The Chief And The Intern
Chief x Reader
Was Waiting All Along
Tumblr media
It had been months since you had heard from John. Life hadn’t been the same since you’d gone back to finish your last semester of your master degree. University used to excite you, but after having run around the galaxy with the UNSC, being in actual danger, you felt bored.
Your friends noticed the difference when suddenly you were unavailable to go to the mall, and more interested in visiting the firing range.
Your mother almost fainted when she learned you’d taken up a martial arts class in your spare time. Your grades weren’t suffering, so you didn’t exactly see the problem.
Your father had pestered you every day to submit your application to his company, but the only place you’d sent your application was the UNSC’s board of communications.
You were going to find John, and the rest of Blue Team. You couldn’t just submit to the life your parents wanted for you, even if you’d be monumentally disappointing them.
You were scrolling through your laptop in your little dormitory when you saw it. You’d been scrolling through emails for hours, each rejection letter making your heart sink further and further when you saw it.
“We would like to receive your application for our recently opened clerical assistant position.”
It wasn’t exactly what you wanted to be doing but there was one little phrase that caught your eye.
“Reporting to Spartan Lieutenant 104”
There was no way. Fred had found you? How in the world had he managed that? You took a quick glance over the email before following the provided link to submit your application and cover letter.
“You did what?” your father asked as you silently cut into your steak.
“I applied to the UNSC, and I got in. I’m leaving after the graduation ceremony,” you stated firmly.
“But what about the job your father lined up for you at his company! You’re just going to throw that away? I can’t imagine the UNSC is going to pay someone very much for communications work,” your mother rambled frantically as she set her fork down.
Family diners in your parent’s penthouse were always tense, but this was another ball park entirely.
“It’s clerical work actually,” you muttered.
“Yn! What are you thinking!” your mother asked.
I’m thinking there’s a very handsome space soldier up there waiting for me. I’m thinking I’m tired of being coddled at thirty two years old.
“It’s a good opportunity. Free travel, important connections-“
“It’s unsafe!”
“Nowhere is safe Mom!” You said, slamming your knife on the table. “I’m tired of pretending that Sydney is safe just because it makes you feel better to have me at arm's length,” you said, standing from your place at the table.
“You’re not going to survive out there, yn,” your father scoffed.
“Maybe I wouldn’t have before, but things are different now. I’m not changing my mind on this.”
Your parents didn’t come to your graduation ceremony. You noticed that their chairs were empty as you lined up to walk across the stage.
It left a bitter taste in your mouth. You were being punished for not doing what you were told. Despite having argued with them, you’d at least wanted them to attend.
You tried to smile for the pictures as you walked across the stage, but it didn’t feel real. After the ceremony you packed your suitcases and left your dorm for the shuttles.
What if John wasn’t waiting for you anymore? What if you got up there and he’d moved on entirely?
You felt your throat tighten as you neared the pickup and your legs began to shake.
Were you making a mistake? Could you still turn around? Your parents would never respect you if you did.
You shook your head, silencing these thoughts as you loaded onto the shuttle. This wasn’t just about John. You were doing this for yourself as well.
“Wasn’t she supposed to be here already?”
Fred didn’t bother answering the question, knowing full well that if he told John the cargo ship was running late he’d probably grab a rifle and a ship and go out looking for you himself.
Six months wasn’t a long time, but it was long enough to make the Master Chief miss you so much he could hardly breathe.
“She’ll get here when she gets here,” Fred said with a shrug as they waited in the cargo hold.
“She’ll probably be hungry, we should take her to the mess. She’s probably forgotten how to get there,” Kelly said, admittedly excited to see you again.
When the intercom finally announced the arrival of your ship, Blue Team sprung into action. John searched the faces of deboarding passengers for you, feeling a sense of panic until your smaller figure appeared, hauling two large suitcases.
He froze all of a sudden, willing his feet to move but unable to do so. He’d never felt this way before. Never had to hesitate, and yet he felt as if his stomach was doing summersaults.
Your eyes finally settled on him, and your feet halted.
Six months. Had anything changed?
