boy i dont know if i should be pained that you asked this question ( I Am A Bad Teacher) or glad ( i actually have something to say)

so if you dont know, im a very new sonic fan. i've been drawing sonic stuff since august. Before this i had never drawn sonic before. like drew exclusively human people. this means that learning to draw sonic was a learning experience for me for sure.

so assuming you were asking for advice, im putting it all under a read more since it is a little longer than i intended. tee hee (also sorry if the advice is a little too basic! this is from when i first started drawing sonic stuff so)

now before i start like. i am not a professional by any means, i don't have the secrets of art, etc etc. you decide what you like in your art and my guidelines might not always apply to you, if at all. your art style is yours first, and you pick the rules.

alright! the first thing i had to figure out (and tbh still am) is proportions! having mostly drawn humans and having developed my entire art style around drawing people, sonic proportions threw me for a loop. i was almost. ALMOST tempted to try to adapt with what i already had.

the issue with that is that human proportions and sonic proportions are wildly different like. these are not compatible.

the proportions for sonic are, naturally, very cartoony. trying to give them more realistic proportions can make everything feel off and well... think about the og model for the sonic movie. overall when i draw sonic character (this varies!!) the head is either larger or equal to the torso. hand and feet are a oversized and eyes are. big. the short of this is study the proportions of a character! see how certain part of their body compare and don't be afraid to try a new style!

another thing i learned is for drawing their. uh. muzzles? face circles? idk. the part where their sily mouths and noses go. that part. the basic shape of them is like. an oval with three bumps on the top. like this:

when i first tried drawing sonic i noticed this right away and. stuck to it. too much. but it doesn't always look like that! there are a lot of things that can change its shape such as perspective, expression and, obviously, the character.

perspective can mess with how prominent those bumps are, as well as the shape of the oval, based on the angle.

expression will push and stretch this shape with the mouth (thinnk about how your cheeks move when you move your mouth!)

characters can have different shapes as well!! knuckles muzzle (the big bump) is more prominent when i draw him, because his snout is longer. i also draw tails with little sharper of a bump, not that its super noticeable

this is a super specific thing to talk about but im saying because it applies everywhere. nothing is going to be 100% static so have specific rules about how something looks isnt going to help you with drawinf the characters in new and dynamic poses. their eyes, bodies, ears, etc etc etc all move and are affected by movement. its a lot to think about at first, but work on understanding it all one at a time, then practice it in combo!

finally, since this is already so long, the tried and true and frankly mildly annoying piece of advice:

practice!! give yourself time to adapt to drawing the characters!! just by drawing them you'll see the way it looks evolve over time, from habit and from integrating new details and new ways of approaching it.

for reference, one of the earliest drawings of sonic in my sketchbook (Aug. 13) and one i did a few hours ago!

these were done ehhhhh 2 months ago????? has it been that much already?

point is: these are very different drawings, which comes from experience. i experimented a lot and also have years of drawing experience under my belt, so it came pretty quickly for me. its still not perfect, but via studying the characters (or spending all my time staring at silver idk its the same thing to me) and pulling at details from styles i like, i definitely have been and will continue to improve!

i hope this is helpful in some way, to how you draw the characters and how you approach art in general!! i also hope that this was clear enough guidance since it was just me talking about things i did for the entire time lmfao.

I was watching some how to draw videos on YouTube yesterday.

Everyone should do this, by the way, even if you feel very confident in your work; you can always learn new ideas from other people. I've learned pretty basic things that I just had not thought about before that have totally changed my perspective and the way I draw.

However, if you do watch these sorts of videos, that does not mean that everything you hear is 100% right. And I don't mean that they are necessarily wrong either.

As an example, I was watching one about perspective and the face. I think being sort of sarcastic and negative was apart of this guys shtick. However, he was talking about how one piece of art was bad because it was an almost side profile, but you could see the whole eye as if you were looking at it from a 3/4 sort of view.

Yes, the perspective was off, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing. As an example, check out Ancient Egyptian art. I wish I could remember the term right now, but they painted people in a side profile view and still showed the eye as if you were looking straight on. Basically, they would paint the human body so that features and body parts would be painted from their most recognizable angle. That's just something that really intrigues me about Ancient Egyptian art.

Now, back to the painting this guy was talking about - if the artist had indeed painted the subject with the proper perspective, yes it would look more realistic, but I really dont think the painting would have been as striking.

I know that like... its not good to use the excuse "thats just my style" when painting something and the anatomy is super off, as everyone should learn those things to help them improve. But the anatomy or anything doesnt have to be 100% perfect and accurate all the time to make good art.

Creating art isn't black and white. There's all the colors in between, too.

