Another Maël & Chuuya headcanon (ft. Arahabaki)
You know Arahabaki? You know how in some fics, people like to say that it has a soft spot for Dazai? Which is probably why he never got himself absolutely mangled by black holes before he could touch Chuuya?
I’m calling it, this bitch has a soft spot for Maël.
And it’s very, very fucking weird to Chuuya, cause whenever Maël’s around, Arahabaki either quiets down, or it keeps a steady rumble of noise in Chuuya’s head. He has NO idea how it happened, but this bitch calms down so he’s goin’ with it.
I honest to God think that if Chuuya ever had to use Corruption around Maël, Arahabaki would just kinda, cause chaos around Maël, but never actually approach him. He doesn’t come close to the kid, which is straight up either twistedly wholesome, or just downright confusing.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk UnU

A thought,
Would it truly be far fetched? Would it be wishful thinking? Would I be reaching if I said; BEAST!Chuuya is in the Port Mafia only because the original Chuuya will eventually leave it?
This is too early for me to be rambling but I just thought about it. All of the characters in the BEAST!Universe went through some sort of change compared to the Original!Universe. All, except for Chuuya.
He has been a dormant character ever since the 16 light novel, actually. His ideals haven't gone through any major developments since the incident with Verlaine and I doubt Asagiri plans to keep it this way.
Also, whoever says he's loyal to the Port Mafia is missing the point. Because he's anything but that. He would leave if he could. Even Mori knows that, it's precisely why he keeps him close as a right hand man.
Just think about it:
Ever since he joined the Port Mafia after Dazai forced him to, he had shown clear signs of wanting to leave. Only seeking the fastest way to aquire the position of executive, getting his hands on the Arahabaki files and leaving. Even Mori knew that, seeing as he sent the flags to recruit him and keep their eyes on him in the hopes he'd want to stay on his own.
He never felt betrayed over Dazai leaving the Port Mafia. He never regards the matter with any sense of sadness or betrayal, even in his most honest state (drunk), he only shows frustration over Dazai ignoring his calls and blowing up his car before he left, only being bitter about how he himself couldn't leave (yet)
Chuuya isn't as dumb as the fandom paints him sometimes. He'd know better than anyone (yes, even Oda) just how much the mafia ruined Dazai, considering he was the only one to witness the differences Dazai went through after officially joining. (Aside from Mori)
He had shown clear sighs of wanting Murase to actually 'save' him and show him the light. With the way Murase's death parallels Oda's death, do you truly believe that Chuuya would be the one to do nothing whilst Dazai is the one actually affected after such an event?
That, or I'm thinking too much.

I got bored so I'm rambling through all of my Bungou Stray Dogs AU's.
The Sheep King and his Demon AU
Aka Bsd except Chuuya doesn't join the Port Mafia.
The Sheep never betray Chuuya. In fact they are basically one big dysfunctional and loving family.
Chuuya still goes on the search for Arahabaki and meets Dazai. But the Sheep trust him, their wary of Dazai but not Chuuya.
As time goes on, the Sheep warm up to Dazai and basically adopt him like a stray cat. Chuuya and Dazai get together, the Sheep tease them relentlessly for it.
Just a silly lil AU on their antics and Soukoko being Soukoko even though Chuuya remains King of the Sheep.
Agency informant Izaya
Izaya Orihara from Durarara in the world of Bungou Stray Dogs. However this Izaya is quite different, essentially everything in Durarara still happened.
The final fight with Shizuo and the brutal humbling reminder that Izaya was still very much human.
This is an Izaya who has changed, who tries every day to be a better person than who he was.
He came to Yokohama because he was curious if the famous Demon Prodigy was in fact a Demon. And ended up with a whole new life.
He learned to let people in, he learned how to love people. And became the human Shinra always said he could be.
No one from Durarara shows up because Izaya has erased all evidence of him online. He has left Ikebukuro behind and will never return.
Izaya is like Katai in the way he's not technically a member of the Agency but he's still with the Agency. The Agency adore him, Dazai is basically his little brother at this point.
Sometimes Izaya wonders if he deserves this, but he's thankful anyway.
Izaya's firecely protective over them all, and helps out when shit goes down. Usually from behind the scenes.
He has an ability, Sunsets Last Applause, that functions like Ango's except it works through looking at people rather than touching objects.
An AU that takes place across different moments and arcs in canon, either about Izaya or he's in someway involved.
The Port Mafia brothers AU
Aka Bsd except Akutugawa and Dazai have a good sibling relationship
Basically that.
Dazai finds Akutugawa and recruits him into the Port Mafia. What Dazai didn't expect was for Mori to put him in charge of Akutugawa.
Dazai freaks out, because he's in no way equipped to raise a child (child in question is 2 years younger than him.)
The reason Dazai freaks out is because he wants to do right by Akutugawa. He saw a scared kid and wanted to help him, but he doesn't know what to do.
Oda is there to give him advice and reassure him that he'll be fine. That Akutugawa will have to learn to stand on his own two feet in this organisation.
You need to guide him, be a helping hand. Dazai doesn't abuse Akutugawa in this, at all.
In the Port Mafia, Akutugawa is basically Dazai's shadow. He's silent, he's never far from him and almost treated like the furniture, a bodyguard.
For his own protection, no one can know their true relationship especially Mori.
