i had another fic idea. (bear with me, it's a long one. read it after the cut.)

percy weasley was always the black sheep of the weasley family - the outcast, the nerd, the one who didn't quite click. so when he was sorted into slytherin, not gryffindor, it wasn't really a surprise.

the weasleys couldn't believe it, though, could they? percy was the smart one. the kid arthur and molly could brag about, the older brother fred and george could prank. slytherin was different. slytherin was a statement.

percy loved it.

for once in his life, percy was away from siblings, parents, and expectations. he was going to forge his own path, and they wouldn't have any hand in it - and that's why he was there, wasn't it? his ambitions, bigger than his family could ever imagine.

percy was still a good student, don't get me wrong. he studied hard and got good marks, and he befriended penelope clearwater, a ravenclaw who valued schoolwork even more than he did. percy was still a good student, still analytical and logical, but not nearly as uptight as his family remembered him. his parents watched as he smiled over letters with his new friends the summer after his first year, and the twins were surprised to see how often he laughed the summer after his second. when they joined him for his third year, their first, they couldn't help but grudgingly respect the easygoing, confident manor of the boy at the slytherin table.

by his fifth year, percy was fairly popular in his house. nobody made fun of him for being made prefect; instead, they congratulated him. as percy waited for his youngest brother to get sorted, he sat beside marcus flint, the two of them making small bets on which houses they thought the first years would be placed into.

neither of them put harry potter in slytherin. neither of them knew what to say when the sorting hat announced the boy who lived was a snake, and neither of them said anything as they accepted oliver wood's distant apologetic smile at the outrage of the gryffindors. harry was supposed to be theirs.

but percy knew that silence, that outrage, that surprise. the discomfort that came with expectations not being followed. so, really, waving harry over to sit beside him wasn't a difficult decision.

in harry's second year, as people spread rumors about him being the heir of slytherin, percy and marcus and oliver and penny and even cedric and cho, third and fourth years themselves, were always there to defend him. their youngest ally, their youngest friend, percy's brother. the boy who respected him, looked up to him, when his own family didn't.

ron and ginny were gryffindors, but harry was a slytherin. harry walked the halls with blaise zabini, draco malfoy, and pansy parkinson, but he also walked them with percy weasley and marcus flint.

as percy grew, watching the odd happenings that surrounded his brother, he learned not to assume the best. he never had, really, but now he knew more than ever how dangerous optimism could be. percy did not go straight into the ministry, still riding the high of being head boy. instead, he spent long evenings eating takeout in oliver's dingy london flat and meeting up with penelope and marcus to discuss books. (oliver said he would've joined their book club, really, but with puddlemere, he was far too busy, and none of them faulted him for it.)

when percy was 18, he was surprised to find tickets to the 1994 quidditch world cup in his mailbox, but he agreed to attend with his family. he received two tickets and chose to bring marcus, letting oliver use his second ticket for penelope. when death eaters arrived, the four of them stayed back to help usher people into the forest. they didn't show their faces, and even then, as he shared a look with marcus at the sight of the dark mark above their heads, percy knew what he had to do.

at the triwizard tournament, percy - now an employee of ludo bagman - found himself sitting with harry potter once again, watching him and cedric (who was already much bigger than the last time percy had seen him) compete. he saw the way harry watched cedric and cho at the yule ball and couldn't help smiling, knowing what it was and going to send oliver an owl about it as soon as he could. he's growing up, percy had scrawled, unable to contain his happiness.

when percy weasley was 19 years old, still a mere child, he didn't walk out on his family for the ministry. he didn't make his mother cry, and he didn't call harry potter a liar. he didn't deflect and forge papers for muggleborns, didn't get them to safe houses. when percy weasley was 19, he and marcus hugged oliver and penelope goodbye before leaving to take the mark, hoping that their sacrifice would be enough.

just like he had in his few months with the ministry, percy quickly rose voldemort's ranks. he smiled as he spoke of getting revenge on blood traitors like his own family, and he laughed when voldemort killed muggles before him, and he gained the dark lord's trust like no other. he sat around a table with severus snape and watched as his former head of house studied him, not realizing how similar the two of them really were.

