SOMETIMES when my clients send work back to me that has been edited by their journal’s or publisher’s copyeditor, I am filled with righteous fury on behalf of said clients, many of whom have English as like a seventh language and are nevertheless producing brilliant work in English because that’s the language of academia in their fields.

It is a point of pride with me that I help my clients to keep their own particular authorial voices and to develop a style of writing in English that is distinctive and identifiable as theirs while being both grammatically correct and fluidly understandable to a native speaker. I’m also a huge advocate for clear and accessible scholarship regardless of what language you’re writing in, to the point that many of my long-time clients crack jokes about the kind of comments they know to expect from me.

So I hate it, I hate it with a fiery passion when copyeditors work very hard to anglicise my clients under the guise of “clarity.” They are not anglophone scholars. That is, in fact, a beautiful and desirable thing. And it is beautiful and desirable that their particular authorial voices are present on the page. Their work is clear and accessible, correct and fluid, but it is also distinctly and identifiably Arabophone work, Persophone work, Sinophone work, Turkophone work, Francophone work, and so on. The hegemony of English is the fucking worst, and I will personally fight every copyeditor on staff at some predatory journal who opts into being one of its foot-soldiers. And I mean that with every one of my teeth.

A/N: Question for the culture… part 3???

You stand leaning against one of the large cement pillars in the arena behind Laswell as she briefs the undercover agents on their task at hand. Under the dim light, sit 4 combat agents, courtesy of the CIA special forces. As Laswell speaks, you can hear the unwavering confidence in her voice, the way she lays out the plan with precision and clarity.

You scoff in your mind, thinking about how you swore you would never go back to the military, and yet here you were, letting the military come back to you. Funny how life worked that way. The Pit, once a symbol of your freedom and a way to leave the past behind, now becomes the stage for this dangerous dance with Al Qatala.

As Laswell continues, your mind drifts back to the memories of the past few days. The reunion with Simon had been bittersweet. The emotions were raw and overwhelming, yet it felt like coming home after a long journey. He understood you in a way that no one else could, and his presence brought a sense of comfort and support that you desperately needed.

But the weight of the mission still hangs heavy on your shoulders. The prospect of facing Al Asad again, of confronting the organization that once held you captive, brings a mix of fear and determination. It's not just about taking down the arms dealer; it's about reclaiming a piece of yourself that was lost in those dark days.

"Y/N?" Laswell's voice breaks through your thoughts, and you refocus your attention on her. "We need you to take the lead on the secondary extraction route. We can't afford any slip-ups."

You nod, snapping back into the present. "Got it, Laswell. I'll make sure everything is in place."

She gives you a reassuring nod before turning back to the agents. "Remember, this is a high-stakes operation. We need to be precise and quick. Any deviation from the plan could put all of us at risk."

As the hours pass, The Pit fills with spectators, the air buzzing with anticipation and excitement. The fights that take place here are raw and intense, but they remain off the books, hidden from the public eye.

This clandestine nature adds an edge of danger to the atmosphere, reminding you of the high-stakes mission that awaits.

In the backroom, you put on your gear, your mind focused on the task at hand. Just as you're adjusting the straps of your tactical vest, you hear the door creak open, and there stands Simon, his presence like a beacon in the darkness.

He looks at you, his expression a mix of concern and understanding. "I know that look." he says, his eyes locking with yours knowing your mind. His face is bare for the sake of the mission, which still shocks you a bit knowing the lengths Simon is willing to go for this operation.

You take a deep breath, the weight of the past weighing heavily on your shoulders. "Its the only look I got." you reply, your voice humorous but honest. After a few beats of silence you finally let out a breath you don't realize you're holding. "I'm sorry." You admit, meeting his gaze.

Simon's expression softens as he listens to your voice. He reaches out and gently cups your cheek, his thumb brushing against your skin. "We can't change the past, Y/N" he says, his voice tender.

You feel a lump forming in your throat, the weight of the past few years crashing down on you. "I should've said something before leaving." you admit, your voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't know how to deal with everything."

