sun:

sagittarius sun: sagittarius suns are optimistic, bright and cheerful; they’re the best friends you could ever have. these people are in constant motion and they always seek both mental and physical stimulation in their connections. they’re curious, funny and vigorous. these individuals tend to be good at sports, and it’s very common to see them doing some spontaneous philosophical ramblings. they are adventurers and travellers; they love to travel no matter if it’s somewhere far away or close. sagittarius can start doing things and never finish them, and can also be quite cocky for being know-it-alls.

cancer moon: cancer moons are seriously the sweetest. ever. but. they can also be very crazy. they’re intensely affected by what sign the moon is in right now. this is a very good sign to have the moon in because it’s in its rulership. the thing they do best is feeling emotions, and they’re very driven by them as well. they understand that people can be emotional at times and they just understand people in general. they know that sometimes all a person needs is just a little comfort and kindness, so out of the kindness of their heart, they provide it. their emotions are very strong, and their emotional or family world may make them cry a lot. they may look calm on they outside, but they’re actually falling apart on the inside. their emotions are really jumpy, they have a lot of mood swings and think they’re feeling a certain way when in reality they’re not. they jump to conclusions easily. their mother may have been very emotional even if she was nurturing or just crazy, she had heavy emotions and the individual felt them as if they were experiencing it first hand, or they just got really good at reading their moms emotions and moods so that they could understand her and protect themselves. they may find that over time they’re learning the importance of taking care of their emotions and healing. they need to learn to just go with their emotions instead of being overwhelmed by them, and this will not be easy. but this will help their intuition develop and their emotions will actually become very powerful and instead of fearing them, they can start to work with them to get what they want. they can manifest anything to be honest. they process their emotions by taking their feelings of empathy and kindness and then turn it onto the people they care most about. they will literally smother you with affection.

moon in 4th house: a good, secure, loving family is of utmost importance to you. if your domestic life is bad, your health responds worse than most people (and it usually effects every other area of your life). my mom has this, and she has a terrible time letting her children go out into the world, as much as she claims she doesn’t (she’s also a cancer moon which. whew). she is also resentful of any independence, or anything she considers ungratefulness for her love and protection. there’s an excessive worry about our well-being, and it’s quite suffocating and emotionally manipulative to live with that.

rising/1st house:

aries rising: their ability to (at least appear) unfazed, unbothered by any chaos going on around them. very resilient. so good at putting up with people lmao.

mercury:

sagittarius mercury: a refreshing wit and a depth that can convey understanding outside of yourself. you may also be able to learn many languages with ease. the way you speak in general is notable to foreigners and attention grabbing. your sense of humor and the jokes you tell may also hit off better with people from a different cultural background.

mercury in 9th house: natives with mercury in the 9th house have very brilliant ideas! they are always on the search for knowledge, and love traveling. they might’ve even been traveling since they were younger. when they can’t travel, they will read books/articles & such to learn about different cultures, languages, religions, and philosophies. they tell stories in very entertaining and interesting ways, it gets everyone’s attention just like that. if they have an opinion, you will hear it. these individuals will want to have evidence and facts before arguing or taking a stance, so it is a great placement to have. they can also be very blunt at times, to the point where others consider it “bold.” they can also be very witty, and flirty if they really want to be. Impatience is a big keyword for these people as they dread waiting for things + people. i’ve noticed these natives can be very consistent with what they do, or say. surprisingly, they can be very wise although funny at the same time. they’ve been through a lot of experiences that provide them with knowledge and advice + wisdom to give to others. these people like learning different languages, especially in songs and can easily memorize + learn different words and phrases. they’re very spiritually in tune, and receive messages from the universe easily. they make good teachers and astrologers. this placement can make a person laugh often. they are highly adaptable to different ideas, religions, and point of views. their minds can get stuck in the clouds a lot, just because there is so much to contemplate and think about in this world that interests them.

venus:

libra venus: thinking of your future the first days together, “i don’t wanna argue with you.”, making decisions together, lowkey co-dependent, “you’re like a dream.”, caring how others see your relationship, “let’s keep things fair”, “i wore this for you.”, monthly anniversaries.

venus in 7th house: likes to relate, feel the need to be in a commitment (marriage). they like to dedicate themselves to relationships. they can attract someone beautiful and recognizable. express love and romance. loves to make deals. they seek balance in life. wants to please their partner. it may indicate an improvement in material life after marriage. the big question of life involves partnerships, if the relationship (marriage, society) is disturbed it is affected. it has many partners and mediators. they like peace and love. seeks to make the other happy. attracts pleasure and fun.

