There are also grocery mods available such as SS realistic cooking mod and the Bulk Grocery Mod. Please keep in mind that I did not follow any requirements for these two mods as the grocery part of the build was made simply for aesthetics and storytelling. You are welcome to make adjustments! speaking. of time. im really sorry i took so long ._. i kind of suck at estimating how long projects will take and how much time i have. thanks for being so patient!!

oh, also, some lyrics and drawings have story reasons for being grouped together, and some went where they looked good. uh. ideally id make sure everything had reason for its location, but this is one area where i did correctly estimate my time, instead of getting stuck in the planning phase.

also in the process of typing all this ive already gone back twice to change stuff in the images and re-add them to the post lol

OH also!! the part where vitalasy jumps off to his death! is as far as i can tell NOT canon accurate!! all the footage shows him jumping off the prison, since thats where he respawns. i didnt think to check this until after id already drawn most of the stuff, and already had the prison drawn, and i didnt want to reorganize the drawing. im telling myself that we only see a few of the later deaths and so theoretically the first one could have been jumping off a grassy ledge somewhere but its still bothering me and i needed to mention it.

anyway yeah really hope you like it i tried some new stuff with this one im not sure how well it turned out and thanks again for being so patient!!

EDITING TO ADD SOME MORE WORDS!!! i love talking about my art! so first, all the text on signs and stuff i did go back and look at videos and vods to make sure was entirely accurate, and i wrote all the words entirely by myself. for the lyrics and other text(death message and DELIVERANCE), i used a text tool first to make sure the words would be neat and where i needed them, and then traced over that on a new layer and deleted the original text layer. my handwritting fucking sucks always no matter what, this was a very necessary step. also! this is officially the first thing i have drawn entirely on my phone, rather than on my ipad like i used to do! also i dont use a stylus of any type i just draw with my finger lol.

review because im sure the girl bloggers would love this book!

Patti's choice of words allowed me to transport myself to the exact location she describes, it's impeccable as if I were living it. Without comparison with the work of others but only with hers, I need to say that I don't know if any will be as special to me as Just Kids but Devotion definitely increases my love for her. | 4.5/5 ⭐️

Which Shingyoku are you?? + my takes explained (long post)

All of my Shingyoku designs/interpretations with fumo style until Im done making non chibi and rendered art of them!

Ill be dedicating this post to introduce my takes for all of these designs, their themes/inspirations/backstories because each have their own :)

A little introduction

I only used the in game sprites as a base for these designs. I wanted to use only official art (and I only considere art from ZUN as official for the HRtP crew, not art from artists who worked on *ZUN supervised* games).

So only the sprites. They also have no portraits, so its pretty vague, which is great for me because I could do variations with different influences. I also used a bit the yin yang orb design for 2 of my designs.

I post these as a reminder to how the sprites look dont mind me I only have this with me but im pretty much sure people who will read that know how the sprites look ok.

Basic base that I always use then add on more personal details and inspiration. Overall, for the first one: black hair, traditional/ancient japanese clothing ressembling shinto priest/male heian era attire with white on top, blue on bottoms & the blue (eboshi) hat. For the second: red hair, silhouette reference is more vague so i went with different variations, overall white top, red bottoms, and blue overcoat. Also some sort of brown (?) horns or hair accessories.

Notes:

For the brunette, the hairstyle is rather vague. I personally always go with long hairstyles contrary to the more popular interpretations in fanarts (it inspired me more for variations, im bad at designing short hairstyles).

For the redhead, I end up never exploiting the magic wand. I think the silhouette reminds of a magician, but for my take I went with more japanese themes (+ 1 chinese), a magician didnt inspire me and I would struggle giving it sense with the overall yin yang theme.

They also have red eyes on the sprites, but for takes where theyre human, I gave them different, more varied eye colors. I prefer to link flashing red eyes to non human individuals.

When doing a "2 distinct entities" take, I give a personal name to both beings, not being fond of calling them respectively "Shin" and "Gyoku". Please keep in mind tho that the names I picked do not refer to anything specific and are just names that I really like.

1A. MAIN TAKE

Shingyoku's creators. Two distinct people. Lead figures of a backstory for HRtP which explain the origins of multiple characters as well as a bit of history of the Hakurei shrine.

The main theme was: two (human) shrine officiants with opposite personalities, status and background who become inseparable as they got their traditional training together, a tomboyish shrine maiden (her name is Orochi) master of incident solving/spirits sealing, and an effeminate shinto priest kannushi in the making (his name is Toru) master of medical assistance.