Simon pulls you into a comforting embrace, holding you close. "I should have fought harder for you," he murmurs, his words tinged with regret. "I let you go knowing it was what you needed, but I was angry for not being there for you when you needed me the most.”

You bury your face in his shoulder, feeling a mix of relief and sorrow washing over you. For so long, you had carried the burden of leaving him behind, thinking it was the right thing to do.

But now, as he holds you in his arms, you realize that you weren't the only one affected by the aftermath. Simon places a gentle kiss on your forehead, his touch sending warmth through your entire being. "I'll see you out there, Y/N." He says, before walking out.

As you walk towards the door, you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, and for a moment, you don't recognize the person staring back at you. The face in the reflection is strong, resolute, with eyes that hold a flicker of determination you haven't seen in a long time.

The dim light in the backroom casts a soft glow on your features, accentuating the lines of resilience etched into your expression. Your eyes, once clouded with uncertainty, now burn with a fiery resolve.

In this moment, you see the reflection of the person you were, the person you are, and the person you are becoming.

As you continue to study your reflection, a switch is turned inside of you. The weight of your past no longer bears down on your shoulders, but instead, it becomes the fuel that ignites the fire within. The determination in your eyes deepens, and you know that you are no longer running from your demons; you are facing them head-on.

"Y/N, all ready on your end?" Laswell's voice crackles over the comms.

"I'm ready."

Logan Paul also got the fourth most votes overall. USAF launches retaliatory airstrikes against Hezbollah military bases in Iraq 🇮🇶

On January 24, 2024, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had conducted air strikes against facilities used by the Kataib Hezbollah (KH) militia group in Iraq.

This action was a response to previous attacks attributed to the KH, including one at the al-Asad air base in western Iraq on January 20.

The attacks were initiated after a series of incidents involving Kataib Hezbollah (KH), including a missile attack on U.S. military bases. In retaliation, the U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles targeted several locations in eastern Syria and western Iraq. The U.S. attacks focused on three specific locations associated with KH and other groups affiliated with Iran, including its headquarters, storage facilities and training centers for rocket, missile and UAV capabilities.

One of the targeted sites was a KH military base in Jurf Al-Nasr, Iraq, known for storing a large hiding place of rockets and ballistic missiles, leading to several secondary explosions. Other attacks targeted at least six bases in the Iraqi provinces of Al-Anbar and Babylon, which were linked to the IRGC's Kataib Hezbollah, with the aim of degrading their operational capabilities.

In response to U.S. military actions, Abu Ala al-Walai, secretary general of Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, an Iraqi Shiite radical militia affiliated with Hezbollah, criticized the attacks. He called for increased actions against U.S. and Israeli targets, including a blockade of Israeli navigation in the Mediterranean Sea and attacks on Israeli ports, indicating a potential escalation in hostilities.

The Pentagon, represented by Secretary Lloyd Austin, described U.S. military attacks as "necessary and proportional", intended to prevent further attacks against U.S. troops and ensure their safety. These operations took place in the context of the increase in attacks on American bases in Iraq and Syria, marking an increase in hostilities that were relatively infrequent before the recent escalation in the Gaza Strip.

Simultaneously, tensions increased when Hezbollah recently launched an attack on an air traffic control base of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in Meron, northern Israel. This attack resulted in minor damage, but without victims, and was claimed by Hezbollah as retaliation against alleged Israeli actions in Lebanon and Syria. After that, the Israel Defense Forces strengthened their defensive measures in sensitive locations and conducted retaliatory attacks against Hezbollah and Iranian positions in Lebanon.

I don't have official skin swatches but I do have official descriptions for the TKP cast!

I'll add an additional official description for the GW cast too.

Bautista: Tall, well-muscled and square, and covered with a soft layer of pudge. Face shape that's somewhere between oval and square, black hair, black eyes. Their hair is cut short, and they're always seen with their dog tags. Red-brown skin. Their nose looks a little busted.

