OMG!!!!A FELLOW MARIKA LOVER!!!!!
I needed someone to ramble about Marika for so long. Bruh she's like one of the best female characters I've seen in a while
But when I first got into the fandom, it's like people are VERY bad towards Marika and what they said about her is how she's *insert a crazy amount of slurs offensive towards a woman*
She's very prominent to the story and they thought she was responsible for everything, stay with me on this. I understand she's responsible MAJORLY, but not ENTIRELY
They have a whole cast of characters and they decided to hate on one woman for idk all the bad things? It's like blaming the rock because someone throws it at you
Hello, hello!
She is! I didn't like her that much at first, but then I looked a bit more into her lore and later actions and she got me. Very complex and honestly just a really fun character to think about! And write! Oh, I love writing her.
I think I missed the blatant hate, but it doesn't surprise me. Those folks are just an insta block for me anyway, so even if I saw them, I have forgotten them :P. I did got the one dimensional takes on her though, but those are generally chill or used to make jokes.
She is basically fully responsible for like 70-80% of the story before the Shattering, but yeah, after (and sometime before) it you have so many other forces making plays while she's straight up crucified.
But I do get the hate, tbh? What I don't get is why folks needed/need to vocalise it. Basic fandom etiquette, we don't tag hate on character's tags. Back on the hate, she did conquered half a continent and put in power an bigoted theocracy, she did enslave a whole species (trolls) and she did commit genocide fucking twice (fire giants & ancient dragons). Like, I get why folks might hate her, especially with the whole genocide thing. She's undeniable a villain in this story.
I just think she's more than that. Cause she did all that, right? She destroyed so much and build as much. But when Godwyn and Ranni "die", she goes and tears it all down. Like, can you imagine? Literal eons upon eons of killing, burning and then building and creating over the ashes and corpses. And she throws literally everything away in grief. This is the main thing that I love about her. She is this cruel and ruthless Goddess, but she gradually loves her kids. I honestly think that the beginning of her plotting against the Greater Will was when she was forced to toss her Omen kids in the sewers. Is she hard on them? Yeah. They are demigods and they have so much shit to deal with just by being that. But she loves them in her own way.
Am I mixing headcanon with canon? Probably, yeah. But I don't care. I don't generally like villains, Imma keep the one I do close and if I have to ignore canon to do so, I will.
Also I'm sorry, I'm very tired (it's long past this "old" hag's bedtime :P). I hope this is understandable in some way. But yay! Marika love! <3

i’ve pushed myself to read more sapphic literature this year, so here are some of my favs:
mistakes were made by meryl wilsner - spicy! age gap! secret relationship! this was one of the best books i read this year, i devoured it in just a few days. delicious smuttiness
sorry, bro by taleen voskuni - bi girls in love <3 super fun, lighthearted read with beautiful armenian representation.
we do what we do in the dark by michelle hart - this one is a lot heavier and, ahem, darker. another age gap and some angst but there’s a happy ending!
when katie met cassidy by camille perri - this one is about first-time sapphic revelations which i loved, really easy to read too.
one last stop by casey mcquiston - if you look past the occasional cringy millennial quip, this book is so fun and heartwarming. kinda sci-fi too?
honorable mention for the priory of the orange tree by samantha shannon - not strictly dedicated to a sapphic love story (it’s a giant fantasy novel first), but so worth a read. one of the queen’s handmaidens is an undercover sorceress sent to protect her and they fall in loooove.

Your comics are cool. Have you seen the dog spirit aralez? I think you would like it. It’s an old Armenian myth. I grew up hearing stories about them and ara mountain. They’re spirits that take the shape of winged dogs, descending onto the battlefield to revive fallen and injured soldiers by licking their faces.
They appear in the story of ara the beautiful. The story of ara the beautiful goes like this. Well, there’s tons of different versions, but I was raised with this one.
Ara the beautiful was an Armenian king, who was prettier than all others. The queen shamiram fell in love with him, but he refused her advances. In retaliation, she rallied her troops against Armenia. She won the battle, but ara died in battle. Shamiram was devastated. Shamiram brought ara up the mountain (later named ara’s mountain) for him to be revived by the aralez, but they never came. But shamiram didn’t want any more war with Armenia, and knew they’d want to avenge their leader. So she disguised her lover as ara, and told the Armenians that he’d been brought back to life, avoiding the war.