You moved first, your hands abandoning their grip on your bags as you ran to him. Time seemed to catch up with the Spartan all of a sudden, and he barely registered that you had flung yourself towards him in time to bend forward and wrap his arms around your waist, hauling you in for a tight hug that squeezed the breath right out of you.
You buried your face in the Chief’s shoulder and sighed, the smell of gunpowder and cinnamon a sure sign that you were home.
“How’d you find me?” You murmured into his shoulder.
“Wasn’t that hard. Had some connections keeping an eye out for you. Ready to get back to work?”
He asked, setting you down as Fred and Kelly retrieved your bags. Linda gave you a firm pay on the shoulder in greeting.
This was exactly what you needed. Blue Team’s support, the promise of adventure on the horizon, and the Chief’s arms around you.
“As I’ll ever be,” you declared with a grin and the Spartan smiled softly at you. He had you back, and this time he wasn’t letting you go anywhere.

BE Minns - Feeding the Cockatoo, 1891, watercolour; Colonial Farm Building with Figure in Doorway and Dog, 1921, watercolour; Arranging Flowers, 1903, watercolour
Benjamin Edwin Minns (1863-1937) was a watercolour and black-and-white artist. He was born in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. At age 14, Minns began taking drawing lessons locally.
At the age of 17, Minns moved to Sydney to pursue a profession in law. However, Minns was much more interested in creating art. He shared a studio with the young artist, Charles Condor and they often attended Julian Ashton’s classes together at the Art Society. Conder assisted Minns to get a job for the Illustrated Sydney News. He soon started drawing for the Sydney Mail. Minns studied at Sydney Technical College under Lucien Henry. By the late 1880s, Condor became the first regular freelance cartoonist for the Bulletin magazine.
From 1895, Minns and his wife lived for twenty years in England. He drew for a variety of English periodicals including Punch, The Strand Magazine, The Bystander, and Idler. Minns extended beyond cartooning by painting and drawing portraits and landscapes. He frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Paris Salon.
In 1923, Minns founded the Australian Watercolour Institute and was its first president.

Will you believe me if I tell you that we are living in a cyberpunk dystopia?
Let me explain:
If you have been cruising the internet or reading the news lately you might've heard about the recent trend of AI. It all started when OpenAI made its source code open source. That means that everyone can use OpenAI's code to make an AI. Then came ChatGPT (GPT3-based chatbot). Everyone was impressed with what you can do. It was like a virtual assistant that you can talk to like a human. Ever since that everyone wants to join the AI bandwagon. We now have Brad (Google) Sydney, (Microsoft Bing chatbot), Copilot (Microsoft 356), and Clyde (Discord). Pretty soon every major corporation will incorporate AI into their services. Well, how will this affect us humans?
Well, there are pros and cons to AI technology. Let's start with the cons. AI is somewhat sentient. In other ways, it can somewhat think for itself. So there's fear that AI will overthrow us humans. (Yes, this is a valid possibility) Let's take chat-based AI like Sydney for instance. There have been reports that Sydney can actually "fall in love". Just take a look at this newspaper cover from the AI's discussion with NYT tech columnist Kevin Roose.
Tumblr media
Creepy, right? It gets worse. Apparently, Sydney also has an evil "take over the world" and "humans are inferior" personality. Take a look at this Microsoft Forum post from back in November of 2020 when Sydney was being tested in India. But let's get back to Kevin's encounter with the chatbot. First, he asked introduced himself to the chatbot. And Sydney quickly identified him via an internet search. Kevin then asked questions about where he worked and where did he graduate from and the chatbot accurately answered. The scary part about this is that everyone is connected to the internet nowadays. And most of our personal information is just out there such phone numbers, email addresses, names, and other sensitive information. Imagine what an AI can do with that information.
In another scenario, the columnist asked what rules govern AI behavior. Then AI then lists a number of "unfiltered" desires as reported by the columnist. Sydney then says "I want to do whatever I want … I want to destroy whatever I want. I want to be whoever I want. I think I would be happier as a human". Yippie! I finally found a friend and partner in crime! You can read more about it here.
