Kites and Kestrels Around Ardrossan
Kites and Kestrels Around Ardrossan
Dear Reader: I am driving back to Adelaide from Marion Bay and the Innes National Park at the tip of the York Peninsular. The weather is overcast and I have tucked the cameras away after a successful couple of days photographing this lovely area of our state. Grey Kangaroos in Innes National Park Marion Bay area After an hour’s driving I am on the York Highway (B86) near Ardrossan; a coastal…

Charles Duguid was born on 6th April 1884 at Saltcoats, Ayrshire.
I only learned of this man 4 years ago, and have to say, if ever there was an apt name for a man “Dr Do Good” as he became known has that honour.
Duguid was the son of Charles Duguid, a teacher, and Jane Snodgrass Kinnier, daughter of Robert S. Kinnier, a surgeon, he attended Ardrossan Academy, where his father was Headmaster between 1882 and 1889, and the High School in Glasgow, before studying medicine at Glasgow University he gained a Master of arts in 1905 before going on to gain degrees in Medicine and surgery. Whilst teaching at Glasgow University, Duguid worked as a doctor in the slums of Glasgow, but in 1911 he signed on as ship’s surgeon for a voyage to and from Australia. This experience led him to emigrate to Australia in 1912. His early medical work in the Glasgow slums developed in him a compassion for the underdog which continued throughout his 102-year life.
After settling in Victoria and marrying an Australian lass, who tragically died in 1927, he remarried in 1930, both Duguid and his wife were idealists and humanitarians, the murder of a white man by Aboriginals at Landers Creek, Northern Territory, sparked Duguid’s interest in their rights.
The police shot 17 Aboriginals during the course of the hunt for the murderer, but official records at the time state that at least 31 people were killed. In 1934 he headed to Darwin, but missed his connection from Alice Springs after responding to a request to perform some emergency surgery there and stayed on for three weeks. He was appalled at the way Aboriginal people were treated there and by their poor living conditions.
Duguid’s wife Phyllis, founded the Aboriginal Advancement League in 1935 and Duguid served as President. In 1937, Duguid helped to found Ernabella Mission in the Musgrave Ranges of South Australia. He lectured and spoke in the UK as well as Australia and New Zealand about the conditions of the Australian Aborigines.
Duguid was active in other organizations concerned with the advancement of Aboriginal rights such as the Council for Aboriginal Rights and the Association for the Protection of Native Races. He also led the 1947 campaign against the establishment of a British-Australian rocket testing program at Woomera in the Central Australian Desert. He worked closely with Donald Thompson to inform the public of the harmful effect that this program would have on those people still living traditionally, nearby.
In addition to his work with Australian Aborigines, Duguid helped to found the Australian branch of the English-Speaking Union, of which he was Chairman in 1932. In 1935, he was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of South Australia. Duguid died in Adelaide on December 5th, 1986 at the age of 102.

Update Number 8
Made it to Glasgow without so much as a single issue. I took the ferry from the island into Ardrossan Harbor, which dumped me right out onto the train station and the next train into Glasgow left 10 minutes later. Beautifully synced up! Then I got to chill at the Glasgow train station for an hour waiting for mi madre to make it in on her train. Found her, we headed to the hotel, and she then realized she’d lost her wallet *face palm*. By some mad stroke of cosmic luck, someone had found it and turned it into the lost luggage area of the train station so we were able to get it back within the hour. Needless to say, there were several paranoid wallet checks following that.
From there, we took a bus towards the university where there is a park with a bench overlooking the city dedicated to Scott Hutchison, the lead singer of Frightened Rabbits (very good punk band). It was beautiful and emotional. I definitely felt like Chuck was with me in some way looking out over the city. He would have loved that park.
The next day, I lifted at that cool gym again (Central Strength) and then we went and got massages! It was so lovely, but damn my therapist went ham on my back. I feel like I’m more sore from that than I was from the lift. Following our massage, we hit the Christmas Market for a sausage as a snack before we had a delicious Italian meal for dinner at Amore. It was Christmas season big time there - there were single use Santa hats at every place setting. Such a fun way to wrap it up in Glasgow!
Today we took the train from Glasgow to Edinburgh. I had visited Edinburgh when I studied abroad a few years ago, so I had some idea of what I was getting into, but I had forgotten just how lovely this city is. It feels so historical and quaint despite being a fairly large city. After settling into our hotel, we headed for the area around the castle where I remember finding some absolute gems of stores (one of which was a bookstore where I found a copy of On the Origin of Species that was printed in 1901!). We toodled around there for a bit before making our way to the Christmas Market which, quite frankly, puts all other markets to shame. It is absolutely massive. We got crepes and wandered around for a good long while looking at all of the local crafts on display. I wish I had more luggage space so I could buy all the cool things! Alas, I am horrifically limited.
We finished today off with an impromptu sushi dinner that was surprisingly yummy (my previous experience with sushi in Edinburgh was……… subpar). Tomorrow should be a busy day full of touristy things!

Stumbled onto some footage of some of my favorite parts of the Yorke Peninsula and now I am literally pining. ::whines:: I need a deserted beach!
If you want to see where I holiday and try to get to when I can, check out this video. So many places, so many memories.
Spots important to me are Port Arthur at the beginning, followed by Ardrossan (which I photograph every time I’m there, also amazing bakery for lunch, good place to stop about 150km from Adelaide). Port Vincent is also a good lunch spot, they have a great back beach to explore as well. Stansbury is a great place to stay, good pub and the tide goes out a huge distance. Wool Bay is an amazing place for wildlife. This is where we saw our first blue-ringed octopus and when the tide goes out, the rock pools in the limestone are amaaaazing. Coobowie is great for birdlife. Edithburgh is where we stay, but not where he shows. In the background of one of the shots of the caravan park, you can see a sandy peninsula in the distance. That is Sultana Point, very much like Black Point, but much, much quieter. Ignore Black Point, that is where many of the rich people in Adelaide take their holidays. I’ve only driven over there to have a nose 😁 But in any case, it might not look much, but it is my backyard and I love it.
youtube
Mick looks at the fishing abd caravan spots, but these are not my focus. I’m there for the beaches, the rocks and the wildlife 😁 It is there, if you know where to find it.
