came because i’d never seen a disabled archeologist before (i want to be an archeologist really bad and i’m pretty sure i’m getting a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis tomorrow as a teen so yk.) and stayed because i love your archeology postings and it’s comforting knowing there are people like me out there in my dream felid.
Tumblr media
Hey, I have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis too! Being an archaeologist is absolutely possible for you! I've had to plan my career around my body's abilities, and sometimes it's been difficult, but it has been achievable.
The week after I got my JRA diagnosis I got my kazoo tattoo (designed by @art-thropologist) as a way to remind myself not to forget the whimsy in life. Maybe you can find something similar for you.
Finally, I hope that the diagnosis (should it be given) will open the door for you and your doctor to find some methods of care which will increase your quality of life.
It is terrifying getting a diagnosis that young. It's okay to be terrified—it's natural, even. Give any feelings arising from your health the time they deserve, and then let them go. Letting go can be a difficult, frustrating process. Have compassion for yourself.
People like you and I just have to play the hand that's been dealt to us to our best advantage. Sometimes that's really, really hard to do, and that's okay. Learn to think outside the box, to find opportunities and get accommodations. The path ahead of you does have some obstacles, but it is not impassable.
You're more than welcome to pop back into my inbox if you need someone who might understand what you're going through. I'm also always happy to talk about accessibility in higher education, studying archaeology in college, and being an archaeologist with arthritis.
Keep your trowel sharp and your heart hopeful,
-Reid
P.S. I don't know if you've tried topical Voltaren gel yet for inflammation pain, but that shit is the bomb. You can buy it over the counter now, but it's cheaper if a doctor prescribes it because then your health insurance will pay for it.

Hello! I've only followed your account for a little bit, but I love seeing all of the Anthro stuff that you post!
I feel like you might appreciate this, but I am doing research this semester on internet sociolinguistics, specifically on Tumblr! I've made a survey about the word 'smol' and if you could spread it to any Tumblr users you know I'd v much appreciate it.
The survey is here
I hope you have a good day!
Hey everyone! Look! A linguistics survey!
It's really quick, you should take it!
Gonna tag @chaotic-archaeologist @art-thropologist @artbyeloquent ... I know there's more of you out there who could spread the word, please pretend I tagged you!

I hear ya, but i feel as if ppl dont then give as much if not the same respect to egyptian tombs either
Oh, you are definitely right and that’s another thing I could write an article on. There’s issues of colonialism and temporal distance, along with other factors relating to thanotaulogical beliefs/practices. For sure, anyone visiting the Valley of the Kings or the Pyramids should be behaving with supreme respect to the owners of the tombs even if they aren’t interred there anymore.

this is so funny- I just signed up for the lgbt society at my uni, and when i introduced myself in their discord as a first year archaeology student, two others immediately went 'oh im doing arch too!!'
so. uh i guess you were right about archaeologists being very queer lmao
Yep, we're a pretty queer bunch! (Psst, you should totally go check out @art-thropologist's Redbubble Shop, which features lots of queer archaeology designs!)

hi from an anon nine months ago! i got into uni to do arch bsc! and my goodness it is stressful! so many essays T-T but ultimately i'm having fun and it's going to be interesting seeing where this takes me bc i shall see this through to the end or so help me! regarding help for my disability...? i can't get accommodations, but i'll just deal with it. also we have a dog in our department:D i hope you're having a good day! and to the other anon: let's go trans archaeologists!!! we are many>:]
I think a lot of people feel a shock during their first year of higher education because it can be a lot more intense than high school. I personally had so many what the hell have I gotten myself into moments. You're not alone, don't worry.
Regarding accommodations: that sucks, I'm sorry. You say 'uni' which makes me think you're outside the US, in which case I don't know if there's any helpful advice I can give.
There are many, many queer archaeologists. @art-thropologist just did an awesome series of queer archaeology stickers and badges that you can find on her RedBubble shop! I bought this one:

Genuine question, and feel free to ignore if you don't want to answer, but could you elaborate on the collections post? What are your own thoughts on the subject?
Okay so "Fewer and Finer" means the director wants fewer pieces on display/accessioned and those pieces are to be finer quality.
Sounds reasonable, right?
No.
In reality this pisses-off guests who have come (in some instances from far internationally) to see pieces in our very vast and encyclopedic collection, that have been pulled from display because they don't meet the qualifications of 'finer'. This is already happening with our textiles gallery and our Japanese ink collection--both of which are closed because we need to use the spaces for storage of all the works that are being pulled from display.
I have a huge issue with the concept of 'finer quality' art. Who decides what is 'good' art? Why do they get to decide? How are they deciding what is and isn't 'good' art?
If you've been following me, you know one of my repeated quotes is that "There's no such thing as bad art. There is stupid art, but you have to intend to make that." Meaning that all art is worthy of display, worthy of engagement, worthy of being valued even if the message it conveys is 'wouldn't it be rad if I taped a banana to a wall?'
What people see in museums shapes what they understand to be of importance. So when you only see a handful of the same artists that have already saturated the public consciousness, you internalize that this is the measure of all art. As a result, anything that falls outside of those names becomes 'bad' or 'lesser'. Now remember that several cultures did not have the same concept of artist as European tradition. As well many artworks were pillaged, or simply did not have a name associated with it in the first place. Other artworks are objects that don't fit standard notions of art mediums; things like woven basketry, contemporary costumery, beaded purses, etc. The line so easily divides along Race, which impacts how guests see themselves, and not in a good way. Representation matters.
So, yes. "Fewer and Finer" fills me with ungodly rage because it reinforces Eurocentric art history and discourages guests from expanding their view of art. It stagnates engagement with culture.

Things that just happened outside my house
Mom: Kevin, just take the check.
Kevin the Lawn Guy: But I haven't mowed your lawn.
Mom: It's Thanksgiving.
Kevin: I can't. I haven't earned it.
Me: YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE AND YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT WORK ETHICS???
Mom: [Slips check into his pocket while the firefighters start talking to him]

It says something about our family that I have to ask “So did Uncle Joe end up getting arrested at his wife’s funeral or did Uncle John pull some strings so it was after?”

Is it possible for me to go to a craft store and not buy fabric? So far the evidence has been no. I don’t even have a project for this one yet. I still bought it.