mars:

scorpio mars: this is where the devil comes to play. with a scorpio mars person. from romantic connections, to friends, to their professional life, things for a scorpio mars are just about looking at everything through a deep/occult lens. doesn't necessarily actually devilish or dark or whatever, but just that it merely goes beyond what's simple. and what's fun is that they play it cool. but i'll tell you now - be careful not to get trapped into the wicked ways of a scorpio mars, they're good at what they do. that is - their intuitive aura towards you if they see you in a romantic way, their sex, their calm yet powerful energy, and being quite possessive. these may all seem enticing to one who likes an attractive vibe like theirs. but... it can be toxic. and that's all I'll say. besides the romantic side of things, the way these people move is the most interesting way of all the zodiac signs. they seem like they're not trying to be seen, and that could be what they aim for, but something about them and the way they move tends to make people want to get drawn in to them. it doesn't have to be in a romantic/sexual way. but even just working, or physically training, or in family/friendly territory; their energy is subtle one, but touches people. it just happens. don't ask how cause i don't know either.

mars in 8th house: you both crave and fear intimacy. on one hand, you might be hypersexual and very assertive about your wants and needs; on the other hand, you fear letting anyone close to you for fear of them ending up betraying you. paranoias about being cheated on by your partner; you might hold on too much and too tight to people, needing to learn to let go of that need to control the ones you love. fear of opening up and being vulnerable, yet you wouldn’t stand others acting like that towards you. sexually magnetic. you seek intense manifestation and answers to your many questions about the dark side of life, unresolved traumas, the workings of the universe, etc. transformation occurs when you conquer your paranoias and fear of losing control, and it’s through that manifestation that your energy runs at its highest. moving on might prove to be very difficult when you’ve learned to identify with that part of your life as a part of your character. this placement focuses a lot on acting out your self-expression, which was something you didn’t get to do when you were younger.

Owl House Face Reveals and Why They Work

I'm so behind on my Huntlow week contribution but I have to exorcise these bees from my brain.

One thing I have noticed that The Owl House does really well are face reveals. Each time we've had them they have been genuinely unexpected and interesting. Now, face reveals are nothing new in media, and in many genres within the speculative fiction box they kind of have their own language and preset expectations depending on the assumed archetype of a character.

Growing up in the 90's, this was quite consistent (particularly with anime). When a Cool, Masked Character or Villain shows up, there's usually an instant of the mask getting revealed in a moment of vulnerability that shows us what the character looks like--but in a wide variety of these reveals...the conclusion is often along the lines of:

Protag: Oh. They're a lot cuter than I was expecting!

There's often a little romantic subtext here too, but not always.

And for all the benefits (and true banes) of anime-type character design, it was/is very common for the resultant revealed face to be conventionally attractive (or drawn to be perceived that way). I know that this is a sort of gentle pushback to the historical VILLAIN=UGLY trope that is nowhere near as prevalent as it used to be, but after thirty years of prettyface mask reveals, it ended up paving the way for strong, sleeping expectation of mask=pretty underneath instead.

And as a result, we're not taking away much more information that what was already expected (re: masked character not so bad) when the character showed up masked to begin with.

Now, this isn't always bad. But in the case of a face reveal, it's supposed to be a moment that establishes really important visual information quickly--and if it's doubled with the "masked character is unconscious/injured" there's a good chance they wouldn't normally let our hero get that close to begin with. The point is, the scene has heavy lifting to do!

Which brings me to our first big face reveal in Owl House, Hunter.

So at this point, the Golden Guard has made his debut--he's been set up as a "genius teen prodigy". This is loaded language that anyone who grew up watching anime instantly understands. Even if you don't though, the way Lilith talks about him sets him up for this expectation well. In this scene, he shows up as a cocky little asshole with a lot of bravado but also, importantly, some key visual indicactors of power. He's got a staff in his right hand, a cage in the other, and is wearing heavy armor and of course the mask. He shows up in a fifty foot fist made of boiling salt water.

Without showing us his face, the show has already laid a pretty strong, unconscious foundation for what the audience is going to see under there! So when we get our classic moment:

This scene moves so much VERY quickly.

First, the Golden Guard's face doesn't resemble the archetypal expectation the audience might have had based on what had been set up. If anything, we're getting a lot of traits all at once we're not used to on a sympathetically portrayed character (more on this in a second). They also wisely destroy any possible interpretation of romantic subtext by giving us a sibling slapfight immediately. But the biggest takeaway from this quick scene visually is the fact the Golden Guard here very young, about Luz's age, maybe a little older--a detail highlighted by our hero herself--and VERY vulnerable. Very murderable. See how his torso (heart) is twisted up, head is tipped back and the eyebrows are scrunched up? Makes him quite a bit "smaller" looking even though he's quite tall compared to the other kids.

But what does this do for visual understanding of a scene? When expectations are subverted, the viewer in a way is able to absorb the visual information with new eyes. When a mask reveal shows us something actually surprising, it actually allows us to absorb the visual details without sorting them into an archetype. So what do we see? Who is the Golden Guard without his mask, his armor, or the trappings of his power?

Well...he has a lot of traits classically associated with unsympathetic characters, to start! He has dark heavy brows, reddish eyes in an ashy face, an aquiline nose and a big ol' gap in his teeth. He's got a ragged ear. Now lately, eye bags and facial scars have come into vogue for heroes, but not usually in combination with all of those other traits (if it was just the scar or even the ear, it wouldn't have told us much). And even here, they're startling because no other character in the show displays eye bags or prominent scarring--not even the mercenaries or adults. He's also fabulously expressive and earnest regardless of emotion, which takes the edge off any potential ability to intimidate (and we know he's about as intimidating as a kale salad as shown when he tries to order the Coven Scouts around at the precinct).

