A pained sob escaped Ash’s lips. “Help,” he sobbed. “Help me. Please-”
Ash’s own cries woke him. He was drenched in a cold sweat and gasped, clutching at his chest, his pulse racing wildly. He forced himself to take deep breaths, to calm his frantic heart.
He suddenly remembered he wasn’t alone and looked up fearfully. But the figure in the other bed was motionless, still asleep.
Ash slipped out of bed quietly and moved to the window where he could watch the lights of the city shining beneath him.
Eiji shut his eyes against the tears. He felt helpless every night as he listened to Ash’s cries. Helpless as Ash - who was fearless in the face of anything - sobbed and struggled against the nightmares that tormented his dreams.
He couldn’t do nothing. Anything was better than listening to those heartbreaking cries every night.
Ash turned, startled, as Eiji’s hand rested on his arm.
“Are you okay?” Eiji asked softly.
Ash smirked, no trace of fear or nightmare on his face. “You still have jet lag? Why are you awake so early?”
“I heard you… crying,” Eiji said quietly.
Ash scowled. “Get your ears checked. You heard wrong.”
“If you want to talk about it…”
Ash hit his hand away. “I’m fine.”
“I hear you at night-”
Ash turned on him with a growl. “If you mention it to anyone-”
Eiji blinked at him, startled. “I wouldn’t do that.”
Ash glared and turned away angrily, staring back out the window. Eiji withdrew his hand uncertainly.
Maybe this was a mistake… He shouldn’t have said anything.
Eiji turned and began to walk away.
“Do you ever have nightmares?” Ash said quietly.
Eiji stopped and turned around. Ash was still staring outside at the city lights below.
“Sometimes,” Eiji said.
Ash looked at him and Eiji could have sworn he saw tears in his eyes.
“I have nightmares every night,” Ash said. “No matter what I do. Alcohol, drugs-” Eiji winced. “Nothing gets rid of them.”
Eiji walked back over to him. He hesitated and then put a hand on Ash’s arm gently. Ash looked at him and there was a sad smile in his eyes.
“I’m fine,” Ash said. “You just never really get used to them, do you?”
“A lot of kids have nightmares,” Eiji said.
Ash laughed darkly, “I’m not a kid.”
“You are… in some ways.” Eiji looked at him. “You may be a gang leader and a vicious murderer, but you still don’t know that the best cure for bad dreams is a nightlight. And someone to watch over you.”
Ash looked up at him and there was no mistaking the tears in his eyes this time. Ash laughed, embarrassed, and rubbed an arm across his eyes.
“Come on,” Eiji said. He took Ash by the hand and led him over to the bed.
Eiji flipped on one of the lamps and slipped under the covers beside Ash.
“What are you doing?” Ash asked, flushing red.
Eiji smiled softly, “Watching over you.”
He snuggled up against Ash and together they watched the twinkling lights of the city. Eiji laid his head against Ash’s chest and listened as his heartbeat returned to normal and his breath began to slow.
“I will murder you if you tell anyone,” Ash mumbled.
Eiji smiled and pulled him close. “I know.”