The pair become "fusional" (tough for me to explain, Im clueless if there is a specific term for it, but basically a bond too strong to be a friendship, but not quite being romantic either). Due to their opposite status, they werent allowed to stay together and would run away in secret. The two hid in the mountains located above (the pc98 refered) Hell. With time, they acquired supernatural powers and the two of their spirits fused into one being: Shingyoku. So its some sort of an "ancestor", if that sound simplier.

Heres a whole post of the pair drawn in non chibi & more detailed style:

1B MAIN TAKE (SEQUEL TO 1A)

Shingyoku, a deity born from the fused spirits of two shrine officiants who reached godhood( 1A). Shapeshifting is one of their main ability, so all of these designs are the same person.

Main theme: a god of balance who regulates life and death. Kuzuryu/9 headed dragon was also a big inspiration, as some of their powers refer to the species and they have 9 total forms. The 1st of the 4 "human" designs is their "true" form they were born with. The 2nd is a "weak" form they assume to recover strength. The redhead and brunette forms, they would assume in order to hide most of their beast traits and fit in human society, pretending to be an apprentice shrine officiant.

No matter the form they assume, they keep the same personality (dont trust the expression variations here, these were solely put for some more varied fumo faces). The brunette has a more modernized/fantasy shinto priest fit, the redhead is a miko design inspired by wa lolita alt fashion. The "weak" form has some small chinese influence (I joke they are pretending to be a Gensokyo sage). The "true" form does not refer to anything specific outside of color dualities and balance & ornated kimono to reflect their love for refinement & have a dramatic godish look. Arrangement is not an intentional/wanted oiran reference, it was purely put this way so that I could let their very long hair flows, the large obi would have obstructed if it was in the back, for example.

Shingyoku was born & resides in Hell. They were formerly a guardian preventing residents from escaping and invade Gensokyo. They had a very secluded, solitary life outside of a close bound they had with Konngara (headcanon). A series of events would push Reimu to bring them to operate directly from Gensokyo. I also imagine that depending on the route taken in HRtP, Shingyoku's fate would change (but Ill keep that for maybe an other post, this is only an introduction).

I am currently working on rendered art of these redhead and brunette forms, the only non chibi ones that I posted monthes ago are outdated so please wait. Here is however the post of non chibi art for the "true" form:

B. SECONDARY TAKE & ALT ENDING OF 1A

Started as a silly "genderbend AU", these are now the lead figures of a story/alt ending of 1A. In this take, 1A never run away, so theyre separated, and so their spirits didnt fuse to become Shingyoku.

The main themes: these arent Shingyoku per say, rather just "Shingyoku themed". Both are youkais.

The redhead: he is a mysterious wandering oni, and has lived for a very long time (so much he forgot most of his past). His origins remain unknown. He is a hooligan and a thief with a habit of stealing properties in order to feed his classic oni's drink addition. His personal name is Shu.

The brunette: she is a half human half fudakaeshi youkai who wishes to fit in human society, the Hakurei shrine allowing her to enter shrine duties. There she would grow close to the Hakurei elder/kannushi, gets engaged to him and assume his position after he passed. She does all of the management while the generation of Hakurei shrine maidens handle incidents. Her name is Zuki.

Their story starts a bit after 1A alt ending: Orochi is pushed to join back her family (its a whole story) while Toru retire from duties. Zuki would enters a while after them, being welcomed by the kannushi. Shu would only appear a bit before Reimu's timeline; he had the shrine funds as his target until giving up as in known Hakurei shrine fashion they were broke.

He did several attempts tho which is how the two met. They would bicker all the time until eventually becoming friends and keep the borders gates together. Their relationship is strictly as friends & coworkers, as Zuki was much attached to her late husband, and in general I write Shu as having zero interest in romance.

C. A WHOLE DIFFERENT TAKE

This one is still a work in progress and subject to changes for the writings.

One take which has no bond with all the ones above, parallel universe/AU of some sort (?) I dont know. Two distinct entities, and tackling on the Hakurei's shrine & god origins.

The main theme: both are diviners.

The redhead: is a golden dragon (chinese zodiac/dragon of metal) and mainly refering Yi Jing/hexagram. She originates from an other heavenly realm of divine dragons (dont quote me on the logic of this, I am still working on it, I just like to joke she comes from space), which she ran away from and ends up in Gensokyo. The main inspiration for her design is qi lolita alt fashion. Her name is Jiji.

The brunette: a (human) onmyoji focusing on divination impersonating a shinto priest for credibility. Initially from a family of warriors, wouldnt inherit any title being a cadet & lacking skills. He would tries entering priesthood until stopping as he grew interest for shamanism over pure faith. He is in design the closest to actual historically accurate male court heian era attire out of all my brunette designs. His name is Mana.