Something about the story reminds me of your comics. In a good way. The tragedy of ara dying for the simple reason that he didn’t love shamiram. The tragedy of shamiram accidentally causing the death of the one person she wanted alive. The tragedy of the spirits choosing not to come. The ending, which is bittersweet: a war is avoided, through deception. Or maybe it’s just something about flying dogs. Whatever it is, it’s wonderful, and reminds me of your art.I hope you have a wonderful day.
I've never heard of this story and I like it a lot, thank you for sharing it. I have some old stories lined up for we go together, but I might do some research into this and draw it sometime in the future! I'm really flattered you think something this interesting has the same vibe as my stuff
I hope you have a good day too!!

Okay so!! Here's a little wap design compilation - not exhaustive, both because of the image limit and because there's many things I'm not settled on but I want to post some of it at least~
Organised by families because familial resemblence or lack thereof is one of my favourite factors in chardes! And because Tolstoy is so good at creating these family dynamics of shared traits! First, the Bolkonskys:
Tumblr media
Lise, Mlle Bourienne and Nikolai jr. not included for now, maybe later. The shared traits I gave them all (therefore presumably coming from Nikolai's side) are sharp, angular features with a beaked nose and high cheekbones, thin figures and straight, dark hair. Both Andrei and Nikolai are described as short, so initially I wanted to apply this to them all, but then I thought it would be cool to emphasise Andrei's similarity to his father AND separate Marya out by making her much taller than them. It works really well because Andrei and Nikolai are both short yet straightened out to their full height while Marya cowers and hunches to hide hers - which also works to create the unattractive figure she's described as having. I use heads to note height - as in, how many heads tall a character is - mostly because numerous manga art tutorials ingrained those in me <:3c Nikolai has his signature bushy eyebrows, and his clothes and hair are inspired by his depiction in the first soviet wap movie because I really liked it!
In general I spent the most time on Andrei, both because he's my favourite and because he has a lot of tantalisingly sparse and at times interestingly contrasting descriptions - he's meant to look unassuming, his small and slender figure hiding his impressive stamina and his cushy administrative position contrasting with the rugged hussars (and his small hands are mentioned as well) but he has sharp features, and his design should showcase his proud, decisive nature as well.
Tumblr media
The Rostovs! Not including the count and countess because while I have some features in mind I haven't made up my mind yet on the overall designs, and excluding Vera for reasons I'll divulge later. These Rostov kids are all energetic, emotionally driven and strong-willed and I wanted to reflect that in their designs - most of all in their hair, which is curly and kind of fluffy, making big, untamed shapes - I decided this they would have inherited from the Count. They're all rather short (I think some of the Rostovs are described as short so I extended it to the whole family) and a little stockier than the Bolkonskys - Natasha's figure is really incosistent because she gains and loses weight a lot over the book, but I settled on the slightly heavier side mostly to contrast with Sonya. I also love freckles and always associate them with energy and youthfulness so they got given to the Rostovs - presumably from the Count's side again. And their eyes and hair are all black or dark brown!
BIG RAMBLING RANT: The Countess is described as having "oriental features" and I wanted to incorporate that into the kids because it's like the most detail we ever get on someone's overall facial features lol but it turned out kind of frustratingly vague. I think my first idea was towards Georgia because Pierre mentions a woman with Georgian features in 1812, and because my ballets russes research included a very orientalist ballet about a georgian queen. I didn't find very good references though and turned next to Armenia, and when I found someone talking about common Armenian features that fit what I already had in mind for the Rostovs I ended up using that. However, later I realised those countries are in Western Asia and don't really fit the descriptor of "oriental (eastern)" from the perspective of Russia... Now I'm looking more towards the Kalmyk and Bashkir people after seeing them mentioned in one of my interlibrary books so I might revise the Rostovs yet. I did get kind of attached to the nose though so I'll do my best to keep it haha
Tumblr media
The odd ones out in the Rostov household!! Sonya is, I believe, related to the Rostovs on the Count's side so maybe it would make sense to give her the fluffy hair and freckles, but she has enough descriptions in the book to form a separate design on her own (and she's only a second cousin to the Rostov kids, so it's pretty far away anyway). She's compared to a graceful kitten, described as almost unattractively thin and with a sallow skin, so I thought it would fit her to have a slightly unwell air, with portruding collarbones and a slight hunch. She also has her dark double braid.
