Arthur’s love language is gift giving, always has been. He realises this when he returns to a modern Albion full of all these new terms and words and definitions. Back before he died, he didn’t have the time to properly make things for his loved ones as he was the King and he was incredibly serious about his duties.
Yet when he returns to a modern world, he finds himself crown-less and with a lot of spare time. Cue discovering YouTube and google, how-to-tutorials, craft books and step by step guides.
Back in Camelot, Merlin was a nightmare to get things for, nothing flashy or expensive or Arthur would have his ear nagged off about wasting money. But now? Paper and paint seem to be limitless to Arthur and he’s just learnt what origami is.
Merlin comes across him one morning to find the returned king fast asleep and surrounded by hundreds of painted paper dragons. It’s the best gift the immortal has ever received.

Headcanon for modern Merlin that the first time Arthur goes out, Merlin gives him a feather boa, kids costume wings, tells him it’s modern fashion and basically makes him look like an idiot as revenge for the “servants uniform” hat in episode 4.
They laugh about it, of course, but it begins a prank war type game where they both remind each other of stupid shit they did in Camelot.
Arthur buys Merlin a wooden carved worm and left it in his bed to remind Merlin on the time he woke Arthur up and the best (worst) excuse he could come up with was looking for woodworm.
Merlin makes chicken and labels the leftovers “destiny and chicken”
Arthur retaliates by leaving a miniature stocks model in their living room.
Merlin buys Arthur donkey ears on a headband.
Arthur buys Merlin a book of poetry.
Merlin buys Arthur a copy of the ghost busters movie.
You get the idea.
Arthur leaves a romance book out about a couple who don’t realise they’re engaged out, (sigil conversations happen, and so does Merthur)

Arthur wakes underwater. His lungs fill with water like it’s oxygen, his heart still in his chest. Steel flickers in the edges of his vision, drawing him deeper, and deeper, crimson dragging across his hands as he raises them. He kicks on instinct, once, twice. And air crashes across his cheeks sharply, cold and biting. There’s a hand on his wrist, his neck, hauling him up out of the lake. Dark hair clings to pale skin, blue eyes sear into him tearfully. “Merlin,” Arthur begs, prays. “Merlin.” A shaky breath and a long moment where Arthur’s throat is clogged with fear and love. The answering call is just as beautiful as he remembers. “Arthur.”

In some random modern Arthur returns au, Merlin would be living in this small little everyone knows everyone village. And magic or not sorta world, everyone knows that Merlin is much older than he looks, that's he's lived there for a very long time and just keeps to himself most of the time.
Then Arthur comes crawling out of the lake and joins Merlin in the village, living at his sweet wee cottage.
And the little everyone knows everyone community goes mental that this new and random guy just starts living with the town cryptid.
One day, both Merlin and Arthur are at the town's only cafe/restaurant/ literal hole in the wall, and someone finally works up the courage to ask how the two met.
Arthur, still getting used to the modern world and trying to be very polite to the villagers: we knew each other when we were younger
Merlin who no longer gives two shits: yeah, and then I found him at the lakeside bleeding out from a stab wound after he had escaped a crazy cult
The poor person who now regrets asking: oh... That's nice?

Complementarity, Entanglement and the Uncertainty of Destiny —or— A Feminist Mage in King Arthur's Court by Jenrose (@jenroses), procoffeinating (@procoffeinating)
Merlin was once told that Arthur would rise again at the hour of Camelot's greatest need. But a thousand years pass, with no Arthur. When the last war comes, and the world dies, and Arthur still doesn't return, Merlin suddenly realises that the hour of Camelot's greatest need… was a thousand years ago. Sometimes he's a bit slow on the uptake. Fortunately, he's figured out how to go back. What would YOU do if you had 2000 years of experience in the body of a 17 year old, and absolutely nothing left to lose?
Note: E-rated sections clearly tagged, can be skipped.

we can't talk about time travel without talking about this fic: i.e. the finest 100k words fix it
2. time, mystical time by andiwriteordie
Finally, the man tears his gaze away and meets Arthur’s eyes once more. “I seek the aid of your Camelot,” he says, but his voice sounds more hesitant now, as if he’s had to change his response for some strange reason.
Merlin can’t help but believe that reason is him.
“As for who I am,” the man says with a bit of a chuckle, and he glances around the room again at familiar faces, at his friends. “I am Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot.”
Or:
When a mysterious stranger shows up to Camelot claiming to be Arthur from the future and seeking help for his sick consort, Merlin learns some things about himself, about Arthur, and about a future he never dreamed was possible.

wonder who that consort is

arthur returns
A Faire Fight by Zaharya (@zaharya)
Arthur caught sight of Merlin when there were maybe fifteen of them left. He faltered, jaw dropping open, and it was pure luck the man charging at him had terrible aim, or he would’ve failed out of the melee right then and there. Pulling himself together, he made quick work of his attacker, before putting some distance between himself and the others to collect himself. And, perhaps, to stare just a little.
Merlin was… magnificent. He wielded his sword like an extension of his own body — a lesson most of Arthur’s knights had never truly mastered. His movements were quick and precise, yet fluent, graceful in a way Arthur had never seen before, as he landed disqualifying hits on two, three, four opponents in rapid succession.
Or: The one where Merlin brings a returned Arthur to a medieval faire and they fight in a tournament.

3. I think of loss and I can only think of you by wanderingtrickster
Arthur comes back... but not the way Merlin expects. On top of that, he can hardly believe it's real. Seriously, he... hardly believes it. Though it becomes easier when Camelot's former king tackles him into the bathtub and they both end up soaked. On top of that, Arthur is being surprisingly affectionate.
In his own way that is.

Arthur rises out of the lake almost regularly. War, famine and disease are horrendous but not uncommon things.
Merlin patches him up and fills him in on all that he’s missed and the two go to save the world.
The pattern becomes unmistakable. When there is famine, Arthur starves to save his people. He dies of each disease just as the cure is discovered. In every war he becomes a casualty, but his people emerge victorious.
It pains Merlin. Each death as heartbreaking as the first. Each begs the question if Arthur will rise again or if it the last time he shall gaze upon his face. Merlin treats each moment, each death, each resurrection as the last. He kisses harder, holds Arthur closer and whispers sweetly in his ear just in case.