The two would meet as she arrived clueless and lost in Gensokyo & he had been evicted yet again from an other shrine because of his fraudulent business. Most of their story being their whereabouts travelling & trying to make a living watching the seasons pass in a classic heian era works such as Genji Monogatari.

This is the only of my pairs that end up in an official romantic relationship & get engaged. A series of events brought them to be stationned at the borders's gates (too long to explain in this intro post). He would become a divine spirit, but with time only a yin yang orb would remains at the gates, a similar fused spirit fashion as 1A (which I wished I could explain in a clear way but cant because I dont english that very well). When Reimu would face them much later, they would only appear as emotionless illusions.

I am currently working on rendered non chibi style art of them at the moment, planned on being posted soon so please wait :)

AN OTHER TAKE?

I actually have a bonus pair of design which I dont plan on posting online at least for now. They arent much inspired, have no established writings, so its fairly weak and hard for me to introduce them, its mostly scrapped designs. Maybe one day :)

Loved spiderverse. When it comes to your characters, is there any alternate universe version of them you think would be interesting to explore or to have the original meet? Like a hero meets a villain version of themselves, etc.

So did I! The passion that has been put into both movies always re-ignites my passion to work on my own heroes~ As for them meeting alternate versions of themselves, I actually made a post a few years back about a little sidestory involving two villains of mine named PinPoint and Wayfarer in which they meet alternate selves. Pinpoints power is finding the exact duplicate of any object, so like, if you've lost a button from the same shirt, she could locate the other button if she was holding one of the remaining ones. Wayfarer on the other hand, can transport himself anywhere he's seen, and when Pinpoint shares a vision of a place that an object is, Wayfarer is able to transport them there instantly. But people don't have exact duplicates, even as twins its rare for someone to have completely identical DNA, so when Pinpoint touches people, she's able to see a version of themselves not of their dimension, and if she shares that vision with Wayfarer, he can take them hopping back and forth through it. The kids get accidentally sucked along with them as Pin and Wayfarer look for versions of themselves where their lives didn't take the route it did, and they end up meeting a few of their counterparts. I think the one I enjoyed daydreaming about is them meeting Jin's twin (who's name I cannot remember because I am a TERRIBLE OC creator! It will hit me 15 minutes from now while i do dishes im sure). Jin's twin didn't get born, his Art cells bonded to Jin's fetus instead allowing him control over his parasitic fetus's power. In that timeline Jin simply goes to culinary school more or less like he wanted, and meeting the brother that never actually existed really freaked everybody out since he isn't a conscious being in their dimension. Shimi's timeline actually doesn't change in the other dimension which also kinda freaks everyone out, even though in the other dimension he's slightly older than he is now. Winston finds out that he doesn't even go the hero route and simply goes to work and basically isn't present for that whole arc. Which allows him some very necessary self insight since he's an idiot and is allergic to any self awareness whatsoever lol Izumi remaining a villain in that timeline and trying to get back into their dimension is very fun to mess around with as well, like Pin and Wayfarer, Alternate Izumi would want to be in the dimension where he is saved by friends he never was allowed to make in this one. One day I'd love to do a little comic about it cause I LOVE alternate timeline shinanigans, but I don't have a single character I don't have fun thinking about if they met their alternate selves how that'd be like~

hi zoe i love ur blog and opinions. u always have just amazing analysis and like. general ideas that just are mindblowing. and i was wondering if you're often inspired by art and stuff around you that helps you come to your thoughts? asking because honestly i always feel like im stealing and plagiarizing other people's ideas and thoughts when im inspired by someone's work to create my own - like my tone or style is too similar, or my words are practically the same. and it feels awful because im like is this even inspired or am i literally just stealing? it feels like i can't ever create work with my own thoughts and idk what to do with that. sorry i know that was like a ton of info feel free to ignore