Hi, I didn't really know who to reach out for this question, but do you have any tips on how to find your own unique fashion style? I'm not really looking to hop on popular clothing trends on social media e.g. eboy/girl or cottagecore, so I'm not exactly sure where to start! I come to consult you because I've seen some of your posts and you look very well versed in fashion and you seem to know your own personal style. My wardrobe is very outdated and I would like to update it to reflect the truest expression of myself. Thank you 😊 You don't have to answer this if you don't feel like doing so btw 😅

EEEE more fashion asks i love these thank you!!!! warning this got a lil (very) long so its under the cut :^)

so first and foremost the most important part about curating your own style is to learn more about your body and what flatters/doesnt flatter it. it's learning some basic fashion 'rules' pertaining to proportions, cuts, etc. there are plenty of resources on this if you dont know where to start (kibbe body test, video, video) but keep in mind this step has nothing to do with your weight!!!! i could talk wayyy more about this but at the end of the day, some clothing is just more flattering for specific body shapes - that doesnt mean you cant wear something that isnt perfectly flattering, but knowing your body and knowing what flatters it will make you understand your own style and help guide the pieces you buy. fashion 'rules' arent necessarily meant to be followed, but just understood so that 'breaking' them is a conscious choice. (it also really helped with my insecurities???? like this step is basically recognizing that its not your body thats unflattering, its the clothing, if that makes sense???)

also remember that every 'style' works for every body type. i.e if you want to be a 60s vibe but youre too curvy for shift dresses, there are plenty of clothes in a similar style that would look great on you <3 basically, if you dont like the way a piece looks on you, you can still achieve the same vibe with a different article of clothing thats more flattering. but also umm.... you can just wear the unflattering thing if you want LOL if it makes you happy... then it becomes your own controlled decision <3 live love laugh follow your heart

okay. now that you have that out of the way. there are a million ways to develop a sense of style, and no particular order in which i recommend them. what i love doing is creating pinterest boards for the spring/summer or fall/winter seasons and just filling them with pieces i would wear in a perfect world. i dont mean like cottagecore aesthetic boards, just boards full of runway looks and clothing pngs that i like. i also love making little outfits for characters which can influence my own style. everyone thinks of their style differently; i think of my own outfits as little vignettes with narratives behind them, but other people are more concerned with just wearing things they think are pretty, other people view it as an expression of art or their identity, and other people just want to feel comfortable!!! its all up to you and what youre drawn to!!

one thing that tan france mentioned once was to go online window shopping by going onto the website for a brand you like (regardless of whether its affordable or realistic!) and just adding things to your cart that youre interested in. dont worry about how expensive they are or anything, and when youre done, remove all the items you like the least. and then keep reviewing and removing until you have just a handful of really nice items you really like, and keep doing this with other brands until you can identify common threads between the pieces you like. you dont have to buy them!! in fact maybe its better if you dont!!! and the websites dont have to be like zara or h&m ... go on balmain or chanel if you want, play pretend and have fun!!

re: the last bullet point, i think a big turn off for people in terms of fashion is the idea that you need to wear something palatable and 'appropriate.' its like looking at a runway and thinking "its nice, but i would never wear that in real life." but honestly????? in a perfect world i would be wearing full gowns to the supermarket!!!! if your ideal style is imaginative but unattainable, your style in practice will be a microcosm of it. basically... dream big... dont be afraid to 'overdress' if its what you like!! one of the best pieces of advice i ever got was from my aunt, who offered to by me a plastic tiara. i asked her when i was ever going to wear it irl, and she just looked at me and said "??? you can wear it whenever you want to!!" so true!!! wear a tutu to mcdonalds. wear a bedazzled tux to prom. who cares

accessories, nail polish, hair, jewelry, perfume and makeup goes a long way in developing style. i dont wear a ton of makeup, but just putting some color on my cheeks achieves a kind of sunkissed lovestruck vibe that i strive for. i paint my nails red because i think its chic or bright colors so they contrast with a toned down outfit. even wearing no accessories is an accessory in itself. accessorizing (or specifically not accessorizing) is like adding texture to an outfit imo

anything that advises you about 'absolutely necessary essentials everyone needs' is entirely wrong. there is no one size fits all; i.e everyone says you need one good pair of denim jeans, but i havent worn jeans in two years!!! an essential for ME is a pair of neutral wool shorts, but an essential for another person could be a thick knit sweater or for another person, a flannel. the idea that everyone needs a 'little black dress' or a 'basic white t shirt' is preposterous. YOUR essentials depend entirely on YOUR style. a pair of denim jeans is useless if you hate wearing jeans!!!!

as for my personal style, im mostly influenced by movies, books, songs, characters, feelings, colors, high fashion, and costumes. ultimately, you should worry less about what you want to be and worry more about what you already like. every piece i have kind of plays into some narrative ive constructed, or otherwise theyre all special to me :) if you want to update your wardrobe, dont feel the need to over consume fast fashion (or any fashion for that matter) to do so. if you take it slow and buy pieces you really love, every item will have a story and you'll begin to develop a more stable internal style and they'll last longer :)

Look I'm not one of those people who believe Kishimoto decided to have Hinata and Naruto end up in the middle part of Shippuden. I believe he decided in the very last arc but he wanted to sound smart so he said he decided earlier on. Otherwise, they obviously would have more scene together. In Shippuden, they have only three scenes together ; when Naruto came back, the pain attack and the neji death scene. That's it. In the original Naruto, they probably have less than ten canon scenes not including fillers.