Vera was fun once I got the idea to make her look very different from her siblings - to mirror her personality being completely different (cool, impassionate, meanspirited at times) and to visually reflect how she's disliked by the Countess - perhaps almost looking like she's not her parents' child 👀 She's taller and slimmer than her siblings, with straighter and lighter in colour hair, and her features are more smooth and soft. No freckles either.
Tumblr media
The Kuragins! Those guys are fun. I have Anatole as the tallest in the cast (save for Pierre), and Helene as the tallest woman, with Ippolit the same height as her. Helene and Ippolit in general are described as having the same features so they ended up almost looking like twins! Later I'll talk a bit more about their facial features and hair but in terms of silhouettes, Helene has to have her round shoulders and impressive bosom (and low neckline), while Anatole has to look all broad-shouldered and masculine. He was actually the hardest to draw because I kept feeling like his head was too small and his whole body too long... I might go back and make him a bit broader still. A book I have says the elite life guards of the Russian army were known for their impressive, immaculate appearance, with some men padding their uniforms to add volume to their chest... That made me think of Anatole lmao.
Tumblr media
A little roll call to show everyone's height in relation to each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More about the Kuragins! I tackled Helene with the aim to make her beautiful by the standards of the time, and luckily there's actually an 1812 bust of the Greek Helene! It was too poerfect of a coincidence so I leaned heavily into it. I find that typical features of ancient Greek or 19th century Hellenistic busts are a very straight nose that flows smoothly from the forehead, a very round jawline with a somewhat portruding chin and that particular curve of the neck. I gave Helene all of those along with heavily-lidded, downturned eyes and an expression that hopefully conveys calm confidence and intelligence. Ippolit is supposed to have the same features but made to look ugly by his stupid expression - this actually turned out easier than I thought? Though it might just be that the moustache looks kind of stupid - maybe I should try a version without it. Anatole I thought ought to look impressive and masculine so in the end I kept the squarer jaw and strong forehead (and I couldn't resist the slicked back hair) but I considered a more Hellenistic version too, with the short curls and round jaw. Helene's hair was tricky because none of the styles I saw felt quite right - I settled on a sort of combo of the Hellenistic curls from the statue but a bit looser with the braid she's described to have in the book. She'd also probably wear a lot of hair accessories but I'll have to do more research on those.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More Natasha and Sonya, and Andrei - Andrei is so difficult!! I always kind of oscillate between "stern, strong-willed soldier", "sharp-featured intellectual" and "soft pampered prince/troubled poet" (where I try and fail to imitate this gorgeous illustration by Vadimir Serov). The Brutus haircut is tempting in its historical accuracy, but I'm just a little bit too fond of the immaculately slicked back hair...
Edit: I completely forgot @visualnoteslibrary was on Tumblr!! Thank you so much for collecting all the descriptions, you spared me quite the Easter egg hunt through the Gutenberg version <3

excerpts from lord byron’s letters that read like tumblr posts from the 1800s
(diary version: https://www.tumblr.com/burningvelvet/708562718092836864/random-excerpts-from-lord-byrons-diaries-that)
“We of the craft (poets) are all crazy. Some are affected by gaiety, others by melancholy, but all are more or less touched.”
“Remember me to yourself when drunk. I am not worth a sober thought.”
“Why I came here, I know not; where I shall go, it is useless to inquire. In the midst of myriads of the living & the dead worlds — stars, systems, infinity — why should I be anxious about an atom?”
“I only go out to get me a fresh appetite for being alone.”
“I have imbibed such a love for money that I keep some sequins in a drawer to count, and cry over them once a week.”
“I do not believe in any religion. I will have nothing to do with immortality. We are miserable enough in this life without speculating upon another.”
“Venice and I agree very well - in the mornings I study Armenian, and in the evenings I go out sometimes - and indulge in coition always.”
“The great object of life is sensation — to feel that we exist, even though in pain. It is this ‘craving void’ which drives us to gaming — to battle — to travel — to intemperate but keenly felt pursuits of every description, whose principal attraction is the agitation inseparable from their accomplishment.”
“If I could always read I should never feel the want of company.”
“When I am ill or unlucky I philosophize as well as I can.”
“Cant is so much stronger than cunt.”
"I have such a detestation of cant ... that I make myself appear rather worse than better than I am."
