Morning Owl Report: Rescue

As many of you know, my (the human's) life passion is caring for rescue owls.

Many of the owls I care for are able to return to ordinary owl lives in the wild. Sometimes, however, I stumble on a particularly tough case - an owl who simply cannot, for whatever reason, Owl correctly.

Currently I have three such terrible owls in the household. For the most part, my attempts to teach them to be better owls have been unsuccessful. These owls never perch to sleep. They persist in being crepuscular rather than nocturnal. And in all these years, these terrible owls have not grown a single feather between them. Not one!

They do have some occasional victories. For instance, one of them recently ate half a mouse and then puked its soggy fur and bones onto my carpet. There was rather more bile involved than there should have been, but still: A valiant first attempt!

There remains no sign that the other owls have learned from this example, but we here at the Terrible Owl Rescue and Patisserie remain hopeful.

Unfortunately, some owls cannot be rehabilitated at all

Such is the case with our oldest and, sadly, least proficient owl (pictured). It is a sad truth that some rescue owls never regain the skills required to owl safely in the wild. Such is the case with our elderly Gracie Owl, who has not regurgitated even one mouse so far. Gracie Owl is now a permanent resident of the Owl Rescue and Patisserie, where she aids in daily biscuit-making between very un-owlish bouts of napping and growling about kibble.
