Dunkleosteus terrelli – Voracious Orb
Tumblr media
Dunkleosteus looks like the violent brute it was: powerfully built and armour-plated round its head. It was bulkier and coral reef-style marine fishes on Holocene.
Both Dunkleosteus and this modern day relative was lamprey, smaller than Dunkleosteus.
The top ocean predator of the time, its prey could have included early sharks, large nautiluslike mollusks, arthropods and other placoderms, including both past and present day animals and monsters recently on the Earth via drift portal.
Thanks for scientists and paleoartist are revamped their appearance of Dunkleosteus, because of Queen Arianna.

Creature Awaits #216
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Continuing with bright, sunny colors in our summer features! 🌅🏝️

The Pineapplefish
A.K.A: The Mailfish, The Knightfish
Scientific Name: Cleidopus gloriamaris
Region: Reefs and harbors primarily along the eastern and western coasts of Australia
Size: Up to about 8.7" (~22cm) long
Interesting Notes: Though it's a bit hard to see in the above photograph, the reddish spot under the eye is actually home to a bright bioluminescent, symbiotic bacteria that helps its host by emitting a bright red light that attracts prey at night.

A mermaid exploring a coral forest.
So music box has coral reefs a plenty. But an ocean environment unique to the world not found here on earth are coral forests.
Massive tree like structures that grow in layers underwater.
These trees are all ancient and play host to a lot of ancient sea creatures, even some that have gone extinct in other parts of the ocean.
The largest stretches of these “coral forests” are those that are the continuation of the endless forests that continues on under water. The other underwater parts of the endless forest being composed of kelp forests.
Coral forests are unique when compared with coral reefs is the different levels of the forest.
The crown or top level plays host to similar species and biodiversity like an actual coral reefs. With other smaller variants of corals
The second level is that of the branches. The ones depicted here in the drawing. It has less light than the crown but still hosts a plethora of life. As ther are plenty of hiding places and many creatures evolved to take advantage of maneuvering around the tight turns to avoid predators.
Third level is the trunk. It is generally the most barren of the ecosystems but it is far from devoid of life. These “trunks” host a number of fish and crustaceans but the most notable creatures are these large sea sponges that grow on the trunks along with strange jellyfish or sea anemones like creatures that attach to the trunks like terrestrial mushrooms (see chicken of the woods mushrooms or red banded conk ) they prey on fish that swim near as well as filter feed on the drifting debris.
The “roots” is the final level and though it has the least available sunlight it is done to a great deal of life. This is because of the heavy amounts of sediment and dead things that drift down. Creating an ecosystem with similarities to that of a whale fall.
If a “branch” is cut the “coral” has notable agote like rings. From where the creatures grow and add layers of different colors for different environment factors.
Sometimes land people will cut off a branch or two and haul them to land where they are cut and polished into cups, trinkets and wands. Some forests have suffered from over harvesting but a lot of work in the modern age is done to keep the forests healthy and replace lost forest density.
Coral forest grow in ocean waters that are deeper than those of regular coral reefs but not as deep as those of deep coral reefs.
Mermaids and sea folk rarely venture into the coral forests as they are aware of the danger. Some species of merfolk are adapted for the environment. And even those who are not know to respect (and fear) the coral forest.

Ellimmichthyiformes were a group of ray-finned fish known from the early Cretaceous to the mid-Oligocene, about 140-30 million years ago. For much of that time they were quite widespread, found in various marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments across Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas.
Closely related to modern clupeiformes (herrings, sardines, and anchovies), and characterized by two rows of bony scutes – one in front of the dorsal fin and the other along the belly – they're also known by the nickname "double‐armored herrings".
Rhombichthys intoccabilis was a rather unusual-looking ellimmichthyiform from the mid-Cretaceous, around 95 million years ago. Living in shallow reef and lagoon waters covering what is now the West Bank in the Middle East, it was about 20cm long (~8") and had a tall narrow dorsal fin along with incredibly elongated belly scutes that gave its body a rhombus-like profile.
Juveniles of this species seem to have lacked the extended belly scutes, instead having a much more rounded body shape. This may indicate that adults and juveniles occupied very different ecological roles, or that the distinctive scutes might have been a secondary sexual characteristic involved in displaying for courtship and reproduction.

Prompt 97
Hear me out. You listening? Reading? Good.
Cryptid batfam, but they’re very ecto-contaminated. I mean, in some continuities they straight up have a lazarus pit in the batcave. At least five of them have died before! Everyone in Gotham is ecto-contaminated in some way or the other- there’s a reason normal poisons don’t really work or how they’re not lead poisoned despite Gotham canonically being half made in its entirety with lead mixed in. Now everyone is variously ecto-contaminated, some more than others. But the batclan, who have a lazarus pit? Who have died and returned or been born from those waters?
Liminal. Hella liminal. That pit is exposed, there’s nothing stopping the ecto energy! There’s already another lazarus pit under Gotham itself! And curses! And several pits of hell and temples to gods! Batman canonically had a portal opened on top of him by Barbatos- hell he was the portal. Sound familiar?
Now imagine you are a normal goon. You might have a bit of eye-shine, but that’s nothing new here in Gotham. You’re a henchman, you do the job, get paid, hope you don’t die, and go home to pay your bills. Batman? No idea what that is, you think it’s some sort of hazing. Robin? Yeah right. But you swear that light was on over there, you know you put those boxes up in the proper way, so how did it fall? That window didn’t have a crack on it, and you can feel eyes on you. And it’s not the way you’re used to, like a mugger or something, no this is something worse.
This is something actively hunting you, and you can’t tell where it is.