So I'm sorry I'm one of those who wasn't convinced by The Last. They literally had a basic villain go after Hinata who was cringe btw (the villain). They gave Hinata op powers which she doesn't have in the novel 👀. Despite having op powers, they made her the damsel in distress. Very "The hero saves the princess" cliche. Again, to justify them being together. I mean Naruto can't differentiate his love for ramen and romantic love so how??? He was just being nice to Hinata just like he does to everyone. He stood up for her just like he does for everyone.

Don't get me started on the Sakura Sasuke relationship 🤣. Cringe. They never knew each other. The whole Sakura's love for Sasuke saved him doesn't make sense. They spent barely a year in their genin year before sasuke left. Sasuke tried to kill Naruto and Sakura multiple times. Then at the end of the war, Kishimoto tried to do the "oh they have such a deep understanding between each other" which comes off as cringey. He gets her pregnant then leaves for years. She's literally a single mom who's broke.

Every relationship in Naruto is so cringey and forced except shikatemari. Kishimoto should've focused on the main story and fixed his potholes and leave the ending open.

Naruto would not have been perfect but at least it would've been remembered for staying true to its vision but instead it's remembered for cringey relationships, dumbass villain (except pain and madara) and a story that lost its core which is a shame coz I used to love Naruto. I was inspired by its messages but now....

I mean, Naruto in general is a mess, not just the ships if we're being realistic. Alot of plotholes, rushed endings, this and that, the w a r a r c, Kaguya, the way they rushed Boruto ehhh. Honestly, getting into Naruto is literally my biggest regret of 2020 :"DD

Im an NH shipper as you can tell by my hotmess of a blog but i fully respect your opinion and understand your point of view. I also know a bunch of nh stans who have their complaints with their development. I wish Kishi gave more attention to his female cast really, thats all I fucking ask. If he did that one single basic thing, then maybe the endgame relationships wouldnt have been an asspull and theyd be given propper screentime with their love interest, both Sakura and Hinata. The Last tbh i think the writers played it safe and stuck to the whole Naruto shounen vibe thingy, so im not surprised it was plotted that way. Typical cliché shounen movie.

But does that bother me? No! The Last was a mess, their development was shit, they definitely needed more screentime but hey at the end of the day theyre cute as fuck, we have that kiss scene, flirting scenes, a shit ton of official art, three kids, Seiki's gif :33 and a whole ass arc for their wedding all that for just a shounen anime so eh. Compensates for it i guess xD theyre not toxic, unhealthy or whatnot. Theyre wholesome, soft and vanilla as fuck and exactly what i need in my hectic life rn. No drama, just two kind souls who are adorable as heck and theyre dynamic means so much to me and I will love them until i shall leave this earth.

Sasuke and Sakura on the other hand eeeehhhh i can see why people like them. Sasuke's hot, he's your typical hot bad boy aad Sakura's hot and pretty too. Basic blue and pink trope. Aside from their canon interactions, fans have all the opportunity to play around with their dynamic but for me, its just sooo basic and so hetero and can easily appeal to any 16 yr old teenage girl, no wonder it has an active fanbase on twt and---- AM I MAKING ANY SENSE? AHDBAJJE LIKE ITS SO-- BASIC, your usual bad boy x pretty girl trope that you get to read in YA and coming of age novels. Not only that, but going back to canon, they have too many negative interactions for me to like them together :p The least Sakura can do is put down her own foot and yell at him for not contacting them for god knows how long. who is your favourite member on the smp?

Look, I love them all but these have a special place in my heart.

Quackity, Slimecicle (I am fully aware he just joined but I still love him), Schlatt, Tubbo, Eret, AweSamdude, and Ponk.

They're just great in and out of character and just have comforting vibes.

when did you first start watching the smp and what made you get into it?

I gotten in during the Pogtopia era since it took me a while to get access to the streams.

I mainly gotten in with the Sad-ist War animatics along with me trying to catch up on Quackity's VODS. Just someone that I was already familiar with being an easier shift into story and learning others through him

what is your favourite part about watching the smp?

Just watching everyone interact with other and just seeing the plot progress in real time. Its literally just dnd but with extra steps but I enjoy it so much

The improv that they all do is amazing and how everyone have different approaches to their characters makes my writer's side so happy with dissecting everything.

What piece of cursed lore is your favourite

That Wilbur canonically fucked a fish and Philza canonically fucked a Samasung fridge and just seeing the fanbase try to change into something that will at least make a bit more sense.

