Euphorbia pulcherrim is known as poinsettia to those of European origin but cuētlaxōchitl in the Americas. This older name has roots in the Aztec language Nahuatl, meaning “flower that withers, mortal flower”. Originally a sacred plant used in ceremonies to celebrate the birth of Huitzilopochtli during the winter solstice, they were also used for medicinal and healing purposes, and dyeing fabrics.

It is an iconic symbol of the holiday season native to Mexico, where it is called “Flores de Noche Buena”. According to legend, a young girl named Pepita was too poor to offer a gift for Christmas Eve at her church. In the spirit of giving, she gathered weeds and placed them at the altar. Miraculously, they transformed into beautiful plants, symbolising her purity and the thoughtfulness of the humblest gifts.

The plant’s most distinctive feature is its colourful bracts, often mistaken for petals. These modified leaves surround small, inconspicuous flowers. Although traditionally red, more recently white and pink varieties have gained popularity. They have become a symbol of joy and festivity worldwide and contribute importantly to the horticulture industry as a best-selling potted plant.

Maybe in the far future, he'll trust you with some more complex types of magical acts. For now, you're reduced to a couple of menial, less troublesome spells and wards.

The dullahan is extremely adamant that you never pursue magic related to the undead and stray from fiendish magic as well. It could harm you, he's not sure how susceptible you'll be to their influence. One needs a strong mind to deal with any kind of magic, but especially those two.

If he notices you taking matters into your own hands and trying to learn differing, more elaborate exdcutions, Patches will put a stop to it and nip that interest in magic right at the root.

The evening settled.

Félix had taken Julieta’s advice, ignoring Camilo entirely for the time being.

While Pepa still was in disbelief and couldn’t make up her mind, so she had retreated to their room to avoid everyone.

Félix had decided to go with Julieta and Agustín when they went to check on Mirabel for a third time since they’d come home. Even though the chances looked she wouldn’t be conscious.

To their surprise, however, she was awake and curled up against Luisa, but not doing great.

Mirabel refused to eat or drink anything, still feeling nauseous. Though Agustín did leave a glass of water for both girls on Luisa’s bedside table.

Julieta had convinced Luisa to step aside for a moment, so that she could have some time with Mirabel.

“She’s been awake for ten minutes. She’s not done much,” Luisa admitted, whispering. “I tried reading to her, but she just cried throughout. She is in a lot of pain.”

“I can imagine,” Agustín said.

“She’s terrified too. She doesn’t want to talk about what happened. I can feel her little heart beating so fast when she’s thinking about it.”

“Rest assured, Camilo will be punished.” Félix replied.

“Good. I refuse to let her go, I’m keeping her with me.”

“Just letting you know now, mija - your sister also wants a day of getting to nurse Mirabel.”

“Isabela!? She can barely keep a stick alive!”

“Luisa, we spoke about this—”

Mirabel made a miserable noise.

“I’m fine. It really isn’t that bad, Mama. In fact, I already feel much improved.” She insisted. She glanced at the book. “Where is Lu? When is she coming back?”

“I’m here,” Luisa called from behind.

Mirabel still found that moving made her very dizzy, hence why she hadn’t moved. But she slowly forced herself to turn her upper body around, facing the other side of the room where Luisa, Agustín and Félix were.

Luisa clambered back onto her bed, adjusting Mirabel more comfortably.

“Sorry. I-I thought you had left.” Mirabel mumbled.

“You don’t need to keep apologising, you haven’t done anything wrong, hermanita.” Luisa said gently. She flickered her gaze among the adults, mouthing, “We can talk later. I’d rather her be comfortable and distracted right now.”

The parents, though tense and unsure, nodded in understanding. They backed away quietly and slowly.

Félix hesitated for a moment before following after them.

Agustín shut the door quietly.

He sighed, “At least she’s awake now.”

“She’s not doing great,” Julieta wrung her hands. “She looks so pale.. I don’t want her going to sleep until she’s drank and eaten something.”

Félix left the couple to it, returning to his and Pepa’s room, where the weather had seemingly calmed a bit since he was last in here.

“I saw Mirabel,” he said.

“What did you say to her? Did you ask about Camilo? What did she say?”

“Very little. I didn’t speak to her. She’s struggling to keep herself from crying out in pain. It was more important to let Julieta speak to her - I didn’t want to stress her.” He took a breath, sitting down on the bed beside his wife, taking her hand. “I know this is a shock, but she’s not okay and Camilo needs to learn what he did was wrong.”

“But he didn’t do anything. I know he didn’t; he wouldn’t. And you heard Agustín.”

“He didn’t put a stop to it either, Pepita.”

Pepa didn’t respond.

The clouds above thundered and darkened.

