Im bored so imma talk about Brooklyn 99, I think that Rosa could be on the aromatic spectrum, because like 1 I want her to be, 2 she has always expressed some uncomfortableness from being in a romantic relationship, like with Holts nephew, plus is the last episode she emphasised how she doesn’t want to be in a romantic relationship and how she doesn’t need one to be happy and I just love the idea that she could be aromantic plus all her like relationships centred around like sex or friendship and not romance and she was so uncomfortable with romance and shit

Hmmm recently watched the aristocats and it got me thinking that maybe a part of the “not like other girls” mindset comes from never seeing any girls like you in media.

Even now watching Marie be entranced by O’Malley (male lead and love interest for Marie’s mom) was jarring and confusing. As a little kid I never quite understood the appeal of romance (and tbh now I’m still confused at the difference between romance and a really good friendship but hinky 😏) so maybe the reason why I had such a strong “I’m not like the other girls Disney princesses? Ewwww lame” phase in late elementary school was because I rarely got to see girls like me (especially in media that was targeted towards girls, as opposed to things like Dinosaur Train).

My point is that representation of women has historically sucked and still needs improvement. And my other point is that we need more aro/aspec representation. I’m so tired of media where women are either bland one dimensional damsels in distress (the Poseidon adventure), always interested in romance (and not in a wierd fucked up emotionally stunted way) (aristocats, most movies tbh), or just not there at all (the thing). We’re getting better, but it’s good to be aware of where we’re coming from and how recent these improvements are

Sexuality Headcanon: I headcanon her as being aromantic bisexual. IDK, it just makes sense to me, especially in light of the series finale. Gender Headcanon: nonbinary, uses they/she pronouns A ship I have with said character: I don't really have one? I guess I crackship Valkyrie/Rosa. A BROTP I have with said character: I love love love her friendship with Jake. It's my favorite friendship in the show! They're so different from each other and you wouldn't expect them to be friends but they really do care about each other, and it's so sweet. A NOTP I have with said character: Sorry guys, I cannot get behind Rosa/Gina. Because I really really really hate Gina and I think Rosa deserves better. A random headcanon: Rosa regularly goes to Ren Faires and dresses up and goes all in for them. She also brings various Renaissance era weapons that she's collected to them. General Opinion over said character: I like her a lot! She's my favorite Brooklyn 99 character and she's so cool but also generally so interesting. I also love the running gag of how much random shit she's managed to do in her mysterious past, it's very funny.

brooklyn 99 and amatonormativity

i wanted to write this post since the brooklyn 99 finale several months ago, but i never came to it. now that we’re in aromantic awareness week 2022, i thought it’d be the perfect time to post it! the text is under the cut.

(before we start, i’d like to say english is not my first language, so i apologize in advance for any mistakes. also, all gifs in this post were made by me.)

although i did not identify as aromantic at that time, it was this scene that caught my attention.

rosa, an alloromantic character (and canonically bisexual, too) made very clear that she did not want a romantic relationship.

not wanting a romantic relationship is not exclusive to aromantic people, of course, many are romance favorable and desire one. but the fact that rosa insisted that she did not want a romantic relationship really got to me.

amatonormativity affects everyone, and sometimes we don’t even notice it. we’re always being pushed to believe that we can only feel fulfilled if we’re in a romantic relationship and that it is superior to all other kinds of relationships (you can read more about amatonormativity here).

having a character be so open about the subject and going against the norm is huge. especially for the aromantic community, as is the focus of this post.

this helps normalize the feelings and experiences of so many aromantic people. a lot of us don’t want that either, and it’s okay. we don’t need romance to be happy and complete.

rosa emphasizes how her friends and job make her happy. she’s fine on her own. and that’s enough. she doesn’t need anything else.

there’s still a lot of work to be done regarding the lack of aromantic representation in media. what was shown in brooklyn 99, while important, is just a tiny step.

to allos: we ask you to do your research on aromanticism and our community. help us spread information. educate yourself and those around you. not only during aro week but every day.

and to my fellow aros: i admire and cherish you all. don’t forget to be proud of yourself and your identity. happy aro week ♡
