hello fellow comic art fans.
i am the goblin who runs this here blog. otherwise known as @jondoe297
i am extremely bummed that when i do come out and adress the followers of this blog directly it will be with this news. well. here goes:
Comic Art Showcase will indefinitely stop sharing our favorite artists' works until further notice due to the deal tumblr's owner is making with A.I. companies to sell data, enabling the theft of the works of the platform's users to scrape to train their A.I.
and here is a good article about what's going on
while for the over 5 years(!!) now that i have run this page and shared the love of comic art i am so passionate about, through ups and downs,i have kept this page strictly for doing so. not presenting any topics or ideas or even showing my own personality or linking my personal blog(even though i have been flirting with the idea recently. well i guess now is as good a time as any) i feel that if nothing else i have to use this specific platform i have,as it is,to address this topic as it is intrinsic and intertwined with this page's theme or activity. and i will not have it be an open buffet for these greedy corporations to scrape for data to feed the A.I. with which they seek to replace the very artists that i love and admire! even though it may be too late as we don't really know how long they've been doing this. well the inevitable came. and if this page is not deleted it will at least not be posted on for the time being. while we figure out what to do next.
in the meantime we can and have to all do what we can to fight for artists' and creatives' rights. if nothing else by not being a part of the theft and exploitation of them an their work. please do not use any generative A.I. programs for images or text. they work by scraping from databases of artists' and creatives' works without any permission, credit or compensation.
for now we can at least 'opt out' of having our content be shared with the A.I. companies in the settings.
keep in mind this seems to be only available on the web version and not on the app for now!
go to your blog settings from the corner here
Tumblr media
ID/image description: a screenshot of the tumblr blog with a red arrow pointed at the options button. end description.
then go to 'blog settings'
Tumblr media
ID/image description: a screenshot of tumblr blog settings with a red arrow pointing at the 'blog settings' option. end description.
then go to visibility. and turn ON the 'prevent third-party sharing' option. make sure to turn it ON not off.
Tumblr media
ID/image description: screenshot of tumblr's visibility settings with the 'prevent third-party sharing' option turned on. end description.
and you have to do this for each blog and sideblog individually so make sure to do that!
and artists make sure to use Nightshade and Glaze to protect your artwork and images!!!!
here's a link to Nightshade
here's a link to Glaze
the best combination is to use Nightshade first then Glaze on your images.
Glaze creates a protective layer on the image to prevent A.I. from copying it. while Nightshade poisons the A.I. sotfware.
stay safe friends an i will see you around❤

sometimes when you catch someone claiming ai-generated images as their own work, and you point out the obvious art theft, they say, 'well you can't pinpoint an individual artist as the person i'm supposedly stealing from, therefore i'm not stealing from anyone'.
to that i say; just because i can't recognize the mangled corpse you are displaying enough to put a name to it doesn't mean a murder didn't occur.

really guys c’mon
Very A little disappointing to see non artists in book fandoms so quickly turn to AI generated images to make their favorite characters and scenes. The disrespect to the actual artists is like a slap to the face. Those are the people who brought to life those words on a page, bit by bit, for you and you turned and let a machine feed off their work. Pathetic.

We're told our art is worthless, to get a real job, that we will starve. But look how quickly they work to steal our labor for their profit. We are fed this lie again and again because it's a lot easier to exploit us when we don't value ourselves. Clearly it is profitable to create and use AI. Even platforms purporting to support artists (that would have NO content for their platforms without us) are eager to throw artists under the bus for profit. Ask yourselves: Why are AI creators so cautious about the music they pull for their datasets yet so cavalier with visual art? It's because they'd be sued into oblivion. The music industry deserves a lot of criticism but you can rest assured that they will defend their ⓒ tooth & nail. When bots scavenge your data, they scrape away at the rights to your work. Opting out is only an option if all AI programmers decide to start collecting data ethically. There is currently no incentive for them to do so. If a musician samples someone's work for their music, the sampled party gets credit AND royalties. Some artists have proposed an AI model that is both opt-in and allows artists to gain royalties every time their data is used to generate an image. No such thing exists currently.
I urge you to watch this conversation hosted by Concept Art Association feat. the US Copyright office, an AI ethicist, Greg Rutkowski and moderated by Karla Ortiz: https://youtu.be/7u1CeiSHqwY As an aside, how many of you heard from distant relatives or old acquaintances for the first time in forever because they had a brilliant idea for an NFT and you are just the person to make it? Suddenly, your skills are worth something to them. Visibility is crucial for making a living as a visual artist, but the platforms we use to gain visibility are growing increasingly hostile towards us. So what can we do? Well... Be selective with where you host your art. Consider keeping most of it behind passwords, CAPTCHAs or paywalls, only posting thumbnails to socials. The point is to make it harder for bots to scrape the internet for your work. CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS and tell them this matter is important to you! Urge them to introduce bills that regulate how your data can be used! If you're in the US, find your Representative here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative And your Senators: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm Get involved in artist advocacy groups such as: https://graphicartistsguild.org/ We live in an attention economy, nothing is better at grabbing attention immediately than a well-executed image. Artists have already been battling decades of wage stagnation and devaluation but our work is more valuable than ever. Don't buy into the narrative that your skills are worthless. Fight for your rights. Do not support platforms that will diminish your rights for profit. They are NOTHING without you.

