Merlin rewatch -- S1E2: Valiant

Arthur and Morgana

I really like Morgana and Arthur's relationship in season 1.

It was ambiguous as to what exactly did they think of each other. Were they flirting or just sibling-y bickering? Was Arthur jealous or just being protective? I think both ways worked and both were great.

(Love love love the little jealous Arthur in the background when Valiant was flirting with Morgana)

Whether they were potential romantic couple or siblings, the undeniable truth was that they both cared about each other. I really like Morgana's worried face when Arthur was dressing down by his father in front of the court.

This early in the story, Morgana knew Arthur the best. Being under Uther's "care" together for such long years, I think she related to Arthur the most. (Although, I don't think Uther would be this hard on her.)

Then there was the beautiful scene where Morgana came to give Arthur her blessing. So many words were conversed silently between them.

Lady and the champion. Gorgeous. I just can't resist this kind of dynamic.

I feel that in the midst of Merlin’s visions in this ep, we lost sight of exactly how obsessed Morgana is with Arthur’s birthday present. Girlie did not have to study and caress it like this!

Also shout out to Arthur knowing exactly what Morgana would love. Although I know it’s played as his masculine ignorance in the show, I do believe Arthur truly knew Morgana, who beat him at childhood sword fights, would appreciate and value a gift like this instead of another piece of jewellery. She also keeps and continues to use this dagger throughout Season 4 and therefore always keeps a part of Arthur, and his care for her, with her ;)

Morgana was returning from the Lower Town when Arthur, who was hanging out with friends there, noticed her, all alone.

"Highness, where are you going?" His men shouted after him but he just waved them away and told them to leave without him.

"Morgana! What are you doing in a place like this? he asked, catching up with her and giving her a charming smile.

Morgana became nervous and pressed a bag full of witchcraft supplies to herself. "I helped the poor. What about you? What were you doing here, getting into fights again?"

"I was waiting to escort a fair lady home safely." He smirked and took her arm.

Morgana turned around and saw his friends. "Showing off and playing knight in shining armour front of these you call friends?"

Arthur hurried her away from them. "Why don't you believe that I can genuinely worry about you? The Lower Town is full of criminals, Morgana."

"Why don't you believe that I can stand up for myself, Arthur?" she smirked identically.

"Alright, you can. I just don't want to miss this scene and that's why I'm going home with you. Don't fight me on this."

"My Prince." Morgana smiled back, relaxing a little. He would never guess that she might the biggest criminal here; that her bag was full of herbs, forbidden scrolls, candles and crystals.
