you, funny enough, met izumi at the grocery store in the spices aisle

you were unable to decide between which spices were necessary for the curry recipe you were about to attempt, staring at your phone screen with obvious confusion

what was the difference between each type of curry? which one was better? you scrolled down, reading off the countries,

“india, thailand, malaysia, china, south africa, japan...” you mumbled inaudibly before you heard a very distinct crash in the next aisle over. someone must’ve just hit their cart into a display or—

you saw a girl with long brown hair and pink eyes with... wait... were her pupils heart–shaped? you stumbled back as she approached like she was on a mission, standing a mere few feet from you as she smiled pleasantly at you like the situation wasn’t out of the ordinary at all

(oh no... was she one of those pyramid scheme scammers?)

“are you making curry?!” she questioned, leaning forward to glance at your screen only to squeal in excitement at the confirmation. you gulped, nodding with a tinge of doubtful fear

if you said yes, were you about to be attacked right here and now in the middle of a grocery store? you just wanted some curry...

“i’m so happy for you! do you need help? i know the perfect combination of spices for any type of curry! i can make a different curry for each day of the year!” she offered to help, putting her hands together with a pleading look like she was dying to talk about curry

you nodded again and her entire face lit up again, going off on a rant without taking a moment to breathe

she was so knowledgable on all types of curry! you took notes diligently, deciding on japanese chicken katsu curry as the meal for tonight

when you told her, she clapped her hands and giddily jumped up and down. it was honestly refreshing to see someone so enthusiatic about food!

“i’m sorry for randomly talking to you, but i just love curry! do you need help looking for the rest of the items?” she offered to help, already with an armful of the spices you needed and dumped them into your cart

you pondered, thinking as you looked at the girl. she was nice enough, and clearly wasn’t much of a threat if she was willing to approach a stranger without any discomfort

why not? you smiled, offering your hand out to shake as you introduced yourself. she took it quickly, enthusiatically shaking it up and down as she giggled

“izumi! glad to meet you!”

from that point forward, you two became best friends for life!

izumi was the life of the party and brought happiness wherever she went. not only that, but she was incredibly polite and kind! it wasn’t everyday you met a girl that was full of life and always determined to overcome any obstacle in her path!

izumi would go through anything and everything for her friends despite how busy she was 24/7. she juggled being the mankai director (which was babysitting 20 boys), helping other acting troupes, and cooking at night but still made time to see you at least every week

you weren’t surprised when you were encouraged to come over for a company dinner one night and saw so. many. variations. of curry set up at the table. like the other boys, you attempted to hide your grimace (but very poorly, you weren’t a trained actor like the rest of the entourage was)

“what’s wrong? are you okay?” izumi’s motherly instincts kicked in as she hurried to put her hand against your forehead. you had to pretend like you were coming down with a cold the rest of the week and forced the curry down your throat

(the boys secretly gave you water under the table, whispering advice on how to bear it and grin as they made up fake situations to pass your chair)

(the high schoolers just looked relieved to not be the victim that night)

(seriously... so. many. variations.)

(every time you were invited to a meet–up, you texted the groupchat named “stop the currian” to see if izumi was making curry)

(she always was. you still ate it because you loved her too much to say no)

but other than curry, izumi loved cooking! she was subscribed to sooo many culinary and baking channels on youtube. she loved sending you links with a follow–up text that said: “wanna make this tonight? i know you want to eat it! ;)”

(you complained about how it always ended in a minor food fight you had to clean up. you still let her in when she knocked on your front door with bags of groceries)

(after so many visits, izumi was beginning to be proficient at other forms of culinary like baking since you enjoyed it so much)

one time, you even convinced izumi to make her own youtube channel. you had set up a camera omi loaned on a tripod, acting as the best cameraman ever of course

(you had a clapperboard that had the production titled, “izumi is replacing bon appétit’s claire” with take 1 freshly written)

“you got this, izumi!” you encouragedly put a fist in the air, “fighting!”

