#as long as i get to see him blow shit up and him n jesper flirt.
Note
Here goes:, because this has been swimming around in my head:
K/az has injured his arm(s) on their last job. He’s sore, having trouble moving it, it's in a sling, etc., something like that.
And on top of it all, for reasons of your choice, he’s SUPER sneezy.
I just want to read I/nej helping him tend to his nose. Since K/az can't reach it himself (or he can but not without immense amounts of pain). Like, I/nej rubbing his nose gently for him, massaging his nostrils through cloth to help him sneeze or not sneeze, soothing the itch, cleaning it up--anything, just give me I/nej tending to Kaz’s super sneezy irritated nose ^__^; only if you like
THANK YOU for this prompt i adore it so much and i genuinely had so much fun writing this! i hope you enjoy :D
assistance (basically, k/az is a TOTAL mess and i/nej is lovely as usual)
After a nasty run-in with some thugs from a rival club during a job gone sour, K/az found himself in quite the predicament. The kind of predicament that meant both of his arms were out of action. To his credit, he’d held up his own against the gang for a surprisingly long time but still walked away with a broken wrist and a very painful forearm that was most likely fractured - not to mention the sizeable purple bruise he was sporting on his jaw.
K/az threw open the door and stomped into the Slat looking positively bedraggled. His hat had been discarded somewhere amidst the conflict.
“It was twenty versus one! I can’t believe he wouldn’t let us get involved!”
“What, and blow our own cover? Did you want us to die?”
“He probably died!”
“Saints, J/es, N/ina, calm down. He was putting up a good fight, I’m sure he’ll be- oh, K/az,” I/nej said, spotting K/az as he entered the room. She stood up from the table where J/esper and N/ina were bickering and approached the rain-soaked man.
“Yes, I took care of them all,” Kaz rasped, answering Inej’s question before she could even ask it.
The gap between them was almost closed as Inej stepped forward, looking closely at his face.
“Are you okay?” she dared to ask.
Kaz let his expression soften at her words.
“I’m okay,” he hesitated, “well, I’ll be okay.”
Concern blossomed in Inej’s eyes like the petals of a crocus.
“You know that’s not what I want to hear.”
Kaz remained silent. He was suddenly acutely aware of each and every droplet of water sliding from his hair and onto the floor, and the way his sodden clothes clung to his skin, and the warmth he felt in his cheeks from Inej’s proximity even under the sting of a fresh bruise. Another drop of rain slipped from Kaz’s mess of soaked black hair, falling down right between their faces. Inej’s eyes tracked the droplet down as it fell to the floorboards. She lifted her gaze to meet his. The heat in Kaz’s cheeks grew, much to his resentment.
“I think you dropped something,” she said quietly, looking back down at the rain-spattered ground.
The corners of Kaz’s lips twitched. He noted the glint in Inej’s deep brown eyes.
A (surprisingly clean) towel ruined the moment by soaring right into their faces. Kaz and Inej looked up simultaneously, met by Jesper’s shit-eating grin.
“Good fight, boss? I knew you’d come out on top,” he said smugly.
“Were you not just panicking because you thought he was dead?” Nina asked with her eyebrows raised.
Inej snorted.
“No idea what you’re talking about, Nins.”
Now it was Kaz’s turn to raise his eyebrows. “And why did you throw a towel at me?”
Jesper shrugged. “Looked like you needed it.”
Kaz sighed. He took the towel from Inej who had picked it up off the floor where it had landed. Inej clocked the way he winced when reaching his arm out.
“Thank you,” Kaz said quietly. He made his way over to the stairs, the gazes of everyone in the room like lasers on his back. Inej watched him closely and, seeing his extra-pronounced limp and the shake of the arm holding his cane with every step, decided to follow him.
“I don’t believe I asked for an entourage.”
“It’s not just your room that's upstairs,” Inej replied, a little too quickly. She knew Kaz didn’t believe her, but he still let her trail behind him as he ascended the stairs lopsidedly. They walked in silence until they reached Kaz’s room, when he looked back at her with a single eyebrow lifted. Inej took this as her cue to pretend to disappear into her own room. She definitely didn’t imagine the pained sigh that escaped Kaz. As soon as he’d shut his door, she slipped back out into the corridor and stood quietly outside, listening.
She heard the creak of Kaz’s chair as he lowered himself into it, then a heavy clatter on the floor.
“Shit,” muttered Kaz. The chair creaked again. Probably dropped his cane, Inej thought, strange, though, that’s not like him. The patter of the rain on the roof and windows severely hindered her ability to listen in on him, however.
After a few moments, Inej did manage to hear a rather wet-sounding thump, presumably Kaz discarding his thick, wool greatcoat onto the floor. Another sigh. Part of her wanted to enter the room and see him, help dry his hair, hang his coat up by the window, fall asleep with her head resting on his firm shoulder, but she knew she shouldn’t. So she waited, she listened.
“Oh, Saints,” Inej heard after a short while. She had not a second to wonder why Kaz had said that, as the next moment she heard a sound she hadn’t heard in a very long time.
“hehH’GNKTSschew!”
She then heard what she thought was Kaz sucking a sharp breath in through his teeth. He’s in pain, she realised. A million thoughts barrelled through her mind - is he sick? Injured? Both? Inej worried at her lower lip, knowing now that Kaz was in way worse condition than he was letting on. Against her better judgement, she slowly pushed open the door… right as Kaz was (trying to) stifle another harsh sneeze.
“hH’GKKTTSChhiew! Huhh…”
The hand he used to pinch his nose was shaking slightly as he lifted it from his face. His brows were drawn tightly together and his teeth were gritted, hard - Inej had never seen him looking so pained. He looked up at Inej who was hovering in the doorway, hand still lifted cautiously in the air, as though he was scared to put it down.
“Saints above, Kaz. You said you were fine,” Inej said with worry.
