why do u think ashley should not have been the president’s daughter
thank you for asking! forgive me if this is sloppily written; I think a lot about this but have never put it into succinct words -
the main thing is that Ashley as a character gets her "value" from being the daughter of an important political figure. you're not just saving her because she is a person in need, but because you're politically motivated to aid America. this works well enough in the game, but it ignores some things:
Leon is at odds at the government. in previous entries, it was shown that the US government is an antagonistic force by way of enabling & benefiting from Umbrella's bio-terrorism, as well as threatening Sherry's life if Leon did not work for them. why should he care about helping the president? (it would be different if it seemed like he was being forced - but it doesn't do much to show that besides his lack of excitement in the beginning).
Ashley is worth saving no matter who she is. I think that this lack of textual investment in Ashley as a character shows in how many fans treat her* - as a necessary burden in a greater task. it's not for her, at the end of the day. of course, she benefits from the rescue, and Leon is shown to care about her as an individual, but the game's given reason for caring about her is not centered in Ashley herself.
this is getting kind of long so I'll try to wrap it up by saying that this use of Ashley minimizes her as character and places the US government as a victim within the story, rather than an enemy.
(also it may go without saying that this is made more of an issue by the fact that Ashley is a woman, which should invoke a conversation about how women often are not granted their own textual value within a work and instead derive it from a man)
*I know her AI is kind of tedious but the way she gets treated eclipses that

On a deeper level, Americans have forgotten an old-fashioned goal of working: It’s about buying free time. The vast majority of workers are happier when they spend more hours with family, friends, and partners, according to research conducted by Ashley Whillans, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School. In one study, she concluded that the happiest young workers were those who said around the time of their college graduation that they preferred careers that gave them time away from the office to focus on their relationships and their hobbies.
How quaint that sounds. But it’s the same perspective that inspired the economist John Maynard Keynes to predict in 1930 that Americans would eventually have five-day weekends, rather than five-day weeks. It is the belief—the faith, even—that work is not life’s product, but its currency. What we choose to buy with it is the ultimate project of living.