wow omg thank you. this is crazy to hear because i would personally say that the last time i had an idea it was about dean winchester. but for sure those ideas would really really have not had been posts if i didn’t see other ideas and stretch them to a new location on the media body. but thank you.Ummm i would say that it’s difficult to tell when i have a thought where it came from except when it’s not and know exactly where it came from. but definitely i don’t live in a vacuum and i am always always always always always very inspired by everything and by art and art and art and art and other peoples analyses and ideas about art and and and and and. and honestly i think that originality of ideas is a little bit nothing i think that the meaning is mostly in the expression of the idea bc like most art is a pretty simple idea but it’s done welll it commits to the idea and it trusts you to be blown away. slightly unrelatedly I think there is enormous value in intentionally attempting forgeries of others work although of course for this you wouldn’t pass it off as your own. Back to being related i think generally it’s more difficult to actually plagiarize on accident than you might fear. sometimes i worry im writing something i just forgot i read but there was kind of nothing i could do about that worry so i decided to move on and anyway if i forgot i read it then i definitely forgot the context so im already doing something new with it. i find that when i consume a lot of one type of writing for example like if im doing an english paper i sometimes slip into writing in the same style of the book im doing a paper on without realizing. Maybe a solution to feeling stuck in copying a style is to just get it out of you like new document and purge it just keep copying until you’ve run out of recombinations based on this source material and then you begin to scratch at the surface of the thing you were submerged in and break into the new yourself that swallowed a source like a spider and uses its thread to make a new web but it’s not your thread but it’s your web. I think that tends to happen to me in a way when I have an obsession on an idea i first encountered expressed in art and then began trying to re-express it myself. Which is super normal and most art is the re-expression of other expressions for sure. i don’t know i guess i used to be very terrified of plagiariaztipn in my poetry and then i started reading poems and i would find lines in things i had never read before that were very similar to things i had written already and i started realize you will be copying something whether youve seen it already or not so thats that and not really because of this and more because of fractals but definitely relevant to this is i started to make a belief system that the wider your lens the more infinitely small the number of things and all you can do is try to say something that in all of history has never been uttered but means something that everyone who ever lived has felt you know. i hope this helps definitely most of my thoughts are not my own but once i think them they’re mine and immediately being recontextualized with the other thoughts and the new environment if that makes sense… it comes from where it comes from . sorry if this isn’t helpful but i hope it is much love sending reassurance and confidence xxxx🪰🫙🥣🔌📡🪆🪣

i was thinking about hollow mind again and i noticed something kinda weird about the CATs plan to infiltrate Belos’ mind. In order to leave the mindscape - it seems that there needs to be a witch on the outside that can extract the people who went in - we saw this in understanding willow as well - where Luz and Amity couldnt leave when eda was distracted.

So why,,, pray tell, where all 3 planning to go into the mindscape together??

We see Darius ready to break the vial which should activate the spell circle and the three of them sure look close enough to be in the spell circle - so unless they where planing for this to be a suicide mission where they entered Belos’ mind, gather information and where just trapped there forever - there has to have been a 4th member ready to pull them out. We also see later in the episode that where the spell was cast is not the same location as where people return to when removed, so it would make sense to have a 4th member in a secure location where they can be summoned to without problems.

It is possible that this 4th member is one of the original BATs, however it would have put some heavy suspicion on Raine if their 3 co-conspirators where broken out of the conformatorium, so we can assume that they where Broken out during or at least closer to the events of ‘Oh Titan where art thou’

There are however some potentially foreshadowing towards the other coven heads not all being in Belos’ corner, with the big one being this banner from ‘Eda’s requiem’

Out of the 9 covens, 4 of them have scorch marks on them (that being illusion, oracle, abominations and beast keeping) and of those 4 - 2 have already shown to be traitors to the emperor. Could it be possible that the other two are also against him?

Let’s look at oracle first The Oracle school of magic is one of the ones that we know really very little about, both in regards to the types of spells cast with it and their head. At hexside, we see that it largely revolves around the seeing of the future, but can also involve potentially summoning ghosts? The only character we see outside of Hexside who uses it is Odalia Blight - who mostly seems to use it to talk to amity through her necklace - so the passing or communication of information could also be grouped with it. As for the Coven head,,,,,we also dont know a lot about them either. They seem to be a similar type of demon as Kikimora, albeit with more arms , and based on their reaction to the DOU vision in hunting Palisman - they seem largely unfazed by most things. Which definitely makes sense given the future vision and all.

But could they be a traitor? It would make sense that an oracle could figure out whats actually going on about the DOU, and based on their design, they definitely seem like the type of character that knows a lot more that everyone else. The one flaw with them is that - surely with an oracle on your side, you wouldnt need to infiltrate someone’s mind for information. We see Odalia’s oracle magic place information into Amity’s head through the necklace, so surely a more powerful caster could extract information from someones mind without having to literally enter it - so with that theres both evidence for and against them being against the emperor.

Now, to move onto one we know a lot more about: the illusion coven We know the illusion coven is solely focused on creating illusions and that the head of the coven is Adrian Graye Venworth.

Now ive already made a whole post about how vaguely suspicious Adrian is so im not going to go all in depth here - but outside of any theories theres no obvious reason as to why he’d already be against the emperor - especially given his want to please the emperor in Labyrinth runners.

