Throwback Fic Week: tell my father (this is my life)

Next up: tell my father (this is my life).

Is it cheating if I post the combined fic for an entire series? Maybe. But this is my account and I do what I want.

Welcome to my Season 1, Episode 9 Umbrella Academy AU in which Ben convinced Klaus to fight to let Vanya out of the cell in the basement. The AU is entirely focused on exploring these kids’ trauma and their healing processes, while also casually exploring their queer indentities. Each fic/chapter was focused on a different character, exploring their backstories and also their lives living together, sorting through old hurts while learning how to heal together. Also, almost every character is queer, and it was fun to explore not just Vanya and Klaus being bisexual, but Diego’s transgender identity, Five and Alison’s asexual identity, and Luther’s aromanticism through the lens of their trauma and how that intersects with both their experiences growing up under Hargreeves and them trying to make an identity for themselves. I also took the first season’s establishment of Klaus’ powers and brought back Patch, Ben, and Dave because I could. Also, it somehow developed a tiny plot in which I sort of predicted that Season 2 would open up the possibility of an eighth sibling- though, in my case, it was an evil sibling who happens to be Jack the Ripper and who joined the Agency.

Excerpt:

"Five's so small," Allison says quietly, "He's so old, but he's so small," and Diego nods. He understands. Dear god, he understands.

"He's our brother," Diego says, "And he's gone through as much shit as we have, and then some."

Allison nods. "And we weren't there for most of it."

Diego thinks about all the shit that they've all gone through that none of them supported each other through. Vanya being excluded and verbally abused, Klaus' drug addiction, Allison's divorce, Luther's years on the moon, Diego's time on the force and his transition process, Ben's death. Five's gone through a lot more shit, but they've all been alone and driven apart in their own ways. "I think most of us have gone through some shit that the others weren't there for. But now- now, we can help him heal."

Allison fixes him with a steady gaze, and Diego doesn't flinch.

She looks so old and yet so young at the same time. The scar on her neck is still rather dark and there are crows' feet around the edges of her eyes that weren't there the last time he saw her before Dad's funeral, six years ago at Ben's funeral. She's so mature, now, in a way she never was before. He wonders if it has to do with Claire or has to do with the fact that she's stopped using her powers, or if it's something of a mix of the two.

Diego wonders what she sees when she looks at him, if she sees the little boy straining to make the world see him for who he really was, bullying and scraping and pleading to get his way, or if she sees a half-broken man who's spent his whole adulthood clinging to the lies of superheroes he was told as a child.

"The three of us should really go grab dinner sometime soon," she eventually says, and Diego grins.

The asexual Five Hargreeves narrative is an incredibly damaging narrative in the LGBTQ+ community and I need to talk about it because I don't see anyone else doing so.

Before I start, I'm asexual myself. And this is just my views. I don't mean to talk over other ace identifying people's opinions or headcanons. This is just my experience with the character.

If a fellow acespec identifying person headcanons Five to be asexual then I have no issue with that AT ALL, but other members of the LGBTQA+ do not get to just label him as ace simply because he's "in a relationship with a mannequin". That is such a damaging narrative that I have seen being spread around for far too long.

In my opinion, Five never had any opportunity to develop or discover his sexual preferences because he was thrown into the apocalypse alone at a young age. He was a child when he was left completely alone without any other human being.

The amount of times I have seen "Five is asexual, that's why he's with Delores," on social media is simply gross. Asexuality does not mean a person is attracted to inanimate objects. Five's attraction to Delores came solely from his trauma of being thrown into a difficult situation alone at the age of thirteen.

Asexuality should not just be pinned onto a character because they aren't in a relationship with another human being. Five is shown to canonically roll his eyes whenever anyone discusses relationships or sex, and that is a very acespec experience. If that's the reason why you headcanon Five to be asexual then great.

Aphobes use the narrative "you can't know if you're ace if you haven't had sex" or "you can't know if you're aro if you haven't been in a relationship" to erase and belittle acespec experiences for decades now. That's not at all what I am saying.

I just think that the narrative that Five has to be asexual because he likes a mannequin (which is never confirmed to be sexual, nor romantic) is incredibly damaging. And the idea that he "must be asexual because he shows no interest in sex" is not necessarily an accurate representation because he never had that chance to develop his relationship (or lack of) with attraction in the way an adolescent should.

I, personally, view Five to be unlabeled. I don't think he'd have the slightest interest in any of that. I don't think he quite understands sexuality enough to give himself a label.

everyone has the right to whatever head canons they want and whatever but the five hargreeves aroace canon REALLY rubs me the wrong way bcuz a. he literally experiences romantic and sexual attraction to dolores in canon b. it feels VERY much like a tone deaf stereotype of “oh, the cold, emotionless character is aroace” (even tho five is far from emotionless, he just bottles up his emotions and usually thinks with logic) and c. it infantilizes him. oh, he’s in a child’s body, of course he’s aroace, right? five is a FIFTY EIGHT YEAR OLD MAN and his BIGGEST insecurity is looking like his 13 yr old self. it doesn’t bother me as much when people that are ACTUALLY on the aroace spectrum say this shit but when ur not tbh it just gives me the ick. probably gonna get hella hate for this but someone had to say it
