In the Land of Tiny Books
Our Head of Special Collections Max Yela has collaborated for decades with Milwaukee artist and art professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) Leslie Fedorchuk (on the left in the first image; Max is on the right). This semester, Leslie is teaching a MIAD course called "Magical Miniatures" and she brought her class over for a discussion and review of artists books that use small scale as expression.
While Max is not very fond of miniatures or the miniaturization of books, he does like books that are small for compositional reasons. In fact, one of his favorite artists books, In Here Out There (third image) by the late Minnesota artist Jody Williams, is quite small (5 x 7 cm). Since we hold about 95% of Jody Williams's work and about 90% of the small editioned work of Peter & Donna Thomas, after a discussion, the class spent time reviewing selected works by these artists, plus about a dozen others by local book artists.
This was the first time these art students, many of them Juniors and Seniors, had ever encountered artists books before, and all expressed that it was a transformative experience. We look forward to seeing some of the book work that comes out of the assignments for this class!
The photographs shown here were taken by MIAD Web Content Specialist Olivia Langby.

I was messing around on Canva late last night and decided to redo my studyblr logo this morning haha.
I know Canva isn't used for professional designs or portfolios, but I still find it's fun to dabble with it here and there. I'm more of a traditional art gal, but I like making simple designs when I want to be on a computer but don't know what to do.
If you can't tell, I like coffee! XD I'm drinking a cup now with the International Delights Bridgerton Creamer (English Toffee flavor) and it's pretty good. They made the flavors and designs in promotion for Bridgerton Season 3, which I am super stoked for, but the flavors themselves are super good.
I cleaned up my station in the art studio today so when I come back from spring break, I can have a fresh start. Our new prompt is to paint an interior on stretched canvas and to hopefully let that piece be our last full piece for the semester. It's super intimidating, but our professor wants us to focus on details of individual objects in a bigger setting. I am still working on my acrylic paintings for my Honors project so I am switching between acrylic and oil medium every few days.
My last oil piece I did before I leave for the break was another pet portrait of my cat (which I might post if there's interest). I liked being able to practice cat anatomy but also I worked on a larger canvas than I have done so far these past couple months.

FELLOW SELF TAUGHT ARTISTS!!! two seconds of your time!
I'm going to start a (or the ig) self taught artist curriculum for more structure in my studies bc ofc as someone who hates school, I need that kind of structure to get me to actually work towards my goals.
anyway, long story short, I plan to create a discord server where anyone who's interested can join and we can begin together and hold each other accountable. so kinda like a class or club but I'm not the teacher and its no pressure.
but we do actually have to put in the work yk. idk I'm rambling.
just vote on the poll if you'd like to join and from there we can move forward with getting the actual server up and running and organizing a start date and such.
here's the basic overview. i can post the full thing as well if people are interested. its also super easy to find online⤵️

Dear Gus & Magnus,
Nene joined me at the UA-Little Rock Distinguished Alumni Luncheon. We talked for a while after until I decided I should just call it a day, so I wrapped up at the office quickly, and went home to pick up Gus with Mom. Nene tagged along with us to the Windgate Center for Art & Design's holiday art sale. Gus has asked at a few different events lately to get his face painted, so we let him this afternoon. He told the woman he wanted to be a blue tiger. When we got home he asked if he could go show Rhett his face.
Nene kept you while Mom and I ran over to another holiday art show at M2 because there were some new Milkdadd pieces we were eying. We walked in, saw that the piece we liked was in our budget, and bought it. There are things that Mom likes, but I don't -- or some things that I like that Mom doesn't -- but our tastes align pretty well when it comes to art. We're both excited to put this one on our wall.
At bedtime, both of you requested that Nene read to you. She accommodated, of course.
Dad.

When Art meets Fashion: Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas, The Shop, London, 1993. Courtesy and photograph: © Tracey Emin and DACS/Artimage
Art by Women - Women in Arts @abwwia
"In December 1992, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas – then young artists recently graduated from the Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths, respectively – signed a short lease on a former doctor’s surgery in the East End of London. The Shop, as it came to be known, opened at 103 Bethnal Green Road on 3 January 1993. It closed with Emin’s 30th birthday party – ‘Fuckin’ Fantastic at 30 and Just About Old Enough to Do Whatever She Wants’ – six months later, on 3 July." My favorite current little trinket about tumblr is that classical art blogs have been struggling to find paintings for YEARS and argue the meanings of all the silly little demons and skelies while actually getting a degree for it. AND THEN a fucking BL SHITPOST BLOG dumps out all their life’s work, fitting perfectly to the aesthetic and character themes of their blog, never saying A FUCKING WORD. Chad behavior.