izumi nodded cutely, wearing her favorite striped shirt with a pastel pink apron. she held a automatic whisk in her right and was already posing with a mixing bowl in her left, ready to demonstrate how to make your favorite dessert

(maybe you suggested the idea because you wanted food, who knows?)

counting down vocally, you watched as your fingers dropped down to a zero and the red light on the camera started blinking. it was go time, and izumi immediately got into action

“hello, everyone! my name is tachibana izumi and today we will be making—”

the camera fell off the stand as izumi’s whisk flew out of her hand and smacked the lense directly in the middle. a sickening thud echoed through the apartment as you two stood in shock, staring at the expensive camera with unease. it didn’t look... uh... functional?

you quickly put your finger on your nose since it was an unspoken rule that touching your nose automatically meant opting out. you were a second earlier than izumi as she gasped like she was offended

“i am not telling omi!” izumi freaked out, running over but the damage was already done. the camera definitely didn’t turn on anymore

(you and izumi bought the same camera that day and switched the memory cards) (omi raised his eyebrows at the sudden newness of his trusty camera, but didn’t say anything as he just took it and thanked you for bringing it back safe)

(yeah... omi definitely knew. but, he wasn’t too bothered to say anything about it)

(“izumi? what did you spend so much money on last month?” sakyo reviewed her financial statement, watching as she nervously sweat and glanced at omi. he just shrugged like he had no idea)

so you two stuck to mindlessly watching the cooking channel on the tv. it was the usual weekend: becoming insecure over the unreal and extremely talented kid bakers who made a whole 3–tier cake in two hours, making fun of america’s worst chefs when they didn’t know how to cut a chicken, and yelling at cheating cooks who were way too competitive on chopped

it was better that way, anyways. maybe going viral on the internet wasn’t meant for everyone. you still got your dessert, much to your satisfaction

(“yeah, yeah. it’s only because you’re my best friend.” izumi laughed, shoving the plate with extra servings as you stuffed your face. she just fondly rolled her eyes as you tried saying thanks with your mouth full)

(“gross!” izumi squealed, throwing the kitchen mitts at you as you fought back, nearly hitting her with one of the pastries. you already know what happens next. izumi stopped baking for you for a long time [a month] as punishment)

speaking of baking, izumi loved making the most ridiculous cakes you’ve ever seen in your entire life

on random days, she’d make the most creative cupcakes ever with individual designs with meticulous attention to detail

(izumi always had to slap masumi’s hands away from the white box she’d set aside specifically for you. he’d pout, hurt, wondering why she didn’t make any food other than curry for him)

(“masumi... you really need to look at other girls.” you remembered advising him, sympathetically patting his back as he angrily accused you of being in love with izumi, too! to this day, it’s still awkward on your end when you see masumi and he thinks you’re his lifelong competitor)

but on important celebrations like your birthday and anniversaries, her cakes were... something. they’d be the most delicious things on earth, but the design would be comically ugly. she’d put the most bare minimum art ever and write the words way too big and it wouldn’t fit. there were always misspellings. maybe it was a curse for being so well–rounded?

another fun fact was you and izumi were the ultimate power duo! whenever you two went to hang out in public, you always made sure some creep wasn’t staring at her and she did the same for you all the time

as friends, it was your job to make sure you two were as safe and sound as possible

(one time, an absolute douchebag tried to wolf whistle her and izumi had to stop you from getting into a fight in broad daylight)

izumi was way too nice. she was such a selfless person and often acted like the big sister you never had. she was always ready with the most agreeable advice and showed up with her arms open. she was so giving, it was easy to see why everyone loved her

but you liked giving back, too! (much to her surprise) you even tried your hand at making some new form of curry by throwing in random spices and calling it a day, but you realized she was the most critical judge ever for any type of curry

(you stopped making curry for her. she would narrow her eyes and push her imaginary glasses up like an anime character. it was terrifying, she always appreciated it but... you shuddered, izumi was scary)

once, you even rented that curry truck to come by for her birthday! you never saw someone look like they were this close to passing out from maximum happiness

