The Nebra Sky Disc - bronze, gold - Unetice culture - Early Bronze Age - c.1800-1600 BCE
The Nebra sky disc is a bronze disc of around 30 cm (12") diameter and a weight of 2.2 kg (4.9 lb), having a blue-green patina and inlaid with gold symbols. These symbols are interpreted generally as the Sun, a lunar crescent, and stars (including a cluster of seven stars interpreted as the Pleiades). Two golden arcs along the sides, interpreted to mark the angle between the solstices, were added later. A final addition was another arc at the bottom with internal parallel lines, which is usually interpreted as a solar boat with numerous oars, though some authors have also suggested that it may represent a rainbow, the Aurora Borealis, or a comet.
The disc was found buried on the Mittelberg hill near Nebra in Germany. It is dated by archaeologists to c. 1800–1600 BCE and attributed to the Early Bronze Age Unetice culture. It served as a reminder of when it was necessary to synchronize the lunar and solar years by inserting a leap month. This phenomenon occurred when the three-and-a-half-day-old moon —the crescent moon on the disc— was visible at the same time as the Pleiades. As preserved, the disc was developed in four stages:
Initially the disc had thirty-two small round gold circles, a large circular plate, and a large crescent-shaped plate attached. The circular plate is interpreted as the Sun, the crescent shape as the Moon, and the dots as stars, with the cluster of seven dots likely representing the Pleiades star cluster.  At some later date, two arcs (constructed from gold of a different origin, as shown by its chemical impurities) were added at opposite edges of the disc. To make space for these arcs, one small circle was moved from the left side toward the center of the disc and two of the circles on the right were covered over, so that thirty remain visible. The two arcs span an angle of 82°, correctly indicating the angle between the positions of sunset at summer and winter solstice at the latitude of the Mittelberg (51°N).  The final addition was another arc at the bottom, identified as a solar boat, again made of gold, but originating from another different source. By the time the disc was buried it also had 38 to 40 holes punched out around its perimeter, each approximately 3 millimetres (0.12 in) in diameter.

The purpose of this paper is to make public the exceptional discovery in the province of Essaouira (Morocco) of three petroglyphs engraved with an original subject in Moroccan rock art.
Regardless of the cultures involved, observation of the sky and astronomical bodies has been of worldwide interest since prehistoric times. Petroglyphs have been found around the world and have been interpreted by researchers as signs of the Sun, of Moon and of supernovae. However, very few of them have been interpreted as bolides, comets and meteors or meteorites. It is not difficult to admit that these events could have been interpreted by early societies as bad or good manifestations of the gods and; therefore, carved on rocky surfaces to be admired by future generations. In fact, Bailey argues that phenomena related to meteors and comets seem to have played an important role in the beliefs and social habits of most civilizations.

After carefully cleaning Ida 1 (brushing and vinegar), the only engraved side of this piece features a spectacular scene of a man and woman apparently panicked by the fall of a meteor.
Tumblr media
overall view of the petroglyph Ida 2
Identically on Ida 2, not yet cleaned of its clay and sand gangue and under the secondary precipitates of carbonate drandruffs, we can identify a scene that includes a fleeing anthropomorph and a large car.
Tumblr media
After cleaning, Ida 3 symbolizes a scene that includes an anthropomorphic, two cattle of different sizes, a meteor and a figurine of the sun with concentric circles in the center. To complete his ideogram, the artist has arranged two lines of inscriptions with Tifinagh characters with blunt incised lines on the sides, showing, thus, an image-inscription association that is arranged in the interval that remains free, where it blends harmoniously. These Tifinagh inscriptions, which are difficult to translate, are quite old, it is impossible to date them precisely.

First Day of Summer (astronomically speaking) ---
Near as I can tell, the halfway point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice (called the Celtic cross quarter of Beltane, though it predates the Celts and goes back to early agrarian cultures) is today, May 5, 2023, at 7:35 PM Pacific Daylight Time.
Summer Solstice is Midsummer. Today is beginning of Summer.

Armillary spheres are an old form of tracking movement through the sky with a globe-like structure. Not as portable or easy to use as an astrolabe but a wonderful teaching tool
James Morrison’s Astrolabe:
The Latin word for “ring” is armilla; thus, an armillary sphere is a sphere made out of rings

Astronomy at Stonehenge
Stonehenge was built around 5,000 years ago, around 2500 BCE. It's an important historical landmark, yet we still don't fully understand how, or why, it was built. Relatively recently, in the 1960's, it was discovered that Stonehenge functioned as an astronomical computer, capable of predicting the next eclipse, the sunrise on Midsummer's day and making calenders.
Tumblr media
One of the most important things about Stonehenge is the location of the Heel stone. During the summer solstice sunrise, the sun will rise directly above this stone and shine into the heart of Stonehenge. This was discovered in the 18th century by physicist William Stukeley. William Stukely was very influenced by his religion and ancient mythologies, and was responsible for the widespread belief that Stonehenge was mainly used in the summer. However, in the 20th century, lots of breakthroughs were made that revealed that this theory was wrong.
In 1963, Gerald Hawkins found 13 solar correlations and 11 lunar correlations in the alignment of the stones. One of thse correlations was during the winter solstice, when the sun setting would set down the heel stone and shine through the monument. This theory is backed up by remnants of sacrificed pigs that were found- their age at death indicated that they were killed around December and January every year. Contrary to the most widespread belief about Stonehenge, there is no examples of it being used in summer!
I hope you enjoyed reading and learnt something new!