Outside of the Port Mafia Akutugawa is Dazai's silly, bitchy little brother and Dazai is his dramatic, dumbass older brother. Their idiots and they love each other.
Silly lil AU that's basically Dazai and Akutugawa's antics, along with Gin. And Oda keeping an eye on them with Ango.
Moonlit Butterfly
When Atsushi's ability manifested, the Orphanage called the Special Division of Unusual Powers to take him away.
They were fascinated by his ability, see they wanted to start the Hunting Dogs programme. But they didn't have proof a human could survive the procedures.
Hence, where Atsushi came in as their lab rat.
However at some point, Fukuchi learned of him and said such a strong ability couldn't just be wasted like this.
So along side being a lab rat, now Atsushi was being trained by Fukuchi. And let's just say Fukuchi was not a kind instructor. No one treated Atsushi like he was human.
The great war came and Atsushi, now 10 years old was deployed as a soilder. Which is where he met the other kid in his regiment, 11 year old Yosano Akiko.
Yosano had been working at a sweets shop just last week, but was persuaded by Doctor Mori to join the war effort. He told her she could save lives with her ability, and she wanted too.
Neither really knew what they'd signed up for, though it wasn't like either had a choice.
Yosano is the first person to show Atsushi kindness, the first to treat him like a human. Both of them have a sibling relationship and everyone else in the regiment keeps their distance.
They love Yosano one moment and than hate the next as their angel of death. And Atsushi is deemed a demon simply for existing.
Well, not everyone thinks that. The only person outside of the duo who are kind to them is Shunzen Tachihara.
He's an older sibling to them. Yosano and Atsushi remind him of his little brother and Shunzen's always there to let them have those little pockets of ease and joy during the war.
(Entire regiment: that's an angel/Demon
Shunzen Tachihara: Those are children, leave them alone!)
AU is basically the embodiment of the universe bought them together, ripped them apart and somewhere along the way they found each other again.
Because Shunzen... Meets his canon fate, Yosano and Atsushi are seperated after the war. Yosano to the psychiatric hospital, Atsushi back to the lab.
But with the efforts of one Genuis Detective they are bought back together again.
And if I can figure out a plot, this one might become an actual fic. Mostly centers on them in the war but does include afterwards.
The Wary Weretiger
The Orphanage never let Atsushi forget who he was. Atsushi remembers killing Shibusawa and was told about why he came.
Shibusawa wanted the tiger, most people want the tiger. Atsushi doesn't really know why, just that it's unique the tiger and because of the power it holds.
The Headmaster really told Atsushi almost everything. The man was many things but a liar wasn't one of them.
He taught Atsushi that the only one you can trust is yourself and Atsushi took that seriously. The only being Atsushi trusts other than himself is the tiger.
The tiger and Atsushi are close, they are the only one each other have. Because of that Atsushi has better control but not completely.
Atsushi doesn't trust anyone else. Every adult in his life has let him down, has tortured and abuse him.
He runs away from the Orphanage and lives on the streets.
He knows the Guild are after him, he's met Fitzgerald and knows about Fyodor. Atsushi has even met Doctor Mori, who was an old friend of the Headmaster and curious about his ability.
So when Atsushi gets asked to join the Agency, he refuses. Because he believes they just want his ability. They did start the whole thing by searching for the tiger, so... Fair assumption.
And while, true the fact the rampaging tiger is actually a homeless teenager definitely shifts everyone's priorities.
They work to build up trust with Atsushi, wanting to show they truly want to help him.
But Atsushi doesn't want their help, he's gotten this far on his own. He's been hunted his whole life, known pain as a constant companion.
He doesn't know what to do in the face of genuine kindness.
Unfortunately the threat will continue to grow and Atsushi will end up having to ally with the tiger.
He's smart, cold and has a short temper. But underneath it all he's just a kid that wants a home.
The Agency swear they'll give him one, one day.

For the fanfic asks: 🤩 and 🦅
Hi!! :D
🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?
Since I talked about Chuuya in the other ask I just answered, here I will talk about Dazai — because honestly I love writing them both, just in different ways :0
If the Howl AU was me digging into Chuuya’s character, the equivalent for Dazai is probably the “This is how it feels to take a fall” fic— despite the fact that a good portion of it isn’t actually in his POV. I think Dazai is a really interesting character to show from other people’s perspectives, because he has so many layers of masks that even his sincerity can be distrusted, just from sheer contamination by all his bullshit.
…Now, big qualifier that this is how I personally tend to interpret his character, but I do like to characterize him as being not actually that complex beneath all his facetiousness. Yes, he’s clever, but his successes have always come across to me as being more a matter of information gathering, lots of contingency plans, and a fair amount of luck, rather than superhuman genius. I mean, if he was infallible then a) he would have been able to magically figure out that Chuuya was Arahabaki in Fifteen instead of being surprised as he was, b), he would have known exactly what Chuuya was going to choose at the end of Stormbringer instead of preparing backup plans in case Chuuya decided not to fight, and c) he would have been able to prevent the Mimic incident before it got to the point of Oda dying.
Anyway this has turned into a ramble, but basically I just really enjoy writing his character from that perspective. In “This is how it feels to take a fall” I wanted it to be clear that he was backsliding into his old patterns of behavior due to sheer desperation, and that that wasn’t a good thing for him or anyone else around him. Yes, he managed to save Chuuya, but he caused a lot of collateral damage while doing so, and he’s going to have to work through that emotional burden and figure out ways to make amends for that.