So I made a reply a while ago about some cool dude who made a small hidden camera to take secret pictures during like 1890... and some people reblogged it where they were impressed with my small mention on how technically easy it is to just make your own camera. More specifically, with the fact that my camera class back then simply decided to make a whole room into one. Now I didn’t want to detract too much from the actual guy, so I left it at the mention, but thought it might be interesting for some people.
My class actually got the idea cause when we were making our small cameras as part of class, the prof mentioned that there was some artist dude that made a big trashcan into one and hid inside it. So he could get secret pics without anyone realizing. And that is naturally a pretty big camera. But we wanted...bigger.
So we at first went with small stuff, figuring things out, getting the hang of the calculation time, etc.
Tumblr media
These are just MY cameras, I was among the less creative ones except for the bread box lol (one girl had a multi-cam inside a jewelry box and one dude turned his car into one). Pictures made with these turned out mostly fine, the ones that went bad we could all retrace to an error in calculating exposure time.
Tumblr media
But obviously, we had our eye on the BIG prize.
It worked in our favor that the university was actually constructing a whole new building and thus a lot of rooms and labs were being emptied out to move into the new one. So we kept nagging, begging and annoying...until we were given one month in which we could have a double office (as in, two rooms connected with a door). From there, camera creation began:
Step 1: Make it a black box
Any light that is inside a camera can mess up your picture so you want it to be as black as possible, that way only the light and thus image from your hole will be on the photo. So we went, “borrowed” all the black cloth we could get from the theater club and went nuts.
Tumblr media
Also, obviously we got ourselves a thing that was supposed to hold our photo paper
Tumblr media
Did I mention how MASSIVE the paper was? We actually had to cut it into 3 smaller pieces so we could better transport and develop it.
Step 2: Take the picture
So we actually at first had a math error and thought it will take 2 hours and 30 minutes, but that ended up being almost black and after rechecking everything, we noticed that 1 hour 40 minutes was enough.
Which for us meant sit in this pitch black room, doing nothing, cause if we’d leave, light would come in and shit. Thank the heavens that it was not 1890 and we thus had music players lol. Have an exciting image of what our life was for those 2 hours inside our camera ♥
Tumblr media
Step 3: Develop the image
So now came the actually most complicated part. NORMALLY you just have the image fully submerged in development fluid, then wash it off by fully submerging it in water. We...couldn’t exactly do that without renting a pool, sooo
Tumblr media
Yes, it was as tedious as it looks. The room was a mess after and we all smelt like an exploded bleach factory.
Step 4: Admire your photo
At the end of the day tho, we got our picture (obv this is digitally inverted, but I like it like this more).
Tumblr media
Two 2x2m photos of the view from out the university window, made by making an entire room into a camera. It was a lot of fun, it was very cool and if you happen to have an empty room for a month, a photo development lab and big light-sensitive paper, then I can only recommend it lmao
BONUS: Do bullshit with the camera
We were art students, what did you expect: for us to just disassemble it after and call it a day? Nah.
We put 3D glasses on our hole and then enjoyed looking at the view in 3D
Tumblr media
We also obviously brought in massive rolls of normal paper and decided to sketch the outlines of what was projected for lulz
Tumblr media
So yeah, build your own camera. Have fun, figure stuff out yourself. Instagram filters are all neat and cool, but there is something really exciting about doing it like the old masters ;)

Art Expositions in Houses waiting for Tenants.
Contact house owners who are looking for tenants and ask if they are open to the concept of exhibiting your works during one day or multi day expositions in their houses while they remain on the market.
You can offer to pay a price per day, or give them a commision percentage when a sale happens as a result of the exposition.
They get extra income and we get a platform.
Or maybe you find a generous soul who will let you do it for free. Because more people seeing the house flled with art, the higher the chances of them being sold or rented out. Everyone wins.
Plenty of empty houses and art lovers out there.
Signed, an artist.