Nazeri: Average height (if a little on the tall side), lean, muscular in the way someone who does parkour is. Suntanned yellow-brown skin. Catlike pupils and bright, golden eyes. Asad has dark, curly hair he tends to slick back, and stubble. Amir and Asiyeh are both hijabi, and Amir tends to wear very loud patterns and a pair of (fake) glasses. Amir is a fan of frogs.

Devin: Short, and very softly, roundly built. Dark tawny skin, covered in freckles. They have very long, shiny, black 3B hair and a little chin stubble. They occasionally like to let it grow out into a goatee, but they don't like the feeling of having a mustache so their top lip is clean-shaven. Their eyes are a very bright, leaf green.

Trace: Average height and scarily skinny. Sharp triangular face, long limbs, long fingers. Brittle, thin platinum blond hair, porcelain white skin, and bright blue-gray eyes. The spaces between their fingers and the insides of their forearms have track mark scars, though they're not quite sure what they mean for this body.

Sibir: short, squat, heavily muscled but hides it under layers of clothing. Looks like An Average Guy, or at least tries to. Long black hair, black eyes, dark bronze skin. Square, chiseled face.

Lisandro: muscled but naturally so, walks with a cane, triangular, average height. Hooked nose. Warm ochre skin, wavy brown hair, partial hererochromia (one eye has a section of green — the rest is dark brown).

Idali: soft, hourglass shaped with a large, soft belly and rounded shoulders. Long, curly black hair in ringlets. Hooked nose. Tawny beige skin. Black eyes, moles on her face, arms, and legs. Average height.

Tesias: tall, lanky, lean. Thickly muscled legs. Pale, sickly beige skin. Wavy dark brown hair, grown to shoulder length and pulled back into a ponytail or Geralt of Rivia style half-up do. Wears a mask that hides the left half of their face and right eye. The mask has no eye hole on the left side. The right eye is covered with black mesh so you can’t see their eye color.

Temporary scaffolding that protects public transit riders from foul weather as they dash between the LRT and connecting buses at Hurdman and Tunney's Pasture stations is on the budget chopping block at Ottawa City Hall this week.

Soon after the Confederation Line was launched in September 2019, the city erected covered scaffolding on the bus platforms at the two stations. This is because the paths leading from the station doors to the buses are particularly long and riders found they were exposed to the elements.

The city has spent nearly $2 million renting scaffolding since it was erected. The price tag for this year alone is expected to be about $700,000.

Now, the temporary weather covering could come down as part of an effort to find $47 million in savings in this year's transit budget.

The possibility came as a surprise to several OC Tranpso riders who say they often walk or stand under the protective scaffolding at Hurdman.

"Um, wow," said Phil Barbosa when told of the plan."The scaffolding is actually pretty useful."

Barbosa takes the train from Tunney's Pasture to Hurdman, where he catches a connecting bus that he says can sometimes take 30 or 40 minutes to arrive.

"If it's raining, if there's hail, if there's snow, it does provide shelter," he said of the scaffolding. "Walking from the station all the way down here can be quite a trek with the number of people."

Amina Asad was also unhappy to hear that the scaffolding might be coming down.

"When it's raining outside, if it's snowing, people can just walk underneath it and get away from the weather," she told CBC. "I use it all the time, so I think people should keep it as a permanent thing."

The plan to tear down the scaffolding also came as a surprise to Alta Vista Coun. Marty Carr, like many residents in her ward, uses the station regularly as a transfer point.

"I wasn't aware and it's very worrisome to me that it's being considered," Carr told CBC following a marathon transit commission meeting earlier this month.

Ironically, that meeting began with a discussion about improving the scaffolding, which some find unsightly despite coloured tarps placed there by the city. In fact, the transit commission directed staff to report back on what a permanently covered pathway might look like, and what it might cost.

But Carr said she doesn't see how the current scaffolding can come down before a long-term solution is found.

"I think there'll be a lot of concern that the plan is actually to take the scaffolding away when residents have been asking for things to be made more permanent and to look better and be more reliable."

At Tunney's Pasture, the city had to borrow federal land to expand the bus platform. This was because the initial design proved too small to accommodate all the people who would be transferring between buses and the LRT. The larger platform means people have farther to go to get from the station to their bus stop. Therefore, the city erected scaffolding to provide protection from the elements.