In the end, he’s a character who changed his entire life’s trajectory just because of a promise he made to his friend! When that’s kept central to his character, I think he’s really compelling.
🦅 Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?
Kind of a combination of both! My first three fics I barely planned at all before diving straight in, whereas the little mermaid AU, this is how it feels to take a fall, and the Howl AU (and now the skyline pigeon fic, too) have all required more planning. That said, I don’t think my outlines can entirely be considered as proper outlines because I am not the most organized person in the world — and I frequently have to change things around while writing because I’ll get to a part where I think “this wouldn’t make sense for this character right now actually” and i find it’s better to switch gears rather than forcing it.
Examples of my “outlines” from my note files (a bit of the Howl AU but mostly the little mermaid AU because I was losing my mind planning that one out)

skk’s relationship is so much more complicated than ‘they hate each other they want each other DEAD they’re TOXIC’
Like while this is more obvious in the novels and other media like Dead Apple, you can see this just from the anime. Like ik the anime doesn’t provide as much context as the manga+other content but you can still tell they’re relationship isn’t that simple.
To start off with, skk first met as some REALLY emotionally/mentally fucked up 15 year olds.
Dazai, though we know nothing about his life pre-15, is as fucked up as they can be. He is extremely suicidal and sees no point in living at all. For Christ sake, he’s in the goddamn mafia. His only influence is Mori, who is a pedophile bastard who only sees Dazai for his intelligence & ability and neglects the fact that he is a 15 year old who clearly needs help.
Chuya is literally a fucking vessel of god. He doesn’t have any memories prior to the Arahabaki incident. He is the head of the Sheep, which just means he is in charge of protecting a bunch of powerless orphans who also have a lot of issues. He’s also a very trusting and loyal person - he values friends. When the Sheep stabbed him he looks genuinely surprised and despite them literally trying to kill him, isn’t mad at them and takes Dazai’s deal so they aren’t killed. He blames himself & Dazai for the incident, but not the sheep. Then he proceeds to join the mafia & swear loyalty to Mori, and no matter how much I love the members of the mafia it’s not what you would consider a healthy environment.
You really expect Dazai and Chuya who met under these absurd conditions to develop a normal, healthy relationship? Like
And as for wanting each other dead, they do say that but it’s not actually… genuine? Again more examples in novels etc but even in the anime during their fight against Lovecraft, you can visibly see that Chuya is extremely concerned when Dazai pretends he’s dying. And when Corruption doesn’t seem to be affecting Lovecraft, Dazai voices his concern of Chuya not making it much longer. Yes, this is more likely an ‘Dazai has low physical fighting stats and can’t defeat Lovecraft on his own’ concern but still. They both can’t really afford the other one dying even if it is for their own benefit and not concern for the other. (I would personally argue that they have concern for each other but that’s a debate for another day)
The rest is kind of my own interpretations but I feel like the reason skk fight all the time and are like ‘god I wish you would die already’ because they are polar opposites.
Even visually they’re opposites. Dazai with the dark hair and eyes and the slim, tall figure. Chuya with light hair light eyes and short, muscular figure.
Personality even more so. Dazai is often not very emotional, distant - even though he is physically human, emotionally, he is very much so ‘No Longer Human’, especially during the Dark Era. Chuya on the other hand is very much so human despite being the vessel of god. Like I said he is fiercely loyal. He’s compassionate. He likes people in general and is depicted to have a pretty large social network. In Stormbringer, Dazai even refers to Chuya as ‘disgustingly human’ (sorry if it’s worded differently in the translated version I’ve only read it in Japanese)
That’s the whole point of their dynamic - they’re opposites. They’re partners. They’re supposed to complement and complete each other. Dazai the brains, Chuya the humanity, and when Chuya uses Corruption and becomes god, Dazai’s No Longer Human returns Chuyas humanity. Idk if I’m making any sense but like to me, that’s such a poetic and cool dynamic.
Like yeah, skk isn’t some average normal healthy relationship that you want to mold your own social life after, but there’s so much more context and nuance to their relationship I just…… idk. I probably didn’t make sense in all my rambling but I’m also not normal about these two in any sense so I guess it’s fitting

If given the chance to live, what personality do you think Chuuya's clone would have had?
Gosh. Poor dear clone boy didn't get much of a chance to have one of those, did he. I probably go off topic a couple times, but I promise speculation on his personality is actually in here somewhere.
So. I don't trust a word out of N's mouth at any point in time. He's a horribly unethical scientist and even worse father figure but he does seem to be a relatively decent liar. This is the only decent thing about him.
That being said, if N were to be believed, then the boy in the coin-flipping video demonstrating a self-contained singularity is poor Cloney.
Quoting N's words:
"The owner of the self-contradicting skill. Other than his skill, he was an ordinary boy born in a hot spring district in the San'in region. This special vessel was calibrated so he wouldn't be crushed by the singularity's gravity. That's the only reason why he's still alive."
Looking back at the scene of the coin video, we don't really see much of the boy himself.
Someone was twirling the coin between their fingers. They were young fingers, but everything past their arm was off camera, so it was impossible to see who exactly the person was. They were, however, speaking in an almost singsong manner.
