AU: Bellarke share a long hug (and maybe a "platonic" kiss or two) before Bellamy leaves Arkadia for a supply run. It's only a day trip, but they always miss each other every time they are apart.

Working on researching more obscure non-Attic Ancient Greek religion be like:
Me: Which deity was worshipped most in this region
Google: a Goddess who was not named but used this title, Despoine, in the mystery tradition, later conflated with these other goddesses from these other mysteries
Me: Yeh but who was the original goddess, before the conflations
Google: Bitch I just said it was a mystery didn't I?

I just finished writing Chapter 10 for Arkadia and my emotions are in shambles 😅 if anyone on here has read/is reading the story, we’re only on Chapter 6 so there plenty of story ahead! I’m hoping for 16 chapters total and trying to post a chapter a week! But man…this story, this ship that is Clexa has a direct line to my emotions.
I love Clexa and this story of Arkadia for them. Every week I’m writing for this story with a smile on my face and it’s all I can think about. There is so much love and so much heartbreak in this but it is so worth it in the end. Writing this story for Clexa has breathed new life into me and my passion for fanfiction. This is the one, this story is that one passion project for me that I’ve been searching for in 12 years of being involved in fanfiction, where I would be content if I never wrote anything again. Arkadia is my way of helping to immortalize Clexa with all other members of the fandom, to show how no matter what, Clarke and Lexa will always find each other and always be in love.
If you’re reading this story, thank you so much. It means the absolute world to me. Clexa helped change my life 8 years ago, this story is for them and the fandom. And personally for me. Without Fantascape, there wouldn’t be Arkadia and to always have this story no matter the ship, it means the world to me as well. Thank you so much and please enjoy the story of Arkadia for Clexa, always enjoy Clexa, and never forget Clexa 💚💙
EDIT: Ah I probably should have mentioned as well that Arkadia is pinned on my profile! And I post links to every chapter as soon as I update, thank you again and always! 💚💙

Zeus Lykaios
Tumblr media
In the heart of ancient Arkadia, atop Mt Lykaion, was an enormous ash altar dedicated to the prehistoric sky-god form of Zeus. In effigies discovered in excavations of the ashen mound, he is referred to by his oldest epithet, Zeus Semios, the Giver of Signs, among others; Zeus Ombrios, the Showery; Zeus Lykaios, interpreted alternately as both Zeus the Wolf-like and Zeus the Light. This site was three-layered: the top of the mountain was devoted to burnt offerings; the second, about halfway down the mountain, was the larger sanctuary that attracted the most visitors. It is assumed that this first sanctuary was what the majority of traveling worshippers came to see and leave offerings at the second altar. This was devoted to rites of thanksgiving, praying, and leaving smaller personal offerings that would not be taken to the mountaintop. Halfway between the two sanctuaries was a fountain, a spring of freshwater where Pausanias recorded witnessing priests coming together to officiate a ritual to entreat Zeus into letting down rain.
Offerings:
Most of the people coming to this specific sanctuary in Arkadia were farmers from the surrounding land. Their requests were most often recorded as prayers for rain and plentiful harvests. They offered many things, including livestock to be sacrificed and their bones burnt on the peak altar, but this was not the norm. Many household objects have been unearthed, but here are some notable surviving offerings to Zeus:
Philai (small libation bowls)
Skyphoi (a deep wine bowl with two handles and a stand)
Terracotta lamps
Iron knives
Bronze rings
Iron keys
Terracotta figurine of a small bird
Coins
Miniature bronze tripod cauldrons
depictions of Zeus
In modern reconstruction, offerings of jewelry, pottery, statues, coins, and figurines are historically attested.

If you can crank up your fortitude to withstand sweltering heat in the desert, or murder snow in the north.
then you can crank it up to withstand a stew pot.
Ohu is absolutely enjoying herself. and stealing all the spuds. much to the quaggawumps’ collective chagrin.

A bit of info on Despoina a Goddess in Arcadia, Greece
A third original Arcadian deity, Despoina, the "Mistress," certainly had a pan-Arcadian audience. "There is no deity that the Arcadians venerate more than this Despoina" writes Pausanias (8.37.9). Since we know that the cult at Lykosoura was the only one she received in Arcadia, we must infer that this city's sanctuary was honored by all the Arcadians. When they refused to move to populate Megalopolis, the inhabitants of Lykosoura were forgiven for this by the Arcadians, not only because of the sanctuary's right of asylum, but also because the cult it housed was known to all the Arcadians and its reputation surpassed that of the city of Lykosoura itself.
Furthermore, when he describes the sanctuary, Pausanias does not make reference to the inhabitants of Lykosoura in the way in which he usually records local practices and traditions, but rather just to the "Arcadians." It is the Arcadians who "bring to the sanctuary the produce of their cultivated trees" (8.37.7) and "who celebrate rites of initiation and sacrifice to Despoina" (8.37.8), and "the legend of Anytos is Arcadian" (8.37.6). It should also be noted that the grandeur of the sanctuary's architectural program and the presence in it of a monumental cult-statue group sculpted by Damophon of Messene are out of all proportion to the modest importance of Lykosoura alone. We must accept the probability that Despoina's sanctuary was a pan-Arcadian one.
The deity worshiped, Despoina, was the daughter of Demeter, like Kore, and Eleusinian symbols can be seen in the attributes that the goddess' cult statue held (8.37.4), the torch and the box (kiste), but the goddess' personality was very differ-ent. By her side in the cult group was not just Demeter: Anytos, a strictly Arcadian character, foster-father of Despoina and armed propolos of Demeter, was there too, as was the wild Artemis. The presence of this last goddess, presented as another daughter of Demeter, is to be explained by the affinities she shares with Despoina.
Both goddesses are connected with the animal world. In the Lykosoura cult group Artemis was represented as a huntress. As to Despoina, her relationship with the animal world must have been revealed in the course of the mysteries. A series of votive terracotta figurines found in the Megaron represents standing figures, dressed in cloaks (himatia), the heads of which are those of rams or cows. They carry baskets on their heads. These figurines are usually interpreted as representations of devotees undertaking the role of sacred basket-carrier (kanephoria) in a procession during which they wore animal masks.

Chapter 10 is here, and it is probably to date one of the hardest chapters I’ve ever had to write. Read, enjoy, stay tuned…Clarke and Lexa will always find a way back to each other 💚💙

Hi! I see that you are an Arkadian reconstructionist- do you have any resources (even posts would be ok) that you recommend for more research on Arkadian religion and customs?
Hey anon! I'm sorry it's been so long to answer this ask, but I do have some resources for you.
I have one more post about it here where I talk a little bit about the calendar and the festival of Tripanagoris, but they are by no means completely comprehensive. Here are some more resources that I rely on: Placing Arcadia from Medieval to Renaissance by Nandini Das; this is a good read to place the imagined Arkadian pastoral paradise in its ancient and medieval context Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project (Part One) by David Gilman Romano & Mary Voyatzis; this is the material culture record from the excavation of the upper sanctuary dedicated to Zeus Lykaios. In the Land of Giants by Catherine Connors; this one I haven't gotten around to reading yet but have it on my list. It analyzes areas of southern Magna Grecia and Arkadia in their myths of being home to monsters or non-human creatures.
