When talking episode 1085, not quite done with it here yet, of course you have to mention these beautiful wonderful ukiyo-e woodblock paintings!

The waves in the backdrop evoke Tokage Port, on the night of the raid where in spite of the setbacks, the meeting of the Alliance took place. Love the cherry blossoms and valiant depictions of our samurai friends, and the addition of the crescent moon shawls look very nice too.

Kiku's portrait having her name written as "Okiku" is a nice touch, adds some formality and it's the name she introduces herself with and one she seems most comfortable with, alongside "Kiku."

It would seem that these were painted to promote the exciting Rakugo performance which we witness in the conclusion of the episode. Neat!

Oden & Akazaya Nine

I think what I loved about the relationship of Oden and the Akazaya Nine (9 Scabbards) the most is that they don't feel like a group but more so like a family. Sure, Kinemon and the other Scabbards serve Oden and the Kozuki family but that doesn't mean that each of the Scabbards doesn't speak their mind whenever they feel the need to.

They all lived under a house together for years and grew up together with Oden as their big brother figure. Not only did the Scabbards watch Oden grow as a person and leader but Oden also watched his retainers (who were all weak at first except Ashura) grow into strong and dependable samurai who can more than just hold their own in a fight.

Oden accepted every member of the Scabbards for who they are and I think him saving Nekomamushi, Inuarashi, and Kawamatsu from being burned alive makes that very clear.

He didn't care that Nekomamushi and Inuarashi are minks and that Kawamatsu is a fishman. He could tell that they're just helpless children. Oden hates discrimination so much that he beat up the people who tried to set them on fire.

He also basically adopted the street orphans Izo and Kiku.

He even accepted Kanjuro even though Kanjuro introduced himself as some weirdo is stealing hair in order to make brushes.

Even though Oden clearly didn't like it whenever a new member began following him, he just couldn't say no and took them in, fed them, and gave them a home.

Oden loved the Scabbards so much that he was willing to hold them all up on a plank for an hour while he's being boiled alive in oil for the entire time during their execution so that none of them gets hurt/dies. That's a whole nother level of loyalty.

That's why I hate it whenever I see people say "why do the Scabbards love Oden so much, they don't owe him anything". BRUH. He accepted them back then they were a bunch of loners, took them in, fed them, and gave them a home. He even sacrificed his life and went through the worst kind of pain (boiled in oil) just for the sake of saving all of them.

OF COURSE they would and should love him. Just like Oden loved them. The Scabbards owe Oden everything, and he owes them everything. Oden loved the Scabbards as much as they loved him, they were one big family who were supportive to each other. They all had a ride or die mentality. And that's why they will always be one of my favorite groups/families in the entire series.

Let’s have a fun Akazaya headcanon. Obviously Oden was a natural disaster that destroyed every room he stayed in until Toki either reigned him in or made the issue far worse. Hard to tell with that girl. Looking at how big Oden Castle was back in the day though...seemed big enough I always imagined the retainers ended up having a floor to themselves. Not too many people so each one could have their own room.

What do these rooms look like? That’s where I come in:

Kin’emon: Quite nice actually. No Kin has nothing to do with that. Tsuru though would of course curate a lovely space. That reminds me, there is something about that in canon I need to circle back to but we’re assuming they get a fancy double suite and Tsuru has your average sensibility for classic Wano decor. Nice floral arrangements, cozy but the furniture is nice. Tidy and smells clean. Kin doesn’t exactly spend a lot of time indoors.

Denjiro: Ever-shifting with no rhyme or reason. His room is basically a warehouse for various things he’s in the process of moving around. Imagine a somewhat organized hoarder. There’s also a table cluttered with papers and sake bottles as the centerpiece of the actual small living area. Smells kinda musty. 

Izo: Oden Castle, kind of spartan because he keeps a lot of space empty for dance practice. Everything has a place but it’s tastefully arranged. Since he was dragged away middle of the night, a few things are out of place but the gang left everything as it was. Moby Dick? Classy as hell. Fine silks, the most well-stocked vanity you’ve ever seen. Little library and pistol collection. And one of the greatest mysteries of the Whitebeard Pirates, how he always has a flawless vase of chrysanthemum in there. He keeps them refreshed as well as possible, but Marco’ll perk em up if he has to.

