Spider-Man: Homecoming
(Credit to @drallimylime for the beautiful art! :) )
Hey everyone! (see what i did there? huh? I’m sorry, I’ll stop now.)
Today, I will be reviewing the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe... Spider-Man: Homecoming!
Let’s get started, shall we?
Plot
Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is just your average fifteen-year-old high school sophomore; except, of course, for the fact that he’s actually leading a double life. His secret identity: the famous vigilante known as Spider-Man. After his time with the Avengers (see my review for Captain America: Civil War), Peter keeps his new spider-suit and works as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in his neighborhood in Queens, but he is under the wary eye of his mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Feeling like he’s being taken for granted and being denied from reaching his full potential, Peter begins to rebel against Tony and targets a group of illegal arms dealers who managed to make weapons out of alien materials. The leader of that group is the villainous Vulture (Michael Keaton), who will stop at nothing to keep his cargo safe and his business booming. As Peter continues on his quest to stop the Vulture and his posse, he begins to realize that he is up against something he might not win.
Some Thoughts
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has not ceased to amaze me in recent years. Spider-Man: Homecoming was definitely a soaring high note in the MCU, but for different reasons than I expected.
When I heard that they were hiring a new Spider-Man and making him the main character of his own movie, I was expecting a third origin story. It’s not that I dislike origin stories, its just that I feel like everybody knows the story of this particular spidery hero. Peter Parker is a nerdy high-schooler who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gets amazing new spider-like abilities, Uncle Ben tells him that “with great power comes great responsibility,” and then immediately gets murdered, and in turn, Peter makes himself a spider suit and fights crime. We’ve seen it with Tobey Maguire, we’ve seen it with Andrew Garfield, we get it.
This one surprised me, though. right off the bat, Peter Parker was already Spider-Man, he pretty much already knew how to use and control his powers, Uncle Ben was never even mentioned, and nobody told Peter that “with great power comes great responsibility.” Basically, I was treated to a new Peter Parker without having to sit through an origin story I already know. That was really refreshing to me.
The story didn’t focus so much on Spider-Man and his powers, but instead, focused more on the kid inside the suit. I’m going to be perfectly honest here: as much as I adore Andrew Garfield and as much as I tolerate Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland really took the cake this time around. He played Peter Parker with a level of charisma and realism that I didn’t even think was possible to pull off. We got a little taste of what he had to offer as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, but now that I’ve seen him as the titular character in his own movie, I know that he shines like the star he is. This one’s a keeper, Hollywood.
Which brings me to my topic of the day:
casting!
We’ve all seen actors who seem like they were made for the role they were cast in. You know, your RDJ/Tony Stark, your Keanu Reeves/John Wick, your Heath Ledger/Joker, your Michael Keaton/Riggan Thompson, etc.
(This is a little off topic, but you know what the funny thing is? Riggan Thompson was a washed up actor famous for playing a superhero named Birdman in the movie Birdman: Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance (2015). In Spider-Man: Homecoming, he plays a supervillain called The Vulture with similar powers... Anyone else find that funny? I wonder if that was intentional.)
Anyway, I think that Tom Holland definitely deserves to be in that category with his portrayal of Peter Parker. He was everything I’ve ever wanted in an onscreen Peter Parker and more. He looked the part, he sounded the part, everything was just spot on and it made my heart so happy. I guess the same could be said about most of the other teens in the movie, Most notably Jacob Batalon as Peter’s best friend Ned (dude was hysterical), but Tom Holland just stole every scene he was in.
He may have been nineteen or maybe even twenty when filming was going on, but in the movie, Peter said he was fifteen, and it was actually very believable.
Ok, I know this whole review has basically been me just gushing over Tom Holland... He was just the shining point in this movie for me. I’ll get to the rating now.
Rating:
ten stars out of ten. Thank you for reading!