One noticeable thing for him is just the level of attention he’s gotten - having appeared in 5 episodes, being the only coven head besides the CATS to acknowledge hunter in ‘Any sport in a storm’ and having an entire episode dedicated to him as the main antagonist. This could all be setup for something later on, maybe even in season 3 - but for now, just like the oracle head, theres nothing concrete towards him being against the emperor.

Having looked at the banner, there is always the possibility that the scorched Covens are representative of ones that will eventually turn against Belos- as Raine’s area wasnt damaged - with them already working against him.

Stepping away from the banner theory for a moment, there is also one head who there is also potentially evidence for - that being the Potions head.

Just like with Oracle, we know very little about this guy and their school of magic, despite the fact that both eda and lillith where in it, as well as Luz for part of ‘the first day’

my main bit of evidence here is in the set up for the mindscape spell - specifically this little vial that Darius seems to mix with some abomination magic to active - and the potion needed to remove people from the mindscape.

Its not exactly clear how potions magic works, but, given eda’s comments about how brewing it is “gonna be tough without magic” -we have to assume there are some areas of magic involved in it - magic which (as they're branded with their respective covens) Raine, Darius and Eberwolf dont have access to. This means that, in order to get their original potion, they would need to have a potion maker on their side - one which can give a potion the same level of power as titans blood, aka: a very very strong witch.

So there are three coven heads which have potential foreshadowing towards them being against the emperor. It feels kinda like we’re not really going to have time to really explore this in season 2 (or maybe even at all) but it would explain this one plot hole from hollow mind thats been bugging me a bunch

also (and this is more of a goof than evidence) when we see the coven heads in Eda’s Requiem, the potential traitors are all grouped together. even Raine runs off in that direction

Where I’ve Been and the Future of the Comic

I will begin this by saying that I am really sorry to have gone this long without an update. It wasn’t my intention and I know I should have made this a lot sooner.

Quite frankly, things have been so hectic in my life that I got out of rhythm when working on personal projects, such as this comic. I hit some heavily severe depressive episodes and I’m sure I hurt a lot of people around me with some of my outbursts because of it. This isn’t an excuse, just an explination, and is something I have to answer for and work to fix on my own.

Now that I am finding time for personal projects and personal things (I started playing FF14 for instance, im willing to share my username if anyone plays on Primal and wants to play. I started actively writing my original stories and doing original art more. I started posting one of those original stories online as well) I had to re-evaluate some prior projects and what I would drop, keep, and re-imagine.

Now, onto the comic.

Sad to say it, but I will be dropping it. I will keep this blog up as an archive and maybe one day I might come back to it to finish, but as of this moment I don’t have any drive to actually complete the comic as is. I still have my notes, so I will go over the changes I intended to make, which is mostly centered around the characters Elci and Nora Geep.

(Funfact, Nora Geep is seeing new life in one of the original stories Im posting online)

Elci

The thought behind Elci was mostly that she would be used to show Sans and Papyrus that there was a chance at a better life with someone who cared for them. She would have eventually come into contact with Sans and Papyrus which would reveal two things about her to the audience: She had met them before, and she was a prototype Shapeshifter that was to be ‘discareded’ by Gaster and Dr. Felix. Sans would not have a clear memory of this, Papyrus no memory, but Sans would have a faint recollection of her abused shapeshifted form in Gaster’s lab and being wheeled away by Dr. Felix to be ‘disposed of’ (dusted, but she managed to crawl away and survive instead of freezing in the snow, which is when she would have been found and taken to the doctor by the Dog Pack). Elci would have recognized Sans and Papyrus immediately and had a meltdown, which would keep her from revealing this until Sans and Papyrus were taken. She would have been able to tell Grillby and the authorities the door codes and secret lab location as she would still remember what/where they were.

At the end it would also reveal Dr. Felix was her father, and that her mother had dusted prior to the start of the comic. He offered his daughter as an experiment subject due to his own grief on losing his wife and because Gaster needed monster subject and Elci was a rare Chimera-Type (made of 3 or more types of monster: Deer, Abstract, and Reptile). You can see some of these hinted at in Bio’s and also some of the character’s reactions in comic (Elci could sense Sans and Papyrus when she was at Grillby’s, Dogressa is aware she is a Shifter and was nervous when Grillby brought them up, Felix can be seen in the flashback where Dogamy had ripped out his eye, ect).

The last shot I had planned of her would have been her running around with Sans and Papyrus in their shifted forms, finally free of Gaster and Felix’s looming presence in her life.

Nora Geep

Nora is an interesting character in that her influence wasn’t really needed all that much, but made it a bit more believable in terms of some of the background aspects. So her story in the comic was rather limited, but where she had influence was meant to have the most impact.