Whoever's in the video recites a couple verses of Upon The Tainted Sorrow. Not the activation verse we know, though.
Someone was holding a glittering coin in the center of the screen, but the camera was too far away to make out their face. The only thing discernible was how oddly spacious the concrete chamber was.
The video is obscured. We can't confirm or deny if it was Cloney in the video, we only know that he's young. But for the sake of speculation, let's say he is. To rule out the idea that it might be Chuuya in the video for the sake of narrowing down options: Chuuya had residual memory, or at least recognition, upon walking into Research Facility B, as its layout is similar to Research Facility A, aka what is now Suribachi City. He's got a pattern of that--seeing snippets of his true past having to do with the Arahabaki program, and it sparking his memory. He didn't do that when watching the coin video, so I'm just going to assume that whoever it was, it wasn't him. It would be off pattern for him.
I have one more quote to pull before rambling about what Cloney could have been like. Unfortunately it's the bit where he dies, but y'know, I only have so many scenes to pick from.
His face was no different than Chuuya's, but his eyes were a little kinder and much feebler. The boy grabbed Chuuya, his gaze pleading. He opened his mouth as if to say something. His lungs filled with puff of air. And that was it. His life had come to an end.
That's the part that really gnaws at me. His eyes were a little kinder. Assuming this is the same boy that has been a living experiment used to create an advanced version of himself (or having been created) and really only knowing dangerous experiments or a murky tube for going on 16 years now, seeing kindness in his eyes is almost baffling. You'd expect him to be kicking and screaming against anyone coming near him, probably. Or some kind of resignation, maybe. But he spent his last breath trying to communicate.
If he'd made it out of Facility B, I like to think he'd have been a hopeful sort. He probably wouldn't have been very well, though. The coin video scene notes the subject (Cloney) going into cardiac arrest. And surviving that comes with a lot of complications (unless the facility had some kind of healing ability on hand, but I'm calling that a 50/50 shot at best. The kindest thing I can imagine is trying to design transferable healing abilities in a similar way to how ability weapons were produced, but that may be too optimistic.) If I ignore the physical complications, there's extremely high rates of depression and anxiety after surviving cardiac arrest, which would probably be made worse by Cloney's living conditions for the last several years.
Verlaine is a bad example of how any reasonable person acts, but one thing pretty understandable is his distrust and paranoia of pretty much everything. And arguably, Verlaine has the most similar background to Cloney. So lets borrow some Verlaine traits, too, maybe.
And the fact that in the video, he spent most of the time flipping a coin. Young Cloney probably thought he was so cool like some movie character. I think his coin flipping is kind of similar to Chuuya's bit in Fifteen asking for hard rock music while he beats people up. They're both losers that wanna be action heroes at heart, to me.
It might manifest differently, but I like to think from his final scene that he got a lot of Chuuya's resilience (y'know, the kind that Verlaine really lacked.) I think coming out of the lab he'd be a very troubled boy, but really that would make him fit right in with the cast around him. But still trying to make the best of things. I think he'd like bad action movies. I think he'd be a little claustrophobic, a little afraid of the dark, but adverse to big empty rooms too. I think he'd like being around people. I don't think he'd want to join the Port Mafia, and he'd definitely steer clear of the Special Abilities Department. So of our major Yokohama-based organizations, the best place for him would be the Agency... but I don't think he'd want to be there either. I don't think he'd want anything to do with any ability based organizations at all, really. I kind of doubt he'd be up to learning any coin tricks after what happened the last time, but that idle hand habit never really goes away. Maybe he'd pick up cool methods of shuffling cards and end up working as a dealer at the Sky Casino or something weird like that. I don't know, really. We only have one scene we know is Cloney, and some speculation, but I think he'd have a few traits similar to Chuuya, but maybe without some of his aggression. I think he'd have a few traits similar to Verlaine, too. And every character that struggles with humanity struggles with it in a different way, and I'm sure he'd be no exception to that. Lots of issues and problems, but I think he'd be the kind to just want to move on. I think Kenji would fix him.

This is just a bunch of rambling as I look deeper into Dazai and the potential connection between Arahabaki and him in the bsd universe. Please ignore.
Arahabaki was a God of prowess and defiance. "N" could refer to Nagasunehiko, a man who worshipped Arahabki to the point that he was driven to madness. Mucj like N who went completely insane over the Arahabaki project.
Dazai Osamu was born in Kanagi, in the northern top of Tohoku. Arahabaki was an ancient God in the northern parts of Japan including Tohoku where there are the nost amout of shrines dedicated to the God.
The original inhabitants of Tohoku are thought to have worshipped Arahabaki as the main God. Baki also has scattered shrines in other regions, however only as a guest god.
Guest gods are those that share the land with another God. God's that may have lost their land to another and are therefore inferior. Could refer to Chuuya's primary ability being replaced by tainted due to the Arahabaki project.
Arahabaki has a lot of connection to false history, you could present that as a link to war propoganda but that is honestly a stretch. Unsurprisingly however Kihachiro Wada, the author of the "documents" was a lying liar who lied.
The connection I think Arahabaki has with Dazai is limited imo. Arahabakinis a convenient God to use because it is linked to one mad man who rebelled against a King and false history which can be linked to propoganda common in wars. Furthermore Arahabaki was seen as a God for wars about to come, the Arahabaki was meant to create an ability that could nuke the enemy in the future.