Im included in this, I basically joined the side that has Sally being a mermaid shapeshifting pirate. Mainly because of pirate Fundy

Who is your favorite duo on the smp

Slimecicle and Ranboo: They're the same person but in different fonts, you can convince me otherwise

Schlatt and Quackity: They managed to be super funny together with all of the jokes and balanced with making a very realistic abusive relationship work. It was always fun seeing them flirt with each other for a joke then get hit with whiplash when canon comes in to remind me that this isnt healthy

Tubbo and Tommy: They're two dumbasses who share the same braincell but then they constantly lose it and Tubbo mainly has custody of it

Wilbur and Schlatt: I just enjoy seeing Schlatt messing with Wilbur and occasionally flirts with him to get Wilbur more pissed off

Who are your comfort streamers

Quackity and Slimecicle are comfort streamers

Eret, Fundy, and AweSamdude are my comfort people (meaning I dont watch them as much but I find comfort in their presence. And the other two are also under this category)

Who is your favorite character

Quackity due to how complex his character is and yet how it looks so simple

Schlatt because is just a villian who knows how to play the game without getting caught

Tubbo, watching him trying to be hopeful with everything destroy around him and he just slowly become used to everything going wrong

AweSamdude because he is just trying his best to be a father figure others and I just got family issues

Who do you think the best actor(s) on the smp

Imma skip over the ones that we all already said and get into the ones that dont get enough praise

Quackity: Just how he managed to make his character seem so basic but in reality its really complex. And just seeing the shift from him being a chaotic force of nature to being a serious character that is trying his best to reach something that has been hanging over his head is just *chefs kiss* and he always delivers amazing lines on the spot.

BadBoyHalo: He is doing great right now, even though he is a bit rusty with starting he still manages to get into character and stay in character the entire time. When slowly easing in, you can tell its a bit forced but once he finds his footing, he knows how to deliver his lines.

AweSamdude: His entire bit where he was getting rescued from the egg fucking hurt. How he sounded weak from the entire thing and tired to where he just wanted to rest was so well. And I know he can act more energetic when he was accidentally dragged into playing a cop during Quackity's and Bad's date

Fundy: You guys need to give him more praise for his acting because he is fucking amazing at it. The little touches to how he voice when speaks is so good along with his body language in game. He knows what he's fucking doing and I love him for that. And when he snapped, it made complete sense if you payed attention to his character

I didnt add Ranboo because he's automatically at the top section due to him being a dnd player. Same goes to Slimecicle even though he hasnt acted yet. I dont make the rules. You play dnd, you know how to act

What are your favorite quotes

I dont have favorite quotes, just dialog heavy scenes.

Before Doomsday, Quackity going to take his horse far away from L'Manberg, it being the one thing he cares about. It was just so good

The entire Schlatt and Quackity argument in front of the white house

The meeting between Schlatt and Quackity with Schlatt yelling out to him in a taunting way to where Tommy and Quackity are trying to figure out what happened to the tnt. I constantly rewatch it to feel the adrinaline pumping to feel something

Wilbur's slow descend into insanity and talking to Tommy. Just showing his paranoia and fears consuming him, him projecting his fears into Tommy as an attempt of manipulation, and his hero complex shift into villian one

Schlatt's winning speech of him projecting it as something that was bound to happen no matter what. The amount of charisma and confidence that was in his voice as I was watching Tommy hiding underground in fear was just a perfect scene

Tommy's argument with Dream when everyone is protecting Tommy. Its the small details of Tommy taunting Dream to kill him, knowing he wont no matter what. Him telling everyone to protect Tubbo and everyone listening without hesitation.

The debate that Quackity and Dream had for like 11 or 14 minutes. All of that was completely unprompted unscripted, it was just so satisfying seeing someone stand up against Dream for the first time and actually beating him. Sure it was in a verble conflict but it still counts as a defeat

Im sorry, but all of the Jackbox stream. You need a specific group of people to play together in order to actually make it funny and keeping the energy throughout the entire thing.

After a bit later, everyone has a tendency of pandering to the audience and repeat jokes. They managed to beat jokes to the ground faster than Tiktok AND Twitter.

Dont get me started with DreamTeam being in there. They're funny in thier own rights but the shipping jokes get so unfunny so quick and they dont know how bounce off of others well. The only exception to this is when Quackity, Velvet, and Ant were playing with Sapnap and Dream. And thats because they decided to mess with the straight white guys into accidently saying offensive shit and seeing those two suffer with trying tiptoe around was so amusing

Whats something about the smp fandom thay makes you sad

This doesnt get me sad, just frustrated and its mostly towards dsmptok and dsmptwt but sometimes this fandom doesnt fucking know how to analyze characters. Like when everyone jumped on Tubbo on being the bad guy when he was a kid trying to use old tatics that knows that worked before and stand up for himself

How when one person decides to do something that they believe is right, everyone just throws the term villian arc around

When one person does one good thing the suddenly everyone accepts into them being good and not ever looking into it.