If you haven’t picked up on the foreshadowing: She is Grillby’s estranged wife. The two had married Pre-War and only seperated some time after being sealed in the Underground. Despite this, they actually aren’t divorced yet and Nora still wears her wedding ring and wedding band (The gold ring and golden scarf she wears in her hair). She took over the role of Archivist from what would have later been revealed to be Seam from Deltarune.

The reason for their split was because of her burn: it would have been revealed that Grillby had accidentally burned her during a PTSD episode and he basically chased her out to protect her. She was against it, but relented more to Asgore and Toriel’s urging since she could barely walk after first recieving the injury. Grillby would have narrated that he opened his restaurant sometime after and that he had some regrets about it, since she had always wanted to open a place where people could relax, enjoy good food, and maybe read a good book or two. (Funfact: In a Deltarune short I was planning for after this she would have opened a book cafe with Grillby in the town)

The reason for her strained relationship with Gaster is because she gave him the logs, books, and research on Shifters that led to Elci’s abuse and Sans and Papyrus’s creation. She was unaware of Sans and Papyrus, but did learn of Elci after she escaped and was horrified that letting him into the archive let this happen. Since she blames herself, she shut herself off completely from Gaster and anything to do with the Research Labs, even when Asgore would ask that she share. This would have come to a head right before Gaster made an attempt to reclaim Sans and Papyrus, as Nora would have found out about them and would have begun making moves to help. Gaster would have taken some of the other cast offs with him and gravely injured Nora, resulting in a lowered security in Snowdin as they would have been looking for Nora’s attacker. (They would not initially known who it was as she was unconcious when found by Berdley and Noelle). She would not have made a fully recovery by the end of the comic, but would have shown up with Berdley and Susie in tow to help Asgore and Gnash against Gaster and the other Skele-dogs.

The final scene I had planning with her was Grillby and her having a heart to heart in Grillby’s about their past and the present. I would have left it open ended on if they got back together or not, but the following seen would have been Asgore welcoming Seam back as the Senior Archivist and Berdley as a newly assigned Junior Archivist to replace him once his training was done.

Noelle would have been revealed to taken over as Royal Scientist and a hint that Alphys would become her apprentice in the future.

Some other things I would have revealed were what happened to the other Skele-dogs afterword (I mentioned it in a post before) but shots of them being found by various characters and taken in, such as the recurring Green One being taken in by Asgore temporarily. There would have been a shot of Flowey at one point as well.

I will answer any lingering questions if anyone has them, I will keep this blog open and will ocntinue to answer questions as they come in. Feel free to reach out.

not a soul eater question, but im curious, do you have any advice on starting a fansite type of blog? ive wanted to make one for an interest of mine for a bit but im not really sure where to start. rlly love the work you put into your sites :D!

Getting into this fan site happened largely out of chance–and a lot of mistakes that requires me to repeat, “Learn from my mistakes.”

I had been on Tumblr long before making this fan site, and my personality used to be far more organized. I used to just reblog anything. Then I noticed the kind of stuff I tended to reblog over and over again and thought, “This isn’t as organized as I’d like.” So I would make a blog dedicated to just that one cartoon or comic or franchise. And then I’d make another one. And another one. And another one, and so on. It was only when I started watching Soul Eater on Toonami and started looking at fan art and reading fanfics that I noticed how much I was reblogging from the series and decided, “Okay, now I need to make a fan site of this”--and not only did that one get more followers than other ones, but it became the franchise and fan site I got most interested in.

So, that would be Advice #1, and it’s the most simple advice I can offer: If you find yourself sharing a lot of stuff from something you like–an anime, a hobby, whatever–make a new blog for it and just start reblogging stuff you see on Tumblr.

And that also would be Advice #2: If you see that your fan site is getting more followers, and if you are getting more and more into it, keep going with that fan site.

Just make a site and start reblogging stuff: it doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. (But if you want it to be more complicated, I do have more advice below.)

So, I got more followers, I got more into the site…and then I screwed up–and this is “learn from my mistakes,” and Advice #3: Don’t take content from other sites and share on Tumblr.

Sharing a link, I think, is fine–it’s not as great as seeing if that DeviantArt, PixIv, or social media artist already has the same art on Tumblr that you can reblog from their Tumblr, but it’s ethical enough. But saving the image, re-posting it on Tumblr, even with credit to the original DeviantArt, PixIv, etc account is not. And that’s not even getting into cultural and legal differences across countries, where you may think that’s fine where you are, but for the creator in their part of the world that opens them up to more problems. So, repeating myself, don’t take content from other sites, even if you are crediting correctly–always reblog when available.