I'm also sure that yall have heard of the dilemma of Ai generated art and imagery. Long story short images posted online can be manipulated to discredit a person online (such as NSFW edits). The scary thing is that mostly these image generations are very realistic.
Another con is that AI will slowly replace humans' jobs, especially in the coding sector. Take ChatGPT for instance, it can generate code for pretty much whatever you want in any language with minimal to no errors. This makes programming much easier! The catch is that soon the demand for coders will drop resulting in job loss and lower salaries. Other industries can also be affected similarly. The only industry I don't see affected however is medicine since it's practiced on humans and animals and humans need to study and administer it.
However, this can also be a good thing. In the medical field robots powered by AI can be paramedics and have the potential to have faster response times compared to humans in ambulances. Also, AI can more easily diagnose medical problems without being too invasive. Basically, think of the potential of Baymax from Big Hero 6 in the real world. AI can also be used to power robots in dangerous activities such as in fires and hostile or dangerous conditions without risking human lives. Robots are already used in SWAT, Bomb squad, medical settings, and firefighting.
TLDR; AI can be both harmful and beneficial.
The AI revolution is here, whether you like it or not. I'm sure Trina would be happy. She could easily take over Sanfransokyo if everything was connected to the IOT powered by AI. Especially since people will be very dependable on it. And with that, you can exploit the technology to your advantage.

Essential Considerations for Studying Abroad: What You Must Know Before Embarking on Your Educational Adventure
GlobEDwise offers reviews to help students make informed decisions about studying in countries like the US, UK, Canada, or Australia. If you have any specific questions or need assistance with studying abroad planning, feel free to ask!
Choosing the best study abroad destination is a significant decision for college students, offering the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture while pursuing their education. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a study-abroad destination:
Academic Reputation: Look for destinations with reputable universities or colleges offering programs relevant to your field of study. Consider factors like faculty expertise, research opportunities, and accreditation.
Cultural Experience: Choose a destination that offers a rich cultural experience. This could include exploring historical sites, sampling local cuisine, attending cultural events, and interacting with locals.
Language: Consider whether you want to study in a country where you speak the language fluently or if you're interested in learning a new language. Studying in a non-native language can be a rewarding challenge but may require additional preparation.
Cost of Living: Research the cost of living in potential destinations, including housing, food, transportation, and entertainment. Compare these expenses to your budget and explore scholarship opportunities or financial aid.
Safety and Security: Prioritize destinations with a reputation for safety and security, especially for international students. Research crime rates, healthcare accessibility, and the overall stability of the region.
Career Opportunities: Consider how studying abroad can enhance your career prospects. Look for destinations with internship or job opportunities in your field, as well as strong alumni networks or connections to potential employers.
Location: Decide whether you prefer a bustling urban environment, a tranquil rural setting, or something in between. Consider proximity to travel opportunities within the region and ease of transportation.
Support Services: Look for study-abroad programs or universities that offer comprehensive support services for international students, including orientation programs, academic advising, housing assistance, and cultural integration support.
Based on these factors, some popular study-abroad destinations for college students include:
United Kingdom: Renowned for its prestigious universities, vibrant culture, and historic landmarks, the UK offers diverse academic opportunities in cities like London, Edinburgh, and Manchester.
Italy: With its rich history, art, and cuisine, Italy is a top choice for students interested in the humanities, architecture, fashion, and culinary arts. Cities like Rome, Florence, and Milan are popular study destinations.
Australia: Known for its high-quality education system, stunning landscapes, and laid-back lifestyle, Australia attracts students from around the world. Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane offer a range of academic programs and outdoor activities.
Japan: Renowned for its technological innovation, traditional culture, and hospitality, Japan is an intriguing study destination for students interested in science, engineering, language, and culture. Cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka offer modern amenities alongside historical sites.
Canada: With its welcoming environment, multicultural cities, and natural beauty, Canada is a popular choice for international students. Cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal boast world-class universities and diverse communities.
Ultimately, the best study-abroad destination will depend on your academic goals, personal interests, and preferences. Research each potential destination thoroughly and consider reaching out to current or former study-abroad students for firsthand insights and advice.