For fucks sakes, I saw people keep saying that Quackity was turning into Dream or Wilbur and I just sat there being confused on how they conntected those dots that were in different books.

Its so frustrating to read through. But here on dsmpblr, you guys actually understand character analysis, are able to critique them and able to love whoever you enjoy.

Another thing is how this fanbase really puts everyone on a pedestal or objectify them. Just completely forgetting that they're human and treat the streamer as a character. Like, yeah they're playing up a persona whenever they're making content but theres a difference and you shouldn't hold them up like that.

You cant use the argument of "They're young, they dont know any better", when I first entered my first fandom (I was like 11/12), I fully understood that theres a boundary between me and the creator. What they are on screen is a persona but they're still human and I should treat them as such. Its just something that bugs me and its unnerving to see whenever people start getting wierd about it

Final bit is just how the twitch chat acts. They all force the streamer to follow the 'main' plot of it being Tommy or Techno or whoever the fandom chooses to have a favorite, completely ignoring the fact that they are their own character. No one wants to meta game because where is the fun in that but the fucking chat gets so annoying when the streamer goes against fanfavorite of the week. It drains the fun of it being multiple pov's and different characters.

When Slimecicle was barely starting stream I saw so many people spam "Go with Ranboo" and not let him even get into lore first. I hated that I knew it was coming but it was still so fucking frustrating seeing them try to boss him around. Please just let people live outside of the 'main' plot, not everything revolves around your favorites. Now shut the fuck up and let them play

What about the smp fandom that makes you happy?

The people that create art, animatics, theories, playlist, or write oneshots

All of you creators are great and deserve so much more respect then what the fandom gives you because jesus fucking christ they're all so fucking rude. You guys are the ones that are carrying this fandom on your backs and I fucking respect yall for that

writing isnt rigid.

There is no ‘good’ writing, there is no ‘bad’ writing.

What I’m about to say I’m saying more for myself then anyone else, god knows I need some sort of motivation to do anything, but I want to make my point clear anyway because maybe somebody else needs it too. (I’ll also say here this is more about writing as a hobby- Professional writers, I...don’t know what to say, but good luck getting your story published!! That sounds sarcastic but I promise it’s not!)

Writing is an art form, just as much as music and sculpting and painting, or any other form of art for that matter.

All of those things are fluid; Songs have different notes and rhythms. Maybe an artist uses lighter colors than another, or a different type of shading. You wouldn’t point at a drawing somebody worked hard on and say, ‘It’s bad because it doesn’t have gradients.’ And you wouldn’t say that, because having a gradient doesn’t define a good drawing.

The same logic applies to writing. Maybe you write happier things over sad, or choose to characterize somebody different then somebody else, or even canon- That! doesn’t! make! it! bad!

The trick to all of this is learning is that there is no way to actually define a good or bad piece of writing; “It gets less kudos then x fic from x fandom.” Well, someone else’s enjoyment of something doesn’t define how good it is, just like how somebody disliking speedy rollercoasters doesn’t mean the foundation (as in, the literal metal of the ride itself) of the rollercoaster is breaking. Something can still be good and be widely hated.

“Well,” you say, “I messed up my grammar in x spot, and/or I don’t really understand it.” Well, if you already know how you messed up, then it’s a simple ‘try not to make the same mistake again.’ And if you don’t really understand it? That’s fine. I’ve gone back on the writing I wrote when I was ten and could barely sit through even a paragraph; It’s okay to still be in that phase now, to still be learning how it works. Should you try to work on it? Sure. But don’t get so lost in the grammar that you lose your original goal (unless it’s just a drabble for grammar purposes,) because the goal is much more important then the minor mistakes made along the way. Just try to figure out what you think is right; if you’re really worried, you can always ask somebody to proofread it (chances are there’s more people willing than you think there are! If you don’t know anyone, public discords are a great place to ask and check.)

I’m going to go back to comparing writing to drawings; We’ve all seen drawings that made us go “Ew, that’s horrible.” You’ve made those kinds of drawings, too. But, every artist and art tutorial I’ve ever seen or met says that you learn as you practice, you aren’t perfect in the beginning and you shouldn’t expect to be. The same applies to writing- It isn’t like say, math, where you can get it more or less right the first try. It’s like learning how to draw a straight line, or an accurate circle- or on a bigger picture scale, say, how to draw a realistic pose, or create an interesting design. You won’t get it perfect the first try. You won’t get it perfect the hundredth, either, because it’s impossible to be perfect-

But if it can’t be perfect, then it’s hard to get it wrong.