There's something almost funny about how some of the most performative eat-the-rich Marxist-Leninist users on this site will loudly and proudly say that it's actually okay to exploit working-class artists because they don't think creating art is a valid form of labor (even if they won't admit it).
You literally had just one job of supporting all workers' rights! The crux of your belief system is that corporations shouldn't exploit the working class and profit off their labor!
But instead, you choose to actively mock people speaking against AI labor exploitation.

PSA for people who might consider commissioning something from me for further commercial use: I don't do things unofficially, under radar and without a proper contract.
For the artists who might be unaware: you are legally entitled to state sales margin/prohibit commercial use of your work pre-contract without any explanation.
It might be looking easier at first to go without papers but in fact you're just helping the second party to avoid taxes at your own expense.
Please protect your rights and your hard work!

The Alt-Right Manipulated My Comic. Then A.I. Claimed It.
Tumblr media
by Sarah Andersen
At 19, when I began drafting my webcomic, I had just been flung into adulthood. I felt a little awkward, a little displaced. The glittering veneer of social media, which back then was mostly Facebook, told me that everyone around me had their lives together while I felt like a withering ball of mediocrity. But surely, I believed, I could not be the only one who felt that life was mostly an uphill battle of difficult moments and missed social cues.
I started my webcomic back in 2011, before “relatable” humor was as ubiquitous online as it is today. At the time, the comics were overtly simple, often drawn shakily in Microsoft Paint or poorly scanned sketchbook pages. The jokes were less punchline-oriented and more of a question: Do you feel this way too? I wrote about the small daily struggles of missed clock alarms, ill-fitting clothes and cringe-worthy moments.
I had hoped, at most, for a small, niche following, but to my elation, I had viral success. My first comic to reach a sizable audience was about simply not wanting to get up in the morning, and it was met with a chorus of “this is so me.” I felt as if I had my finger on the pulse of the collective underdog. To have found this way of communicating with others and to make it my work was, and remains, among the greatest gifts and privileges of my life.
But the attention was not all positive. In late 2016, I caught the eye of someone on the 4chan board /pol/. There was no particular incident that prompted the harassment, but in hindsight, I was a typical target for such groups. I am a woman, the messaging in the comics is feminist leaning, and importantly, the simplicity of my work makes it easy to edit and mimic. People on the forum began reproducing my work and editing it to reflect violently racist messages advocating genocide and Holocaust denial, complete with swastikas and the introduction of people getting pushed into ovens. The images proliferated online, with sites like Twitter and Reddit rarely taking them down.

Animations in Danger! Time to Revolution
Since the day when HBO Max was released on May 27, 2020, you can watch any show like Adventure Time or Smiling Friends until something happen... Warner Bros Discovery decided to remove all animation include upcoming event that meant to be greenlit. We are shocked & angry at the moment they did very unacceptable like why would they do that? It's not just Disney, it's all the company around the world that just started to reject idea from the animators & refuse to pay them more which is sound unfair pay.
Look what they did to the animation on the news:
HBO Max is treating animation fans and creators like garbage (avclub.com)
HBO Max and Cartoon Network Cancels Another Animated Project (comicbook.com)
Without Warning, HBO Max To Slash Dozens Of Animated Series From Its Service (cartoonbrew.com)
'Infinity Train' Creator Calls Out 'Unprofessional, Rude . . . Slimy' Tactics At Warner Bros. Discovery (cartoonbrew.com)
It's time for us to protect animation from losing their rights! We‘re going to make a petition (even if it isn’t going to work) & send protect email to the company to tell them stop treating us fan & creator like trash.