percy did not forge papers or lead those in need to safe houses, but he didn't have to. that was oliver and penny's job, and he knew enough to know that they were doing it well. he couldn't send letters, but he could send a patronus, and when he learned of cho chang joining the order the second she was of age, he sent one offering his congratulations and telling her to stay strong. not like you aren't already, he'd said. she'd come a long way from the excited little girl who annoyed penny with talks of quidditch.

percy celebrated his 21st birthday with marcus flint and a silvery stag, curled up beside him with the promise of a reunion in the near future.

percy weasley was 21 when he arrived at hogwarts for a battle he pretended to be on the wrong side of. he kept his hood up and his mask in place, and he squeezed marcus's hand before he broke off into the crowd. he may have looked like one of the bad guys, and he may have acted like one all his life, but what was percy if not unpredictable?

when he found fred behind a crumbling wall barely separating him from three death eaters, he cast a spell. he didn't stop to see who he'd killed in favor of this boy (not his family, not anymore), and he didn't stop to revel in fred's surprise as his older brother's voice spilled from a death eater's mouth and told him to get to safety.

percy weasley did not slow down. percy weasley did not hesitate. percy weasley killed friends and foe - they were often one in the same, nowadays - and he fought until it wasn't his fight anymore. he fought until it was time for him to stand back, holding up a bleeding marcus as he watched his baby brother, the one with green eyes the same color as his tie, face off against the man he'd been reporting to for months.

percy did not cheer when voldemort fell, instead dropping marcus into oliver's arms and running foward to pull the brother he'd almost lost into a long-awaited hug.

"i'm proud of you," he whispered, and he held harry, let him sob into his shoulder, until aurors arrived and threatened to take anyone with a mark on their forearms. harry stood his ground, ready to defend, but he wasn't surprised to find percy gone. he walked back to blaise and pansy and draco, collapsed into their arms and gave a small smile to ron, the boy who'd given him company during the dark months in grimmauld.

percy weasley was tired, far more exhausted and far more mature than someone his age should've been. as he fell asleep in oliver's flat for the first time in years, squished between oliver and marcus on the couch, hands tangled in penny's hair, he couldn't help but smiling at one thought:

he was a better spy than severus snape. he was a war hero.

What do you think happens to Slytherins after Hogwarts? The ones who, unlike Malfoy, can't throw their parents names around and escape all trouble. The Wizarding World is tiny, so I imagine the stigma follows them into adulthood real easy, especially with the whole thing with Voldemort likely intensifying it tenfold, do you bet they'd be way more subject to suspicion and totally legal searches by the aurors where they conveniently find something to toss them in Azkaban over?

Well, remember that many of the Slytherins were not Death Eaters.

Draco was the youngest Death Eater to be inducted in. Crabbe and Goyle got high on a prefect power trip but weren't actually Death Eaters who had taken the mark at that point. The other students seem to have less and less involvement than even that (it was pretty much Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle throughout the series that were the super Slytherin Slytherins).

So, reasonably, Draco's the only one going to trial if at all. Considering all the other people who have to go to trial who did a lot worse things, including his own father who is a much juicer target, it's not surprising he got off the hook (that, and Harry thinks he owes him because of Narcissa).

Crabbe probably would have gotten a trial for dark magic voodoo arson, but his dark magic voodoo arson killed him so he gets to rot in hell.

That leaves the rest of the kiddos.

Goyle was high on a power trip, but it was also under order of the Carrows, and while Wizarding Britain could go nuts trying to try underage collaborationists that'd get... very messy... and likely shortly lead to a third wizarding war.

Pansy Parkinson tried to capture Harry for the glory points, but that makes her even less of a collaborationist than Harry so I don't expect anything to have happened to her.

And that's it, that's all we got who even aided the Death Eaters. So Daphne Greengrass, Blaise Zabini, all of them didn't do anything themselves and presumably weren't even involved.

Now, we do have some dirt on their parents. Nott's dad, known Death Eater. Greengrass's father, not a Death Eater but involved in incriminating activities per the fandom wiki, Lucius Malfoy, always a gem, and of course Crabbe and Goyle Sr. proud Death Eaters.

The reason I'm getting into this is that the kids of the parents involved in this, if they're not dead already (see Crabbe), then they're probably losing a good chunk of their money over this and get a stigma with the family name.

And that's where your ask comes in.