Tunney's is currently the western terminus of the Confederation Line and has to accommodate all the buses from that side of the city. The Stage 2 western extension is currently slated to open in late 2026, but it has been 17 months late so far. At that point, the platform will be reduced and scaffolding likely won't be needed anymore.

Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper, whose ward includes Tunney's Pasture, said he'd like to hear from riders about how critical the scaffolding is to their commute.

The fact that scaffolding is on the chopping block is a sign of what Mayor Mark Sutcliffe called a "tight" 2023 draft budget, which the council is set to approve on Wednesday.

There are plenty of signs of penny-pinching in the city's $5.5-billion budget, from slightly shrinking heritage planning spending — despite a looming deadline to designate potentially at-risk heritage properties — to increasing councillors' traffic-calming budgets by 25 percent instead of doubling them as the mayor promised in last fall's election campaign.

Council has directed OC Transpo to freeze fares, raise taxes by just 2.5 percent and maintain service. To that end, OC Transpo plans to hire 52 net bus drivers. These drivers should be able to help reduce the number of bus cancellations, which can reach 400 on a bad day.

At the same time, the transit department is contemplating a $53 million shortfall in revenue due to an expected ridership of just 70 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels.

OC Transpo has had to find ways to cut costs. It's saving millions by retiring 117 old buses it doesn't use and another $42.7 million by deferring work on the delayed segments of Stage 2 and putting off annual contributions to certain capital funds.

Getting rid of the scaffolding is part of those savings, albeit a very small one. Even so, the city still needs at least $39 million from the provincial government to make the transit budget work this year.

So I don’t usually talk about the king aka Shigaraki in my rants...so I want to reticify that.

Before I move on...just to be clear. I do love Shiggy. This is not me being a hater and if you have a different opinion about Shiggy...ok. That’s valid.

My main grip about Shiggy... is how he has no real end goal. I know people here on tumblr have analyses, essays and whatnot about how Shiggy must be the Messiah that will get rid of bad heroes or capitalism or anything like that.

I like this idea. I would read a fic like that.

The problem is when people really think in Hori’s canon...Shiggy is indeed a messiah who will set all the fair people free from the unjust system.

Like, dont we all live in a shit society? I can’t speak for all but in my country we rather revult about Superman’s son kissing a man than...a genocide president who mock the victims of covid.

And yeah in moments like this....is nice going to escapism. People facing na evil ruler/regime and bringing real changes for the kingdom and everyone is happy.

I get it. I like those stories.

But on Shiggy’s part. On Hori’s canon part...we dont know what HE wants.

Duh he wants destruction. One may say.

Ok...he wants to destroy the heroes....ok then I ask

Does he want a literal destruction? Are we rooting for a villain who wants to commit genocide?

(In the war arc he did many bad thinga and yes we can say “AFO controlled him” sure but he still had some control over his action to a certain point and he shows no remorse)

Does he wants a metaphorical destruction?

Does he plans in making something anew?

What Shiggy wants? ( aside a fine 🥦)

We dont know...we will never know as AFO is treating Shiggy as his flesh puppet for reasons unknown for us.

I know there are many posts saying “shiggy will end the corruption” and I have to say...NO HE WONT. Not on Hori’s canon.

Shiggy’s motivation/goals arent totally his. His father hated heroes. AFO increased that to 11.

Shiggy is not speaking about the flaws of the hero society to everyone but more about how the society failed him. How no one saved him.

(He wanted to be saved by Zuzu but...headed by Hori...look if Hori had made them inferact and had a relationship that would have been amazing but, again, headed by Hori 🙄)

Shiggy speaks about his pain and trauma and I notice how the victims in the story need to be shut and accept their abuser ( case point, look at how hori treats Izu)

Shiggy is vilanize and abused by the narrative for daring to want revenge on his pain.

And again, headed by hori, its a bit hard to forgetten Shiggy’s action and LoV’s (Says the person who likes the idea of them winning with Zuzu)

This make me think of MCU Loki...and how he killed many people in the first avanger’s movie.

