Conformity to Social Roles
Different social situations have different norms which give rise to the social roles we play
Zimbardo's (Haney et al) Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE)
Aim:
Find out how much people conform to the social roles of guards and prisoners in a fake prison situation
Procedure:
Standford University basement turned into fake prison for SPE
21 mentally stable male students selected from 75 volunteers
Randomly assigned to groups of 10 guards and 11 prisoners
Prisoners arrested by real police from their homes and subjected to booking process (unaware this was going to happen)
Given smocks and numbers and placed in cells in groups of 3
Guards worked 8 hr shifts and wore khaki uniforms, mirrored sunglasses and carried handcuffs and wooden batons
Study was meant to last 2 weeks
Findings:
Guards increasingly sadistic - forced prisoners to repeat numbers, made to go to toilet in buckets
Prisoners increasingly submissive - stopped questioning guards, sided with guards against rebellious prisoners
After 35 hrs 1 prisoner began to act crazy, scream, curse, go into a rage and seemed out of control and was released
3 others were released for similar reasons
Guards so harmful the experiment only lasted 6 days
Conclusions:
Prisoners and guards said they were shocked by their out-of-character behaviour
All participants conformed to roles to the same extent
Some guards didn't sadistically exert control
Support situational but does not rule out dispositional
Evaluations:
Ethical Issues - protection from harm/consent issues
Ecological validity - Knew they were part of a study - may have altered behaviour - post study interview many said they were acting
Zimbardo acted as prison guard - too involved

Its the way I put my heart and soul into my A-Levels as a straight A and A* student and came out with ABCC, when I've never even seen a C result on an exam I've done in my life. This is ridiculous.

i am a first year A level student!
I study Biology, Psychology, and sociology. I originally did Philosophy instead of biology for about a month in a different school, but then I moved back to my secondary school to do biology.
This blog is dedicated to keeping track of my productivity and to give me study motivation!

hey! i saw in your intro post that you study psychology and i’d love to know how you’re finding it! i’m autistic and i take great interest in it but i’m still not sure if it’s something i want to pursue. thank you 💞
Hi!! So just starting off, I study aqa a level psychology just in case that’s also what you might study! Then I’m studying it at uni starting September :)
But anyway, it’s my absolute favourite thing I’ve ever studied. I love everything about it honestly. A lot of the theories are very culturally and gender biased though, p much all by old, or dead, straight white men. It also makes me overthink a lot of things, but I don’t really mind? My favourite aspect of psychology is biological approaches to theories because learning about the neurochemistry and the Why of things interestes me so much.
Psychology is such a diverse subject in terms of content and can be super content heavy, but that’s one of the things I really like about it.
I also love being able to apply what learn to everything. I’m autistic too and my special interests are psychology and theatre, so I end up revising psychology by applying it to different characters from musicals and god it’s so fun
Lmk if you have anymore questions!!!

Explanations of Conformity
Deutsch and Gerard - 2 motivating forces as to why people conform:
Normative social influence (NSI) - People want to fit in and avoid social rejection so conform to the beliefs and opinions
Informational social influence (ISI) - People want to be correct so they look to the person they believe has the right information and agree with them

The most dangerous thing you can do while revising aqa psychology is saying "I'm right it's just worded differently"