Kaz averted his eyes. “I am fine,” he replied shortly.
Inej approached him and gently took his gloved hand in hers.
“Don’t-” he started, teeth still gritted. He yanked his hand away instinctively. She noticed how his face paled slightly.
“What happened to your hands, Kaz?” asked Inej, quietly but firmly. Kaz still didn’t meet her gaze.
“Nothing.”
“You can’t expect me to believe that.”
Kaz hesitated. He looked down at his hand.
“Broke it. My wrist,” he muttered with reluctance, “Think the other arm’s fractured, too.”
Inej held back a gasp. “Tell me you’re joking.”
Kaz shook his head, hair still damp from the torrential rain.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” she asked incredulously, “In fact, nevermind that, we need Nina to fix-”
“No, we don’t-!” Kaz cut in. His words were tinted with a note of panic that she’d never heard before.
Inej let her shoulders lower. She sighed. “At least let me patch you up, then.”
“Fine.”
“Right. Good. I’ll get the first aid kit,” Inej said, beginning to turn away.
“-hahH’KKSCHHhiew! Oh, God, I-” Kaz sneezed wetly and openly, cringing at the mess it left on his upper lip. He raised his hand weakly to his face to cover it.
“Saints, and I’ll get some tissues. Try not to move your arms around too much, okay?” Inej said. She left the room.
-
A short while later, Inej returned to Kaz’s room, clutching a box containing the Slat’s first aid kit, as well as a rather old-looking box of tissues. He was still sitting at his desk, one arm hanging at his side, the other with its hand resting carefully on the tabletop. His nose had become significantly pinker since Inej last saw him, which was only mere minutes prior. She was greeted with another grating sneeze.
“haHH’GKKSHHhiew!”
“Bless you,” Inej offered.
“I’m sorry, I… cah-cahhn’tseemtostop-! huhH’KTSCHHh! ‘GKKSCHH! hah-hAH’KKTSCHHhiew!”
“Wow. Bless you, bless you, bless you,” Inej said with a sympathetic smile, “Oh, you’ve made a real mess of yourself there, Kaz.”
He lifted his hand to clean himself up, but tensed up at the pain. Inej leaned forward and gently helped his arm back down.
“Here, let me.”
“There’s a hahh-handker-’TSSCHhiew! Ugh. Handkerchief, in my coat.”
“That’ll be soaking wet, Kaz. I have tissues.”
She plucked a couple of tissues from the box she’d placed on Kaz’s desk and used them to gently clean up Kaz’s face. He sighed.
“You know I can do it myself,” he said thickly, voice muffled by the soft tissues in front of his face.
“I know you can, but is it going to do you any good?” Inej asked; a rhetorical question. She made sure to keep her touch on his face gentle. She knew how sensitive his nose could get. As if on cue, Inej felt Kaz’s nose flare under the tissues.
“‘Nej, I’m going to-” His breaths were rapid and shallow.
“I know.”
“But I don’t wanna sn- haHH’GKKTSCHHhew! haH’ISCHHhiew!” He cut himself off with two heavy, messy sneezes, right into the tissues in Inej’s hand. “Saints, I’m sorry,” he added breathlessly.
“Bless you, bless you. It’s okay.” Inej gently cleaned his face once again. The pure exhaustion in his coffee-brown eyes sent a pang of pity through her heart.
“You really don’t need to say ‘bless you’ every… hahh… every- oh- sorry, I’m- haHH’KKSHHHhiew!”
Inej smiled. “Bless you.”
Kaz rolled his eyes. Inej tightened her hand on his face slightly.
“Blow,” she instructed. Kaz looked up at her in disbelief.
“I really don’t think that’s-”
“You heard me,” she cut in, “By the sound of those sneezes, you need it.”
The dark haired man hesitated, but eventually leaned into the tissues with a sigh, and blew his nose heavily. Inej smiled sympathetically. Kaz emerged looking positively mortified.
“Never doing that again,” he muttered.
“You wouldn’t have had to if you didn’t insist on taking on that entire gang on your own,” Inej pointed out. Kaz shot her a look. She tilted her head at him, still smiling softly. “Now let’s get you bandaged up, okay?”
He nodded. Inej opened the first-aid box and pulled out a roll of wide bandages.
“Roll up your sleeve for me,” she said gently. He obliged.
Inej got to work wrapping his broken wrist in bandages - it was the best she could do, considering Kaz refused to let Nina see to him, at least for now. It wasn’t long before Kaz’s breath caught again. He turned his head away from Inej, trying his best to keep his hand still as she tended to it.
“Sorry- hahH’KKSCHHIEWhh!”
“Bles-” Inej started.
Kaz shook his head. “N-not done-” he said, panting. “hAH’KTSCHHUHh!”
His whole body shook with the force of each sneeze, his shoulders tensing and legs jolting slightly upwards. Luckily, Inej had finished wrapping his broken wrist, so she could stop to once again tend to Kaz’s nose. She pressed two fresh tissues to his face and massaged his nose ever so gently. His breath caught sharply.
“Don’t, that’s too- hahH-! Too gentle, I’m g-go--huHH’GKKSCHHHh! ‘SSCHHHhiew!”
“Oh, Saints, sorry. You really can’t stop, can you?” Inej said, still cradling his face with the thick wad of tissue.
“It’s the rain, or something. Apparently it really g-gets to… to… me-'' Kaz's eyes narrowed and Inej felt his nostrils flare desperately even through the tissues. His breath hitched.
“haAHhdt-! huh-hUH-huhHh- oh, S-saints, it’s not comi- haAH-!”
“Stuck, huh?” Inej teased, “Happens to the best of us.”
Inej decided to reuse her “too-gentle” massaging technique to ease Kaz along. Perhaps it worked a little too well - he exploded into a series of tearing, messy sneezes, each outburst just barely caught in Inej’s hand.