At this point, now that whatever preconceived vision of the mysterious Golden Guard has been blown out of the water, we're able to absorb what each individual character design choice is actually telling us.

This is one busted-ass teenager.

The eyebags show he's exhausted/stressed. The facial scar is a brutal fucking injury and the kind of thing that you get when someone is deliberately trying to hurt you (in combat or...well. what's implied to later be the actual reason). The ripped ear highlights the idea he's seen a lot of combat. The gap teeth highlight the childish imperfection and youth.

One of the things that struck me most about watching this for the first time and watching other reaction videos (a lot of them of different ages and demographics to get a decent sample size) was the incredible consistency of the response to all this visual information! Almost every single one of them were some variant or combination of these two thoughts: "Oh no, he's so young, poor thing! Is he okay?" And even better--the audience understands the answer to that question the minute they ask it, even before the conclusion of the episode. No, he is certainly not! This brainwashed child is in a lot of physical and emotional danger!

Which is GREAT! That's clearly what the intent was. An given how much of a little shithead he was in his first appearances, it was really amazing to see how thoroughly he was able to go from that to instantly sympathetic--as well as visually very interesting.

The Owl House demonstrates a lot of mastery over animation and writing techniques/tropes. You could fill a book on the topic (please oh please let there be an art book at the end please please please). But I REALLY loved how they handled face reveals especially, and to date this one in particular is probably my favorite.

I know how much we all love to choose beloved characters that represent ourselves, whether its for personal or roleplay reasons, so I think it's time we expand this trend even further. I thought why not shake things up and combine this side of tumblr with my favorite form of self-insert...

Astrology!!

you know y'all want to. So what are your Big Three signs represented by animated characters?? I will start with mine:

☀️ SUN: Aries ♈️ 🐏

I know it's a bit on the nose, but I can't think of anyone more like the Ram than Merida. Stubborn, impulsive, firey, playful, passionate... it's all her baby. Even has the red-ass wildwoman hair. For me, she is most like how I behave on the surface, especially when I'm having a good time. She loves fiercely, plays recklessly, and isn't afraid of a bit of danger in the pursuit of living fully. Everything about her is loud, proud, and in your face- and just like the sun, you can't tone her down even for a second. Especially when she's angry. But that anger is a good thing too- it reminds us to stand up for ourselves, for the injustices we see, and to fight wholeheartedly for what's right. She shows us that our emotions are our greatest allies, and if you befriend them, they will help guide you towards your truest path. All this boldness and authenticity allows her to be a truly fearless leader, and one who isn't afraid of breaking traditions to do so.

🌙 MOON: Virgo ♍️🏺

Helga, for me, is the epitome of my Moon sign. She's no-nonsense, likes things to be efficient and effective, and is constantly scanning for problems to fix. She can also be intimidatingly scary and judgmental when she's pushed into a corner, and then all of those analytical skills can easily turn into weapons of mass destruction. But the more healed way it usually manifests for me is through her tough-love Mommy energy. She has a "right way" in mind, and knows what works and what doesn't. It's not that she's trying to be cruel, or too abrasive, but she sees when someone needs that push and won't hesitate to give them it. She's often the best person for advice if you don't mind being torn to shreds in the process lol.

↗️ RISING: Cancer ♋️ 🦀

Now if you were scared at all by the hard-headedness of my first two signs- fear not! My rising sign is here to make me less of a dick lol. Might be a controversial choice, but Genie is definitely a cancer rising. "You've never had a friend like me" is sort of an inside joke of mine, and it's because I truly seek to be the most authentic and loyal friend you've ever had. I'm not just here for a good time- I'm here to change your life! Emotional intimacy is the hallmark of this goal, and I love to really "see" someone, to bear witness to all their ugly and do away with the surface barriers society imposes upon us. I know how crushingly lonely it can be to feel like no one really understands you, or even tries to, and so my bleeding heart takes up arms against this strongly. The way Genie bends over backwards and selflessly grants wishes- even ones he didn't have to- and genuinely wants the best for Aladdin despite the sacrifices it costs him, is the heart and soul of what this sign is for me. Not that this is always a good thing- I've definitely given away way too much without proper boundaries and gotten burned by it- but the way I feel for someone's situation, and want to do everything in my power to make it all better for them, is what Genie and I have in common. The shackles around him often feel how this type of empathy feels too- knowing you care so much and so deeply about someone, trying your best to "poof" their problems away, but having to free yourself from helping them or else it will drag you down as well. It's a big lesson this sign often has to learn the hard way, and boy have I learned it. But still, when it's used correctly and for the right person- nothing feels better than knowing you helped someone feel a lot less alone in this crazy world, and made a positive impact on their soul.