It was already bad in Slytherin, you have Hagrid noting casually "25% of the population is irredeemably evil" to Harry like it's a known fact, and that's before Voldemort was resurrected, but for the kids with the black mark on the last name it'll be even worse.

Probably in the aftermath there'll be attempts to um, rehabilitate Slytherin, so the new kids will have to stay on their toes but won't get it quite as bad.

This generation getting out though, well, I love Cursed Child so I will discuss it and note that Scorpius Malfoy's life is ruined over the rumor that his mother went back in time to have sex with Voldemort and he is their love child.

Is this in any way believable? No.

Do I believe something like this could ruin their lives? Yes.

Basically, Malfoy especially, will all be living on Harry (head of the Auror department's) good will and whether or not he doesn't feel like searching their house today (this is not absent in canon either, when Arthur Weasley promotes a low, that does pass, that um... lets them search certain people's houses without warrant).

So, yes, they're going to have a fun time.

Gen Dennis and George talk after the final battle. Pulling Dennis into stories revolving around the Weasley’s grief for Fred is always really interesting to me and i’m not going to lie this one almost made me cry.

Gen When Luna’s mom dies she goes to the burrow to tell the Weasley’s her family won’t be coming over for dinner after all and Percy walks her home. I really liked this. Percy’s reactions to a 9 year old Luna trying to weave around saying outright that her mom is dead was really good.

Stan Shunpike/Percy Weasley, I’m very biased towards this one i won’t even lie but i love it very much. It’s cute, it’s sweet. Percy’s characterization is really nice. Stan’s characterization is really fun.

Chapter 4: Blaise Zabini and the invasion of the library

Series Masterlist

Oh so this is what she meant, is what Blaise concludes as Isabella strolls right up into his secluded corner in the library and sits herself down right in front of him, ruffling through her bag.

She begins to pull out parchment, two quills and a bottle of ink. “Do you have your Charms textbook on you? I forgot mine.” she whispers to Blaise.

Silently handing over his copy, Isabella offers him a grateful smile and gets to work on what Blaise can only assume is the essay Flitwick assigned this week.

Once it became clear that she had no immediate intentions of interrogating him, Blaise returns to Sherlock and Watson’s investigation of the scene of the crime.

Sherlock Holmes approached the body, and, kneeling down, examined it intently. “You are sure that there is no wound?” he asked, pointing to numerous gouts and splashes of blood which lay all round.

Stories like this remind Blaise how stupid blood supremacy is. He has yet to find a wizarding author who captures his attention like Arthur Doyle and yet if he were to ever recommend his books to any of his roommates he would be putting an immense target on his back. Crabbe probably couldn’t even read A Study in Scarlet not because it was written by a muggle but because…he can’t seem to read at all.

“Is that A Study in Scarlet?” Isabella questioned.

Blaise hummed in agreement, not looking up from its pages. The sound of a zipper opening , parchment and quills being brushed against the wood of the table and a zipper closing meets Blaise’s ears.

“Have you read it before?”

“Mhm”

“What did you think?” she urged.

“Well, I’m reading it again aren’t I?” Blaise inquired, placing his bookmark into the novel and setting it aside.

“No need for the attitude. I just didn’t know purebloods had access to muggle fiction.” she bickered.

“Well not all purebloods are idiots so…” He trailed off as he began to question just how much he wanted to tell Isabella, staring at the ceiling as if it would decide for him.

“How’d you get a copy?”

“I bought it.”

“When?”

“Reyes, why are you here?” Blaise challenged deciding to see how far he would have to push to get her to walk away.

“Because you’re lonely looking and nosey. I can appreciate that.” When Blaise involuntarily dragged his hand down his face, she continued “ I mean I can tell that if you wanted to you could be really popular in your house. But instead you sit here alone instead of bothering the Gryffindor quidditch team like the rest of the Slytherin boys.”

“Oh yes I’m mature enough to not care whenever Potter gets unwanted benefits, how special am I?” he responded with a dramatic stretch.

“Incredibly actually, everyone else likes to be all up in his business. Meanwhile you prefer to be in the business of everyone but Harry.”

“He has enough people involved in his life, he doesn’t need me to add to the numbers.”