“There is something pagan in me that I cannot shake off. In short, I deny nothing, but doubt everything.”
“Letter writing is the only device combining solitude with good company.”
“I can never get people to understand that poetry is the expression of excited passion, and that there is no such thing as a life of passion any more than a continuous earthquake or an eternal fever. Besides, who would ever shave themselves in such a state?”
“Why should Queens not be whores? every Whore is a Quean.” [Context: 1. Queen Caroline was being tried for adultery 2. “Quean” was another word for “prostitute”]
“But what is Hope? Nothing but the paint on the face of Existence; the least touch of truth rubs it off, and then we see what a hollow-cheeked harlot we have got hold of.”
“To be perfectly original one should think much and read little, and this is impossible, for one must have read before one has learnt to think.”
“I doubt sometimes whether a quiet and unagitated life would have suited me - yet I sometimes long for it.”
“I think the worst woman that ever existed would have made a man of very passable reputation. They are all better than us, and their faults such as they are must originate with ourselves.”
“I should, many a good day, have blown my brains out, but for the recollection that it would have given pleasure to my mother-in-law.”
“Hate is by far the greatest pleasure; men love in haste, but detest in leisure.”
“Like other parties of the kind, it was first silent, then talky, then argumentative, then disputatious, then unintelligible, then altogethery, then inarticulate, and then drunk.”
“In the last two years I have been at Venice, I have spent about five thousand pounds, and I need not have spent a third of this, had it not been that I have a passion for women which is expensive in its variety every where, but less so in Venice than in other cities.”
“I am so changeable, being everything by turns and nothing long, – I am such a strange mélange of good and evil, that it would be difficult to describe me.”
[on a lover, Margarita Cogni] “I forgot to mention that she was very devout, and would cross herself if she heard the prayer-time strike — sometimes when that ceremony did not appear to be much in unison with what she was then about.”
[on his future wife] “I am quite irresolute — and undecided — if I were sure of myself (not of her) I would go — but I am not — & never can be — and what is still worse I have no judgement — & less common sense than an infant — this is not affected humility…”
“I was the fashion when she first came out; I had the character of being a great rake, and was a great dandy — both of which young ladies like. She married me from vanity, and the hope of reforming and fixing me.”
“I read ‘Glenarvon,’ too, by Caro Lamb — God damn!”
"I have seen three men's heads and a child's foreskin cut off in Italy.”
“What could I do? – a foolish girl – in spite of all I could say or do – would come after me... I could not exactly play the Stoic with a woman who had scrambled 800 miles to unphilosophize me.”
“I have fallen in love, which, next to falling into the canal (which would be of no use, as I can swim), is the best or the worst thing I could do.”
(on the possibility of spies being sent for him during the Greek Revolution) “If these Gentlemen have any undue interest and discover my weak side — viz — a propensity to be governed — and were to set a pretty woman or a clever woman about me — with a turn for political or any other sort of intrigue — why — they would make a fool of me — no very difficult matter probably even without such an intervention. But if I can keep passion — at least that passion — out of the question (which may be the more easy as I left my heart in Italy) they will not weather me with quite so much facility.”
[on a Venetian lover, Marianna Segatti] “I am sure if I put a poniard into the hand of this one, she would plunge it where I told her, — and into me, if I offended her. I like this kind of animal, and am sure that I should have preferred Medea to any woman that ever breathed.”
[in response to a fan letter] “You tell me that you wished to know me better, because you liked my writing. I think you must be aware that a writer is in general very different from his productions, and always disappoints those who expect to find in him qualities more agreeable than those of others; I shall certainly not be lessened in my vanity, as a scribbler, by the reflection that a work of mine has given you pleasure; and, to preserve the impression in its favour, I will not risk your good opinion, by inflicting my acquaintance upon you.”

I am fully aware that a lot of the characters already have canon ethnicities of their own, so I'd just like to say that these "headcanons" are just for fun, and most of them don't really have all that much thought put into them, so don't be confused if you see something you find nonsensical.