Dazai's ability can however restore balance. It works on the original self contradicting ability and nullifies Chuuya. Only in Dazai's presence, the ability that was supressed gets to be the primary one. The only people who can tell you the truth about a place are people from that place. The lies relating to arahabaki involve a lot of false history of Tohoku.
Furthermore, Dazai the author has been linked to religion, christianity in particular. And the man is believed to be was uninterested in the religion itself but obsessed by Christ's purity of heart (Oda, Chuuya being the people he is obsessed with in bsd who he considers to be deeply human and kind in their own way). Christ being the only human part of the christian trinity. One theorist even states that this was filling a void in Dazai's life. Dazai in bsd remarks about both Chuuya and Oda in the light novels that they make him feel positive things when he usually feels like their is a gaping void in him.
However, Dazai's works lacked the depth he was trying to give them by using the christian motifs and biblical passages. This could reference bsd Dazai's current spiral as he lives with Oda's philosophy.

Hi! Your recent post about gods existing in BSD caught my attention and I felt sending this as an ask would work best for conciseness. In response to your tags, Arahabaki is actually just a singularity and not a god. [https://www.tumblr.com/originalaccountname/711614312754692096/sorry-to-bother-you-but-ive-been-getting-into-bsd?source=share] [https://www.tumblr.com/originalartblog/713410888979316736?source=share]
Also, as for other gods, I'm of the belief that Lovecraft is a god (y'know like eldritch gods) that's just able to take a human form. This is supported in that Dazai's ability doesn't nullify Lovecraft's because it isn't an ability, it's just him. This is also further supported by another theory but since there's the possibility it doesn't turn out to be the case, I won't mention it— but I will say that there is another person with god-like origins that Dazai has made contact with that his ability didn't nullify.
Lastly, there is Atsushi whose ability may be Baiho (or at least similar), the White Tiger God in Chinese mythology (called Byakko in Japan). The White Tiger that is Atsushi's ability has been repeatedly shown to be of its own sapience which is notably different from abilities like Kyouka's Demon Snow and more along the lines of Twain's Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. (Like the times he talks to and reconciles with the Tiger)
With the movie Dead Apple, Atsushi's ability is shown to be very special and there was also the major plot point of what occurs during season two where it was explicitly stated that Atsushi's ability specifically was the key to finding the book. Heck, him being hunted by the Port Mafia in season one was because of the Guild trying to get their hands on him.
To add, his ability working phenomenally in tandem with Akutagawa's is a potential allusion to Byakko's mythology. I'll be quoting it's wikipedia for this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Tiger_(mythology)
“As with the other three Symbols, there are seven astrological "Mansions" (positions of the Moon) within the White Tiger.” Beast Beneath the Moonlight
“In Chinese art, the white tiger often appears with the dragon. The white tiger symbolizes power and army.” Akutagawa is that dragon, which is obvious in the meaning behind his surname Ryuunosuke. The first character in his name 龍 (ryuu) means dragon because the real life author was born in the year of the dragon during the month of the dragon and the hour he was believed to be born was the hour of the dragon. His name, Ryuunosuke, literally translates to "son of the dragon". [http://yabai.com/p/4517] Whether Atsushi is like, Byakko incarnate or it's just his ability or something else, or even he straight up isn't actually a god— we don't have anything that confirms or denies it yet. Also I am sorry for rambling in your ask box, the topic of gods in BSD is something I'm rather passionate about.
First of all, this is sp incredibly interesting and I am fascinating at how my semi serious post has now given way to an actual craving for Lore (I'm trying to hunt down an edition of 15).
The whole Lovecraft thing definitely confused me and doubly so because I definitely thought (hoped) that since he's immune to Dazai he would play a larger role in the plot. I am curious though, as to whether Dazai coming into contact with Lovecraft would have any impact on his physical abilities, like limiting his speed or agility. (I suppose I am thinking a little of BNHA here. Eraserhead can't erase mutant quirks, but presumably could erase like, effects of a mutant quirk e.g: spitting acid or so) But he spends most of the fight bragging about Chuuya to Steinbeck so we don't really get to see how the two abilities would interact. It's interesting especially because Dazai CAN nullify Chuuya in corruption and Atsushi in his fully tiger state (which is a physical transformation) but has ZERO affect on Lovecraft's tentacle form.
(I'm desperately trying to think of the 'god like origin' character because I can't think of other BSD characters that Dazai's ability didn't affect... is it like Sigma or something, because he was created from the book?)
I was aware of Atsushi as Byakko, though I genuinely interpreted the 'consciousness' of the ability as moreso Atsushi's introspection, a visual way to show his personal healing and acceptance, though it's really interesting to know I was wrong! When I have time I'll have to rewatch those scenes with a fresh perspective. I was super into the Shinto belief as a kid, and it was actually how my friend persuaded me to get into BSD, and I'm loving the series so far. However, I'm honestly more familiar with the Qinglong and Baihu as the dragon of the East and tiger of the West.
(I had a very funny moment watching Dead Apple where I was insistent to my friend that 'Atsushi will definitely have to match off against the dragon, there's a lot of mythological basis' only to be proven completely wrong, though with the amazing Chuuya fight scene I couldn't be disappointed)
But I had completely missed the connection between Akutagawa and the dragon! That definitely adds a really interesting level to the dynamic between the two as members opposing forces with the matched goal.
