An ángel arcabucero (arquebusier angel) is an angel depicted with an arquebus (an early muzzle-loaded firearm) instead of the sword traditional for martial angels, dressed in clothing inspired by that of the Andean nobles and aristocrats.

27th Jan – 3rd Feb: Visual Research

In this article, I'm going to examine a piece of work by the American illustrator Angela Wang, better known as awanqi. Her work focuses a great deal on fantasy elements with historical and biblical influences within. One recent series was nine different paintings portraying the Christian hierarchy of angels and how Wang viewed this idea.

Arquebusier Angel (Wang, 2020) illustrates three angels, those who were in the lowest run of the hierarchy. Two angels have the appearance of what Europeans believed angels looked like with pale skin, white robes, and bright hair. The main subject of the piece, and what attracts the viewer's attention, is the third angel; dark hair and clothing that contrasts the painting's fading background and the elements, carrying a rifle, pointing to the sky with lilies coming out of the barrel. The shape of the figure takes up the bottom half of the room, including the wings flowing from the back of the angel to each wing touching the corner. It was clear from the artist that this figure was significant, someone who did not suit the status quo. Their clothes appear to be similar to those worn by the nobles centuries ago, and they do not fit the plain garb of the two angels, which may mean that this angel may have had a deeper relation with man, more human than an angel.

The lilies in the artwork are suggestive as the flowers symbolize purity and regeneration (Bloom and Wild, 2021). White lilies are specifically used in many Christian weddings and funerals, as they also reflect dedication and rebirth. The angel in black appears to be focused on shooting out the flowers while the blond angel holds his own halo and uses it as a background.Perhaps the angel stressed the connection between the lily and purity, as the other angel did not look as 'holy' as the two in white. Or maybe the angel in black was about to fire real rounds into the air, the painting did not show nor suggest a target, and they had just managed to avoid their deeds.

First finished character designs for my senior Capstone project ✨

Art historical references + context under the cut:

These are ángeles arcabuceros or “archangel with arquebus” paintings, a popular subgenre of Indochristian art that emerged in 17th century colonial Peru. I’m making a series of magical girl character designs based on these paintings, using that as a jumping-off point to talk about genre, acculturation, iconography, and the ethics of appropriation — all very fun and neat stuff that I definitely won’t regret centering a 20-page research paper around and staking my graduation on! Somebody save me from my bad university decisions :))))

I have several unfinished drafts at this point, but these ones were so much fun to draw that I started and finished them within a day. The arquebusier angel silhouette is very … unique, even for the period, but I wanted to have at least one design that was very faithful to the original costumes. I thought this cute, childlike style might work because the silhouette reminded me of Japanese kindergarten uniforms more than anything. The rest of the designs are gonna deviate more from the art historical references and take more influence from iconic magical girl properties, so I’m excited to share those as I finish them. ^^