Review: Black Genesis - The Prehistoric Origins of Ancient Egypt - by Robert Bauval and Thomas Brophy
I’m a big fan of Robert Bauval’s work. I have been an avid reader of his writing since I first encountered the seminal ‘The Orion Mystery’ several decades ago. He is a deep, intelligent author that tests a reader’s intelligence and as an unorthodox, archaeo-astronomer that revisits and questions mainstream archaeology he often gives a fresh outlook on ancient sacred sites, giving modern…

Darcy Lewis x Female Reader 827 Words
Darcy catches you staring at her as she works on her project.
It was late, and you were sat cross-legged on Darcy's bed while she sat hunched over her books at her desk. The blue light from her computer illuminated her face - her dark brown hair framing her face perfectly - as she clicked her mouse and scribbled in her notebook and you couldn't help the small smile from forming as you dazed dotingly at her. Darcy's eyebrows knitted together and she pushed her glasses back up with the first knuckle of her forefinger before moving closer to the screen, as if proximity was the reason why she was so confused, and you bit your lip to hold back the chuckle that was threatening to escape you.
Darcy's eyes traced the words on the screen before quickly jotting down the new-found information on her messy page. And, as she moved her focus from the screen to the pad resting on her knee, she noticed you watching her. Her gaze flicked up from her book and landed on you. The look on your face nearly knocked the breath from her lungs and she swallowed her nervousness.
"What're you staring at?" She mumbled with squinted eyes, the end of her pen pressed against her bottom lip.
"You." You answered with a sly smile on your lips and you watched in amusement as your girlfriend scrunched her nose and shake her head whilst looking back down at her work, but she wasn't quick enough to hide the steady blush covering her cheeks. Gods, she was adorable. She had been working for too long and you wanted her back where she was supposed to be - in your arms.
"Hey, what are you hiding for?" You teased with a smirk. "Let me see your pretty face," you pleaded with a pout, "please?" With a roll of her eyes, Darcy looked back up at you with a light scowl and all you could do was grin at her.
"I love you," you sung, your eyes sparkling full of adoration, and Darcy felt her heart leap out of her chest and all she wanted to do was press it into your hands; exposed in its wholeness, fragile and beating, faithful in whatever you would do with it. You had her whole heart and she wanted you to have it. Nothing could have prepared her for the way she loved you and never, not even in a million years, did she expect you to return those feelings.
"Stopp it, you're distracting me, I'm supposed to be working," she groaned and threw her head back to rest against the back of her chair.
You let out a light laugh as you walked to stand behind her chair, "what, I can't tell my girlfriend how beautiful she is and that I love her?" You shrugged as you rested your hands on the arm rests and leaned over to place a kiss on Darcy's cheek. "What are you even working on?" You questioned as you looked up at the computer screen. "Ar-" your eyebrows furrowed as you looked closer at the word, "Archae-" you frowned, it should be easy, two words you knew put together in one, but it just wasn't working for you. "Ar-chaeo-astron-omy," you finally butchered out and Darcy responded with a belly laugh.
"What? No, I said it, that was right," you defended, but Darcy continued to laugh. "You say it then." You huffed in defeat.
"Archaeoastronomy," she squeezed out, voice light from laughter, with a grin on her lips - the scene causing your heart to flutter. You pursed your lips and left to leave, back to the bed. "Noo, come back," Darcy protested as she wrapped her hands around your wrists and dragged you back to stand in front of her. You stared down at her with a smile on your face when she pulled you down closer to her and pressed a kiss to your lips, "I love you too," she smiled against your lips and you gave her another peck.
"Come to bed," you begged Darcy as you moved back, "you've been working for hourss," you dragged out, "and it's bed time." Darcy's eyes flickered to the clock on her computer and let out a sigh.
"Finee," she let out in faux annoyance, truthfully, Darcy didn't think that she could keep her eyes open any longer, and turned off her monitor before you pulled her up from her chair and toward the bed.
She watched as you crawled under the duvet and you felt her slump onto the bed next to you. After a few moments of movement, the two of you finally fell silent and you felt yourself relax into Darcy's arms. Her gentle breathing lightly tickled the hair behind your ear and she smiled as she felt your finger drawing patterns across the skin of her arm. With one final deep breath, Darcy pulled you in and pressed a soft kiss behind your ear before you were both lost to a dreamless sleep.

i have like a severe interest in archaeoastronomy and firsthand observations of the night sky and the techniques that humans have been using to observe for like utter millennia. and so this had led me to a weird position where even among my fellow astronomy people i'm like, too knowledgeable about certain aspects of it such that none of them know wtf i'm talking about. like yeah my one coworker will make a metaphor and say that something is like an oscilloscope, and we all nod our heads and agree because we all know what an oscilloscope is and have done experiments using one. but if i mention like, the nebra sky disc. i'm the only one who gets it

Autumnal Equinox: 22 September 2022, 6:04PM Pacific Daylight Time
Yes, Daylight Time. We don’t change back to Standard Time until the wee hours of the morning on 7 November 2022.  But never fear! (or, Fear! -- depending on your belief in Astronomy) The California Legislature is trying to decide how to follow along if the Federal Government goes to permanent Daylight Savings Time.  There is, alas, little hope that leaders will Follow The Science, eliminate the clock changes, and stick with Standard Time year-round.  Ceterum censeo DST esse delendam.