“haAHh’GNKTSCHHhuhh! ‘KKSCHHIEW! ‘SHHHhew! hah-hAH-hAHH’KZZSCHIEWhh! ‘IZZSCHHhiew!”
He was left panting, almost unable to catch his breath. Inej reached for a few more tissues, keeping the used ones braced to Kaz’s face in case of another incident. She now held a thick wad of tissues, pressed to Kaz’s streaming reddened nose.
“Bless you - I don’t even know how many times,” Inej said with a slight laugh. She cleaned up the rest of the mess that had gathered on his face with the tissues, all while Kaz’s cheeks turned pink in true mortification. Inej noticed this and added, “You don’t have to be embarrassed. This happens to everyone.”
She saw Kaz’s shoulders relax slightly and he exhaled slowly.
“Saints, that was awful. I’m sor-” he started.
“Don’t apologise. You know I value being able to care for you. I’m glad you let me.”
Kaz nodded silently. He leaned back in his chair, exhaustion now clear in his face.
“Let’s get to that other arm now, shall we?”

Hello there I love your writing, i just wanted to request a Kaz brekker x fem!reader where kaz and the reader get into a fight and kaz says something that really hurts the reader and then reader goes on days ignoring kaz, and fluff towards the end. Only if you want tho, have a great day :)
Everything You Need to Know
a/n - oooh, okay! It's not going to be the longest thing ever, but hopefully this is enough for you and thank you for the compliment xoxo ❣️
Warnings: arguing, yelling, a swear word and a rocky start to the fic
Tumblr media
He had just pulled the last straw, right out from under you.
You knew the heist had been extremely difficult that day, several slip ups making it so much harder to pull off, but you did manage, and now you weren't sure why he was so frustrated.
Simultaneously, you did know Kaz, so subsequently realised he was irked anything even had the chance to go wrong after his meticulous hours of planning.
He was a young mastermind, that was true, and he was also a perfectionist, wanting everything done to a specific level of detail, so when something went wrong, he'd almost rip his hair out trying to discover the flaw he had not accounted for.
The remaining Crow's mindset was a collectively shared one, an unanimous vote to put the terrible heist behind them and move on anew, but Kaz did not share this ideology. You didn't exactly either, desiring to fix the loophole so history would not repeat itself in another heist, but you never went to the concerning lengths the crime boss did.
He would hole himself up in his office for days, stewing in his anger as he would scour maps repetitively and eventually crumple them in his fisted hands, leather gloves taut against his knuckles.
Kaz desired to be on top deeply, almost alarmingly, but you would stick by him as long as he would let you, perhaps longer, and that was what you had been trying to do before he ruined it all.
"Kaz, hear me out. This was one, singular line of mistakes, ones that could only be made in this set of circumstances. That means none of this was to with your plots and ploys, okay?"
He raised from where he had been sat at his desk, leaning heavily on his cane as he responded, "No, (Y/N), it's not 'okay'! I should have had everything right, down to the names of the guards on duty, and so much went wrong!"
You sighed, quickly losing any dwindling hope you had remaining that you could convince him to let this go.
"Kaz... This was one time. One time. It will not affect your very lifestyle, even if you are currently quaking in your boots like a little boy afraid of spiders."
"Just leave. I need to hear myself think, and I can't do it with you buzzing around irritatingly!"
You stumbled at this, wondering if it would be better to drop the topic, but he continued before you could think.
Before he thought, too.
"You're constantly like a little fly, one that smothers me, checking to see if I'm okay, if I need coffee, judging if I need rest. I don't! I don't need anything! And I certainly don't need you! You understand? Was that simple enough to get through your thick skull! No! Alright then, I'll say it again. I. Don't. Need. You.
All you are is a pest. And an unwelcome one."
Tears blurred your vision and your hand went behind you to catch you if you fell, since he had been advancing menacingly while he spoke.
You scoffed spitefully, it coming out of your throat as heavy and thick as the hostile tension in the air, floating upon seas of sound waves as the simple sound echoed in his office, bouncing of the walls and duplicating, just as his words had.
You were sure you could still hear them amongst the ringing of your ears.
"Kaz Brekker. You had a hard day, and believe me I know how it feels. You realise it wasn't just you, right? Jesper almost got caught, I almost got shot! Shit hit the fan, okay!
You paused to inhale a short breath, not lasting for long enough of a duration to give him a chance to speak, "But I did not blow up like you, he did not blow up like you, neither did Inej or Nina! We went through the same situation you did and we are not using it as an excuse to yell at people! And really, don't even think about saying that was provoked because I was only trying to be there for you.
Obviously, I shouldn't have bothered, since your deciding to be such an ass about it. Come to me when you've got your behaviour in order, when you begin to act like the adult you are!"
You were certain everyone must be able to hear your outburst, but you felt immensely proud you had the strength to stand up to him.
So, without looking back, you spun on your heel and exited, slamming the door and almost breaking the hinges as you stomped away to your room.
He deserved it. Then why did you feel guilty?
Tumblr media
Even if that prickling of guilt had been present when you first yelled at Kaz, it was no longer there. Because it had been three days, three whole days, and the stubborn manchild hadn't apologised.
He had sent sorry glances your way, but you could tell for the previous two days, he was still pitying himself. And he shouldn't be.
He had verbally insulted you and pushed you to your limit. You had suffered enough, and responded perfectly reasonably, in a way that did not give him any insults he had not earned.
On the third day though, he seemed to be genuinely apologetic, but had made no true move towards you in any way.
"Come on, spill. What happened between you and your lover?"
Jesper.
Despite trying to fight the small smile creeping onto your lips, it appeared, even as you pursed them into a thin line. Then, the grin fell as you sighed heavily and ran a hand through your hair, choosing to focus on the knots you discovered as you spoke.
"He told me I smother him, I'm a pest and unwanted, really. That's pretty much it. I got upset when he compared me to a fly he seemingly wanted to swat, though."