..Anyway, I could go on more long examples, but this is already kind of long for a tumblr post. :’D If you really read through all this, I applaud and thank you! I’ll give you a little secret for reading so long- this all comes from personal things I think I need and/or needed to hear. I haven’t written actively in three or four years, and I’m trying to get back into it- if you are too, and even if your not, thanks for walking down the same path as me, even if only for a bit.

TLDR; Writing isn’t math. It’s more creative than math.

Getting paid £4.5 for a colored whole body character based on a SPECIFIC anime, only to complain:

Im not confident with my art but what I AM SURE OF is that the piece I made looks like a legit character from the anime not some cheap cartoon network knock off like this:

If you wanted it to actually see resemblance to realistic face, then maybe go for semi-realistic art. The requested anime you want has such an iconic and specific style to it that i feel dirty having to make changes.

Idk if its me being salty or just tired but gad damn it. Im barely getting 10% of what the package is worth. 3 to 5 hours of work, making sure to stay true to the anime's style, looking for references on how that anime does certain features on faces, only to say "sorry it doesnt look like the one from before... it was perfect this isnt" then maybe we werent watching the same anime...

Hi! I was wondering if it was really necessary to draw in realism if you want to go into illustration ( mostly drawing cartoons). I'm a junior in high school wanting to go to art school and I'm high key freaking out about it.

Hello there lovely!!! absolutely not!!! It isnt needed. HOWEVER. When you apply to college, they want to see a range in your portfolio. That is quite possibly the most helpful advice i could ever fucking give. Now, that can be in varying styles, etc. But I HIGHLY recommend working on pieces done from life.

Most colleges put you in ‘foundation’ classes. I know some are changing, but for an example, I attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and we had a ‘foundation year’ (freshman). We took Drawing, Painting, Sculptural Forms (wood shop, sculpture, working 3d), EMAC (electronic media. so, photography, photoshop, etc etc), Elements of Visual thinking (where we were encouraged to work in different medias that we may be uncomfortable with), and then academic classes. Different colleges handle this differently and I know at MICA, it’s changed.

They do this because they want you to be able to have a range. So I went into college for graphic design, but the first year I changed to painting (after HATING painting) and I never fucking went back.

Wow, i just realized i might be scaring you. DONT BE SCARED LOL!!!!

I just very VERY much suggest working in different medias and tinkering with styles. you’re only a junior so you really don’t have to worry. you have PLENTY of time. But I would add pieces you’ve done from life. I think thats very important. also, keep in mind, working from life does NOT MEAN REALISM!!!! I’ve had professors that DESPISE realism. (i was very much that way. i STILL hate realism LMFAOOOOOOOOO literally a realistic digital artist wowowow tiara). It just simply means using life as reference! you can let your style run wild!!!

with all that said, keep in mind that they want you to have a good base. (if you don’t, youll most likely learn it in college. no worries. but it is very very helpful and will give you a boost when applying). So they want you to understand the basics of drawing from life, etc. They typically do not want to see just one thing.

And I REALLY dont want to harp on anime, or scare you if thats what you lean towards, but i think it is VERY VERY important to say that if anime is what you work in, they want you to have your own style or your own twist.

ADDITIONALLY, SOME OF THE BEST ILLUSTRATORS I KNOW CANNOT DRAW ‘REALISTICALLY’. THEY CANNOT DO WHAT I DO, JUST AS I CAN NNNEEVVERRRR DO WHAT THEY DO. SOME OF THE BEST ILLUSTRATORS AT MICA ARE LIKE THAT. SO. NO. WORRIES. REALISM DOES NOT EQUATE WORKING FROM LIFE!!!!!!!

Here is an example of my roommate from college Ann Xu’s work. I think its a perfect example of working from life, but having your own style outside of realism.

Oh man. I really had to think about this haha! I could use some tips myself but i thought up some random little tips that help me when drawing the skeleboys :D

im gonna put it below though cuz who knows how long this will get?

This is probably a given but practice anatomy and study the skeleton. i should really do this more XD, but when drawing a human pose try to imagine how the bones look inside the body. I hope that makes sense lmao! What i mean is it is really helpful to think about how the bones in our body move and act when drawing them in poses.

This doesnt have to be perfect of course, it is just helpful pft, i certainly dont do this as often as id like.

I just kinda showed how i go from a sketch to the line art drawing? I dont know if that is helpful but i will say that doing the initial sketch in a lighter softer color is pretty helpful to me. ( i know this isnt to drawing the brothers but i mean its kinda just an “in general” tip ya know?)

Also, for sans head. You know? Like, the top round part?

this is actual torture, dont try and get this in one go. You can take this in pieces. I mean, im sure there are people out there that can do it in one stroke but i am not one of them.

Something else that really helps me out is using references of actual skeletons. Of course how i draw the bros arent hyper realistic like the refs i use, but it is really helpful to see how and where the bones are structured on a real skeleton.(This is like what i was saying in the begining)

Placement, shape, and movement of real bones is important to take into account when drawing any of the skelebros. Sometimes in my sketches i include bones (typically for me its the ribs and pelvis i draw in) to see how the clothes will fall over them.

