Artist Statement for my Post

Below is the artist statement that I wrote for my post on the social media pages. 

Artist Takeover - Sophie Lindsay Greetings, I’m Sophie Lindsay. I’m a practicing contemporary artist living in Maryhill. Photographic work, digital alterations, and painting occupy most of my practice. My work explores and questions the meaning of identity. My research examines how identities are formed and whether we have an individual identity. Through digital manipulation and photography, I study my ability to manipulate my physical appearance. The focus of this project is the repetitive cycle of daily responsibilities and the emotional reaction they evoke. My work is expressing the weight of the responsibility of caring for myself whilst attending to daily needs. During the course of this project, I am learning how to balance life while developing my oil painting skills. In keeping with our series imagining how historic artists in their collection might "takeover" our social media platforms, we're featuring Moses Williams, an early African American artist who lived and worked in Philadelphia.

"Today I'm sharing with you all a silhouette of myself from the early 1800s. I grew up in the home of Charles Willson Peale, and like his many children, I was trained to work at the Peale Museum as a silhouettist. My dexterity with this artistic process became so profitable that I was able to marry and buy a home after gaining my freedom. In addition to bringing large crowds to the museum, my silhouettes have both provided me with freedom, independence, and an outlet for my creativity."

Repost from @jerwoodcollection • 🔎FRIDAY FOCUS on ‘Delphinium’ by Katie Pratt Katie Pratt is an artist and abstract painter living and working in London. In 2001 Katie Pratt became the youngest winner of the Jerwood Painting Prize. The title of this work is taken from the flower, delphinium (meaning dolphin-place) which the artist chose because of the colours. The heavily worked and, in places, dense surface is typical of Pratt’s technique. The hairs that broke off from the soft paint brush she used have been incorporated into the surface of the work itself. As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we thought it might be fun to speculate how pioneering artist Violet Oakley might “takeover” our social media platforms. Enjoy!

“I’m excited to give you all a sneak peek of my latest #wip at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg. I’ve been working on a series of murals pertaining to the history of the Commonwealth. To create these murals, I am drawing a lot of inspiration from the life of William Penn and my own beliefs in the Quaker values of pacifism.