Thank you so so so much for explaining this all in such an interesting way, it really made my day! I super appreciated it!

Totally canon BSD scenes
Where Dazai and Atsushi are taking a walk around Yokohama and encounter an unexpected pair…
Atsushi: “Dazai, how’d you get so strong?”
Dazai: “Hm~? What do you mean?”
Atsushi: “Ah— well, your ability doesn’t exactly enhance your strength but you rarely, if ever, get hurt in battle…”
Dazai: “Oh, I’m just naturally that skilled~”
Dazai’s boasting is suddenly interrupted by a familiar ginger making an appearance…
Chuuya: “Oi Dazai, don’t you lie to him! Atsushi! I’ll have you know Dazai’s only as ‘skilled’ as he is because he sparred with me back in the day!”
Akutagawa: “DAZAI, I WOULD NEVER QUESTION YOUR STRENGTH LIKE JINKO!”
Dazai: “Ew, ignore him Atsushi. Chuuya’s confidence is far bigger than he’ll ever be.”
Atsushi: “To be fair, I know Mr. Chuuya is really talented and skilled in battle—“
Akutagawa: “DAZAI, I WOULD NEVER QUESTION YOUR OPINION LIKE JINKO!”
Chuuya: “Oi Akutagawa, you better question it if that’s a negative opinion about me! The fact that Dazai is still alive after fighting a god like myself proves he’s only strong because of my strength!”
Dazai: “Deeming yourself a god is a bit much isn’t it, Chuuya~?”
Dazai gives Chuuya a knowing, mocking look…
Atsushi: “Dazai, maybe Mr. Chuuya is just—“
Akutagawa: “DAZAI, I WOULD NEVER QUESTION YOUR NAME-CALLING LIKE JINKO!”
Tumblr media
Chuuya sprite cutout by @meddlehaven
Chuuya: “WHO’S SIDE ARE YOU ON?!”
Dazai: “Let’s go, Atsushi. They’re both delusional.”
Atsushi: “Ah—“
Akutagawa: “DAZAI, I WOULD NEVER—“
Chuuya: “DELUSIONAL?! Did floating in the river too long wash away your memories?! Atsushi, I have no idea what this idiot over here has told you, but I’ll have you know you’re standing in front of the vessel of Arahabaki! The god Arahabaki!”
Chuuya posed in such a manner that Atsushi swears looked similar to a certain over-expressive anime he’s seen…
Atsushi: “Um, Mr. Chuuya, have you possibly been d-drinking today?”
Dazai: “Atsushi is right! Akutagawa, why don’t you take Chuuya home? He’s so drunk he’s rambling about gods and trembling.”
Chuuya: “I’m trembling with rage you dumb*ss! I’m not— Akutagawa, stop dragging me!”
Dazai: “Here’s a perfect example of why you should never get this drunk, Atsushi.”
Chuuya: “I AM A LIVING GOD!”
Akutagawa: “Chuuya, home.”
Chuuya: “DO YOU THINK CORRUPTION IS A NORMAL ABILITY?! LOOK AROUND YOU! I’VE USED THE BUILDINGS OF THIS CITY TO BEAT A DRAGON! YOU CALL THAN NOT GOD-LIKE?!”
Dazai: “Chuuya might be able to lift more than me, but I can hold my liquor better than he can. Let’s go back to the agency, Atsushi”
Atsushi: “Alright, but what about—“
Akutagawa: “DAZAI, I WILL ESCORT CHUUYA HOME BETTER THAN JINKO EVER COULD!”
Atsushi: “What did I do to you…”
Chuuya: “Grantors of dark disgrace—“
Dazai: “A-Atsushi! Let’s help get this poor drunkard home before he does anything too reckless~!”
Chuuya: “GET YOUR HANDS OFF— YOU’RE ALL LUCKY I CAN’T USE MY ABILITY NOW!”

i wanna hear everything all abt them pleabse,,,,,, fuck actually watching the show im gonna consume it through friend rambles in chapters
hehe sounds good >:D
so i've been thinking lately about dazai, and more specifically like. his mental state. bc even if you don't know much about the show you probably know at this point that his main quirky character trait is that he's always trying to commit suicide (like he's literally introduced in the show by attempting drowning and getting rescued by atsushi)
So~! let's go through this stage-by-stage shall we.
the earliest we know of dazai's past is that he met mori when he was 14 after a suicide attempt. i assume mori was working as a doctor in the hospital he was in, but anyway, we don't know a ton. apparently the Day After he met mori, mori assassinated the previous port mafia boss and had dazai become his witness and right hand man. in the like two scenes that are shown about this dazai looks super soulless, and not necessarily upset or even remotely concerned that any of this is happening. so like, definitely not great stuff going on up there.
then, we have a year long timeskip to the fifteen light novel, where he's (you guessed it) fifteen. he's a lot more chill in this timeskip like personality-wise, honestly he does just act like your average teenager ("i'm borreddddd i don't wanna live anymoreeee" and "do you actually think living is worth it 🤨"), but his interactions with chuuya are a lot more in-depth to his character. he toys around with chuuya a lot, and clearly sees him as the epitome of humanness (unlike him), because of how energetic and earnest he is
two scenes in particular i want to point out here: first, the scene where dazai stops in front of an injured enemy and basically goes "hey you're bleeding out and will probably die in five minutes. do you want me to kill you so you don't have to suffer?" when the enemy says yes, dazai picks up his gun and shoots him like six times. i'm just gonna link the scene because it's a masterpiece and gives me chills (yes it's literally just ten seconds of gunshot noises shh)
youtube
but so like. Holy Shit™, you know? he's fifteen and not even officially a member of the mafia at this point. what happened. why is he like this? the only reason he stopped shooting is because chuuya kicked the gun out of his hands, and even then it's like. clear that he wanted to keep going. like. hm. concerning.
