"Harmony in Dissonance: Tate Britain and Spiral Tribe Unveiling Britain's Cultural Tapestry"
In the heart of London, Tate Britain stands as the world center for the appreciation of British art, spanning centuries from Tudor times to the contemporary era. Home to an extensive collection, Tate Britain showcases beloved classics and avant-garde masterpieces, featuring the likes of the Pre-Raphaelites, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, and Lubaina Himid. Notably, it houses the largest compilation of works by JMW Turner, a testament to the rich tapestry of British artistic expression.
However, the gallery's historical sensitivity, particularly in Room 6, 'Revolution and Reform 1776-1833,' poses challenges to the enjoyment of its artwork. The selective amnesia and painful awareness of its past often cloud the visitor's experience. Originally named the National Gallery of British Art, it underwent various monikers before settling as the Tate Gallery in 1932, in honor of sugar magnate Henry Tate, a foundational patron.
Transitioning to the anagram, we find ourselves with 'Attain Tribe,' leading us to the Spiral Tribe—an avant-garde arts collective and free party sound system born in 1990. Renowned for organizing free parties, festivals, and raves, Spiral Tribe left an indelible mark on the UK and later Europe during the '90s. Their fusion of pagan beliefs with New Age traveler culture and techno music birthed the phenomenon known as teknivals.
The relationship between Tate Britain and Spiral Tribe, now SP23, unveils a fascinating interplay between art and music, tradition and rebellion. While Tate Britain encapsulates the historical evolution of British art, Spiral Tribe represents a countercultural force, forging a techno-punk identity rooted in rave and alternative lifestyles. Both entities, in their unique ways, contribute to the understanding of culture in Britain—Tate Britain as a custodian of artistic heritage and Spiral Tribe as a dynamic, subversive force shaping contemporary narratives.
In comparing the two, we witness the dichotomy of tradition and avant-garde, history and rebellion, all integral components of Britain's cultural landscape. The Tate and the Tribe, seemingly disparate, weave a complex tapestry that speaks to the multifaceted nature of British identity and the ever-evolving dialogue between art and society.

🎨#ArtIsAWeapon #Artist: #JeanMichelBasquiat #Artwork: Beat Bop. Test Pressing, Version One, Volume One • Read my brother @jefword's story in @wax_poetics about hanging and creating with Basquiat: Reposted from @jefword That time me and #Basquiat were hanging out making beats and doodling with a magic marker on a bedsheet hanging on a wall at the studio. ✊🏾💯 Taken from the Wax Poetics article "Basquiat In The Place To Be" "So he comes up a couple other times to hang out, and one night he’s there, and Matt had this one big sheet that was tacked up over the window for insulation. I could draw Fred Flintstone really fast, I always loved Fred Flintstone since I was a kid, so I drew it on a piece of paper. Jean saw it and gave me a black magic marker and said, “Draw it up there,” meaning on the sheet, so I did. He said, “That’s really good!” Then he drew a figure. Then I drew another character. Then he drew something else. Then I started writing graffiti a little bit, and he started writing. We were just high as hell, marking on the whole thing. Then he said, “Sign it.” So I signed it. Then he signed it.. Now, I did not know this was Basquiat. I thought he was just some cool dude...." Music is Art
Anytime I get an opportunity to mix art with music it inevitably becomes a labour of love, so I jumped at the chance recently when offered another guest illustration spot for the ‘HearSej’ podcast presented by Seja Vogel. A musician herself, Seja presents candid interviews with a wide range of musicians about their artistic origins, how they work, what they love and fear, and the strangest things that happen at gigs (the bit that I illustrated here). It’s always a lot of interesting fun and one of just a few music based podcasts I subscribe to. Seja’s latest episode is a warm conversation with Hannah Joy from the Oz band ‘The Middle Kids’ who tells a funny story towards the end of their chat about having a banana thrown at her whilst up on stage. The illustration is my exaggeration of Hannah’s description (only the bananas have been changed to protect the incident). Speaking of bananas.. a lot of people don’t know this, but bananas are the fruit of the genus Musa, one of the most important fruit crops of the world.
So basically this is a Musa hitting a Muso :)

Maybe it’s because I’m looking forward to spring and the colors in this painting remind me of wildflowers, that’s why I’m posting this one. The perfect marriage between Art and Music; artist Linda Charles has spent her career developing new ideas and continues to break new ground as she strives to produce work that both connects on cerebral and visual levels and produces the same feelings in the viewer as it does with her when she paints it. More recently, it is he sell out Pulp re-imagined collections that have highlighted her dexterity with a paintbrush, where she combines her love of the imagery of the pulp paperback books of the 40s, 50s and 60s with a back catalogue of famous hits, artists, and lyrics. Music has always been an important part of Linda’s creativity and she always paints to music in her studio. She had the idea of combining elements of classic songs and artists with the look and feel of old paperback books when she came across a box of vintage books in the attic. “The first one I came across featured a stunning women running from a pair of headlights following her in a remote area - Immediately ‘Born to Run’ by Bruce Springsteen played in my head and the concept was born! I have so much fun with these collections because they combine the two artistic concepts of audio and visual. I’ve received so many lovely comments from all walks of life, whether that be from famous songwriters to future brides or just pure music lovers and art collectors.’ . . . . #TheWho #ArtAndMusic #Music #LindaCharles #LindaCharlesArt #SaturdayArt #artoftheday ay #BeInspired #It’sTheWeekend, #MusicLovers #ArtCollectors #WestoverGallery, #SomethingForTheWeekend, #MakeItBournemouth https://www.instagram.com/p/CnHHIUnIAvk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
