Is it still tracing, in your opinion, if u go for just the pose but use your own OC?

Yes, that's still tracing.

Changing the character doesn't magically erase the fact that you traced.

If you want a pose to use for your artwork, you can use tools where you can make your own poses, or select one from the gallery that is specifically made for artist reference instead of disrespectfully ripping off another artist. All of these below are free:

You can literally find all of these just by googling 'art tool pose'. There's tons more that aren't listed here, especially on android and apple play stores that's avaliable for free.

You can also use a reference image from someone who specifcially creates reference stock images for artwork and comics, like AdorkaStock on DeviantArt who's pretty famous for creating such a huge, organized gallery for artists to use for reference.

It's not hard not to trace.

Thank you @eternal-servants-of-old for pointing out another example of Ugigiugi's tracing. As you can see she traced the nautilus shell logo, a stock image, and claimed it as her own even watermarking it on DeviantArt although she has not come up with the nautilus shell logo design herself.

Since I've seen this popping up more and more especially with younger artists who might Trace trying to learn and practice

Now if they are tracing from somebody's art yeah that's a problem and should be corrected, however if they are tracing any popular character like I've seen happening with public domain Mickey and Oswald from the official art, don't say anything

Tracing is actually one of the oldest things we artists do and have done. Even Disney themselves used to trace with their movies to shorten the time it took to animate a scene,

Many artists learn and still even if they've been drawing for 20 years they still Trace.

Usually at that point though we'll be Tracing our own art, I am actually one who traces my own art so that way a piece doesn't end up taking me 20 hours to complete because of all the rendering I have to do.

With Mickey and crew, that's actually quite easy. I struggled for about 4 hours to get that darn Mouse drawn the first time, and now I trace off of that first one and am working on making a model sheet of his heads to trace off of to make my life easier, struggle once so I dont have to again....I'm pretty sure I'm following in the footsteps of some Legends at Disney who have done the same thing with him lol.

This should not be controversial tracing should only be controversial when it involves another artist that they're stealing from however if it's a large corporation nothing should be said
