I’m obsessed with kitchen gardens...I love to plant them and harvest them and simply watch them grow. I love to help others create them as well.. it gives me so much pleasure to watch garden dreams come to life. In my world, all is well as long as the chard is growing and the tomatoes are ripening. Not much gives me as much pleasure as creating a dinner I’ve grown myself. I’m on a personal quest to help everyone I know turn any little patch of grass into a self sustaining food garden, because who needs a lawn anyhow! ? This little book from England showed up on my front porch this morning and is a basic history of walled gardens. I think that we have so much to learn from the practices of the past. Without a doubt the best and easiest marinara sauce I’ve ever made...sautéed onions and carrots for sweetness instead of sugar, garlic, San Marzano tomatoes from our garden, anchovy paste, red wine and olive oil pressure cooked in the #instapot and the blended in the vitamix . Put it into a soup pot and add salt , seasonings and several tablespoons of butter and simmer it all for about an hour. The flavor is fresh and magical... It was a wonderful Saturday night with our kids sitting by the fire pit and sipping on sweet woodruff laced May wine. I make it the same way that my father did with lemon balm, sliced strawberries , raw honey, Riesling and sweet woodruff and Sauternes . You simply slice the strawberries, add the other ingredients and let it all steep together for an hour or two. It was a simple and wonderful evening, nice and breezy and Watching my son pick the Riesling soaked strawberries out of the pitcher brought back so many sweet memories. Reading this just made my day. 🌿 I’ve done this for years... I can’t bear to throw out the seeds. “When you eat fruit, don't throw seeds, dry them, put them in a bag and leave them in the car. When you're on the road, throw them out the window in areas where there's no trees. Nature will take care of rest. In Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia, they've been practicing it for years and now they have fruit trees everywhere. I don’t often get to cook my sister her birthday dinner. She asked for her favorite, a meal that our mother used to make for her…stuffed peppers with chicken and rice and mashed potatoes. The peppers are fun to make and fairly healthy but the potatoes… oh my God. One bag of potatoes, 1 pint of sour cream, 2 sticks of butter and salt. They are delicious and not at all heart healthy but once or twice a year? Why not. That’s what birthdays are for right? Recreating memories and making new magic. I cannot begin to tell you just how worth the wait this candle was. I ordered this wonderful Christmas Tree candle from @paigescandleco early in December and it was caught up in the USPS mess. Paige was in touch with me the entire time offering to send replacements, but I was happy to wait for them. Paiges candles are simply beautiful with a long burn time and gorgeous fragrances. Christmas Tree has a top note of Pine, with a middle note of Mistletoe and and a base of Balsam, so it’s soft and fragrant , just like the freshly cut boughs of a winter wreath.