Jesper's gasp was loud and you sent him a warning glance as it attracted a few Dreg's attention. He was quieter and more reserved, leaning forward conspiratorially as he asked, "He did what? You know, I don't care if he's my boss, I can somehow make it look like he had an accident if you so desire."
You laughed, although still mopey and upset sounding. Jesper was just relocating to your side of the table, ready to put an arm around your shoulder and pull you into his side comfortingly when a clearing of the throat was heard.
Your eyebrows raised, but you made no move to cross the room to Kaz, instead leaning further into the sharpshooter. You knew it was petty, forcing him to hopefully say something like an apology in public, so huffed and lifted Jesper's arm after a minute, before strolling over, maintaining your cool and calculated look.
"Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said and frankly, you shouldn't believe a word of it."
You were slightly annoyed he thought his words would have an impact, that you were sensitive enough to change your permanent mindset based upon them. Yes, in the moment you had been hurt, but you knew your worth.
And it was certainly more of that than a fly.
"Go on."
"Upstairs."
It was futile to try to pry anything out of Kaz amongst others, so you begrudgingly trudged up the stairs behind him, dragging your feet and probably scuffing the soles of your shoes.
When you reached his office and the door swung open wide, you gasped and your hands flew to cover your mouth as you stared.
Kaz had somehow managed to arrange all of your favourite gifts: rich and velvety textured chocolate that melted on your tongue, extremely scarce in the poorer side of Ketterdam; a bouquet of what seemed to be fresh roses, not at all withered or browned; and a small card.
This was his way of apologising along with his previous words and you accepted the gifts, knowing you had already forgiven him when he had spoken downstairs. It was not bribery, rather an apology gift.
As you hurried to his desk, you pointed at the card and other assorted items, "Are these for me?"
"Oh no, I was just going to buy all of those things for myself." Was his sarcastic reply.
You opened the card carefully and grinned at the message,
'I was an obnoxious moron, you matter to me more than a heist, and I should never have said the things I did not mean. I'll make sure I remember how precious you are now, and that you do too.
Kaz.'
"Why'd you open the card first? Most people make a beeline for the presents."
Your grin only widened into a beaming smile as you replied, "A card's personal. It tells you everything you need to know. Whether it be an apology or a birthday message, it's sincere."
Kaz was astounded at your sentimentality, and right then and there you both knew.
Squabbles aside, you'd be alright.

Ends of the Earth (Kaz Brekker x Reader)
Hope you enjoy reading! I had a lot of fun writing it :)
Warnings: reader gets shot, that's about it?
Genre: Angst to (minimal) Fluff
Word Count: 2126
You’re not sure how you could have ever expected him to return what you felt for him.
You and Kaz were essentially opposites- he was a hardened criminal, you were more of a person who just ran with the wrong people. He was mean and commanding, you were sweet and endearing. Where he’d kill people with no hesitation, you’d probably be torn over it for the rest of your life.
Though the Barrel seemed to have no room for someone as kind as you, you had found yourself to fit fine along with rest as someone to watch over the rest. Your skill of memorization was appreciated when Kaz needed to reflect back on a certain part of the plan, and besides, having someone counteract his cruelty was appreciated by the others.
Sometimes, like now, it was hard to be a part of the Crows. Watching Inej stand by his side, watching them work together like well-oiled parts of the same machine, it was bittersweet. You couldn’t help the jealousy that overtook you, but kindness was ingrained in you. You couldn’t hate him. You couldn’t hate Inej.
“So we’ll take them out there. Inej, I’m going to need your backup here.” His voice snaps you back into the moment.
“Got it.” She nods.
“Before then, though, You’ll be stationed here. Y/N, I’m going to want you to stick close to her. She can fight for the both of you in case anything goes wrong.”
You’re useless, you berate yourself. You’re going to need Inej to save you. Maybe if you could defend yourself the way she could, he’d like you more.
“Understood.”
“That should wrap everything up. We’ll meet at the usual spot tonight. We’ll take transport there and sneak in. From there, everything should go according to plan.”
Night quickly falls, and you’re all gathered.
“To reiterate, I’m going to go grab the paintings. Inej and Y/N, stick together and communicate when it’s safe. Jesper, you’re going to shoot out the lights when signaled, and make sure that carriages are ready when it’s time. Wylan, wait it out here with him. If all goes to shit, blow this place. Clear?”
Echoes of agreement echo from around you, and you nod. This should be an easy heist.
“Y/N, c’mon. Let’s head over this way.”
Inej takes your wrist and leads you to the edge of the building. Her stare is intimidating as she surveys the building, before turning back to you.
“I’ll scale the walls, and then I’ll use the rope to pull you up. We can wait on the top of the building for a bit, before slipping in through a window. That okay?”
Damn her for even being considerate to you. And you still have the nerve to be jealous over her. Her and Kaz are so similar- they’d be perfect for each other.
You still can’t find it in your heart to be completely happy about that.
“Y/N? You alright?”
“Huh?” you snap out of your reverie, and give a bashful smile. “Yeah, that’s good. I’ll spot you. Hopefully I’ll be able to get up there…”
Inej throws you a reassuring smile back. “You’ll be okay.”
You watch with awe as she scales the building with no issue, truly living up to the nickname she had been given. She’s nearly invisible as she reaches the top, you note. She’s incredible.
You wait on the ground patiently as Inej lowers the rope, before you hear voices.
You stare up at her, wide-eyed, before running and diving behind a tree.
“The wine good tonight?”
It’s a guard. Your heart rate quickens, and bring a hand over your mouth. Quiet your breathing. If they catch you, you’re dead, and you’ll be the dead weight of this mission.
“I don’t know, haven’t had a drink yet. Maybe once everyone’s gone. Ha! The Stadwatch won't penalize me if there’s no guests to guard!”
“Yeah, that’s the spirit! All we have to make sure is no scum tries to steal the painting.”