While reblogging and (mistakenly) sharing a lot of Soul Eater content on the Tumblr fan site, I also made sure to tag posts to keep things organized. As I said, I used to be a lot more organized, and I have fallen away from that over the last five or so years–but back then, I would make sure to tag content by character, location, chapter or episode number, whether it was content from the anime, the manga, fan works, and so on. That’s a lot of work, and I don’t recommend it if people are pressed for time. I think people will get a lot out of your fan site just when you reblog content–but I think people do get even more when they know they can click a tag on your fan site and get all the Maka content you have, all the Soul content you have, all the Crona, all the Kid, and so on.

So, that’s Advice #4: Tag content in a way that makes sense for you.

(And since you’re making a fan site for a diverse audience, tag with content warnings whenever possible.)

But be careful when tagging original stuff that you put on the fan site. This is a Soul Eater fan site–so while I’m fine tagging something if it pertains to a certain character (Lord Death), or location (the DWMA), or a concept (demon weapons), I try to avoid #Soul Eater or else I would flood the tag with my stuff.

This also goes in the other direction: as apparent from my posts, I have a complicated regard for Atsushi Ohkubo’s follow up manga, Fire Force, and I really don’t want to pollute the #Fire Force tag with my own complaining. So, I just tag it as “#Dwells Whines About Fire Force” so that anyone who wants to read my complaints can, and anyone who is trying to enjoy Fire Force isn’t getting their positive experience disrupted unnecessarily. If it is something that I think is super-important to discuss (uncomfortable sexualized gaze problems in Fire Force), I’ll tag it with the series; otherwise, if I think it is more petty complaints (how Fire Force differs from Soul Eater in negative ways), I think that’s whining and not as helpful for discussion, so, I don’t tag it #Fire Force.

As you keep making your fan site, maybe you want to make your own content. I don’t draw much at all; I used to write a few fan fics; and I used to do a lot of work on the Soul Eater Wiki, I used to make a lot of GIFs and screen caps, and I used to make a lot of photoshopped images from Soul Eater.

So, Advice #5: Contribute however you can and want to.

Maybe you want to add your own illustrations, writing, and research–go ahead and do it, it can only help add something to the discussion. Share a doodle, kiseake art, a sculpture, a cosplay you made–whatever you feel comfortable doing and without compromising your sense of safety, privacy, or anonymity. Share that cringey fanfic you wrote if you don’t mind the responses it may get (just be ethical in what you do, given the characters you are writing about and the situations you are representing). Write that post where you analyze that really obscure detail, or tie in something you saw in an episode to a book you read, a film you saw, or a lecture you heard in your high school or college science, literature, or history class.

As long as you are being ethical, logical, not harassing, and not lying, you’re helping add to appreciation to the thing you’re a fan of. Even if people don’t interact with what you made, you added to the fandom. Or, if those people are hostile and trollish at you, well, that’s on them, that’s not your problem, they are just awful people, so screw them, do what makes you happy and block their accounts or turn off anonymous responses.

And that also leads to Advice #6: Do it only when you can and only if it’s still fun.

This fan site has fallen into hibernation more than once. It’s not that I wasn’t still online and wasn’t still checking for messages and responses. But when time is limited, and mental health is drained, or other things get in the way that you have to take care of for your health, your financial security, and taking care of your family and friends, don’t make a fan site a higher priority than it needs to be. The fan site will continue as long as the platform is still up and you haven’t deleted the account or been hacked or banned–you can always come back and add more to the site later when you want to.

I’ll stop here for now. If I have more advice, I’ll add it in reblogs. And I appreciate any contributions from others who have made fan sites. Thanks again for the question!

Turning history of science into a comic adventure

The Covid-19 pandemic taught us how complex the science and management of infectious disease can be, as the public grappled with rapidly evolving science, shifting and contentious policies, and mixed public health messages.

The purpose of scientific communication is to make the complexity of such topics engaging and accessible while also making sure the information conveyed is scientifically accurate. With that goal in mind, one MIT team recently transformed themselves into time-traveling comic book characters, in an effort to convey the fascinating history of infectious disease science.

The multimedia project, “A Paradigm Shift in Infectious Diseases,” follows its creators — and the story’s protagonists — on a journey through scientific history. MIT Associate Professor Lydia Bourouiba and cancer-researcher-turned-graphic-artist Argha Manna travel across the world, leaping from one century to the next to learn about paradigm shifts in science from philosophers of science and to meet scientific luminaries and other scholars as they changed the understanding of infectious diseases and their transmission.

“Our goal with this project was to communicate effectively about the scientific method,” says Bourouiba, director of MIT’s Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory, part of the Fluids and Health Network; a core faculty member of the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES); and an associate professor in the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and of Mechanical Engineering. “During crises like the Covid-19 pandemic, we saw a lot of confusion and misunderstanding from the public that stemmed, in part, from a lack of knowledge about how science actually evolves.”