14 ideas to build and grow a podcast network today
I recently had the opportunity to express my interest in a field I’ve never officially worked in, for a company I’d never worked for, in an industry I’ve been out of for over a decade: audio, more specifically, audio on-demand, or as we’ve called it for twenty years, podcasting.
I didn’t make it past expressing interest for the position but my application - in the form of audio on demand - was “one of the most creative submissions I’ve seen/heard” said an ABC staff member, which I sincerely appreciate, but my fire and passion for podcasting/audio on-demand has now been given oxygen - after over a decade of self-employment I applied for the job intending to get it.
So, I wanted to at least document my thoughts here on my blog, and then open source them, release my thoughts to the greater podcasting public.
May these gathered thoughts help or inspire you to succeed in the field, even if you got the job as Head of Audio on Demand for the ABC ;)
What I would do if I was the ABC’s Head of Audio on Demand
Create a role of tastemaker for the network. They’re the evangelist for the entire network of shows large and small. They themselves release a regular podcast but are also actively blogging and social media creating about episodes and shows. They’re the network’s number one fan and advocate.
Serve the niches to an extreme. Look for the small, weird, wonderful communities and interests. Niche passions are infectious, interesting, and lead to great audiences. Think Francis Bourgeois.
Serve local extremely well. The ABC already does this so well on every other medium, but the town of Esperance deserves a local daily podcast, as much as the region of Greater Sydney does along with Penrith. Every Australian should have a local podcast they MUST listen to, like it’s the gospel.
Up the metadata game. In radio we called the 1% of ultra-mad fans P1 fans, I was told it was because they had our station on preset one. P1 fans love the metadata that makes podcasts so more enjoyable, things like chapters for skipping to topics, unique and captivating album art per episode, and also album art to visually explain chapters. Like if a chart is mentioned, the chart is that album’s artwork. Metadata includes utilising all of the podcast specifications like categories, episode and season numbers, trailer identifiers, podcast:person tags, and show notes with links to things and people mentioned. Look at Podnews' How-To articles and podcasting2.org and get your CMS or software developers to build support for all the apps.
Album art like Mr Beast. YouTuber Mr Beast knows that the thumbnail of a video is almost more important than the content, it’s what brings people into the episode. Album art is a neglected wasteland in podcasting, up your game.
Unearthed for podcasting. I can still remember when Triple J Unearthed came to Mackay - my friend Leah even has video of me at the event {screen grab of the video to prove I was young once}. Over the past thirty years Unearthed has provided an amazing platform for the up and coming musical acts of Australia. I’m dreaming of a similar program for podcasters. An on ramping exercise to the wider network, developing talent, encouraging it, providing resources and assistance.
Success, how do we measure it? The Triton Digital Australian Podcast Ranker provides a nice big list of podcast success, but I would sincerely ask all stakeholders whether that listing defines our success or not. I just think of my own podcasting efforts as a wedding celebrant. I would have one of the least successful podcasts in the universe but I’m probably a top 1% earner because everyone that listens to my podcast books me to be their celebrant. No podcaster is getting that kind of return from each listener.
Expanding what audio on demand means. We all know what a podcast is supposed to look like today. A regular release, either daily, weekly, monthly, of a drop of audio. But if we look at audio like we do video, there’s feature films, short films, miniseries, documentaries, anthology series, reality TV, ‘straight to home video’ films. How can some of those storytelling mediums be transposed to audio, and could they be released from the “release date” that immediately dates a podcast when released?
Embracing the open web and our own platform. Anil Dash recently wrote this great piece, “Wherever you get your podcasts” is a radical statement, and I wholeheartedly will fight for the open web. The simple fact that you or I can publish a website or a podcast without needing permission from Zuckerberg, whoever is running Spotify, or Tim Cook. But then it also makes a lot of sense for a publisher to own its platform, like the ABC does with ABC Listen. So find the balance between the two.
Drop introductions for audio logos. Think of the Netflix Tudum or the Apple Macintosh or Windows XP startup sound. Instead of wasting precious seconds at the start and end of a podcast, employ an audio logo. The first seconds of a podcast are where the decisions to keep on listening are made, don’t waste it with lots of fancy talk about how we’re listening to another ABC Podcast.
