The Patience of Ordinary Things
by Pat Schneider
It is a kind of love, is it not?
How the cup holds the tea,
How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare,
How the floor receives the bottoms of shoes
Or toes. How soles of feet know
Where they’re supposed to be.
I’ve been thinking about the patience
Of ordinary things, how clothes
Wait respectfully in closets
And soap dries quietly in the dish,
And towels drink the wet
From the skin of the back.
And the lovely repetition of stairs.
And what is more generous than a window?
Expanding on last post a bit as far as specific magic goes, think of it less as “this is a setting where mages are persecuted”- especially since in this context everybody has some amount of nascent magic. You can be debatably underleveled for your age due to circumstances, but basically every single person has an elemental sway, whether or not they cultivate it.
Ideally on paper Argent’s job is to prevent people from abusing specific highly lucrative forms of dark magic, like some guy in the middle of nowhere declaring himself the king of squids and holding major shipping lines hostage by commanding krakens to guard harbors. Public opinion of the inquisitors is generally high- that it’s a necessary and illustrious job. This is a prestigious position for Argent to have secured at a young age and even if he’s poorly-regarded by his coworkers and subordinates, it’s that a lot of those coworkers and subordinates are people from noble families who take badly to literally taking orders from some jumped-up brat from nowhere with his ugly little pet.
(Also it’s that Argent is himself pretty bad at talking to others / kind of highly insufferable in his default communication style)
In practice, well, see the whole, the entire countryside is shaken up from the previous Lord of Darkness. A lot of my goal here is to not just “what if the light guys were evil and the dark guys were good” but to actually examine it as a logistical followthrough of a ‘proper, ordinary, heroic’ quest of light vs. dark- especially one that had a really rough go of it. Kard died so his friends could survive the ‘penultimate boss’ and Hero left the final fight permanently disabled.
So Hero and Maenad did have as good intentions as you could reasonably expect of teenagers going through hell- and while they know it’s dirty business to try and kill Taylor before the latter “did anything”, they made an exception because they’re pretty sure Taylor is a time bomb that’s going to hatch into another once-in-a-lifetime apocalypse like they barely staggered out of last time, and have been trying to rebuild the kingdom ever since.
The inquisitors, in intention, are an anti-dark lord task force; they’re people given tools and orders and coordinated so that a group of plucky teenagers don’t have to solo the end of the world again. In that sense, they’re fairly noble intended, compared to true historical inquisitors who were generally more occupied torturing and threatening people to make sure everything stayed in order. But I picked that title for a reason- even if it’s well-intended, the end takeaway is still that people with a lot of power are scared of losing control, and think it’s okay to cut into their citizens’ lives a little bit more.
After all, Taylor was targeted purely for their raw potential- Hero and Maenad didn’t exactly wait long enough to realize Taylor was the seamstress’s apprentice and only used their power to help granny down the street with her arthritis, and once they- from the village’s perspective- killed an innocent child, their investigation in the matter was not exactly welcome.
i did not have much to do today so i took some time to relax and read a magazine. since lectures just started my workload is minimal and i still have a bunch of free time to practice my instruments and language skills, let's see for how long that holds up..
the moon always makes me smile. i’m smiling extra big because la luna is orange tonight.
(This is basically me rambling about Flora and Fauna. Read on if you would like, but know that its more or less just an infodump. I just really wanted to talk about my children XD)
I’ve been thinking a lot about Flora and Fauna, especially in how they view the multiverse. So, their entire reason for existing- the reason the Tree of Feelings/Nim gave its life to bring them into being- was to restore Dreamtale and to help save their brothers. The two goals honestly give them lightly conflicted views on the out!codes and the rest of the multiverse.
So, Flora and Fauna know- whether by instinct or what little knowledge the Tree gave them- that they are way too weak to pursue the ladder goal. They’re more or less aware that something bad happened to Nightmare, and it’s going to take a long time to help him. (They’re aware of his corruption in some part, since they have emotional connections to he and Dream. They just don’t understand what that means, nor how they can help him with it. Only vaguely are the younger twins aware of the nature of the corruption, and that it makes Nightmare dangerous) Therefore, they know that their main goal- while they’re still young and weak- is to tend to the fallen Dreamtale. And they do! They’re very efficient in restoring it, although it will never be the same with Dream, Nightmare, and the Tree of Feelings gone.
This leads me to think a lot about how they view the multiverse. They’re mostly indifferent, since all they were designed for was to care for Dreamtale. Unlike Dream, they don’t really think much on the lives of other universes. It’s not really their business. Sure, if they were told about those worlds, they might feel sympathetic towards them. But they don’t feel compelled to help, unless it somehow benefits them or their own world. As for out!codes... they’re alright with both Ink and Error, so long as neither of them interact with Dreamtale. Ink is cool, but they’re wary of him because of his lack of a soul (Flora is less put off by it, since they handle plants all the time, and plants can be good and beneficial without a soul. Fauna, however, is extremely uneasy about it. It’s unnatural, and it makes trusting him difficult).
Error is actually cooler to Fauna than Ink is. Fauna is able to sympathize with him due to the nature of his soul (Fauna understands that souls are really complicated things, and for his soul to be so damaged, it makes sense that he wouldn’t be very friendly). The two are actually not at all put off by his destruction. In fact, they understand it! (To some degree.) The twins recognize that destruction, and death, are simply a part of the life cycle. No, they don’t think killing healthy AUs is alright, but they understand if it’s a suffering or broken world. (Again, Fauna sympathizes. Error isn’t okay, so naturally he’s going to be very unhinged, and he’s going to do very questionable things. They know that this really can’t be helped. They also sympathize greatly for his victims, but that’s to be expected)
Overall, the twins don’t really mind what is going on in the multiverse as long as they are left out of it. They’re welcoming to visitors, but only those who don’t wish to harm Dreamtale. Flora and Fauna really only wish to maintain balance in their world, and consider Dream and Nightmare responsible for maintaining balance in the rest of the universes.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading XD if not, that’s okay too ^^ I just love rambling about my children