“Like anybody would dare show their face here.”
The other guard laughs, and you wait with baited breath as they finally round the corner.
You check both directions, before you quietly slip out.
“Inej?” you’re quiet and slightly shaken. Death and capture was always palpable on these missions, but it had come swinging at you quicker than you had expected. “You still there?”
“Yeah,” her voice comes from above. “I’m here. You’re fast on your feet. Good thinking.”
“Thank you, and thank you for waiting.”
The rope drops down for the second time, and you take a hold of it, pulling yourself up with a bit of her help. Your hands finally grasp the ledge of the building, and Inej extends one of her hands to help pull you up. You’re hauled onto the rooftop, and though it’s a bit ungraceful, you’re okay.
“Thanks,” you whisper.
“No problem.”
Your eyes are both directed on the walkways below.
“You scout out for guards down there, and I’ll check for guards in the windows? We should signal to Kaz soon.”
“Sure.”
You keep a careful eye down below, hearing Inej scurry to different window points. You watch as she slips to one of them, peering through.
“Just our luck,” she mutters cheerfully. “This window’s fine. Let’s open it. I’ll go first, but send a flare for Kaz. I’m going to need that window open as soon as that flare goes up.”
“Alright.” You take a deep breath, before shooting the flare off. Inej thrusts open the window and pulls you in behind her.
You watch a figure walk past the doorway. That should be Kaz, and now, he should be slipping past you to go to the next doorway to take the painting-
“To the roof again, now-” Inej says, and starts to step out behind the boxes, and the figure turns back.
That’s not Kaz.
A click.
She’s going to be shot.
You’re acting on pure impulse and nerves when you shove her aside, and the bullet pierces through your shoulder. You crumble, and Inej tries to keep you from completely collapsing.
You grit your teeth. You’re trying not to let tears stream down your face, but everything hurts and Inej is over you and she’s saying something but you can’t hear her-
You try to force yourself to sit up, and you see a cane poised to hit the guard over the head. You turn away, and thank your murky hearing that you can’t hear the scream that emits from the guard.
Kaz.
“What happened?” His voice is losing it’s cool quickly.
“She was shot by the guard, I don’t think she’s quite registering it-” Inej’s voice is more panicked, but she forces herself to be analytical. “She’s going to need treatment, and quickly.”
“Okay,” he breathes in sharply. “Okay. Go down the hall, grab the paintings, and meet Jesper by the transportation. I’ll get her out.”
“Okay.”
Inej dashes down the hall, and he takes in your state. Your pupils are blown wide, and you’re trying not to cry, but it hurts.
“Kaz,” you breathe out. “Thank the Saints. Is Inej okay?”
He frowns at that. What about Inej? Inej was fine, you’d been shot. Did you have no self-preservation instincts?
“Inej is fine,” he mutters.
“That’s good,” you sigh out. “That’s good. I don’t quite think I’m going to make it out here alive, so just in case I don’t, I love you. Though I’m glad she’s okay, for your sake.”
His frown deepens. “I’m sorry? For my sake?”
“You’re in love with her. She with you. You guys can live your happy ending. As happy as the Barrel can get, anyway.” Your smile is slightly delirious, and he knows you’re not thinking rationally.
“Stop talking.”
“I’m sorry, are you mad at me? Please don’t be mad at me. I didn’t-” you cough, “think I’d die, but if it’s for you and Inej, then I think it’s worth it.”
“Nobody is worth your life,” he nearly yells. “You’re not going to die, Y/N. I won’t allow it.”
“Please, just let me stay here. They’re going to find you if you don’t.” “I don’t care.”
He’s pulling off his jacket and carefully using it as a tourniquet for your shoulder.
“Can you walk?”
“Kaz, please-”
“Can you walk.” It’s a statement, maybe a threat.
“Maybe- maybe with a bit of support,” your words are weak. You’re running out of time. “The world looks sideways, though- face it, Kaz, I’m not going to make it. I don’t want to be dead weight, your touch aver-”
“I’m not going to combust into fucking flames if you lean on me! Goddamnit, let me help you!”
His anger startles you. You hold back more tears as he pulls you up. At least he took the care to pull you up by the other arm. “Okay.”
The world is spinning and his face isn’t clear, and time seems to speed up as both of you go through the hallways, finally meeting Jesper and Inej in the courtyard.
“Bloody hell,” Jesper mutters.
“Go. To the White Rose. Nina should be able to do something.” Kaz leaves no room for argument. You’re passed out now, and he’s almost thankful you can’t feel anything as the carriage rushes through harsh weather and bumpy roads.
I don’t quite think I’m going to make it out here alive, so just in case I don’t, I love you.
Were you that oblivious? Did you think he was in love with Inej? How could you be so blind?
How could you sacrifice yourself so he could live what you thought to be a “happy ending”?
You didn’t plan it, did you?
He carefully takes off one of his gloves, hovering his hand over your forehead.
You’re still warm.
He doesn’t believe in Saints, but now, he’s almost praying to them that you’ll be okay.
Please be okay.
...
Inej glances at Kaz, standing over her in the White Rose.
She’s been out for days at this point. Nina could only do so much, with whatever corpse-like power she’d gained. The rest had to be natural healing.
Inej clears her throat. “She’d go to the ends of the world for you. For your happiness.” Kaz remains still.
“Don’t make her do so again.”
..
Your eyes flutter open, the brightness of the room nearly rendering you blind.
Your shoulder hurts like a bitch, but besides that, you’re alive.
Happiness and heaviness fill your heart at once. You’re alive, you’re okay. What had you said to Kaz in your state?
Hopefully nothing stupid.
“You’re awake. I’m glad.”
Kaz’s voice comes from the edge of the room. He’s leaning on the wall, cane in hand. When was Kaz upfront with his emotions?
“Yeah. How long was I out for?”
“A couple of days.”