(you even bought a director’s chair for her with izumi bedazzled across the back)

(she now sits in it to get that extra confidence boost before a big show)

but the most important gift that kept on giving was spending quality time with izumi when she needed it most

when the anniversary of her father going missing came back around, you were the first person at her room. with curry you knew she liked from that really one obscure place and all the time that day to make sure she way okay

(she was such a big sister! izumi always claimed she was fine and it was just another normal day, but you were always there to provide comfort she didn’t even know she needed)

you took time out of your day to help her with all her mudane tasks after you saw she once physically fainted from tiredness

(it almost gave you a heart attack the first time, but then you noticed tsuzuru also did that too so it must’ve been something in the mankai dorm air)

you then became a well known figure in the theatre community as “izumi’s best friend”

(you were not upset with that title at all, in fact, you hoped it never changed)

who knew you’d meet your best friend forever at a grocery store? over curry nonetheless?

(yes, you’re izumi’s best friend, but it doesn’t mean you’re exempt from the spices rant)

When you created your blog: A few weeks ago lolol. But I had one for a couple of years that I deleted for safety reasons last April, and it's fucking staggering how different it feels after spending so much time on twitter for the last few months. Plus I think social media has changed a lot with the pandemic. A lot of my friends and old followers are almost exclusively on Insta or Snap now, which are apps I'm just never gonna be into.

Last thing you googled: Fuck. Um. I'm gonna skip this one. (But it was for science, promise.)

Why I chose my URL: Just my morbid sense of humor. I'm still having some trouble looking in the mirror and joking helps me feel brave I guess.

Do you get asks: Not like I used to, or like I did when I attempted having a curiouscat blog. The ones I do get are from my friends, and they're ones my friends know for sure I'm not going to answer lolol.

How many people are you following: 94 rn.

How many followers do you have: Just 42 so far.

Average hours of sleep: Around six. I can't sleep too long bc I'm prone to bgl drops and waking up with one sucks. I take a midday nap to compensate if I can.

Instruments: None really. I played the flute for two years in middle school (*insert obvious gay joke here*) and can tap out a couple of pieces on the piano, but don't play either instrument well.

Currently wearing: Black sweats, a gray T-Shirt, and an ankle boot (they took off my cast early, yay!!!).

Favorite food: Damn, idk. All of them? I'm big into Mexican food bc I can adapt so many recipes for my diet--and bc I'm from California, probably. nicknames: I was called Bunny by my parents when I was little, and my mum called me ‘Usagi’ which just means bunny in Japanese, because she’s half Japanese and thought it was cool to give us all Japanese nicknames or something. I mostly go by Bunny online too!

zodiac: Aquarius. I only recently looked into my sign and apparently I’m spantaneous and creative, which I guess makes sense.

height: 5′5″. Kind of short. Not as short as yam, and definitely not as short as Sabrina either! I’m way shorter than my partner though; he’s 6 foot.

hogwarts house: Ravenclaw. Believe it or not, I’m actually pretty smart.

last thing I googled: ‘stuffed peppers recipe keto’ because I had a random pepper I needed to use and I’ve recently gone keto in an attempt to lose some weight and get that blood pressure down lmao

song stuck in my head: Honestly at the moment it’s ‘Say So’ by Doja Cat. I love everything she’s come out with recently.

number of followers: like 45??? which makes sense because I never post and I’m not really a Stardew blog anymore. I might change the name of this blog soon tbh.

rowan comes from a fairly opulent background : her parents never married — in fact , her father came out as gay when she was young — but both were quite successful on their own independent ventures and raised row in a very happy , yet slightly spoiled , childhood

her mother is a big - time magazine editor and had sole custody of rowan in their lush calabasas home , but rowan has always remained incredibly close with her father , a celebrity chef , and often spent weekends and holidays in his long beach penthouse apartment .

