The subject of my digital artworks are actually the members of my favorite P-Pop group, SB19; each member depicts a figure (fictional or real) that I believe captured the Filipino characteristic that they as individuals represent.

“Kapre” - Ken Suson

Like the ‘Kapre’, Ken is known to be a mysterious yet playful member of the group, a description similar to the tobacco-smoking creature that dwells beneath the thick foliage of trees; however, I chose the Kapre for a much deeper reason.

 The origins of this mythical creature go back to the Spanish periods, wherein native Negrito tribes were portrayed in a racist manner by the Spaniards, likening them to dirty, smelly monsters. Ken, the member of SB19, was often judged and bashed for his moreno complexion, something that the majority declare unbefitting for an idol. This reflects society’s beauty standards of glorifying fairer skin and shaming the natural brown skin tone of Filipinos–shaming something that is part of the Filipino identity. Fortunately, Ken embraces and is proud of his golden tone. As a representative of the Filipino nation to the international scene, Ken breaks the stereotypes and sets a new, more inclusive standard.

“Santelmo”  - Pablo Nase

With the Santelmo originating from the Catholic Christians’ belief that the phenomenon was connected to Erasmus of Formia, I figured that it was an apt figure for the group’s leader, Pablo, who never forgets to express his gratitude to the Almighty, both in speech and in the songs he composed. This reflects the Filipino identity of being known as a religious nation. Moreover, I felt that it was a fitting portrayal, as Pablo seems to be burning with his passion for music and performing. To add to this is the way he seems to be on fire when he spits out the rap portions of their songs.

“Ibong Adarna” - Stell Ajero

Known as the heavenly voice of the group, I likened Stell to the mythical Ibong Adarna, which is known for its beautiful singing. It is also befitting that, just as the Ibong Adarna is a bird covered by colorful feathers, Stell is an individual known for his vibrant and cheerful personality, even nicknamed as the group’s ‘Sunshine Boy’ due to his character. Stell represents the Filipino identity of being a cheerful bunch, as well as the Filipino’s multiple talents, especially in singing. Various people from all over the world are amazed by his vocal ability, with some claiming that his voice is quite mesmerizing and amazing, just like the magical Ibong Adarna.

“Pintados” - Josh Cullen Santos

Pintados was the term used by Spanish colonists to describe the tattooed inhabitants of Cebu, Bohol, and other Visayan islands, with most of the Pintados being warriors. Although resiliency is a trait that mustn’t be glorified, still, it is part of the Filipino identity to stay resilient no matter what comes in life. Josh’s family had suffered extreme poverty, and so he did not have an easy life growing up. However, he stayed true to himself and followed his dreams no matter what. Like a warrior of life, Josh did not give up no matter how hopeless he felt life had been. Now, he has reached his dream of being a professional performer, and he continues to inspire and comfort others.

“Engkanto” - Justin de Dios

Engkantos are known mystical beings who reside in nature, and according to legends, are so beautiful and ethereal that humans are easily mesmerized by them. I felt that this was an appropriate figure for Justin; setting beside the fact that he has what the majority consider a beautiful face, his personality is also quite beautiful. He is known for being a lover of nature and animals, has a sunny disposition and witty humor, as well as a warm and kindhearted person. Known for their warmness, humor, and hospitality, Filipinos are also considered part of the most beautiful people and cultures worldwide.

Die Band kommentiert zum Hintergrund von “When Yonder Calls My Name“: “Der Song enthält die ersten Lyrics, die für ‘Dead Aesthetics‘ geschrieben wurden. Thematisch geht es dabei um den ganz speziellen Moment, in dem man erkennt, dass dieses Dasein nun zu Ende ist und eine neue Reise beginnt. Der Ruf des Jenseits wird immer lauter und der Geist taucht in vollkommen fremde Sphären ein.”

Und genau dieser Umstand macht die hochexplosive Mixtur des Quintetts zu einem wahren Festschmaus für diejenigen Gourmets, die es ebenso roh und fies wie kompositorisch und technisch gekonnt in die Fresse gebrettert haben wollen.

Kyoukai no Kanata Movie 1: I'll Be Here

What I like: I like that the movie have two parts. This is the first part of a two-part movie, a recap of the TV series. The animation is the same with the TV series, unlike some film adaptation that changes their artwork/animation.

Plot:

Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors with the power to employ their blood as weapons. As such, Mirai is tasked with hunting down and killing "youmu"—creatures said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form. In a panicked state, she plunges her blood saber into him only to realize that he's an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito, in an effort to boost her own wavering confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Eventually, Akihito also manages to convince her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase.

As the group's bond strengthens, however, so does the tenacity of the youmu around them. Their misadventures will soon turn into a fight for survival as the inevitable release of the most powerful youmu, Beyond the Boundary, approaches. (MAL)
