So BBS left these untranslated this time. It's really weird to me that they're so inconsistent with this from set to set. There really don't seem to be any clever wordplay with these. I wonder if they were kind of halfbaked as far as concept goes and just pushed out the door to meet a seasonal banner quota.
Tumblr media
Konjiki Yaya'jarashi[金色稚戯らし]: "Golden Baby Play/Frolic"
I do like the animation for this. Jizo gumming at his halo like a baby's terthing ring is very funny to me. Weird that they took away his caterpillar body and replaced it with just the two random weird buggy legs though. I guess his sorta sad wet crinkled looking wings are supposed to mean he just emerged from a chrysalis? But that transformation into an "adult" form feels at odds with the baby teething thing.
Tumblr media
Kodoku-no-Tanga[狐毒の綻牙]: "Fox Venom's Unraveled Fang"
This one did have a weird kanji choice. tan[綻] can mean a variety of things like "to burst open, be rent, ripped, unravel/to split (at the seam), begin to open, smile(?)" It's definitely tempting to want there to be some double meaning with "Smiling Fang(s)" but I don't know that that actually reads for this practically. Otherwise it seems like it's supposed to be describing the dissolving dust particle effect his bankai has as "Unraveled (at the seams) Fang," and the "fox poison" is of course fairly self evident.
Again, weirdly overly literal names here, unless there are homonyms in here that just totally fly over my head.

Mayuri/Reader: Non-Specific SFW Headcanons
I made a post with request information :) You can check it out in the masterpost or down below
Tumblr media
art by me
>Masterpost | >Request info
Kurotsuchi wouldn't resent the fact that he harbors any romantic feelings towards you even though depending on the person it can either surprise or confuse him that something like this had even occurred. In his mind, only a fool would deny and hate something that happens naturally because trying to reject a mental and physical process is just plain weakness. And he tends to be a very straightforward man, too. However, he deems these kinds of feelings to be very... well, inconvenient with his position and status to put it simply. It would take up too much time and resources to try to meet the standards of how one usually reciprocates feelings (because of course he has to or else you would probably nag him about it) and would just literally sabotage his image in the eyes of other Shinigami which is a huge fucking deal for him. So to avoid any misunderstandings or unnecessary heartbreaks if he knows you like him Mayuri would choose to never acknowledge anything that is happening. Which is kinda... contradictory to his own opinion on the matter so he fails miserably to hide his sympathies sometimes lmao. I'm sure he can be biased toward people he likes or people who like him whether he intends to be or not
It's especially bad if you make positive, or even better enthusiastic, comments on his appearance. In this moment his ego just overshadows any last traces of the rational approach he had to the way he deals with his love for you and gives way to all kinds of other things. If he's feeling generous enough he can even let you watch him put on his makeup or plan his next outfit accessory. You said you like his hands? Why thank you! Now you can watch him show them off more frequently by gesturing or making more physical contact while touching your shoulder for a brief moment for example. You showed interest in something he made just for himself? You'll find it on your desk later whether it's food, some accessory or a small device just to make some mundane task easier and/or more fun. Actually, I also think after some time he'd even make attempts to make some adjustments to the way you dress or do your hair to match his own splendor
Would probably end up spending an embarrassing amount of time meticulously collecting info on you and unconsciously remembering everyday facts he never even thought of noting before down to... idk... the way you make your coffee or your menstrual cycle if you have one. He doesn't shun letting you know he knows
Unexpected late-night visits to his lab while he's plugging away at the last of the reports for the day are pretty much unwelcome. It's the time he spends alone and uses to muse about things however tiring it may be at such an hour. However, in this case, he realizes that having you sit next to him while he's working isn't half bad. He'd let you ask questions from time to time if you're curious and would even infodump you with various project ideas he has in mind. Being in a very disheveled state with practically no makeup on while casually sharing his thoughts is pretty intimate to him actually
