I'm finally able to provide the summary of results I've gotten for my master's thesis. I hope people will find them interesting and helpful. The thesis itself was written in Croatian and the results translated so I apologize if something is expressed awkwardly. my gender is someone gave me a bowl of raisin bran and my brother a bowl of cheerios, and I like raisin bran just fine, but if they'd asked what I wanted I might have picked cheerios? But I'm already a couple bites into the raisin bran and it seems like an awful fuss to switch to cheerios now, and while I've heard that some people prefer lucky charms or cinnamon toast crunch, and those do seem super fun...I'm not really willing to put in the effort of explaining my breakfast choices to people who think that everyone should just be eating raisin bran or cheerios and nothing else, especially when I don't really care if I'm eating raisin bran or cinnamon toast crunch or lucky charms or cheerios, though I do think everyone should eat whatever cereal they want without being bothered about it.

Asexual and Aromantic Survey

I am currently writing a book about the experiences of those on the asexual and aromantic spectrums! As part of my research, I’m trying to compile as many personal stories as I can to include in the work - to which end, I’ve created a survey.

I’m hoping to put together a personal story of my respondents, exploring the challenges we face, the way our orientations intersect with other aspects of our identity such as disability and race, how we navigate relationships, and so on. How long the survey takes will depend on how much detail you want to go into; you could probably breeze through in a few minutes, though longer and more detailed answers will be a huge help to me.

If you are in any way ace or aro (including grey-ace/aro, demi, etc), it would mean the world to me if you filled in the survey; and if you’re not, please do spread it around! The survey will not collect your details (other than what you choose to share, of course).

I love Alastor but as an ace, questioning aro-flux, I fucking hate tumblr for the fanfics. It’s smut galore by people who don’t understand was asexuality is and don’t take the time to ask someone who is or use google which is free. Literally if ANYONE needs to write an Alastor fanfic even smut I’m open to give people advice on how this shit works. I’m tired of people erasing my only rep.

I’m not saying you can’t write smut or romance for Alastor, but if you are please learn how that works for someone with that orientation. It’s like y’all making a gay man have sex with a woman and coming up with some wack ass excuse for why he did it.

I will literally open DMs and my askbox for people to ask me about it or hell just make a huge post. Obviously I don’t speak for all asexuals and aromantics. But I can speak for a majority of us when we say stop erasing the only representation we get for your fanfics and acting like it’s still apart of the orientation. Your excuses are a lot more hurtful than you think.

Extra clarrification on some things under the cut :)

In this study we use the words "(gender) conforming" to mean anyone thats not part of the LGBTQ+ community and "(gender)non-conforming" for anyone that is. This was suggested to help us code the results better, but we now know that this may have overcomplicated things.

The first part of the study involves an IAT, for some people they will be put into the "positive, conforming" conditioin first and others will be the "positive, nonconforming" first. It may seem scewed, and some people have bought up that it can seem bias, but that is just how this type of test works- it has been used and tested in many other studies and has not shown internal bias.

These are the main two points people have bought up, feel free to ask any other questions about this research though I will be happy to try and answer as much as I can :)

Research request on Asexual Identity Development

The purpose of this study is to explore asexual individuals’ attitudes, beliefs and experiences surrounding their asexuality. Should you choose to participate, you will complete a questionnaire in which you be asked to respond to a series of questions or statements about aspects of your asexual identity. This is expected to take you approximately 10 to 12 minutes to complete.

God how I wish there'd been articles like this years ago when people were tripping over themselves to deny any and all struggles asexual people face. The amount of times people demanded "proof" when we talked about our experiences. Well, there's certainly more research being published nowadays, if that counts as "proof". I hope they read it.

Today “asexuality is widely accepted as a sexual orientation in the literature,” Hille says, but cultural awareness remains in its infancy, especially compared with other orientations under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. Saying you don't experience sexual attraction is still like saying you don't eat, Hille explains, and “if you don't eat, there's something wrong with you, and you're hurting yourself.” Asexual people sometimes get this message not just from family and acquaintances but from their health-care providers. Shelby Wren, a health equity researcher at the University of Minnesota, published a study in 2020 in which 30 to 50 percent of respondents who had disclosed their asexuality in a medical setting said a therapist or doctor had attributed their asexuality to a health condition. The proposed diagnoses included anxiety, depression and, in one case, a personality disorder. “You don't know what's going to happen when you disclose your sexual orientation,” Wren says. “And for a lot of people, that stops them from talking about things that could be relevant to their health care.”

Refraining from disclosing one's asexuality to a mental health provider is often a “very rational decision,” Chasin says. “It's always much worse to be actively rejected and misunderstood.” For instance, asexual people are sometimes subjected to conversion therapy, a practice aimed at changing someone's sexuality or gender identity. It is banned for minors in 22 U.S. states because of its well-documented and extensive harms, including increased rates of suicide. A 2018 U.K. government survey of LGBTQIA+ people found that asexual respondents were the most likely to be offered conversion therapy and as likely as gay and lesbian people to receive it. A recent survey by the Trevor Project found that 4 percent of asexual youths in the U.S. were subjected to conversion therapy, on par with bisexual respondents. On the legislative level, bans on conversion therapy should explicitly reference asexuality, Benoit says. So, too, should professional associations of health-care practitioners, says Samantha Guz, a social work researcher at the University of Chicago. “Asexual people are made to be so invisible in our society that I don't think just having a broad call against conversion therapy is specific enough,” Guz says.

Even well-meaning doctors might unwittingly harm their patients. To a clinician, a patient who is worried that they should feel more sexual desire—and who does not know they are simply asexual—might initially look similar to patients who want sexual intimacy and could benefit from treatments aimed at increasing or restoring desire. Treatments for certain types of sexual dysfunction do help some people whose level of sexual desire leaves them distressed and unsatisfied, Brotto says. For some people, though, this distress may be coming not from an intrinsic desire to want sex but from external pressures such as partners or society as a whole. “I have worked with folks where it's taken us many, many months for the person to really understand how well asexuality fits with their identity,” as opposed to having an issue that is rooted in a health problem or a situational condition, Brotto says. Most doctors, though, don't know that such a distinction exists or is necessary, she adds.