Turns out its a helluva mess when i start messing beyond flat colors!! Might be a sign to not do so much again (but yet .. practice to get to where im one day happy??)

Like ive done as much as i know how to do at this point in time to the portraits (still gratuitously bloody shame on me :') ) oh except for a background bc WHAT does one DO for a character shoulders up portrait background??? Settled for now on a gradient old school photo style lmao

I like the fix it one as is, a lot (but also i liked the lineart for the portraits better i think) and idk, imngonna try give it a light bit of shadows and lights, maybe step away from a lot of blending bc i think i think thats where i went wrong on the other one

Like, they look fine, but they also look. Meh. Like ive used too much blur tool (i havent, i tried using kritas wet brush thing and it looks....ok close up but the effect is no good when zoomed out like posting size APPARENTLY) and its all noncommittally washy.

Am i gonna 'render' them a third time??? Do i have the mental strength?? Bc i think maybe trying for something not so, "realistic" could do me better, like a little more cell shady. But also i dont?? I dont know how to cell shade? I dont watch anime or cartoons v much and my style isnt that cartoony or clean lined?

Maybe on the fix it i can try a more....... Conservative and less blended shade/highlights? (And if i like it/learn smth new go back and re re do the portraits same style) I also just. Idk. How does one make it not look so. Flat and meh?? Im doing basic color stuff ok i think, ive got a bit of texture but its still? Eh???

Honestly i could just post them and move on but i dunno, i have the energy to problem solve a lil bit so why not?? (Not tonight. Im gonna sleep on this all)

I wanna try and become one of those cool artists who post multiple fun things yknow, like u get inspired and can draw it beginning to post in one evening! Im probably way over thinking and pushing myself to some standard of unrealistic perfection i have for myself...

(also i like thumbnail doodled out like, all these things i wanna draw for a really nice fic i read and even after editing some i have like 8 bits i wanna draw?? 4 as like a mini comic bc i havent done one since i was a child and i think itd be kinda rad if i learned to draw short comics for fic scenes i like??? But yeah basically in one inktober post there would only be 5 ideas (a lil more complicated on average i do give for granted but like. Those took me WEEKS) but yeah i just. I wanna draw them. Even if itll probably take me for fuckin ever... (And i didnt even finish off the last two inktober batches, oh. And i have a uni thesis to do ew) .... I wanna push myself to draw faster (less iterations to get it right) and so i can have rly solid and good and quickly done drawings to then color in as i learn to for future?)

Ugh man. You know what i need to do/shouldve been doing before i jumped into coloring original stuff?? I shouldve done colored studies. Like ive been drawing scenes both from reference and original on the inktobers and i think thats why my drawing/character stuff has gotten decent. I really should just whip out like prettily colored movie screencaps and work on painting studies of them. That would really fix up why i cant figure out lights and shadows and blending in coloring! No horrid tutorials just figuring out how can i make it work for me

And you know? You know what it is okay to have pieces that are from before i figured it out right? Im gonna try a slightly different thing for the fix its (if i hate it, theyre good as flat colors too) and yes they dont have a background either please love of god someone tell me how to add random backgrounds bc im not in the mood of scene building further but they float in off white space atm.

If i learn smth ground breaking and can QUICKLY do a bette rendition of the portraits, sure the perfectionist wins. But maybe just maybe. It would be fine to post them as they are. Yea, they look roughly as lifeless as my first big painting/that dinluke poster redraw. And maybe thats okay. Because hi if i do dedicate to doing like a good few color focused studies of star wars scenes as a treat i can come back stronger and have a better piece???? Its about growth babes. YEA

Alright i said to myself thats it in gonna go sleep on it and continue tomorro but. I thought id slip in here a secret surprise for anyone unfortunate enough to have clicked read more... And i got a little whiplash opening the picture bc it looks. SO WRONG but the more you look at it its like ... Fine. Ok judge for urself and tell me pls, first and second attempts at 'rendering' the portraits (the darker bground was the first attempt just going by gut, the lighter one after trying to watch like 1 tutorial and using more brushes and just generally trying rly hard!!)

yes ive clearly fixed issues in the sketch differently in both so they... look... like different expressions?? idk man idk idk idk see now this small they look differently off!! god the curse of the zoom in and out and perception.

AMERICAN CULTURE OINK OINK - FINISHED PRODUCT

Yes. Finally. After spring break I have finished. This piece was originally just going to be colored pencil, but I added black acrylic paint for the background as well as some of the shading. There is also watercolor in the glass and eyes. Finally the last medium I used was black pen to really give this piece a chance to pop.