The project was exhibited in MIT’s Rotch Library Gallery last month and was the subject of an event at the Hayden Library that explored broader questions about the scientific method and scientific literacy. The authors are currently in talks with publishers to create a comic book from the story, and Bourouiba is teaching a related class, HST.537/1.063/2.25 (Fluids and Diseases), this spring.

The exciting history of infectious disease research

Bourouiba pitched the idea for the exhibit to the MIT Center for Art, Science and Technology (CAST) in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic. CAST agreed to fund the project, which also received support from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, IMES, and the MIT Libraries.

“We wanted to use visual art in the form of comics, which allows us to convey multilayered messages, with the two protagonists traveling through time and locations to try to understand the processes that led to the different understandings of infectious diseases and how they are transmitted,” Bourouiba explains.

Like all good science communication, the project tells a story. The comic starts with Bourouiba and Manna discussing how infectious diseases spread. They read about experiments by William F. Wells in the 1930s, focusing on the size of exhaled droplets and how it determines how fast they evaporate. And they learn about the origins of germ theory, which after much pushback and debate, was eventually established by Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch toward the end of the 19th century. Soon, Bourouiba and Manna are transported back in time to come face to face with the subjects of their study. The adventure brings them to ancient Greece, Egypt, Italy, and eventually back to MIT — but in the 1940s — where Harold “Doc” Edgerton conducted pioneering work on stroboscopic photography, which could capture images of moving droplets in previously unprecedented detail.

“Through the adventure of the protagonists in this comics, one learns that the evolution of ideas on infectious diseases is far from solely a school of medicine effort,” Bourouiba says. “Instead, it involved, from its start, physicists, ecologists, engineers, and modelers, in addition to those managing public good, eventually establishing public health structures.”

Through it all, the audience learns about various “paradigm shifts” in science that mark progress and put in perspective contemporary shifts in our understanding of infectious disease.

The power of science communication

A panel at the Hayden Library served to launch the exhibit and included Professor Joel Gill, associate professor of art and chair of the Department of Visual Narrative at Boston University; Edward Nardell, professor of global health and social medicine at Harvard Medical School; Carl Zimmer, New York Times journalist and author; John Durant, then-director of the MIT Museum and adjunct professor in the MIT Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS); and Robin Scheffler, associate professor in MIT STS.

The panel discussed shifts in ideas about science and how we communicate them using media like videos, books, and comics.

“We need to think about our audience, we need to know the audience we’re talking to, and we need to be prepared to listen as well as to speak to the audience,” Durant said. “We also need to find ways of moving outside of the circle of people who think the way we do.”

In Scheffler’s talk, he showed examples throughout history of scientists using art and artists using science.

“By thinking about the slippery-ness between [art and science] and having a greater sense that there isn’t a hard and fast line to draw in terms of paradigm shifts in science, I think we can all have a more empathetic and practical approach in how we communicate and talk about the nature of changing science and changing understandings of disease,” Scheffler said.

Ultimately, the comic exemplifies an idea by one of its central characters, Doc Edgerton. The famed educator once said, “The trick to education is to teach people in such a way that they don’t realize they’re learning until it’s too late.”

i know it's not completely their fault (our government has been infested with libertarian ghouls for so long and they keep defunding/undermining public services) but ugh usps is such a frustrating service to deal with. like their website is horrible and if you're trying to find where the fuck a piece of mail is, it just leads you around and never lets you actually contact a person about it.

i'm annoyed because i put patreon reward packages in the mail on the THIRD and at least one of them still hasn't even shipped (or appears not to have been so it hasn't been scanned) and they've all been really delayed and the usps site is like "your only recourse is to contact the original shipper" and i'm like FAM I AM THE ORIGINAL SHIPPER AND YALL ARE MAKING ME LOOK FLIGHTY WHERE THE FUCK IS THIS PACKAGE (which has irreplaceable original art in it? like yeah i can make this person another painting if need be but it means the original one will be lost. i do have scans but a print is not the same) !?!? it's at least insured but i'm sure they'll fight me if i am eventually able to put a claim in (i don't even want a claim, i just want it to have been scanned/sent to where it was supposed to be sent)

also they keep making me input the tracking number and then telling me i can't submit an inquiry to find the mail until it receives another scan which is the whole reason i'm pretty sure it's lost??

(i had to go to another post office location to drop these off and while im not positive it's a factor- could also be that it's november and the holiday capitalism machine is starting to rev up which always slows the us mail a lot- i am also never going to that other post office again lol)