“Days?” Your voice cracks. “I didn’t think it was that bad.”
That’s a lie. You thought you were dead, for sure. He doesn’t have to know that.
“...Right.” He’s skeptical, but pushes himself off the wall and makes his way over to you. “This may be a bit early, but would you want to go for a walk?”
“Sure.” Is he kicking you out of the Crows? Why would he want to go on a walk just after you’ve woken up? You’re screwed.
He waits for you to stand, and then you’re both walking side by side, into the gardens of the courtyard. He doesn’t say anything, just leads you to a small place under an apple tree. A picnic blanket is spread out, with a small basket laying on top of it.
Your eyes widen in surprise, and a brief smile flashes across his face. “Nice, isn’t it?”
“Kaz- what is all of this?”
“You said you loved me.”
Horror paints across your face, and you lower your head in shame. “I’m sorry, I didn’t, I wasn’t thinking. I’m sorry, I know you love Inej, that- was a bit unprompted of me, I’m sorry-”
He blinks at your rushed words. “Y/N. I’m not in love with Inej. She’s part of the Crows, as are you. Though- if you mean it,” he clears his throat, “that you love me- then take this as a surprise first date.”
Your expression morphs into a shy smile. He’s probably not ready to say it back. It doesn’t matter. He feels the same way.
“Happy first date, then.”
You’re both talking and eating, small smiles on both of your faces, a stark contrast to the harsh atmosphere of Ketterdam. It doesn’t matter to him. You’re alive, you’re safe, and you’re with him. You’d go to the end of the world for him. He’d do the same for you.
He loves you.

--------------------
It took a long time for Kaz to admit that he loved Y/N Fahey, a very long time indeed. And in the end, well he resorted to yelling it in her face.
How chivalrous.
It was a few months after the whole Alina scenario, and it marked a good year since Y/N and her twin had abandoned the likes of high academia society to slum it with gang bosses and the criminal side of things. Jesper lived highly over gamble tables, Y/N watching his back and laughing as she was chased through dark streets with whatever Brekker’s prize was that night.
Last time, it was a very expensive looking DeKappel. Y/N and Kaz worked together more than the others, their brains just complimenting each other. They worked well, they flowed, even when the girl made awfully cheesy jokes and infuriating sarcastic quips. Kaz Brekker couldn’t deny the girl was born with a criminal calling.
And somewhere along the way of late night scheming under candlelight and sharp coffee’s into the am, Kaz Brekker, Bastard of the barrel, proclaimed demon, Dirtyhands, fell in love with the annoyingly charismatic character of Y/N Fahey.
Not that he ever thought he would admit it, until that night.
The mission had been simple: Break into the Stadwatch office in the east stave and steal the documents Kaz’s employer had requested in exchange for a shit load of cash. Apparently, a certain Mercher had taken to selling on the black market. The Stadwatch had sniffed around, and now the desperate rich man needed some thugs' help to avoid Hellgate by burning all the evidence.
All in a day's work, however, they were now trapped in the office building, with a certain number of guards surrounding them outside.
Jesper cursed, “What now then, boss? If we go out there then they see our faces and we’re done for. This face can’t survive Hellgate.”
Y/N tried to cough down an entirely all too inappropriate laugh as her brother waved his hand over to inej, continuing. “I mean, Inej has the cloak. She’ll be fine. At least she can continue on with our legacy when the rest of us get locked up. Never to be seen again.”
He was so melodramatic, but even Y/N had to admit that she was scared, the plan was not supposed to go like this. Even plan O didn’t cover this situation. And Kaz hadn’t gone through any further letters of the alphabet.
Speaking off, the boss scowled at her twin. “We aren't getting locked up Jesper. Just let me think.”
Inej sared a look with Y/N, one that meant nothing good, as she peaked out of one of the high windows, she was standing on a pile of crates, precariously holding her balance to get a view of the outside, “They’re getting something to break the door down, Kaz. We haven’t got the time.”
Y/N looked to her brother, the way he was pacing the small office allowing for his trench coat to blow behind him slightly, the way he was fiddling with his bowler hat. He looked up and shared a look of stomach dropping fear with his sister. “They separate siblings in Hellgate.”
Without taking her steady eyes off of him, she gestured an arm out to inej. “Give me your coat Ghafa.”
She could hear Inej let out a confused mumble before she felt the fabric in her hands, slipping it over her shoulders while still not letting her eyes slip from her brother. “There are two entrances Jes, They’re covering both.”
The boy barely nodded, a mix of anticipation and confusion on his features. The room was silent, everyone was listening, she could feel 2 extra pairs of eyes at her back. “They have the whole place surrounded, so they’re covering both.”
A nod.
“But they don’t know how many people are in here. For all they know it could just be one.”
Kaz went to interrupt, his voice tight and gruff. “Y/N-”
She ignored him, still looking at Jes. “I go out one door with this hood covering my face, they’ll all come running. It will leave the back entrance open for you.”
Her twin's face had never held so much horror. “No-”
She cut him off with a simple hand in the air. “Outside of the backdoor, there’s a latch leading to the roof, it’s moulded shut but we both know you can handle that. Get up there while I hold off the guards, then throw me a rope and haul me up. Inej knows rooftops, she can handle it from there.”
A dumbfounded silence coated the room, and she finally dragged her eyes away from Jesper. Only to face a furiously stubborn Kaz.
“No.”
To be fair, it had been an excellent plan, and in her eyes, he had no reason to deny it. So she saw red. Anger was very present in her tone. “What do you mean no?!”
“I mean no. Fahey. It’s too dangerous.”
“Do you have any better ideas?”
He fell into an irritated silence. “Let me think.”
A certain amount of yelling sounded around the main door, and she sent the boy a look of anxious alarm, he just stood there, his brown hair resting at his brow bone and his dark eyes unmoving. He was staring at her. No, that was stupid. He just couldn’t get off of his damn high horse. “We don’t have time.”