Sure. He killed of screen and all are faceless and nameless but here the thing...if we are to accept Loki was brainwashed by Thanos...even so, he indirectly killed those people....does he feel remorse?

Bc LoV and Shiggy show no remorse. Asad backstory is not free card for a character to do whatever.

Also for the togaocha out there....in hori’s canon THIS IS HORSE SHIT. Look ship what you want, I BET YOU CAN BE BETTER THAN HORI HERE.

But Toga trying to kill Ochako, mentioned how she used her quirk to kill and then is surprised that Ochako is grossed out by her....IS NOT TRACING A ANTAGONIST RELATIONSHIP

That is Hori being stupid.

I make this post in the hopes some people watch, read and stay mad. It's 2022 and if you still write any Izu shipping fic- regardless with who- where bk is important for Zuzu or the shipping.

You are shipping wrong! And I say this 100% right and certain of this.

Not saying WHO yoi should ship, but when you ship someone- any ship of any fandom- the general consensus is for 2 characters to be together and happy.

And I know some may say "I ship two villains. They do fucked up shit" ok. Then they are fucked up but in love.

And now you wonder "what's matter? If we ship character A abusing gaslight character B, its not as if we are condoning such acts"

TRUE! I can't stress this enough. Liking dark content is not a sin or illegal, but it's sus how the MHA fandom takes Izuku Midoriya and puts him in awful and abusive situations in the name of "love"

A certian server in the discord seems to make Izu the eternal victim, the one who needs to sacrifice everything to be with his lover...who wont sacrifice anything.

And think back how the number of abusive relationships show in the media are awful...See, any "romance" mainstreaming.

And I mention this bc...why is so hard to make healthy relationships?

I ship shigadeku...and the ship can be healthy even if Zuzu falls to the dark side.

You can ship Izuocha and not make Ochako laugh when BK mistreat Izu.

You can ship Izux anyone. And not make him "cant function without my love interest"

You can make healthy and interesting. Also, the whole myth "fucked up relationships are more interesting to read" is not true.

I wouldn't read any Joker X Harley comic...

But I would love to read a Poison Ivy x Harly comic.

You know, thanks to a discussion with @professionalranter31 I realize something....Shiggy may be the only person, in canon, who really react positively (more or less) to Izu being quirkless.

Like Inko criies her heart out and apologise to him (never will like that nor the scene)

AM dont talk about his past. Yes, he said Izu cant be a hero but it wasnt bc of he is evil...it was to soare him (but I do think he was wrong as not every hero faces a villain like AFO. Also, if AFO didn't exist or was dead would AM agree Izu can be a hero?)

And....

BK, please. You guys know what he thinks. His "iconic" line of suicide baiting tells you everything.

"Ah he is quirkless? Ok whatever" and he is the villain. He couls have said smth equally or worse than what BK said. Could have said smth qorse to Izu's face "quirkless good is a dead one" and yet... he never says this.

The villain is more chill about it than....everyone else.

And the love interest, Ochako, knows shit about Izu...Like wow.

I never did a rant about a ship before bc I always thought someone else could do a better job defending it but, considering how this fandom is...maybe I should give my 2 cents for shigadeku

Note: please. I’m note here to cause any ship war. You ship what you want. If you dont like shigadeku then that’s fine.

That’s out of the way, lets talk about this ship. Now, Hori is a bad writer but even in his bad canon...shigadeku does have interesting and “strong” foundations.

I put “” here bc any ship headed by Hori will be bad written. I know this.

Both are different sides of the same coin. Both are outcasts, both have quirks that caused them pain.

And both are alone.

Now, what we know about shiggy is that he is being manipulated by AFO since a young age.

* I want to mention here how...in the hands of a better writer, the name deku could mean smth omen and AFO could call shiggy deku either in front of him or to his back to add more paralels and development for the 2 like, Izu stood up and says/make bk stop calling him deku is great but imagine him defending shiggy?*

oK think with me. In any sci fi/fantasy movie when a character is being mind controlled or groomed...what would stop him to finished the task is seeing the hero/loved one bc would be the begin for the character to.set free.