Kurotsuchi should be thankful Ashisogi Jizo never takes the form shown in the Zanpakuto rebellion arc because the thing would be the biggest snitch ever. Just flying full speed into you to cuddle no matter whether under Muramasa's influence or not. He would absolutely bawl his eyes out if he somehow didn't see you nearby when releasing poison in his Konjiki form and throw a fit while doing so for everyone to see, too. Jizo's pea brain can't or doesn't want to grasp the fact that he's making a huge fool out of his own Shinigami and it's not like Mayuri can just make him explode like he did in the anime because Jizo is practically glued to you which undoubtedly will make it hurt and makes him contemplate this decision, further proving that they both share roughly the same feelings towards you. However, he does understand that his owner is trying to separate you two so Ashisogi Jizo won't hesitate to try and paralyze even him with the extruding blades if Kurotsuchi tries to get him off you. All of Mayuri's sympathy would just manifest in the most annoying way when his zanpakuto's spirit form is present, turning the yellow creature into a clingy possessive baby who constantly seeks attention by squealing non-stop, as if talking, or giving small gifts. In this scenario, Jizo would return to his sword form only if Mayuri accepted his fate of "co-parenting" for some time a.k.a. spending time together while other captains and lieutenants are busting their asses fighting their own zanpakuto

Headcanons: More Zanpakuto Inconveniences
Part I can be found here. More unexpected Zanpakuto drawbacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Genryusai Yamamoto: Ryujin Jakka
Gets performance anxiety sometimes and produces a teeny flame akin to a cigarette lighter
If it feels neglected or like Yamamoto has been too harsh with it, it heats itself up to a point where he can’t hold his zanpakuto without burning himself
Enjoys campfire s’mores and forces Yamamoto to make them for it, causing him to send Sasakibe into town to sneak in Graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. It can’t eat it, but enjoys the feeling of the chocolate and marshmallows melting over its flames, and Yamamoto has to distribute them to other squad members, insisting he was just being generous.
Tumblr media
Shunsui Kyoraku: Katen Kyokotsu (KK)
Turns everything into a game. People around it find themselves unwittingly participating in games like:
Duck Duck Goose : random shinigami will suddenly against their will sit in a circle while the menacing spirit of KK hovers over  them before deeming one person goose. The confused shinigami is now chasing KK with no way of winning until KK gets bored and releases them from the game
Simon Says : KK gives the most ridiculous commands such as jumping on 1 leg in midair while singing nursery rhymes, or to have droves of Shinigami simply chase Shunsui around the Seireitei.
Tag : the most chaotic and devastating one. Seriously, this should be a real battle maneuver. All the shinigami run after each other without the faintest clue who they need to catch
After the Simon Says incident, Shunsui was forced to find a way to control KK. This is why he drinks so much sake, it makes KK drowsy and in turn, the other shinigami are free from its antics
Tumblr media
Mayuri Kurotsuchi : Ashisogi Jizo
Always smells like rotten eggs for some reason
Because of it’s caterpillar like appearance, it needs to eat and moult frequently. Mayuri gives it lots of leafy vegetables laced with different poisons to keep its ability up but then it goes into the pupa stage and he can’t use it until it breaks out.
Cries like a baby until Mayuri picks it up and cuddles it, after which it drapes itself around his neck like a weird slimy boa. He has to carry it everywhere now, much to his ire and the amusement of his squad.

Isn't it interesting that Mayuri's zanpakuto takes the form of an infant and Zaraki's zanpakuto is confirmed to have been taking the form of Yachiru, a child, for much of the series?
And during the rebellion arc it's Yachiru that chases around and tries to play with Ashisogi Jizo before both captains turn up and antagonise one another.
If a zanpakuto is the reflection of their soul and depicts what might be a more hidden side to their personality, then that implies an immaturity of soul, a childishness at their core.
Yachiru has no sense of fear or caution, she's just running around causing trouble because it's fun. Ashisogi Jizo lashes out in perceived self-defence every few minutes and annoys people because it's fun.
