I guess anyone faintly familiar with Belgian modern architecture will agree that it is tremendously plural and often quite unique in terms of style, materials and individuality. An architect for whom all of these attributes apply was Arthur Degeyter (1919-2004) who despite his massive oeuvre of more than a thousand individual projects hasn’t received much attention within or outside Belgium. Degeyter graduated from Sint-Lucasinstituut in Brussels, a former stronghold of the neo-Gothic slowly opening up to modernism, in 1941 and in 1947 set up his own office in Mariakerke/Ostend embarking on a career that lasted until the closing of his office in 1992. With „Arthur Degeyter - Architect“ Borgerhoff & Lamberigts recently published the first comprehensive monograph on the architect that brings together major works as well as biographical and theoretical context. Celine Oosterlynck and Marc Dubois recount his development as an architect of predominantly houses but also office buildings, churches and a considerable amount of renovations and restorations. They point out Degeyter’s undogmatic approach towards architecture that never sought the opposition of past and present but let the former inform the latter. Fascinated by English Arts and Crafts he approached many projects as total works of art blending exterior, interior and garden in a most sensible way that surely also derived from the heritage of his father being a carpenter. Through numerous vintage and contemporary photographs the book transports a lot of the fascination his buildings exert until today and further emphasize the unique interrelation of every aspect of his buildings that really make them Gesamtkunstwerke. A highly recommended book and an architectural oeuvre that deserves every attention.