“I was supposed to kill this person but I dont want ....for now” and develop from there.

Now, when we meet Shiggy is into the hate AFO spill. He has 0 reasons for wanting AM dead.

Great answer and idea for a fic. But in canon he never gives a real answer. “I hate AM” is his get go....no further explanation.

Not sure if my point is clear. All I’m saying is that Shigadeku has such romantic potential and you dont need to turn Izu into “soft cinnamon roll” or change Shiggy into “playboy” to make it work.

3 or 4 years isnt a big deal. I mean, Shiggy was a 17 years old when the story begins and that didnt stop anyone to ship shiggy witb dabi or eraserhead who are older than him.

You know, I think we all own an apology to Kishomoto. Why? His ending wasn't bad written...it fits perfectly with the narrative presented.

Naruto was a story about a fascist and imperalist goverment who will gladly and gleefully stomp overr your body unless you have some utility for them.

The will of fire is not a cutesy thing. It's a propaganda...and it was never challanged.

Sending kids to war.

Breaking yourself for your nation.

Naruto, the mc, never wanted to change anything...he wants the prestige. He wants to be hokage so he can get attention.

Sakura and Naruto both are toxic in regards Sasuke. The victim of genocide - who is paint as a bad person for not wanting to go back to konoha- is in the wrong and needs to be taught a lesson.

Sasuke is not allowed to disagree with a goverment who said ok to genocide of his clan.

Sakura is so yandere for Sasuke...and that checks. You can say is sexism but not is out of character. She dump her friend- mind you in this case Sakura was 10 years old- bc she feared her friend could get the attention of Sasuke.

Naruto was never one to change anything bc all he wanted was to be at the top. Not change anything.

Naruto wasn't a tale of hope. But of dispair.

AC-130J aircraft attacks militants in Iraq after first ballistic missile attack against U.S. positions

U.S. forces have suffered the first attack from a ballistic missile, in a series of 66 attacks in Iraq and Syria since October 17.

In response to a ballistic missile attack on November 21 at the Al-Asad air base in Iraq by an Iranian-backed militant group, a U.S. military AC-130J Ghostrider retaliated quickly, targeting militia vehicles and personnel involved in the attack.

The attack, which caused non-serious injuries to U.S. and coalition forces and minor damage to the infrastructure, triggered the unplanned self-defense attack, the Pentagon's deputy press secretary said.

The Pentagon's deputy press secretary, Sabrina Singh, reported that the AC-130J attack aircraft was in the air during the ballistic missile attack, allowing a quick response. Singh emphasized the effectiveness of the retaliatory attack, resulting in deaths among the hostile forces.

Singh revealed that this incident marked the first use of a ballistic missile in the continuous series of 66 attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria since October 17. Although three previous attacks were pre-planned and targeted specific facilities linked to militias affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, this recent response was improvised.

Open source trackers began to report seeing a Ghostrider flying over western Baghdad on the night of the attack. The fact that I was doing this with the transponder on was very peculiar.

Addressing the ongoing threat, Singh said: "These groups target our forces in both Iraq and Syria. We feel at this moment that we have taken the appropriate measures to decimate some of your facilities and some of your weapons. We always reserve the right to respond at a time and place of our choice."

Subsequently, the U.S. Central Command released a note in the "X": "On November 21, an AC-130 gunship faced individuals responsible for launching a missile attack against U.S. and Coalition personnel at Al Assad Air Base in Iraq. The hunt maintained the visual confirmation of individuals from the moment of launch to the moment of engagement. This attack resulted in several enemy casualties."

The USAF states that the Ghostrider has been modified with the 'Precision Attack Package', which includes a mission management console, robust set of communications, two electro-optical/infrared sensors, advanced fire control equipment, precision-guided ammunition delivery capability, as well as 30 mm and 105 mm cannons.

His main missions are close air support, air interdiction and armed reconnaissance.

The AC-130J also provides ground forces with a direct fire platform that is persistent, suitable for urban operations and provides precision and low-yield ammunition against ground targets.