“I’ll talk to Camilo and give him his punishment. But only after someone does the same to Luisa.” She paused. “Fair is fair.”

this site claims that juan balme assigned the scientific name euphorbia pulcherrima in the 1600s (binomial species names were pioneered in the 1750s)

one article claims that the aztec winter festival that used poinsettias is "fiesta de la veintena" ("festival of the 20th"????) (again one must assume that this is. not the precolonial name). this (shockingly) does not seem to be the name of an actual event. it seems like they just googled "aztec festival" and found something about the festivals on the 20th (i.e. last) days of the aztec months (cf. "la fiesta de la veintena de quecholli"--ie the festival of the 20th of quecholli) and decided to just... roll with it and assume nobody would fact-check or want further details??

wikipedia's citation for the claim about the legend of pepita/maria (reference 29 on the poinsettia page at the time of writing) is this article, which. literally does not mention the legend at all

i went through juan balme giraud's bibliography (incidentally a couple articles in that list seem to be nonextant save for being cited in other publications) and there sure is no mention of poinsettias, but he did write about how hawthorn tea makes you piss hard

im obsessed with this vox video on the history of poinsettias where they parrot the claim that franciscan friars grew poinsettias for nativity scenes and illlustrate this by. showing a nativity painting and having poinsettias manifest around it. because there are no actual depictions of the friars doing this. because it isnt true

according to wikipedia "Nothing is known about pollination in wild poinsettias" (wiki's source) which makes the "grew through a crack in willdenow's greenhouse" thing even funnier

Julieta vs Pepa: The Mirabel Years

* Pepa has been trying to steal Mirabel since she was a baby

* The husbands playfully argue

* While Pepa and Julieta know that if they don’t Mirabel would be taken away

* When Pepa met Mirabel the first time, she was in Julieta’s room

* Mirabel was tiny smaller than most

* Which made it a more difficult pregnancy for Julieta since she was born early

* Mirabel should have been born May 6 but instead March 6th was the day

* Pepa look at Mirabel and instantly fell in love

* “She’s mine” Pepa declared it to Julieta where she was laying in bed

* “I just gave birth, can we discuss it later? Camilo needs his mother” Julieta was amused since this wasn’t the first time it happened

* Julieta shouldn’t have let her guard down

* At 3 months Mirabel was taken away from Julieta by Pepa, she even got Felix to do it as well

Encantober prompt 1-Caterpillar

The thunder rolled above Pepa’s bed. Julieta hovered in the doorway for just a moment, before grabbing Bruno’s hand and pulling him from where he was hiding in the hallway into their sister’s room.

“Pepa?” she called quietly as they approached the bed. A soft moan was the only reply. Julieta sat on the edge of the mattress. Bruno hovered nearby, one hand clutching his opposite arm, looking like he wished he could melt into the rug below his feet.

“Leave me alone.” Pepa’s voice was muffled by layers of bedclothes.

Julieta pulled them back until she could see her sister, riotous auburn hair completely obscuring her face. “It’s going to be okay, Pepa.”

“Easy for you to say! Bruno saw your wedding, everything goes off without a hitch!”

“I couldn’t see who she was marrying though!” Bruno held his hands up defensively.

“And he saw your wedding too, Pepita,” Julieta began smoothing Pepa’s curls away from her tear-stained face.

“He saw me in a wedding dress in a storm!” Pepa bolted upright and lightning flashed around them. Bruno dove for the bed, ducking under the covers. “And then he tells me my boyfriend is going to marry someone else!” Pepa began swatting at him through the blanket.

Bruno yelped and tried to wriggle away from her without uncovering himself. “You asked for the vision!”

Pepa sighed and flopped dramatically into Julieta’s arms. “I really thought he was the one. That’s why I asked you to look.”

Julieta laid Pepa down and curled next to her so she could hold her. Bruno poked his head out to see if it was safe, then scooted up to rest his head on Pepa’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry about the vision. And about him.”

“I know, hermanito. And I’m sorry I asked for the vision. I said I wouldn’t anymore.”

“If I could just see who you two marry, we could skip all this.”

“I’m glad you can’t see,” Julieta piped up from Pepa’s other side. “I don’t want to ruin the surprise.”

Bruno considered this briefly. “I don’t like surprises. And I don’t like my sisters getting hurt.”

Pepa’s eyes filled with tears and she reached for Bruno’s hand, squeezing it gently. Rain dripped off the canopy of the bed, but the thunder had faded away.

“I think maybe we’re just not ready to know,” Julieta said thoughtfully. “When we’re ready, Bruno will see, or he won’t, but we’ll know anyway.” Her eyes were soft, thinking about a distant future with an unknown sweetheart.

“But when will we be ready?” Pepa sniffled.

“When is a caterpillar ready to be a butterfly? He doesn’t know until he is.” Bruno made his “this is very wise and you should heed my advice” face that he’d been practicing dutifully.

Instead of filling his sisters with awe or reassurance, however, Pepa rolled her eyes and elbowed him in the gut before she and Julieta lost themselves in giggles.

Bruno figured laughter was just as good though, and the rain had stopped.

Hi Thanks for the ask!

Green, hands down. Been my favorite since I was a kid and I've always associate it with science, particularly the life science (a field I do enjoy). Imo all the shades are pretty good, all bangers.

Black is also a good bitch. Simple, reliable, easy to dress in, I feel a little spooky ooky in it.

Pink, on the flip side has been my least favorite color partially because of the this one book I read as a kid called "Pepita Thinks Pink/Pepita y El Color Rosado". I've come around to the color thanks to the game Flight Rising and the bi flag.