“That’s very considerate of you.” Isabella announced to the table, as if there was anyone there other than the two of them .

“Who cares?”

“I care.”

That forces Blaise to look at her for the first time since she sat down. Her hair was pulled into her preferred ponytail with her curls going in every direction and her eyes were so honest that Blaise forgot that he should probably respond.

Jumping at the opportunity to finally make eye contact she adds, “Nobody really thinks like that. Again I say, "I can appreciate it.”

Blaise nodded several times as he tried to piece words together to form an appropriate response. And Isabella leaned back in her chair crossing her arms with a smug smile, apparently satisfied that he seemed to finally be listening to her meaning, not just her words.

After a moment Isabella must have decided he was taking too long as she suddenly declared, “And so I have made a decision!”

“A decision?”

“Yes, a decision, we will be friends.” she stated as if it were the most obvious choice in the world.

Blaise raised a brow. “Do I get any say in this decision?”

“Nope.” and she struts away, once again leaving Blaise confused.

From then on Isabella seemed to just appear. Arriving early to their shared classes and asking him about his day only returning to her seat when the other kids could be heard down the hall. Primarily she would join him in the library. Sometimes to silently do homework and other times to interrogate him about his life.

“What’s your family like?” she questioned, once again indulging in her curiosity. Blaise looked at her and she was in what Blaise had silently dubbed her ‘Tired Stance’; chair pushed far enough back to allow her to rest her elbows near the edge of the table, lying her head on her arms, peering up at him through her eyelashes.

“Small. It’s just my mom and I.”

Blaise quickly found himself enjoying Isabella’s presence. She fit his standards of people he doesn’t dislike being around. For every “flaw” she had, she had a trait that balanced it. She wasn’t top of class (those positions were consistently taken by Granger, Malfoy and himself) but she worked incredibly hard to maintain good grades. Her questions (well endless) were always genuine. And she wasn’t afraid to sit in silence.

Blaise really liked that last trait.

“What about extended family?”

“My mom doesn’t have siblings, so it's just my grandparents and I never talk to them…Now that I think about it, I don’t know if they're even alive.

“Oh, what's that like?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well I have five siblings-”

“FIVE?!”

“Yes and-”

“Why?” Blaise pried with a reproachful tone paired with a deep frown.

“I don’t know, my parents wanted six kids I guess, what do you want me to say?” she argued hotly.

“My bad I just, large families like that are really rare in the wizarding world.”

“Hmm, well I guess I should add that they are half siblings. My parents had them while in their previous marriages.”

“...ok.”

“I don’t know why you’re acting so shocked Mr. I Enjoy Muggle Culture.”

“Just because I know alot about muggles doesn’t mean when I get reminded about certain things I’m not taken aback.”

“Hmmmmmm fair enough.” she conceded. “Now going back to what I was saying” -she shot him a glare- “before you rudely interrupted me. On both sides of my family I have tons of cousins and aunts and uncles so it's just weird to me that you don’t have…anybody else.”

“Wizarding families tend to stay small, like two to three kids at most. As for what it’s like, I mean I never had anything different so I can’t compare but I know my mom has my back so that’s all that really matters.” She bites her lip at that and Blaise can practically see her weighing the pros and cons of asking her next question. “Just ask, I won’t get offended.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.” he assured, despite growing anxious.

“What about your dad?”

The roll of his eyes is immediate.

“I don’t care about my dad.”

“... please elaborate.”

Blaise takes a breath. The kind that fills your lungs to full capacity before blowing it out his mouth quietly. “If you ask anyone at this school about me, they will eventually tell you that my mom allegedly marries and kills men for their money.”

“Oh!”

“Yeah.” And while he is tempted to leave it there, he decides to continue. “I shan’t confirm or deny that rumor, I will say that my father was one of those many dead husbands. And that he wasn’t the first one. Therefore he married my mother despite knowing her history of men she marries mysteriously dying.”

“Uh huh.”

“Ergo he was an idiot. Beyond all of that though, I don’t have a need or desire for a father. My mother is raising me just fine on her own, no nannies, no caretakes just her. She has ensured I have a proper education, manners, and am plenty independent and functional. She takes care of me and most importantly she loves me. So no, I don’t care about my dad.”

Content with his rant, he observes as emotion swells in Isabella's eyes.