To be honest nothing in this pieces really makes sense (art wise) nor do any of my pass pieces but its ok. Im not really sure why I chose to shade the table and object on the table like that when I shaded the shirt and tie in a different way. The sleeves are also awkwardly crumpled and the coloring on the suit is not smooth enough to pull it off as fabric.

I like how the ice cubes came out (despite only spending less than 10 minutes on it) and the bottom of the glass since the right side looks a little similar to how a glass cup would behave when on a table.

The shading on the ears are not the same and I think I favor the left one more. I could go back and try to fix it or learn how to shade animal ears.

I think that Anne was using green watercolor to paint in her frog, but she suggested I color the eyes green and I thought it was a brilliant idea since I was having a hard time keeping the eyes white and shaded in the right areas. And since I lovVVeeEE green watercolor soooOOO mmUUcccHHH I just HHHaaDDD to use some of the green watercolor on the drink/glass which in my opinion made the piece pop.

I thought that I would regret putting the pen in but Im glad I did it because it made the snout and eyebrow/eye area pop and look more mean just how I wanted. Of course, the cheeks are still missing something since its still too bright and not “dirty” enough like the rest of the pig’s face. Its really flat.

Also there is not enough depth in his face from the snout to the cheeks. Its still very flat.

Also the top of his head looks like a wrinklely brain which isnt pleasing to the eye, but maybe that good because he isn't supposed to be someone you like to look at. ITs supposed to repulse you. Or maybe the top of the head is just “bad art” and not good bad art (if that makes sense). His forehead is just very messy. Its like a bad blend of every medium that I used on his head.

The bowl/plate on the table is very flat despite me trying to shade it. i think that I made it a very awkward size and since its not perfect or realistic enough it just looks weird to the eye.

The fists look weird. I think I just need to practice more on hands. THe thumb (nail) area is messed up and the thumb finger is super long.

The neck area does not look real. Like the adams apple is too rectangular. The shirt wrinkles are shaded weirdly as well. Its too thick? it isnt blended out well enough.

I think that I just need to practice shading more? Also similar to my cherry blossoms piece, everything is very stiff. Instead of the pig’s body language seeming fierce it just seems stiff, uncomfortable, and crocked.

More thoughts on Wakfu

As of ep 10, there have been at least 5 poop/fart jokes. And oh look women have thrown their panties/bras onto the field b/c humor?

This show hasn’t been funny once. It’s been trying to be funny and I can tell but the jokes haven’t been funny. Toilet humor isn’t funny, sexual humor isn’t entertaining at all, folks being overwhelmingly stupid is just plain sad and mildly concerning. Characters not knowing things they should and not figuring out simple shit is bad.

The pacing is wow, way too fast to build any kind of anything. No sense of drama or character and any potentially decent jokes are ruined. It even effects the dialog and makes it feel off. Other than the first 2 eps the plot barely makes a few cameos here and there. Also, it doesn’ t feel like most of the characters give much of a damn about each other either. And their priorities are really fucking skewed, possibly for comedy but it isnt funny. Also jumps around way too much. Also somethings need to be shown not told

(Ok the sports eps have been decently entertaining, not perfect but much better than everything else so far eps 10-12)

The flash is ok, kinda herky-jerky in places and not really up to what I consider great. Maybe a step down from Wild Kratt’s other than the actiony bits.Also so much fucking cheek mouth I’m starting to get Hellsing Ultimate flashbacks, and that’s not good. There’s more than a bit of blatant CG that is not properly altered to fit with the rest of the art. The yellow kirby’s design kinda gets on my nerves and it took a lot of eps to just glimpse properly designed birds. Also the fuck is that ball of spider? why?

-the ladies look way too similar for my liking, like across the board and not counting gonks. And that’s not good. Also why so much tit and ass focus?

- some of the design choices are far too goofy, like the eyes of those minotaurs and that dragon cat thing.

-some definitely reused designs

- you’ve got folks with noses and folks without em, so why the flip can the folks without noses smell? That doesn’t make sense

-Also the fuck it this mouth flapping

Ok so the main villain, talks way too fucking much. There isnt any menace in a jabber mouth. Hasn’t done much to affect things as far as I can tell. And really chats too much.

-Really a lot of the ‘bad’ guys talk way too much. Way too fucking much. This show doesn’t know when to shut up. Silence can be useful.

-so do the demons have any real plans after getting free or is it just wreak shit for the lulz? that’s not exactly exciting.

Also, I was told to skip to ep 15 b/c that’s when it picks up, but that’s not a good thing. If it takes a show more than 3 eps to hook a new watcher (potentially) then it fucking failed as a piece of entertainment.

It failed my 3-4 ep rule. If not for it being relatively pretty and having a lot of hype and the bit of spite I have from someone dragging Magi-Nation in comparison to it, I would have dropped it well before now.

As is its not getting more than a 5/10 at best if i finnaly get around to reviewing it.

(3/10 is more realistic so far unless it impresses me)