On the surface what we see between the two captains is constant antagonism and murderous intent, but on a more subconscious level we're basically just watching two kids say "Can I play with you?" or if we go verbatim by the Jizo/Yachiru interaction, then it's Zaraki saying "I want to play" and Mayuri replying "No, go away."

The child’s blank eyes stare awkwardly up at Hitsugaya as they grabbed onto the sleeve of his Shinigami uniform, tugging on it lightly to get the man’s attention. Letting out a quiet chirping noise as he did so.
Tumblr media
T he mindful tug, partially lightweight yet conspicuously discernible as a sole piece of a fledging feather that had fallen from its assembly of abundance, at his loose sleeve, unanticipated for he was in mid-thought, rouses his consciousness back onto their present reality. " ... ? " Eyne descends to the ensuing chirp that exuded from a diminutive being, Ashisogi Jizo.- Perplexity located refuge 'pon adolescent illustrative countenance, then, as he internally mulled on what they may plausibly be necessitating from one like himself;he was not fond of children of any miscellany genus." What is it? "

Kisuke Urahara, Senjumaru Shutara, and Mayuri Kurotsuchi are indeed known for their unique and complex abilities in the Bleach.
Kisuke Urahara possesses a Zanpakuto called Benihime. His abilities include creating energy constructs, using Kido spells, and even manipulating time to a limited extent.
Senjumaru Shutara is the head of the Royal Guard's Sewing and Embroidery Corps. Her ability creates and control clothing made from incredibly durable threads. Her Nerimono ability allows her to craft various objects and weapons from these threads.
Mayuri Kurotsuchi specializes in scientific and poison-based techniques. His Zanpakuto, Ashisogi Jizo can release a deadly poison and has a variety of other abilities related to toxins and experimentation.
It's fair to confirm that Kisuke Urhara has direct connection to Senjumaru. The abilities she displayed in the recent episode fairly matched Kisuke's bankai. I also want to add that Mayuri connection to Senjumaru as well but in terms of looks. I'll do more research but I'm going to assume that Senjumaru was Kisuke and Mayuri sensei of some sort which make sense for their rivalry.

Okay I spent NO time on this and have also never drawn a moth in my life so just. It's just a doodle. But I like this idea as a spirit form so much better than that one filler arc... where Ashisogi Jizo is a little baby/butterfly thing. Like I get where they were coming from (they literally just took his Bankai and shrunk it down and gave it a lil blue mohawk lol) but uh. Maybe I just want to give the man a cool fuzzy moth okay? @w1cked-w1tch your moth pictures inspired this btw<3

The small spirit lets out a soft sqeaking noise, he reaches his small arm up to tug on the sixth division captains sleeve.
- Ashisogi Jizo
The Captain of the Sixth Division slightly jolted at the strange spirit appearing out of nowhere to tug on his sleeve. He cleared his throat and remained phlegmatic, attempting to keep his reactions under control as to not seem overly emotional. He looked at the spirit, recognizing the reiatsu from an odd colleague; a fellow captain of his. Kurotsuchi.. His eye twitched in irritation and he sighed softly, continuing to walk with the small spirit at his side. "What is it? What does Kurotsuchi need this time? He realizes he can come to be by himself, and doesn't need to send his inventions to my division, correct?" He mused, somewhat irritated with his antics.

I'm glad people are liking my captains vs espada post! I put a lot of thought into it and it's not even everything I wanted to write lol let's let my autism dissect Mayuri some more, shall we?
Ashisogi Jizo being a baby I think has more to do with Mayuri's obsession with creating life. I have yet to decide if I think it being a Jizo has any real significance or not. Theres a ton of Buddhist symbols where zanpakuto are concerned and thus far its been hard to parse out what's there because it's relevant to the character and what's there because Kubo thought it was neat. I fully plan on looking more into it at some point though, maybe there will be another essay about that in the future.