“She sounds great.” is all she says, her voice thick.

“She is.”

Isabella sits up and clears her throat before stating, “I have made a decision.”

A sense of dread fills him, “What now, Reyes?”

“You need more friends.”

Why does everyone say that?

“No thank you, I have plenty of friends.”

“Like who?”

“Hyunwoo, Kira and Obi.”

“And me.” she adds.

A debate commences inside of Blaise, “And you.” Blaise agrees a second later than polite.

Isabella’s face lights up at his words, “Ok great. Four friends, only one of which attends this school. Not looking great. How many”- she tilts her head side to side- “acquaintances do you have?”

“One.”

“Who?”

“Theo Nott.”

“That’s the boy you always sit with right?”

“That’s him.” Just as Blaise had suspected, Theo had sat next to him in classes and meals as a way to dodge being recruited into Malfoy's entourage.

“Ok so you have five people your age that you interact with regularly, correct?”

“Yes.”

“That’s depressing, Blaise.”

I know she’s not talking about me.

“What about you then, Reyes?” he accused.

“What about me?”

“How many friends do you have?”

“Not many. But, I have lots and lots of acquaintances. Plenty of people who I can rely on and who know they can rely on me.”

“Like who?” He echoed back to her.

“Like almost my whole house.”

That made Blaise pause. “...Liar.”

“Nuh uh.”

“I-”

“...”

“Did you just say “nuh uh”?”

“Yup.”

“That-. I-. Ignoring that, I don’t believe you. There is no way you are on good terms with the majority of the house.”

“It's actually pretty easy, not to be a stereotype but most of the people in Hufflepuff are really friendly.”

“Yes I can believe that. But I know that you, Reyes, are not. So I don’t see how this applies.”

Isabella had the nerve to fake a gasp and dramatically clutch her non-existent pearls. “I am a delight.”

Isabella was … lots of things but a delight was not one of them. Blaise would describe her as a menace and danger to society before a delight. She had her moments of kindness, he’ll give her that. But she was blunt like a cleaver, enjoyed bickering and never shied away from confrontation.

“Whatever you say Reyes.”

“My house loves me. I can talk to almost anyone and have a great conversation.”

“Almost?”

A chuckle escaped her,”There are a very small handful of people who aren’t fond of me.”

“Can’t imagine why.”

With a solid whack upside the head from a rolled up piece of parchment she intended to use for he Potions work she admitted “The point is. That you should meet the rest of my house.”

…

“No thank you.” Blaise said as he began to pack his bag.

“Woah woah. Don’t run away.” She had her hands up towards him like she was trying to calm a wild horse. “I just think that if you gave them a chance they’d really like you.”

“While I appreciate the offer I’m not really Hufflepuff material.” he offered to her as he slung his bag over his shoulder. Her words brought him back to just a month ago when he sat in front of the school and listened to the Hat genuinely consider putting him in Hufflepuff. He escaped from the table, ignoring her calls to him. He made it out of the library and down the corridor before a cold hand gripped his shoulder forcing him to turn around.

“Blaise Zabini, you will make more friends.” she vowed, tightening her hold on him to punctuate her words. “ Whether they be Hufflepuufs, Ravenclaws, Slytherins or even-” her face twisted in disgust “ even Gryffindors. You will make more friends. We will start with Hufflepuffs, you’re most likely to have success there. Having friends in Hufflepuff will lead to being introduced to people from other houses, which will lead to having more friends.” She seemed to realize just how tight her hold on his shoulder had become because she swiftly let go of him and began to rub his shoulder in apology. “I understand not wanting a bunch of friends, I really do. But to spend all seven years of school with only one friend and one acquaintance can’t be good for you. You need a group, it doesn’t need to be large, it doesn't even need to make sense. But you need people you can lean on.”

Blaise turned his head to the right and glared at the wall of the corridor.

Isabella sighed and patted his shoulder, “Just sleep on it. We’ll plan it out tomorrow.” With a small smile she added, "It'll make you feel better.” just as she walked away.

Author’s notes: damn I dont know why this chapter feels so long to me but it does. I think it's because it's very Isabella and Blaise dynamic focused and it's my first time writing them interacting beyond isabella lowkey bullying him in the last chapter I don't know.
