Random thought while watching someone react to Encanto. I've seen a good number of queer headcanons for Isabela and Camilo as closeted lesbian and genderfluid, respectively, but I just had the thought of "Mirabel feels like she's lacking something everyone else has" which is also what a lot of aro and/or ace people feel like in the current heteronormative society.

The receiving of a Gift is even framed as a minor "coming of age" like puberty, which is when feelings start to come in for most people. But Mirabel didn't get the Gift. She didn't get what most of the people around her did.

Look, I know the go-to historical comparison with Rhaenyra is empress Mathilda, the antiqueen of England, and I'll admit, as far as historical parallels to the ASOIAF characters go, it's a good one - plus, I think it's the one that GRRM most likely had in mind.

However

Whether intentionally or (more likely) unintentionally, he also wrote her to be very similar to another female monarch I can think of.

(Of course it's a Winterhalter portrait, what did you expect? Minette is both gay and unsubtle. She's naturally drawn to the famous Painter Of Women As Pretty.)

Meet Isabella II. of Spain. Yes, there was a second one.

Parallels with Rhaenyra:

Came from an infamously incestuous family (I know Habsburgs are the go-to examples of royal inbreeding, but unlike Bourbons, they at least stopped marrying their nieces and double cousins by the 19th century, presumably learning from Ferdinand the Benevolent - which is ironic, because Ferdinand the Benevolent was actually one of the better 19th century Habsburg men, but I digress)

Was named heir by her father, but her succession was contested by a male relative (uncle instead of a brother but you get the idea)...

...which led to a civil war (though unlike Rhaenyra, she was a child when her father died, so a succession of regents, including her mother, ruled in her stead, and she actually managed to come out on top and rule for a few decades)

Was forced to marry a cousin, who, it was rumored, was unable/unwilling to consummate the marriage, or at least sleep with his wife often enough to sire an heir (historians aren't sure what was up with Isabela's cousin-husband, like he was said to be an effette nerd and maybe gay/asexual, though the fact that Isabela actually kinda despised him also couldn't have helped any)...

...which lead to rumors that her children are illegitimate (though here she kinda makes Rhaenyra look like a chump - while Rhaenyra was said to have had like two lovers in her life, three if you count her premarital canoodling with Daemon, Isabela most likely had more, though we can't be sure how many)

Her record as a queen is mixed at best (which is why she ended up overthrown by a revolution after 35 years on the throne)

Was hot as a young woman, but gained a lot of weight in her later years

I don't have a point here, I just wanted to inform the Hot D tumblr of this interesting little tidbit.

NICKNAME: Tal from most friends. Tally from family and Isabela. Canary from Varric (he has yellow hair, often dresses in fluff, sings to himself, and is the first one sent into danger.)

TAROT/ZODIAC: Judgement / Capricorn

HEIGHT: 5'5" / 165 cm

ORIENTATION: biromantic asexual

NATIONALITY/ETHNICITY: fantasy Irish Fereldan

FAVORITE FRUIT: Peaches. He especially likes them because they're fuzzy, but he won't eat the fuzz.

FAVORITE SEASON: Winter. He loves the cold and snow. It's also when his favorite holidays (Satinalia and Winterfest) and birthday (Wintermarch aka January 11) fall. He always enjoys a good autumn or summer festival, however.

FAVORITE FLOWER: Pink roses. Particularly the ones that grow in the Kirkwall Chantry garden.

FAVORITE SCENT: Big fan of anything floral and woody.

COFFEE, TEA, OR HOT CHOCOLATE: Tea. There's always a kettle ready whenever friends are over.

AVERAGE HOURS OF SLEEP: He tends to stay up late and wake up early. Not because he enjoys it, though he doesn't necessarily dislike it, mostly out of habit. Ever since Malcolm's passing, he's grown used to the routine of making breakfast for the family and working into the night.

DOGS OR CATS: Dogs. Most of all Miss Honey, the very most bestest and goodest and sweetest mabari of all.

DREAM TRIP: He's happy where he is, but he wouldn't be against seeing all his friends homelands. While hiding at sea, he gets to see a bit of Rivain with Isabela. After that, when Sebastian decides to retake the throne, he moves with him to Starkhaven.

NUMBER OF BLANKETS: As many as it takes! He likes to be snuggled and cozy. He also needs to be squeezing something to fall asleep. Luckily, Sebastian enjoys being squeezed. Honey is relieved she's no longer the one getting squeezed.

RANDOM FACT: He has a soft spot for all animals. Even wild animals. Can barely contain himself around creatures that he should not pet. It takes a lot of self-control.

everyone at coates bullies diana w diana by one direction but can only get away w it bc caine does it too (i’m not sure when that song came out but pretend it works okay. i like this.)

drakes whip is gross as fuck. like veined and slimy and shit like a genuine tentacle it’s the worst. thank you user inkskxtch for reminding me of this fact

astrid has scottish heritage on her mothers side. her grandfather is genuinely from scotland so she has a slight accent

diana is named after princess diana and took it extremely personal and demands to be treated as such

caine fell first but diana fell harder

quinn has consistent issues w his dad. in the first book he says he had a fight w his dad the night before the fayz which leads me to believe that happened a lot

because of this i think he spent a lot of time at sam’s house and saw connie as a surrogate parent figure. which is adorable

after he got over being a douchebag to edilio, quinn actually had a crush on him and never told a single soul, not even sam.

astrid is asexual, quinn, diana, orc and lana are bi, howard is gay and caine is some kind of fruit. there’s no way to convince me he doesn’t like men. you cannot do it.

i also like hcing drake as pan bc 1) i don’t like the stereotype that the bubbly happy character is always pan and like to combat it w making the most vicious angry violent characters i can find pan and 2) he has way too much chemistry w every man he’s ever been in a room w to be straight