Ashisogi Jizo, and more specifically Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo, plays HEAVILY into the aposematism aspect of his character design. Mayuri very much wants to broadcast "don't fuck with me, I'm poisonous and I'll fuck you up" which is..... interesting. Why poisonous instead of venomous, and how do we know? Aposematism occurs in both kinds of animals right? Well, think about it. Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo is a giant caterpillar thing, right? There ARE venomous caterpillars, but they're spiky or hairy. Ashisogi Jizo is not. Mayuri does make HIMSELF look this way, but why hasn't he made Ashisogi Jizo spiky or hairy? We know that he can. Both the sealed form AND his shikai have been made to look somewhat spiky. We know he can alter the appearance of a zanpakuto spirit. So why doesn't he do it?
If you don't want to dig too deep into it, you could just say "he just wants to be the poison/venom bug man cuz he's a weirdo" which..... true..... BUT! There are a couple things that don't quite fit here. Mayuri Kurotsuchi is underweight. He's 5'8 and 119 lbs (174 cm and 54kg). Dudes real thin. Look at how big he makes himself look with this clothing.
Tumblr media
Now, this could feed into the aposematic shtick. Lots of animals who use aposematism use displays that make themselves look bigger than they are. Except...... they only do it when they think they're being actively threatened. Who in their right mind would make themselves a threat to Mayuri Fucking Kurotsuchi inside the seireitei? Nobody is threatening his position or his safety. No this is a perceived threat to his more intimate, squishy parts. His emotions.
His attitude feeds into this. Yeah, crazy mad scientist guy, thinks he's the best in the whole wide world. That trope doesn't require the shitty ass attitude though. During the battle with Szayelaporro, when he's looking at Nemu after Szayelaporro uses Gabriel and emerges from her its drawn out. He stares at her for a while, it felt like an eternity the first time I watched it. And he looks...... upset. Sad. It's barely perceptible, you could easily miss it and I thought I was imagining things until we see him staring again later in the fight with a completely blank expression.
Mayuri is softer than he lets on. Softer than he wants ANYONE to see, and he uses his appearance and his venomous attitude to keep people at bay. To keep people from seeing his soft white underbelly. His vulnerability. I'm certain he has a lot of fun with his appearance, it's a cool concept and I can't imagine how much fun it must be playing around with it. But there's a reason nobody but Nemu ever sees him without it. I have a similar experience with makeup and shitty attitude. My appearance in public is a physical representation of the wall I've built. My makeup is a physical mask. My facial expressions are a deterant. My shitty attitude usually takes care of anyone brave enough to still approach me. I love makeup, I love fashion, and I have a lot of fun putting together the version of me other people see.
So, from my perspective, Mayuri's appearance is absolutely a representation of his weirdness and his scientific mind but it's also a representation of his fear. This is why I think Mayuri is poisonous, rather than venomous. All of the offensive posturing is a bluff meant to scare you away. The venom he wants you to believe he has doesn't exist. Poison certainly has built up in his system, like a monarch caterpillar, so if you "eat" him you will feel the effects, but he's nowhere near as dangerous as he'd like you to believe. I think some subconscious part of his brain wants somebody to figure it out and thats why he hasnt modified Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo to look venomous.
Maybe I'm just projecting though who knows🤷‍♀️ what I DO know is that I'd let him do all kinds of weird, nasty things to me. For science of course.

do you know Jujutsu Kaisen? In that series theres a character that summons a shikigami called Makora (thats what he pronounces in the anime) but the subs and dubs changed it to Mahoraga.
Any idea what the hell happened here?
I never did get caught up on JJK, although I always meant to. People have pointed out that it has some fun buddhist theming in it, which of course I'm always interested in. So while I don't know the specifics of how the name is used in the series, I can actually see what the basic problem is here.