-🍁St. Sargis or Surb Sargis is an old Armenian Holiday that feels similar to the idea of Valentine's day. St. Sargis himself is the patron saint of love and youth familiar to St Valentine himself, but there is one part of this holiday that sticks out. During the feast you eat an aghablit, which is a salty biscuit/bread. The saltiness of this bread makes one very thirsty, but you are not to drink water, for it is said in your dreams that night, you will be visited by your future lover bringing you water. Though many deities become sanctified under Christianity, the exitance of these saints gives us a peak into pagan history and rituals! Water itself being a part of worship and stories is one interesting part. Salt is also very significant in rituals, and woman shaped salt vessels (Like the one on the table I added) Have been found in Armenia since the bronze ages. Salt has a recurring part in Armenian fairytales, sanctifying rituals, and daily life Anywho! Here is a little St.Sargis illustration with Nareh, invited by the King Dilijan and Queen Garoun of Dilijan🍁-

Today, on 22nd December, 1977 - Queen Story!
Inglewood, CA, USA, The Forum
'News Of The World Tour'
"I sat across from Freddie Mercury and enjoyed studying his face. With his narrow eyes, high cheek bones and prominent front teeth, he looked very much like many young men in my Persian audience at Kolbeh and Andre’s. I also performed at several Armenian supper clubs: Michael’s, Haji Baba’s and Sayat Nova. Like many belly dancers, I had picked up small talk in the languages of the people with whom I worked so I initiated Persian small talk with Freddie. Impressed, he told me that although born in Zanzibar to Persian parents, he grew up in London and didn’t speak Farsi fluently (good thing since neither did I!) Freddie asked if I’d be interested in performing with Queen the next evening (the last show of a long tour) during the encore. As it was almost Christmas, they were planning to have several characters (dancing reindeer and gingerbread-men, Santa, etc.) and I’d fit right in! I extended the opportunity to Jane and Denise, of my dance team from the dinner party, who were happily available"

RARE THEORY : WHY AND HOW THETA WILL BE THE 9TH QUEEN OF KAKIN
Yo I already talk about this in some comments. But I really wanted to make an official post of that theory here in my blog.
So there is this genius @itsmyara and @hunterexamcheatsheet who talk about the fact that each actual queen of Kakin's name are related to their position in the harem hierarchy :
Tumblr media
Then we have Theta, Theta means nine in ancient greek.
And with what we highlight above. We know that Togashi put way to much attention in the queen's name just for accidentally making such a "coincidence".
Furthermore, there is Oito's backstory. Oito WASN'T born to be a queen AT ALL. Her backstory shows to us reader that EVERY WOMEN of every social statues have a chance to be a queen if the king "fall in love" with them. And that includes my baby girl Theta.
Of course only 8 women success to make it, so it's nearly impossible. Plus, "the King falling in love again" is an even rarer possibility because of the context of the succession war. Indeed, why Nasubi would marry a woman when he seems to be ready to die in 2 months. Theta can't even have the time to birth a new prince at this point.
If he marries Theta she would not make any heirs to the throne, so she would be a pretty "useless" queen. That the second biggest reason why it seems impossible for Theta to be Nasubi's wife.
BUT !
Let's go back to the comparison of the meaning of Theta's name and the other queens. All the queen's name are related aproximatovely to numbers but they don't have any meaning by themselves expect from Oito = eight and Seiko which is a famous watch mark in japan.
On the other hand, the word Theta has an HUGE array of meanings. Many recognize the mathematical symbole for naming angles.
But it is above all a letter in its own that has been derived and incorporated into the alphabet of many dead languages :
The Ionic, Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, Etruscan, Gallic, Cyrillic, Slavic, Coptic and Armenian alphabet for examples.
This letter will then take as many different forms depending on the civilizations that use it.
Tumblr media
In the end, Theta’s name in comparison to others can be interpreted as adaptability, communication or even impartiality. So even throught Theta doesn't make any child she would be an excellent key of power stabilisation if she is used correctly.
The story already shows us very well how Theta can adapt to a large panel of complex situation. She is also an essential source of information and meticulous analysis.
Nasubi will probably feel for those qualities. Plus, to survive this far, Theta WILL NEED to deploy every weapons she had in order to survive. I am sure that she will indirectly stole some other royal hearts in her tricky way to the mysterious mission success 😁
Tumblr media
.
.
.
WHOA EXPLANING A THEORY IS EXAUSTING AS FUCK 😫.
But it was also sooooo fun !😊 Anyways, I hope I was clear and if I was not or if you want to hyperfixate over Theta with me TALK TO ME, IT WOULD BE AN HONOR FOR ME TO HAVE DEEP THETA CONVERSATION WITH YOU *Trembles uncontrollably and violently*
