As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.

#imperial radch #also a great example of the 'you don't have to be Tolkien' phenomenon #if you want to think about linguistic differences by building all the languages in your setting #and being able to explain what those differences are through actual texts in the language in question #that's AWESOME #but it's not the only way to do it #it's also interesting because of course this style only works in book form #everyone's speaking different languages but in a written account they're all 'translated' for you #but of course if it was a TV series they would all have to be speaking a language the audience understands #(or you *would* have to go wild with conlangs)#and i think that's really cool as well--#how for a series where song is so central we don't actually hear any of the actual in-universe words or any of the music #it's all been filtered #and again you know this is happening but seeing the examples of how real songs--the shape hymns and 'L'homme Arme'--are presented #makes you a lot more viscerally aware of how limited your perspective is #it's good #ann leckie i love you

I've been thinking about this a lot!!! Since he's not human, he doesn't get sick like we do:

He's aware we call it being sick, but his term is 'feeling withered/wilted.'

He doesn't have a temperature, but his skin turns pale and blemished like a diseased plant, and gets kinda slimy and cold like a frog's.

No energy, no appetite, barely talks. Very zombie-ish.

He gets real drowsy and dazed and the only thing to motivate him is seeking out warmth.

He just needs sunshine and sleep to get better so you'd find him laying out in the sun during the day and hiding away in blankets at night, sleeping it off. He only eats once a day, since his body needs rest rather than sustenance.

He's not used to asking someone to care for him, but in this state if MC offered to help he'd honestly just ask you to keep him warm too with zero assumption as to what you might think. He's just a little too out of it to be embarrassed about it.

Hey Bugga, are you alright with people making posts using panels of BEAU (with credits and/or tags)? I assumed that you were because I saw since a lot of folks who did so were also tagging you directly, but just realized that I shouldn’t have made that assumption without checking first!

I don't mind. If someone reposted an entire part of the comic (aka the whole ~10ish panels of one of my posts) with the intention of replacing my post version of it, that'd be a problem, but I haven't actually seen that happen. Posting individual panels or sets of panels for reaction/analysis is fine with me!

The jump btwn the second to last and last always surprise me whenever I make one of these because I always forget to take snapshots after I start painting. It's always like: oh yeah heres the lineart with some colors- BOOM fully finished✨️

What he's holding are the Austrian imperial scepter and orb, seen below:

I was going to draw the crown too but decided I don't hate myself that much(maybe some other day), and gave him a golden laurel crown, bcs I'm obsessed with that as a motif, and also its very remincient of the boy king statue that started this whole thing!

There's some symbolism of this, both intentionally but also just historically. I love that the orb represents that the monarch is holding the world in their hand, basically every old monarchy has one of those, and I think it's very cool for symbolism. But also bcs of that, I was forced to basically draw catholic fanart so, you win some you lose some. The star halo above him head is both to reference those religious statues with star crowns(I saw them a lot in Europe and they imprinted onto my brain), as well as: his four championships of course!

The thing that fucks me up when thinking about a Disco Elysium cow boy Au is that, does everyone keep their French names, are these French cowboys, Harry could stay harry but is last name is not very cow boy like,and Jean do we have to change it to John, because that feels wrong

Would, theoretically, their accents change, because I don’t think I could handle southern jean or kim, absolutely blasphemous

Musical Touken Ranbu: Tsuwamonodomo ga Yume no Ato english sub

A passion project if there's ever been one, it's been a longstanding want of mine to finally do this! Needless to say, Tsuwamono and everything it meant is still my favourite plot from Toumyu! I love its character-driven and intricate writing, its heartrending acting choices, as well as the way it invites one to think about what characters think and why, and why they do or don't (dare to) do the things they do.

However, another important reason that I'm letting myself indulge in this, is that recent Toumyu has taken a turn away from this plot, changing the way how Mikazuki is framed, tying different characters to themes that were tied to Kogitsunemaru, and put those characters into roles that would originally have been most natural for Kogitsunemaru to follow.

In that light, then, I hope that these subtitles will allow you to see, even if it's just the smallest sliver, what I loved in Toumyu's take of Kogi and Mika up to and including Kotobuki. To see that it was beautiful. Because I think it was. 💙💛🌙🦊

Keep in mind that the files in the folder below are only the subtitle files, timed and tled to the blu-ray and DMM senshuuraku distribution. The folder also includes a pdf with translation notes, some background information where I felt it would add, and just a little bit of eager gushing about the references made.

#touken ranbu #tsuwamonodomo ga yume no ato #toumyu #Water's translations #tsuwamono #Kogitsunemaru #Mikazuki Munechika #we're joining with sute's timeline in which Kogi (may as well have) never existed hahahaha (pain)#but let's put that aside and enjoy Tsuwamono for the beauty it is #I love tsuwamono and translating it has only made me love it more #the references to Kokaji in the starting song were much more intricate than I expected #and I believe the way Basho's haikus are incorporated is smart!#the many things Tsuwamono slyly implies about its worldbuilding are so so so so nice #and also the question of what it means to exist and to be remembered!#that things are never black and white and that even the people you fear may be hurt or will not understand may be different from how you se #and that (I think this is very nice about tsuwa) people make mistakes and make *choices* and that that's what makes them human #I very gently gesture at Mikazuki #I love how he's characterised and how Kuroba conveys that characterisation #He envies shadows and betrays his own advice and cannot lay the finishing blow #he forces smiles. His kindness sways his heart again and again to stab himself with it. He fights a futile battle. He tries anyway.#He lies- He fears- He doesn't speak-- in understandable fear of the devastation he may cause if his words reached the ears of those he love #He would rather risk breaking.#Mikazuki is such a complex and deafeningly HUMAN character and I love that painfully kind and undeniably human portrayal of him so much #and though a certain contrast with Mikazuki is a vital part of the way Kogitsunemaru enters the paintwork here it is ultimately the fact #that he was never black and white- that he ever sees the bigger picture ironically just as Mika said- that allows him to understand #even if with his own personal feelings and his discipline he can't follow the same road #this in deep contrast to Hizamaru- who would not even have hesitated or felt reluctant or even had to battle his feelings had he found out #and I think the relief of having someone dear to confide in- that's emphasized twice with Iwa in the myu- in the form of Kogi #is something that (up to TKO) would and should have meant the world to Mikazuki #that his unwillingness to follow the same path could much too naturally still have meant he could have supported Mikazuki in other ways

#I dont want it just to be “he doesn't hit me” as that's super important but they could end up with awful boys who don't hit them and still #mistreat them. there are certain vulnerabilities that make me worry the most for them. I can't believe there's people watching qsmp who hear the Spanish speakers and just go "well i don't know Spanish and there's nothing i can do about that. Guess I'll never know what they say". When Tahlulla said "then learn" cause quackity said he didn't speak Spanish, that was at y'all. If you can watch a 6 hour stream you can download doulingo and do a 5 minute Spanish lesson.