Kiku <3: Well duh, the coolest room. It’s just official her hobby is aromatherapy so this one obviously smells the best. Fought the rest of the group for the good balcony so she can have a flower garden. But also little shelves of jars, apothecary equipment like mortar & pestles, diffusers, etc. Noh decor on the walls, cool houseplants, nothing super extravagant but it’s all nice and comfy. Spends the most time in hers. Neko has also soft-claimed a really good sunny spot in here for nap time. Kawamatsu is allowed to use it but chooses not to, and there is a growing feud now that Toki’s learned of it.

Kanjuro: Perfectly normal but has a vaguely sinister vibe. There’s also like, a holodeck vibe to it since he doesn’t really need permanent furniture. He’ll use his fruit to make the space suit his needs. Makes the place smell like ink though. It’s strong enough Kiku & the Minks don’t like it.

Raizo: The one you really want to knock before entering. The room is fine, if a little spartan. Raizo even has a decent head for aesthetics. There’s a couple of cool statues, some nice inspiring scrolls hanging. Ninja weapon wall is always bitchin. But man...there’s a lot of pornography not very well hidden and it kinda smells like a sad lonely dude lives here. The whole thing gives off a Franky vibe. The guys think it’s cool as hell, then smash cut to Tsuru, Kiku, & Toki deadpan.

Ashura Doji: It’s a type of orderly. Everything is in it’s proper place. Quite tidy even. Doji just...doesn’t understand the difference between proper indoor and outdoor activities. So he keeps it clean but he might be making snake blood soup in a giant pot or something wild like that. A little hazy from the herbs Kiku makes him burn to keep the house from stinking. Doji thinks this adds a touch of class. He also maintains at least one statement floral arrangement. But like, a tough one. 

Inuarashi: He is a samurai dog man, what the hell else would it look like? Cool, orderly weapon displays. Maybe a little religious shrine or scrolls like Raizo’s. A tasteful collection of some luxuries he’s picked up but functional things. Then bone. Some furniture made out of bone that would look a lot better without the little bite marks on it. There’s also this type of carnival prize where they creatively make a little animal that squeaks when you squish it. Inu keeps the big one he won one fire festival.

Nekomamushi: A damn mess. He has a couple of piles of things to snooze on at various times of the day. It smells like smoke from his pipe. Nothing ever stays in place because he compulsively bats it around. Outside or in Kiku’s room half the day anyways. Samurai cat man. His life is a chain of rotating whimsical duties and rotating through his daily schedule of sleeping spots.

Kawamatsu: His room is a little animal sanctuary. First floor and even opens to a small pond. Makes it easier to pop over to the stables and such. He just kinda...chills out underwater decompressing a lot. Divulges his (and all the gang’s) worries into wounded baby squirrels and such. Doesn’t exactly smell nice, but he tries to keep it clean.   

Shinobu: Girl’s a hot mess. It’s kinda like Raizo but for a woman. Makeup & sake bottles strewn about. You might step on an um...marital aid. Piles of clothes, a bit of natural funk not entirely covered up by some attempt at an air freshener. Tries to have floral arrangements and plants but they’re too “mature” for most people’s tastes. Stop saying they’re rotten!

I love and appreciate how this moment was handled in the episode. A quiet moment respecting two of the heroes of the battle, in the place Oden Castle once stood. The bowl of oden in the opening with just the favorite ingredients of the two of them is a really nice touch as well. I got and get teary-eyed over both.

Kiku leading the follow up is perfect, I love it. The baby sibling chopstick flashback even appears again! Seeing her journey from orphan in the snowy streets of Ringo to the confident young woman she has grown into is so special to me. And she's right. Izo, Ashura, and Oden will always be in her and everyone's hearts.

Wow, Oden's retainers are fucking badass, attacking Kaido all at once to the point when his old scar aches.

Some of them were badass individually (Kiku, Cat Viper, Dogstorm, Kawamatsu), while others didn't look badass at all, although had some shades of it (Ki'nemon, Ashura Doji). But attacking together? It was one of the best scenes in this arc, not gonna lie.