The name/term Makora[魔虚羅] was shortened from Makoraga[摩睺羅伽] which is localized from the Chinese móhoúluójiā[摩睺羅伽]which is itself the Chinese localization of the sanskrit Mahoraga[महोरग]; a sort of race of mythical beings in Buddhism, carried over from its roots in Hindu mythology. So it's not like the word has a strict "meaning" outside of being the name of the specific mythological being, which you could definitely leave as Makora, but they seem to have chosen to "translate" the Japanese word back to the Indian one it originally came from.
It's kind of like if they had translated Ashisogi-Jizo as Ashisogi-Kshitigarbha, or Kokujo Tengen Myouou as Kalasutra Tengen Vidyaraja. Definitely a little clunky and weird, and not especially functional in actually conveying meaning, but not necessarily "wrong" in the strictest sense. But for me, since I lack the context, it raises questions as to whether its specific usage in the manga is referring to specifically the Japanese iteration of said religious figures, or actually drawing on the original cultural context with all the tonal and stylistic implications of foreign and ancient almost primordial implications that come with that.

Nowen talkin bout bleach:
Bleach TYBW ep23: Is Mayuri the Soul Society Version of Big Pharma?
Well, after last weeks episode, and the drama that unfolded there, we have the conclusion to the start of that fight. Now I have another confession. I am a diehard squad 11 fan, but, if I had to pick another captain to fawn over, it would probably be Mayuri. I know that doesn’t make me sound good considering half of what Mayuri does, but you gotta admit the man gets results. anyway, great episode with great characterization and extremely fun fights. Plus we get introduced to a wonderful new Sternritter that has been foreshadowed as early as the first invasion but has only been introduced now! Don’t get attached, he’s the worst! And that’s comparing the sadistic zombie maker girl as well as the literal cannibal. Still, this is Mayuri’s episode, so I hope you’re ready for a lethal dose of FUN! (Warning:funmayhaveterribleunintendedsideeffects.pleaseconsultLieutenantAkonofthe12thdivisionbeforepartakinginanyfunprescribedbyCaptainKurosutchi.)
Shinigami Deaths:16
Quincy Deaths:15 (although Robert ain’t looking too good)
Side effects below
Things I liked:
When Hitsugaya goes on the offensive. On one hand it really shows just how powerful a captain and lieutenant can be. Because even though Ikkaku avoided the majority of the blast, he still got a leg frozen. The main reason I say this is because throughout the course of the series, captains and lieutenants have had a shrinking gap between them. To put it in a power levels style of perspective, it would be like a standard soul reaper is a 1, a seated officer is a 5-10, a strong lieutenant is a 20-30 and a captain is a 50-100. That gap got slowly less and less as captains lost fights, or demonstrated less skilled than lieutenants going up against opponents. On the other hand, it also shows how serious soul reapers can be. If they didn’t spend a lot of time, talking about their abilities, or trying to play coy while using their sword and just straight up going for it, a lot of fights might end up finished faster. Still, this sequence is brutal and I think it’s perfect.
Speaking of, I loved when Ikkaku rescued Yumichika. I maintain that these two are brosexual or at the very most ace or aromantic, but still sweet.
Yumichika about to use the real name of his sword to avenge Ikkaku 🥺
Mayuri just getting killed. Hitsugaya is a prodigy, and while I KNOW we won’t see Mayuri get his ass anywhere near a training arc, he can compensate by using tech and smarts. Still, even he knows that he can’t keep up physically with Zaraki or Byakua, so he uses chemicals, poisons, anything to level the playing field. He really does embody Kyoraku’s philosophy of “fight dirty because it’s a fight”
Mayuri’s auto-guard device. In the manga, it initially just looks like pieces of metal sticking out of the sword with a wrapping around it. Here it’s straight up alive. Needless to say, I think it looks really cool, but still very gross.
the title card intro. I never really talk about these, but this one feels awesome, and it transitioned into the opening very well.
OMG, Mayuri is Spider-Man. Does this mean he’s going to be in the next spider verse movie?