because of her wealthy lifestyle ( and having a chef for a father ) rowan was exposed to fine cuisine at a young age . she had incredibly mature tastebuds — even at the age of like 6 she was munching on calamari and truffle oil . she honestly can’t remember a time she ever turned her nose up at trying something new , her father having instilled a deep curiosity and passion for all foods in her .

alright , continuing on : when she was in her early teens , rowan started a food blog purely out of boredom and a general desire to share her passion for food . she started out by sharing low quality images of her meals and writing littles blurbs — nothing too fancy .

however , fast forward a couple years of ritualistic posting , her father discovered the blog one day and immediately shared it on his own social media ( because of course he had to brag about his little food connoisseur ) and row’s blog blew up from there . by the time she was 18 , rowan was getting paid to visit some nice ass restaurants around los angeles and write reviews on her blog , which was gaining interest with each post she wrote .

high school graduation came and went , and row’s online influence grew bigger and bigger , and continued to grow even as she attended the university of california to major in communications , which she envisioned would only serve to aid her in her online endeavours .

during her college career , rowan started up her youtube channel . it started as a couple videos that she linked in blog posts , prompted by questions from her followers about how she juggled her busy calendar , what her favourite recipes were , and more . her videos opened her up to an entirely new audience , and thus rowan blew up even more . she has since become a popular youtube star , her channel a collection of daily vlogs , cooking videos , restaurant reviews , and more .

my main inspo for rowan’s youtube aesthetic was alisha marie , our queen , with her casual daily vlogs and fun challenge videos , but with a mix of madelaine herself and laurdiy ( i imagine row as the foodie version of lauren ) , and those sort of vlog queens !

THINGS TO DO ON CRISTMAS!

Personally, Christmas is one of my favorite celebrations. Who does not love that time where everything smells like love and Christmas cookies? This blog will be tips like what colors are fashionable for the Christmas tree, recipes for Christmas cookies, Christmas movies, etc ... that will help you make Christmas a wonderful day.

1. Create decorations. For Christmas morning, you probably already have all your hanging lights and hanging ornaments, but you can always add them to the collection. I love that time we spent together with my mom, sister and I at the end of the whole decoration we were filled with glitter by The Christmas tree balls.

These are the colors that most attract my attention to put them in my Christmas tree:

Who does not love Christmas cookies does not have to be missing at our tables in this beautiful time.

Mom's best recipe

Gingerbread Christmas Cookie Trees

Bake Time: 8 to 10 minutes

Total Time: 2 hours

Servings: 2 dozen, 4 to 5 cookies per tree (depending on size)

Ingredients:

Gingerbread Cookies

3 cups all-purpose flour

¼ tsp baking soda

¼ tsp salt

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp ginger

¼ tsp nutmeg

¼ tsp cloves

6 Tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature

½ cup brown sugar

1/3 cup light corn syrup

1/4 cup molasses

1 to 2 Tbsp water

Royal Icing

2 cups confectioners’ sugar

1 ½ Tbsp meringue powder

3 Tbsp water, plus more to thin

1/2 Tbsp light corn syrup

¼ tsp vanilla extract or lemon juice (optional)

Directions:

Gingerbread Cookies

1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, salt and all of the spices together. Set aside.

2. In the bowl of a stand-mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix the butter and brown sugar until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the corn syrup and molasses and mix until combined.

3. With the mixer on low, add the dry ingredients in two additions. Mix until combined. If the dough seems dry, add in the water and mix until the dough comes together to form a ball.

4. Gather the dough and form into a disk. Wrap the disk in plastic and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

5. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature until it is soft enough to roll out (5 to 10 minutes). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or non-stick baking mats. Set aside.

Listen to Christmas songs. You might be sick of the repetitive music by the time Christmas day arrives but you have to get into the holiday spirit! You can turn on a playlist from your phone, laptop, T.V, speaker, etc..