He swallowed, his lips forming an attractive thin line. “You’re not doing it.”
Y/N waved her arms around the room in a show of exasperation, “why not!”
He stepped forward slightly, his cane tapping against the hardwood (possibly mahogany) floor. “Because.”
Y/N took a step closer too. “Because?”
Jesper released a very forced-sounding cough, eying them both all too knowingly before pulling Inej over to the corner, starting a discussion on how long the door could hold.
It led the two of them to have a very tense whispered argument they both felt was about to go down.
The bastard of the barrel met her own dark eyes, looking over her slim (but tall) frame. “Because I care about you.”
It was so quick and forced she almost didn’t catch it. She resorted to staring at him, dumbfounded. This couldn’t be happening, not when she’d resorted so much of her energy pushing down those stupid feeling about him. He mustn't have meant it like that. “Yeah, Kaz, we’re friends.” She said it in such an overly obvious tone she hoped it would disguise the panic in her tone.
He sucked in a breath, “I didn’t mean it like that Y/N.” He looked over to make sure Jesper and Inej were properly distracted. “l-” He hesitated, like it was a struggle to admit such a weakness.
Meanwhile, Y/N felt like her chest just might explode, so she decided to drop the overly obvious act and skip straight to the joking tone she always had. “You Love me?” A smirk played on the girl's lips, watching as the bastard of the barrel nodded, almost ashamed, prepared for whatever rejection she would give him.
He was so distracted with his proclamation, he didn’t realise she was now, too, by the main door with the others. Jesper and Inej stepped back. “Well good thing I love you too, Brekker.” She said, before opening the door, throwing up her friend's hood, and slipping outside. Leaving him both happy and incredibly annoyed.
That damn Fahey girl.

Y/N spent the next day trying to catch up with everyone from her past, seeing old friends and even training the new Grisha that were volunteering for the army.  It was refreshing after being forced to play a role she hated for so many years.  She felt freer than she had in a long time and she felt herself coming out of her shell more.  She struck up an instant friendship with Nina as the women trained the up and coming Grisha and she finally asked about Kaz's time in Ketterdam more. "So in Ketterdam you were a servant?" Y/N asked, staring at Nina surprised.  "And I knew Kaz was in the Dregs but he wasn't the actual leader?" "I was an indenture," Nina corrected.  "And no, Kaz was second in command to Per Haskell and well, I guess since Per didn't survive the assault Kaz is sort of in charge now.  He probably said he was in charge to impress you."   Y/N blushed and tried to brush it off. "I don't think Kaz goes around thinking about how to impress me," she said, sitting down at the dinner table with her plate of food.  Nina smiled and shook her head. "Look, we all know that you and Kaz have a thing, Jesper can't keep his mouth shut, but we've all agreed that we don't want to say anything because no one wants to die by caning," she said.  "So yes, Kaz Brekker thinks about impressing you, and apparently stalks you since that's about the 6th time I've seen him looking at you since lunch."  She nodded her head towards the line for food where Kaz was standing.  When Y/N looked and saw him he looked at Matthias as if he had been listening to what the giant was saying.   Y/N shook her head and looked back at Nina.  "I'm impressed that you somehow broke through that icy wall he has around him." "I don't think I broke it, feels kind of like I just found a small door and crawled through," she said.  "I mostly just want him to be happy, well as close to happy as Kaz Brekker gets.  Though I'm not made of kruge so I doubt he's that happy." "Who knows, maybe he likes you more than kruge," Nina said.  Both women started laughing, drawing some attention to themselves.  Jesper and Inej soon joined them with Wylan coming soon after.  Matthias was next and finally Kaz.  He approached the table and cleared his throat.  Wylan looked up from his spot next to Y/N.   "What?" he asked, noticing the murderous look on Kaz's face.   Y/N rolled her eyes but smiled.   "Move merchling before he gets angry," Jesper said, pulling Wylan closer to him.   "I don't know how you tell...he always looks angry," the boy grumbled as he started eating.   Y/N saw Kaz throw him a look before he started eating himself.
A few minutes into the conversation about the possible job that was going to be given to the Dregs Wylan threw a hand up and it smacked Kaz's shoulder.  Kaz had let down his guard some, not really paying attention and didn't expect the interaction.  He paled and felt a little dizzy for a moment, the world going a little fuzzy.  He hadn't had an incident like this in a long time.  He had come to expect the small bumps and touches from others and braced himself all the time for them.  Now however, after the journey and him having held hands with Y/N last night, he had let down that guard thinking he was getting better, but this proved him wrong.  No one else seemed to notice that he was struggling and he was glad, he didn't want them to see his weakness so clearly on display.  He had to recover quick but at the moment he didn't know how, his vision wasn't refocusing and he could feel his chest closing, feeling sickness rising in him.   "Kaz, listen to me."  Her voice, he heard it in his head.  At least he thought that's where it was.  "Breathe.  Breathe again.  One more time.  Now close your eyes and open them.  Look at me."  He did as she said and when he opened his eyes and looked at her he saw they were alone at the table.  She smiled at him.  "I told them you were still tired from the journey, they went to set up a fire circle for tonight, asked for us newcomers to join them."   "Alright," Kaz said.  He was still focusing on her voice, letting her talk and letting the sound ground him.  From the way she was looking at him he thought that she knew what he was thinking so she kept on the conversation for them both.  They wanted her to bring her guitar, wanted to hear her sing something.  She hoped she didn't embarrass him with her song choice, it was going to be a silly thing she had written while in school.   "Do you think you can stand and walk, they're waving us over now," she said.  He hadn't realized it had gotten truly dark already.  He was going to need to be better about keeping  his guard up, he couldn't let something like that happen again.  He nodded and stood, leaning more on his cane then normal.   Y/N rose and kept a good distance between them, giving him space that he desperately needed and he appreciated her for it.  They worked their way to the other Dregs and sat on seats around a roaring fire.