the SECOND scene is just the part where chuuya tells him and rimbaud that he's arahabaki (for context, arahabaki is a literal god that blew up a large section of yokohama in canon). dazai is dumbfounded by this revelation, not only because he didn't predict it despite predicting the majority of the events of fifteen, but also because it just doesn't make sense to him. as already established, he sees chuuya as like. the Meaning of humanity. he's so human. he has human emotions and human bonds and he's so heart-achingly alive, and yet here he is, revealing that he's only really existed for 8 years and that he's not even really a Person.
i think fifteen is actually the lowest point in dazai's life, because he's been working with mori for a year (mori is like. canonically a pedophile sadist who likes torturing people so. yk. there's some subtext to be taken from that.) and at that point didn't have any friends or anyone to associate with outside of mori. so meeting chuuya was his break and kind of set him up for the rest of his life, because no matter how terrible his life could become after that, he had someone to remind him of his own humanity.
ok next up, the dark era! the start of it all!
dazai is 18 in this arc, an executive of the mafia, and friends with two dudes, odasaku and ango. i don't remember a lot of his arc, so i'm gonna keep it kinda concise, but basically it opens with dazai in a bar with his friends talking about the shootout that he was involved in. he's injured, so they're all like, oh god did you get shot, but he just laughs and goes "nah i had to pee but i tripped and fell in a ditch and got a lil banged up :(" (<- this actually happens i cannot make this shit up)
so it shows that he's still suicidal, but again, his personality has shifted. rather than being completely apathetic and uncaring, he's enjoying himself and he's having fun with his new friends.
so blah blah, stuff happens that has nothing to do with his mental state, OH RIGHT ACTUALLY THERE'S THIS ONE SCENE. there's this scene where they're confronting a bbeg and the bbeg pulls a gun on dazai. dazai not only ignores this threat but actively Walks Towards The Bbeg, calling him a coward for not shooting him when his forehead is up against the barrel. so that's something.
also there's all this shit with akutagawa and the cycle of trauma that dazai passed onto him, but i'm talking specifically about dazai and that could be a whole nother essay on its own so i'm not going to touch on that.
ANYWAY, so odasaku ends up getting shot. dazai panics and runs up to him, (iirc) trying to stop the bleeding and begging him not to die. and then odasaku says fucking THIS to him:
youtube
(the ending is a meme i apologize this was the best version i could find 😭) (also tldr in case you Don't want to watch all this i'm surprised if you're even reading this far: "whether you're fighting for good or fighting for evil you'll never be happy, so go and do good person things even so")
and you can see how shaken up dazai is. this is the most emotion he's ever shown in the show, like. Period. odasaku was his best friend and he was also extraordinarily human, he had a future ahead of him and kids and he died because of mori, and his final words to him are literally just telling him he's never going to be happy. why wouldn't this make him cry. anyway i digress
so, because of this, dazai ditches the mafia, and he goes and joins the armed detective agency.
from here on, you get Present Day Dazai, who is an actual clown and uses humor as a coping mechanism. he tries to kill himself basically every day, to the point that when he calls his coworkers telling them that he's on the verge of death, all of them just tell him congratulations and hang up on him.
BUT. but.
if you take notice of his suicide attempts throughout present day, you can see that absolutely none of them are serious. attempted drowning in a shallow river (twice), mentioning a nice support beam and how good it would be to hang from, a Literal Non-lethal Torture Technique, eating sus mushrooms--they're all attention catching, but not particularly deadly.
and here is where i hit you with my thesis: dazai doesn't want to die anymore.
he might joke about it, he might try it sometimes, and yeah, he;s still incredibly fucked up, but he doesn't want to die. he's learned to fight for the side of good, and he's living not only for odasaku but also for all of his friends. after meeting atsushi in the first season, his suicide attempts also dwindle until theyre practically nonexistent in the later seasons. this might just be the author toning down on some incredibly dark jokes, but! it also might just mean dazai is finding his will to go on.
this theory is solidified by dazai's last few lines in season 4. even though his suicide attempts are coming to an end, it's clear that he still views humans as dull and confusing creatures that he doesn't understand and doesnt want to understand. but, when fyodor gives his speech about how weak humans are and how god looks down on them, what does he say?
"humans aren't nearly as boring as you make them out to be."
i think the true character development of bsd is dazai's growing fascination with being alive. it starts before the present plotline even begins, and it continues on in stride just as easily. when he meets atsushi, dazai admires his conviction and will to keep going. it inspires him, and it causes him to keep going.
i really do think at this point that dazai's final line in the series will be something along the lines of "ehh i dont really feel like suiciding anymore" or something like that bc i mean. just LOOK at this development

how exactly does verlaine join the mafia in the pm boss yosano au? in canon he joined for chuuya, but since chuuya never joins the mafia here (or dazai), does that mean that rimbaud is alive as well?? is that the reason why verliane joined?