This is something I’ve believed for a long time, Mayuri works on Batman logic. Everyone says if you give Batman enough prep time he can beat anybody. Mayuri is the same way except he doesn’t need a long amount of prep time. we saw when he fought Szayelaporro that he was only watching him for a few minutes through Uryu, and in that time managed to make duplicates of all of his organs and put them in his body. I refuse to believe that the man did not have something like this just lying around. He must have the worst kind of ADHD.
I am now fully convinced that the reason Mayuri was locked in the maggots nest, was that he would’ve ended up starting a pharmaceutical company.
NEW RELEASE EFFECT FOR ASHISOGI JIZO! Very creepy, fits him perfectly, also, it makes me think of a baby being born
Hitsugaya’s voice actor is selling it with those screams
The cut to Byakua after Robert talks about beating Ichigo. “Really? You think you can take on the guy who is the number one special threat?”
Another use of Sklaverai! I like Robert’s little boots. Also, I think I figured out his shcrift! It’s N for NYOOOM!
Senbonzakura can apparently shred a bullet to nothing. Sick
Shuhei! Oh no shuhei….
Liltotto’s line “ puke or pig, anything is better than nothing” that goes hard and I love it
Byakua asking if Shuhei is being controlled by the enemy or if he’s the enemy in disguise. He’s smart enough to know that based on one guy who can induce fear, another guy who can manifest a wrestler, lady who can make anything into a bomb, and a guy with the power of imagination, Quincy abilities could be literally anything. He just needs to know how to disable him
I like that Pepe’s episode is one and done. He was my least favorite, sternritter, for a couple of reasons. his power is straight up gaslighting through emotional manipulation.
Pepe getting his ass kicked, very funny.
Cirucci attempting to poison Mayuri, cute moment.
Mayuri the Goat for respecting Giselle’s gender. It makes sense, considering the amount of modifications that he’s done to his own body to make it something more useful to him, but it’s still surprising, considering his lack of respect for everyone else’s bodily autonomy.
I have to say, the Bambi’s have grown on me, and my favorite is Liltotto. She is 110% done with this whole invasion, she just wants to go home get a shower and go out to a nice Buffet. Also, she ate Pepe, which not gonna lie kind of cool
Things I didn’t like:
Charlotte gets beaten. I know it’s canon. I know it’s in the manga, but I still think he should have remained. Also, it makes me wonder if resurrected arrancars can perform a resurecíon. Because if so, WHY HAVE THEY NOT DONE THIS!
I would’ve liked to see more repeats, I understand why we didn’t get them, but I think it would’ve been cool to see the different ways Mayuri ate it as well as Hitsugaya reacting to them.
I think they should’ve lengthened the Mayuri fight. If his appearance was enough to garner a part two to his episode, then it makes sense that he should have a little bit more time. But I understand that people want to see a longer Byakua fight. still this started out as a Mayuri episode, but that flower petal boy had to steal the spotlight.
Pepe really doesn’t get introduced. He shows up in this episode, shows off, then dies. He was shown as far early back as the first invasion when Jidanbo attacked the 12th, and aside from a few background shots, he hasn’t really been seen or done much of anything. So it does make me wonder, how people who haven’t read the manga are feeling about him being beaten this episode.
I’ve heard of people saying that Pepe is a negative stereotypes. And I wasn’t really sure about that until I started looking for it. I suppose he could be a racist stereotype of a black man who is a soul singer? But I always figured he was a priest who was also a sexual predator. That I felt was a little bit more obvious to me.
I would have loved to seen an explanation on why Pepes love power did not work on Byakua. I think it was because he already has love in his heart filled by his dead wife either that or that oken cloak is quality stuff.
Sick episode, loved it. The Quincy are at the royal palace. Can’t wait to see what happens next we-…………
Tumblr media
I think we’re gonna see that motherFUCKER BLINK!!!!