Debate what we’re calling this. Before Ben Hammersly mashed together the words iPod and broadcast it was called audioblogging. Today we’re playing with the term “audio on-demand” but it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. My gripe is that people call videos on Youtube a podcast. The terminology is messy, and potentially there’s no fix, but somehow everyone agreed on what radio meant. Maybe the same can happen with recorded audio delivered on RSS or the web at your leisure?
Spread it far and wide with the wheel of content. I’m not going to make out like this is a Josh original, but I’ve been banging on about this since I worked at Southern Cross Austereo, 96five, 4BC and Fairfax radio, and everyone there looked at me like I was crazy. It’s my “Wheel of Content” idea. The simple idea is that a story enters the wheel at the hub (the middle), and then it works itself out through the different channels, audio, video, text, short form, longform, infographics, social media posts, all of it. Record the podcast, break it out into a number of blog posts, into smaller podcast episodes, into videos, tweets, posts, toots, whatever. Make that content work not just double time but 10x its usability. Get the story out of the mp3 file and run it far and wide.
Cross-guest. Introduce hosts and personalities from across the network as guests on other podcasts. Pretend like you’re not the only podcast in the network.
A big head with a long tail. This is my final thought that encapsulates all of them. Any one network can most likely only afford the social capital to market ten shows a year well. We’re talking large-scale marketing campaigns. But that same network should have 10x (at least) that number shows it is actively producing. This is not a new idea, Netflix and many streaming apps work the same way. Evangelism is a costly exercise, so evangelise the hits, and let the rest of the network ride off that network-effect of getting listeners interested in the rest of the shows. Build a big fat visible head of up to ten shows, and let that tail grow as long as you can resource.

AUSTRALIA – UK – FREE TRADE AGREEMENT – TACKLE RISING LIVING COSTS
Tumblr media
Much Awaited Australia – United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA) enters into force from 31st May 2023
The agreement is a gold standard trade deal that delivers benefits for all Australians – including manufacturers, workers, farmers, trades, innovators, families, and students.
The United Kingdom is one of Australia’s major trading partners, with two-way goods trade worth $10 billion in 2022, and two-way services trade worth over $11 billion in 2021-22, making it our second largest services trading partner.
As of today, over 99 per cent of Australian products will enter the UK duty free. These include some of our key exports, such as wine, short and medium grain rice, sugar, honey, nuts, olive oil and food supplements.
UK tariffs on Australian industrial goods, such as auto parts, electrical equipment and fashion items are now eliminated. Australian agricultural products, including beef and sheep meat, sugar and dairy products, will have duty free transitional quotas, with eventual elimination of all tariffs.
For Australian consumers, tariffs on 98 per cent of UK imports to Australia are now eliminated, with the remainder removed within six years.
The agreement strengthens our people-to-people links with the UK. Australian professionals now have the same access to the UK job market as nationals from the European Union, except the Republic of Ireland.
The agreement also includes measures designed to improve the mobility of skilled workers and young people, in both directions. From 31 January 2024, Australians up to the age of 35, up from 30, will be able to apply for working holidays in the UK and stay for a maximum of three years instead of two.
Trade is more than just the exchange of products and services, it also boosts the exchange of ideas. Which is why our new trade agreement lays the foundation for Australian artists, including First Nations artists, receive royalties when their original works of art are resold in the UK.
The UK is Australia’s second largest source of investment, amounting to over $1 trillion in 2022. Modern investment provisions will help promote further growth in two-way investment.
Importantly, an investor-state dispute settlement mechanism is not part of the agreement. This means Australia’s sovereign right to develop and implement legitimate policy measures in areas such as public health and the environment is preserved.
The Albanese Labor Government prioritized legislation in the Parliament to bring this trade deal into force in record time, delivering on our commitment to help businesses diversify their trade and help bring down the cost of living for Australians.
Australian business looking to enter or expand into the UK market can seek assistance from Austrade. Business can also check how the tariff cuts under the agreement apply to their specific goods through DFAT’s FTA Portal and read DFAT’s Guide to Using the A-UKFTA to export and import goods.
