor? That's him. He’s been watching everything on the security cameras.

*During the flashback, when Marc checks the cameras, he takes off his disguise and laughs evilly*

Marinette: Nathaniel, how could you sell out your own friends like that?!

Nathaniel: I’m a weak man, Marinette. He knew how to get to me.

*Flashback*

Marc: *Kissing Nathaniel* Do this for me? Please?

Nathaniel: *Grinning* Y-yeah. Whatever you want.

*End flashback*

Marinette: … You make me sick.

Note on an upcoming translation

Later today I will be posting a translation of Akuma no Kiss, a song released by ex-ZOC members Senritsu Kanano and Katy on April 1st 2022 as part of an April Fools’ Day joke.

Before I post my translation, I want to talk about how my feelings regarding the context of the release of this song have undoubtedly influenced my translation. Most of my other translations likely suffer from varying degrees of personal bias, but I felt like it was important to go into detail about this song in particular. This is because this song seems to me to be based on the artists’ real life experiences: experiences that have been publicized, that I have read about in detail, and about which I have strong feelings.

From the time of the song’s release, I’d had a feeling it was about the two womens’ experiences with Oomori Seiko while members of ZOC, but I didn’t take a closer look at the lyrics, and didn’t listen to the song much because after coming to ‘peace’ with how I felt about Seiko’s tirade on Maro, it gave me cognitive dissonance to engage with negative views on Seiko. However, since the recent “settlement” of Kanano’s lawsuit, I decided to listen again. I saw Kanano cry on her Instagram live, and I felt like I couldn’t keep burying my head in the sand regarding Seiko’s actions. When I took a closer look at the lyrics, I was blown away by how obviously, in my eyes, this song was ‘calling out’ Oomori Seiko.

I went into this song with an assumption regarding what the thesis statement of the song was (“Working with Oomori Seiko was hell”), and this undoubtedly shows in my translation. I read it only as it relates to the life and experiences of the artist, and not as a pop song for a broad audience. The truth is, I haven’t come across much discussion about the song’s lyrics, and how unabashedly they seem to reference real life events. So, either it’s so obviously a diss track that people don’t need to say anything, or, it is totally possible that the lyrics aren’t actually that egregious, and that my translation is effectively fanfiction - my interpretation of a situation I didn’t live through.

To attempt to alleviate this, I’ll make another post showing examples of lyrics that were particularly difficult for me to look at in a vacuum, and when possible providing alternate translations that attempt to separate the lyrics from the events surrounding it. You can make your own judgements based on what you know about the 'drama', your understanding of Japanese, and my translation. However, I can't trust my translation of this song to be able to accurately portray the feelings of Katy and Kanano in this situation.

Whatever the case, my feelings towards Oomori Seiko have bittered a lot after translating this song through the lens of all of ZOC/METAMUSE’s history.