A series where I recommend a book, review it, and create a short playlist to give a sense of what the book is about.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The first time I saw the cover of With the Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo I fell in love. I’ve been blogging about books for years and never has a cover actually made me do a double-take. What worried me, however, was if the story would match the beautiful cover. And oh, did it ever. The bright colours, lush illustrations of fruits, and the strong profile of a confident mixed woman more than reflected the quality of the story. Also, oh man, that Latinx representation! I am in LOVE with the representation! It wasn’t overwhelming, or just used as a plot device. This is the kind of book I’ve been waiting for. The Spanish dialogue was correct, the religion wasn’t used as a plot device, and Emoni’s heritage wasn’t used as a way to mark her as “different” from everyone else. She just was who she was. Thank you, Elizabeth Acevedo!

Emoni Santiago has a magic touch when it comes to cooking. Somehow, she always knows just what to add to a recipe to make it memorable and special enough to feel like magic. But being a single teen mom makes life more complicated for Emoni. Her daughter is her life, but she knows she needs to do something more than just provide for her. She wants to be a chef someday and for that to happen, Emoni needs to find the time to take the new culinary class in her high school. Through life lessons that teach her that she’s not as alone as she thinks (besides her abuela, who is a constant in her life), surprising new friendships, and cooking adventures she never expected, Emoni will learn that even though dreams may seem impossible, it’s worth the fight and the hope to want better for your life.

With the Fire On High has a special essence to it that immediately drew me in. Emoni is a single mother who has so many things against her. If someone were to look her way, they would think she wouldn’t succeed in life because of her circumstances. This could have easily become a story about the stereotypes following young mothers, but Acevedo instead introduces a story about a girl who has people rooting for her. I remember being particularly touched by a chapter where a teacher basically tells her that they know that she is capable of anything. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to believe in yourself in a situation like Emoni’s, but hearing someone you respect tell you that must have been incredibly powerful. How many women like Emoni never had someone believe in them the way this person believes in Emoni?

What drew me in even more into With the Fire On High were the short chapters. I personally find that shorter chapters tend to make the flow of a story better because it isn’t cluttered down by chapter fillers. It also made it easier for when I was reading on the go. I could pick the book up, read a two-page chapter, and continue on my way. The only downside to this is that there were instances where the story felt almost episodic--each chapter a different instance in Emoni’s life, especially at the end.

Emoni herself is a very complex character who always put her daughter first and acted her age while still maintaining that level of adulthood needed when someone else becomes dependent on you. I liked the fact that Emoni is understandably careful around the people she lets in, but doesn’t let the drama affect her relationship with her daughter. This was especially evident when Babygirl, her daughter’s nickname, and her father’s family came into the story.

Some of the side characters were also fun and I loved seeing the representation in this novel. Emoni’s best friend is a rock for her and I was grateful that I didn’t have to read another story about best friends who break up as a means of furthering the plot. What I also liked about the side characters is that some of them had some great character growth, while remaining true to their core being. For example, someone who is a bitch at the beginning didn’t magically become an angel just because the protagonist and her finally understand each other.

A lot happens in this book, which felt fun but also at times overwhelming. I could tell that Acevedo is a poet because though her novel is written in prose, the way that events are introduced and even the short chapters felt segmented like a poetic stanza. Everything adds up to a whole, but events are all grouped into different events within the story. This again reminds me of my earlier comment of this book sometimes feeling episodic.

One of my only other complaints about this book was how easily everything was concluded. I kept waiting for certain events to happen--to the point where my anxiety was starting to freak me out--because they were alluded to in the book, but they never happened. Everything just got tidied up really well and while the romantic in me is happy for Emoni and for the way everything concluded, I wish there had been a better arc for us getting to that conclusion.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this book. It was fun, heartfelt, and it was sweet watching Emoni become the woman she’s meant to be. Also, her relationship with her abuela and her daughter is the cutest thing ever. Plus, who wouldn’t want that piece of art of a cover on their bookshelf?