HI ANON!!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE ASK!
okay so this may a little underwhelming bc at one point i just did consider putting Verlaine in as an exec and just. not explaining it. for the funny. BUT!! I've got it ironed out to an extent i can talk about it now so: (also this may be waayyy too much information than needed lmao i ramble a LOT)
Rimbaud is not alive in current time (i'm referring to this as the Atsushi era) but was alive prior to Verlaine joining the mafia.
So essentially, Verlaine still ends up betraying Rimbaud in order to free Chuuya from whatever plot the french government had in mind. Chuuya joins the sheep, and Rimbaud still joins the Port Mafia (under Mori, this is important)
So fastforward 5 years after Mori's death and Yosano's takeover. Yosano is 19 at this point, Chuuya is 15. Yosano finds old documents of Mori's detailing Arahabaki and his plans to recruit the ability user in the future. Yosano, along with sub exec Randou (she is unaware of his identity as a spy at this point) begin to investigate/try to find Chuuya.
Rimbaud betrays Yosano for his own means, since he does not hold the same respect for her that he did for Mori. He planned to get a hold of Chuuya to lure out Verlaine in order to find out what happened to him after the lab explosion. This plan goes awfully wrong however, resulting in his almost death at the hands of Dazai and Chuuya.
Yosano, after finding out about his betrayal, finds Rimbaud almost dead, and instead of saving him, as he begs her to, she leaves him to die as punishment for going behind her back, and for lying about his identity, which she had uncovered after realising he'd betrayed her.
A year later, the word of Yosano announcing that she'd killed a French spy for infiltrating her organisation travels to Verlaine, drawing him back to Yokohama to see whether it was true. He finds Yosano easily and attempts to kill her for supposedly killing Rimbaud. This leads to him witnessing her ability.
They make a deal, that if Verlaine helps her with one of her plans, that she will give him the location of the thing he has been searching for (Chuuya). Verlaine agrees. He goes after Chuuya, attempting to kill the sheep in an effort to get Chuuya to go with him.
Chuuya refuses, and resolves to get revenge after Verlaine killed 3 of the sheep. Adam shows up, and Dazai, who is Chuuya's friend and had sensed something amiss from his intelligence networks, attempts to help Chuuya get rid of Verlaine.
While this is happening, Yosano takes the rest of the Sheep hostage behind Chuuya's back, striking a deal with Shirase for the sheeps freedom in exchange for Chuuya. Shirase then joins Chuuya in attempting to get rid of Verlaine, and accompanies him and Adam to the Lab where they meet N. Shirase rescues him, despite planning later to betray him and secretly working for Yosano.
Verlaine, after the stuff with N and leaving the lab/being revived by illuminations, then attempts to kill Yosano, accusing her of knowing of what would happen the entire time, only to miscalculate, as she brings herself back with Thou Shalt not Die and escapes.
Shirase, as per Yosano's plan, leads the others to Verlaines location, where he is poisoned by Adam and Chuuya, and inevitably defeated by the mystery gang, which i have dubbed them.
Yosano meets Verlaine again and they have a conversation in which Yosano admits to knowing what would happen, but that it didn't really matter, because Verlaine never would've listened to her anyway. He asks about what it was Yosano wanted from him in the beginning, and Yosano replies that he'll have to stick around to find out, convincing him to join the mafia, begrudgingly as he still has a debt to her, which Yosano left vague from the beginning in order to hold over Verlaine's head to force him to join the mafia, knowing he'd never join if she requested it.
God i put waaaay too much exposition into that i did not need to explain that in so much depth but!!! This is essentially how Verlaine joins the mafia in this AU. I spent sooo long trying to iron this out completely so im pretty happy with the stage i got it to considering i'm shit at articulating the swirl of shit that goes thru my head in regards to these aus aha.

tysm for your explanation! it is a good way to balance it out so the reader wont be too overpowered! i did read the character profile, but just one thing im not very sure of, is the domain expansion, isnt it a cursed technique?
regardless, reading your gojo reader stories always makes me so happy🥰 i hope u had a great day
no problem anon !! i'm happy to answer and ramble about my writings' concepts actually, hope you won't get bored of it (*/▽\*)
as for gojo! reader's infinite void, i tweaked it into something that gojo! reader has access to due to her contact with sugawara michizane.
it is also considered as the arsenal or the primordial of gojo! reader's limitless ability, not something of a domain expansion in my bsd oneshot series writing since bsd has no cursed techniques and such.
since infinite void requires the use of the six eyes, which is something of a non-occular ability that is similar to lovecraft's case, i made it as such—which is dazai osamu not being able to entirely nullify it, but rather only when it is used on him. as long as gojo! reader doesn't use it on dazai even if he's inside the void or domain, and is at a good distance away, infinite void works.
just for context, while it is canon in the jujutsu kaisen world that sugawara michizane is one of the three vengeful spirits and an ancestor of gojo satoru, for gojo! reader in my bsd writing—sugawara michizane is a god just like arahabaki, but with the addition of gojo! reader being a descendant of him as well and him being labeled as the god of skies since arahabaki is considered a god of chaos.
i also made it so that gojo! reader got the six eyes from sugawara michizane even though in the jjk canon world, it is inherited within gojo bloodline to change things up a bit !