"Could have used your help with this thing Miss Inferni" Matthias said, giving her an annoyed look.  Nina elbowed him in the ribs.   "I could light your coat on fire if you really want to use my powers like I'm a trained dog," Y/N shot back, sitting down.  Jesper had run to her tent and gotten her guitar.  He sat down and handed it to her.  Kaz sat down next to her and she felt his mood shift, his panic attack was over and he was back.  He looked at her and nodded, confirming he was alright and she nodded back. "Play the song, I think we all want to hear it," Wylan said.  The others murmured agreement and Y/N blushed.  This song was so dumb and she was going to be mortified but she had promised. "Alright so remember I wrote this when I was around 14 so its going to sound like silly fantasy nonsense," she said.  She tuned the guitar a little bit to make it sound brighter and started playing.  It was more upbeat than anything she had played recently and she was really struggling with getting the rhythm down until she heard someone playing what sounded like drums near her.  She looked up and Wylan had a bowl and some spoons and was making a beat for her to play too.  'Thank you' she mouthed to him and he smiled brightly back as he kept playing.  She finally found the beat and started to sing.
"I got myself a notion, one I know that you'll understand To set the world in motion by reaching out for each other's hand"
She teasingly reached out to Kaz, a smile on her face so he knew she was playing.  She expected him to blow her off, roll his eyes and look away, but to her surprise he actually squeezed her hand for just a moment before pulling back.  She felt her heart do a little leap in her chest.  It was one thing for him to touch her in private, where no one could see, but out here with friends was another story, he was comfortable with her and was showing it around others.  The others didn't seem to notice as they were having fun moving in their seats, sometimes making wooping noises to the music as she kept singing about love saving the world.  It was silly but it made everyone smile and that was what she was hoping to do.  They deserved this time to bond as friends again. As the song ended they heard a mocking clapping from nearby.   Y/N turned to look at who was ruining this moment and saw an older man who looked rough, and well, his eyes held evil in them, covered in a thin layer of cruelty.   "That was lovely, just so sweet to see the Dregs back together," he said, voice light, like he was talking to old friends.  Inej stood up, folding her arms. "Not now Rollins, we will speak later," she said.  It clicked for Y/N who this was.  Pekka Rollins.  The man who had nearly destroyed Kaz.  Rage roared inside her and she stood abruptly.  She could feel the anger radiating off of Kaz next to her but he was controlling himself, biding his time.
"O, want to give me a private show little lady?" Pekka said.  This brought Kaz to his feet.  He had felt more then seen the rage that had filled Y/N when she realized who this was.  He was practiced at containing his malice for Rollins but she wasn't.  When she stood he stayed seated, hoping that Rollins would just finish whatever business he came here for and then leave.  Apparently that wasn't going to happen. "What business?" Kaz asked like they were in Ketterdam again.  He figured that's not how things worked around here but it would hopefully remind Rollins of whatever he came here to do.  Rollins laughed. "Living in the past my friend, time to catch up.  I just came to thank you Brekker, breaking me out of that Fjerda prison saved my life.  If I hadn't be escaping I wouldn't have heard those Second Army shits talking about demolishing Ketterdam.  Thanks to you I got most of my crew out, sorry about yours though, shame you couldn't get them out," he said.  Kaz took a deep breath, remembering that his time to kill Rollins was fast approaching.  He would do it in secret of course, take his time in the night and make sure that by morning the body would be unrecognizable.  This mantra kept Kaz from striking the bastard right here.  But it didn't keep Y/N at bay.   Before anyone could react she threw a large rock right at Rollins's face, cracking him in the nose.  Blood poured and he cried out in anger and pain. "You bitch!" he said.   Y/N had a fireball in her hand ready to fire. "Leave now, your business here is finished," she said, becoming every inch the Darkling's second in that moment.  Kaz could see her where someone evil, someone like him, could trust her, deep inside she was the same, she just worked to suppress those traits while he relished in them.  Rollins took the hint and walked away, some of his crewmates coming over to help, glaring at Y/N as they left.   Kaz and Y/N sat down again and they looked at each other.  He was asking her to help him kill Pekka Rollins, tonight, without saying a word.  She understood him completely and nodded. "Tonight," she said.  He wished she hadn't spoken it aloud but it didn't really matter. "You can't kill him Kaz," Inej said.  He looked at her with raised eyebrows. "His death is mine to collect," he said.  "I call the shots for the Dregs and I saw when I take a life."  Inej took a breath and he saw her change, her demeanor becoming one of a leader, ready to compete with him instead of work under him. "It doesn't work like that here Brekker," she said.  "Pekka Rollins did get most of his crew out so our people from Ketterdam joined together, everyone was a Dime Lion or a Dreg and we were forced to become partners.  If you kill Pekka Rollins then those sides will start infighting and this resistance already has enough of that.  Leave him be, a Dreg cannot kill a Dime Lion."  Kaz gripped his cane tight and stood, turning and walking a few steps.  He stopped and glanced back, knowing that Y/N was following him.  He let her catch up to him and they walked back to his tent. "I have a plan," she said as they entered.  Kaz looked at her a little surprised and a little proud.   "Let's hear it," he said.  He knew they probably were thinking of the same plan but he would let her have the credit for it. "I'll get Rollins, if I had to subdue him I will but with how he looked at me I think he'll come willingly.  We got out of camp and then you can have your revenge.  I'll burn the body after.  If he's found everyone will think I did it and after my display tonight I'm sure no one would be surprised.  I'll make sure to distance myself from you and the Dregs out there, make sure they can't pin it on you guys," she said.  Kaz smirked and nodded. Well, think you can work your magic in about an hour?  Head out of the camp and go east, I heard there's a hut there for skinning animals, I think I'll borrow it," Kaz said, feeling the sick thrill of knowing he was going to do something truly horrifying.
